A Word from the Publisher

Goodbye October, Hello November! This is a busy month, as well as the last month of hurricane season. We’ve definitely been lucky so far, so fingers crossed there won’t be any more close calls!

On Tuesday, November 5th, Americans will ask themselves the age-old question of whether they are better off now than they were four years ago and head to the polls to vote. It’s anticipated to be one of the closest presidential elections in history. Additionally, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be contested to determine the 119th Congress. At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that we are all Americans first!

Veterans Day is on Monday, November 11th. This day honors the patriotism and love of country of all those who have served in the U.S. military. Please remember to proudly fly your American flag and take the opportunity to thank everyone who has served!

Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 28th. The purpose of the day is to recognize and give thanks for the many blessings, large and small, that fill your life.

Beware of Bowling Alone

In the U.S. and across the world, actual friends are being replaced by acquaintances. Digital contacts are replacing the time previously spent on human contact. YouTube, TikTok, two-career families, and demanding jobs mean that people have less time to belong to organizations, clubs or churches.

Ten years ago, Robert Putnam noted in his book, Bowling Alone, that our growing social capital deficit meant people often went bowling alone. But, bowling, once an activity that attracted people to leagues and provided cheap weekend fun for the family, has changed. League membership is down, and alleys are closing. People just don't go out as much. They don't do things together.

In the U.K., the Mental Health Foundation has published The Lonely Society. It says about half of Brits believe they are living in a lonelier society. One in three would like to be closer to family, but social trends are driving them apart. Today, the average American has only two close friends, and a quarter of Americans say they don't have any.

Shallow friendships prevail, like those with pals on the Internet. Sociologists say they are very worried about the decline in social connections. A connection with another person may be only a click away, but cultivating a genuine friendship takes more. People can have everything that life has to offer, but if they don't have a good friend, their lives are fundamentally lacking. The secret to close friendships? Put down the device and engage the person. Spend some time with a friend and do it face-to-face.

Before anyone had heard (or even thought of) Veterans Day, Nov. 11 was known as Armistice Day. Each autumn, people in multiple countries honored those who served in World War I, which, at that time, was by far the most horrific conflict in history. But Armistice Day grew into something more when Al King, a shoe repairman in Emporia, Kansas, led a drive to honor all servicemen who served in times of war and peace. King had been too young to serve in World War I, though he attempted to join the Navy at age 15 as the war drew to a close.

King had been actively involved with American War Dads during World War II. He and his wife, Gertrude, raised their young nephew, John Cooper. Cooper, who served as part of the Third U.S. Army in Germany, was killed in action on Dec. 20, 1944. Al's quest began as a way to honor his beloved nephew's sacrifice.

The Emporia Chamber of Commerce backed King after determining that 90 percent of Emporia merchants supported closing their doors on Nov. 11. King was named chairman of an All Veterans Day Committee that included representatives from Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, War Dads and AMVETS.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Veterans Day bill that established November 11th as a national holiday to honor our veterans. And on Oct. 31, 2003, Congress declared Emporia the Official Founding City of Veterans Day.

You probably know people who have type 2 diabetes, and they seem to be fine. But it can be deadly serious. Last year, 103,294 people died from diabetes, making it the eighth leading cause of death. And compared to the year before, diabetes-related deaths increased 17 percent.

Nearly 38.4 million Americans already have diabetes, but millions more are at risk. They have pre-diabetes and may not realize it. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 9 percent of people with diabetes are undiagnosed. If you are overweight, don’t exercise, and feel tired often, it's time to see your doctor for a glucose tolerance test.

A normal fasting blood glucose level is between 70 and 100 mg/dL. A level between 100 and 125 mg/dL indicates prediabetes, and a level of 126 mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes. The good news is that even if your fasting glucose level is high, you can keep from getting type 2 diabetes. But you have to get serious about doing it.

Get regular exercise -- at least 30 minutes each day. You'll have to do it anyway if you progress to type 2 diabetes, so why not exercise to prevent it? Improve your diet. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and fiber-rich foods. Stop drinking sodas and sports drinks. Limit white breads, rice, and pasta, along with sugars from candy, cakes, and pastries. Lose a few pounds. And you can drive consistent weight loss if you watch your portion sizes. Losing just 5 percent of your total body weight can make a difference, but 10 percent reduces type 2 risk by almost 60 percent.

Computer Prep for Hurricane Season

917-318-5659

Pre-Hurricane Preparations— Backup important data: Store files in cloud storage (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox) or external hard drives. Unplug electronics: Disconnect computers, routers, and modems from power sources to prevent damage from power surges. Use high-quality surge protectors to safeguard equipment. Battery backup: Consider investing in a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for critical systems. Secure equipment: Anchor computers, servers, and other equipment to prevent damage from wind or flooding.

Protecting Against Water Damage— Elevate equipment: Keep computers and electronics off the floor to prevent water damage. Waterproof covers: Use waterproof covers or bags to protect equipment. Seal openings: Seal any openings or vents to prevent water entry.

Power Outage Preparations—Alternative power sources: Consider purchasing portable generators or battery packs. Power banks: Charge power banks for laptops and mobile devices. Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS): Ensure UPS batteries are fully charged.

Communication— Notify contacts, clients, colleagues, and friends about potential disruptions. Update social media platforms. Also monitor weather updates and follow evacuation orders. Document equipment: Take photos or videos of equipment before disassembling. Insurance: Review insurance policies to ensure coverage for computer equipment. Plan for downtime: Prepare for potential downtime and have alternative work arrangements

For most of the early 19th century,

had

confusing mix of time zones. Each community could decide what time it was. The state of Wisconsin had 38 time zones. In 1883, the

Early supporters of clock turning included Marcus Marks, president of the borough of Manhattan. He said people would stay out later, play more games and spend more money, making everyone healthier and wealthier. "Summer Time" was also supported by chambers of commerce, restaurants, the American Medical Association, insurance companies and labor unions.

All of this might not have been enough, but World War I changed everything. The government said fewer lamps lit in the evening would mean more fuel for the war effort, and on March 31, 1918, America turned its clocks ahead one hour. But in 1918, many Americans didn't usually bother with clocks, or even own them at all. On farms, people rose at sunrise and retired after twilight. During World War II, clocks were set ahead year-round. But from 1945 to 1966, states and cities could choose if and when to observe daylight savings time. One 35-mile strip between West Virginia and Ohio had seven time zones.

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 standardized daylight savings time, though states can pass laws to exempt themselves. Areas near large cities can opt to stay in the city's time zone even if they are in a different state. Arizona and Hawaii are now the only states that don't observe daylight savings time.

Switch–hitting Pete Rose, baseball’s hit king (4,256) and record holder of games played (3,562) was also a 17 time All–Star. Originally dubbed “Charlie Hustle” in his 1963 rookie season by Mickey Mantle, the nickname stuck due the enormous zeal Rose brought to every game.

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Rose played for the Reds for 17 years. With the Reds, which was referred to as “The Big Red Machine,” Rose captured two World Series rings in 1975 and 1976. He also savored a World Series victory with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980. But with such a glorious career in baseball, the question remains, why is Rose not a member of the Hall of Fame?

In 1989, Rose was penalized from the accusations of betting on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds. The charges included claims he bet on his own team. In 1991, the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those on the “permanently ineligible” list from induction. After years of public denial, he admitted in 2004 that he had bet on baseball and the Reds.

But the issue remains contentious to this day. Was this banishment fair? Does Rose deserve induction for his hitting prowess and contributions to the sport? Rest in peace, Charlie Hustle.

Are the Holidays a Good Time to Sell?

Conventional wisdom says you should wait until the spring to get the most from a home sale. After all, there are generally more buyers in the spring with warmer weather. More competition can lead to price wars, and homes can sell faster and for higher prices than during the winter.

Buyers are still shopping at other times of the year, but the supply of homes listed around the holidays tends to be lower, meaning sellers will have less competition. Serious buyers won't have as many homes from which to choose, so there's more time to focus on yours.

The holidays may also be when potential buyers consider job transfers and end-of-year breaks. If your house is up for sale during the holidays, someone is looking at it. Chances are that person is serious and ready to buy.

The holidays can also bring that warm and cozy feeling, and buyers tend to be more emotional during the holidays and more likely to make decisions based on the feeling.

Many sellers fear that if they list their home during the holidays, their properties will languish on the market or get a lower sales price, but this often isn't the case. When you sell your home during the holidays, you’ll have less competition and potentially find more serious buyers. You can also take advantage of the unique opportunity to create a warm and inviting environment with holiday decor to create positive feelings in buyers.

Sneeze Demons: Can it be Quieter?

It's sneezing season and you are bound to know a sneezer who shakes the house and sets off car alarms with each mighty outburst. There are actually some true physical reasons for the loud sneeze. Otolaryngologists at the Stanford Sinus Center say the variance in volume is caused by differences in anatomy, such as lung volume, abdominal strength, and trachea size. In some people, the body uses more muscles to sneeze than other people do.

While sneezes can be annoying, people shouldn't hold a sneeze in. It can actually cause damage to the eardrum, soft tissue of the neck and even eyes. Nonetheless, we can do some things to quiet a sneeze.

Use a thick handkerchief instead of a tissue. The fabric muffles the sound and decreases the spread of germs. Hold your breath right before a sneeze. It might interrupt the body's coordinated reflex. Cough at the same time you sneeze, which suppresses the sound. A cough blunts the reflex and decreases the volume. Clench your teeth and jaw, which suppresses the sound. Keep your lips open to prevent air-pressure buildup.

Of course, there is also sneeze commentary that often follows a loud sneeze. That is the equally loud sound that goes something like: arrgh, wob, wob, wob. That's all optional. Loud sneezers might limit the commentary. Everyone thanks you.

Welcome Diwali in November

The Hindu celebration of Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in India and among the Indian diaspora worldwide. It usually lasts for five days and runs this year from Oct. 29 to Nov. 3.

Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It commemorates various historical and mythological events, the most popular being the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom Ayodhya after a 14year exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. In the weeks leading up to Diwali, people clean and decorate their homes and often buy new clothes, gifts, and sweets. Many also perform rituals to honor Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

The first day of Diwali is dedicated to wealth and prosperity. People buy precious metals like gold and silver, and new kitchen utensils. On day two, people celebrate the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. People light lamps and ignite firecrackers.

The main day of Diwali, day three, is when families perform a puja (prayer) to Goddess Lakshmi. Homes are illuminated with oil lamps and candles, and people exchange gifts and sweets. Day four honors Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect villagers from torrential rains. People prepare a large variety of vegetarian foods and offer it to Krishna. And on the last day, sisters and brothers celebrate the bonds between them.

Online Privacy Not Too Private

Across social media platforms, users often post statements that read something like: "I do not give permission for my personal data to be used." But it's best to assume that social media companies are using your posts and personal information to feed their AI systems. In many cases, you only have a choice of not using the platform or allowing your personal info to be used.

Meta uses public posts from Facebook and Instagram to train its AI systems. Users must opt out if they don't want Meta to use their data. According to security site Kaspersky.com, the link to the opt-out form is "so well hidden it's almost as if Meta doesn't want you to find it."

The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, trains its AI chatbot, Grok, with user posts and conversations with the chatbot. But you can opt out in the app settings. Snapchat users who use the My Selfie feature to turn their selfies into AI-generated images are also providing content that Snap and the platform's advertisers can use in advertisements. This data is collected from users who opt into My Selfie, but users can opt out by visiting the Settings tab and toggling off "See My Selfie in Ads."

TikTok has been circumspect on its use of data for AI training. According to Fortune, under the Account and Privacy Settings tab, TikTok simply states that it analyzes face and voice information for analytics and demographic classification. And the company states that it does collect your name, age, phone number, IP address, email address, and all search and browsing history.

Effect Affects Memories

For those plagued by intrusive thoughts from previous trauma, psychological help is essential. But for some trauma sufferers, one aspect of their treatment might be surprising: Tetris.

The so-called Tetris Effect has been studied carefully and noted in numerous professional journals since 2009. This classic video game, in which players try to stack randomly falling shapes, seems to have a therapeutic effect on memory in that it distracts the visual memory circuits, according to the original University of Oxford study.

The idea is that the brain has limited space for memories of events. Playing Tetris right after traumatic events could reduce recall of the events, since the game completely interrupts memory processing. Several studies in recent years have also shown that intrusive memories occur less often when Tetris is played for 20 minutes within 72 hours after a traumatic event.

Other studies suggest that, when a person even recalls a previous traumatic event, if they play Tetris for 20 minutes, intrusive memories are also reduced.

But none of the studies claim that intrusive memories are completely eliminated. It also isn't clear that Tetris is the only game that might offer a beneficial effect, but the Tetris Effect is gaining traction.

Remembering One Direction

I grew up with music from artists such as Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Sean Kingston, Rhianna, Drake, Avril Lavigne, and others. But one of the biggest boy bands at the time was One Direction. The band consisted of Harry Styles, Nial Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Their band formed in a rather unique way. The members each auditioned for the United Kingdom’s “The X Factor,” and the judges, notably Simon Cowell, decided the five boys would be more successful as a boy band.

The band released their first album “Up All Night” in 2012 with popular songs, such as “What Makes You Beautiful.” They produced more hit songs such as “Best Song Ever” and “Story of My Life.” When the band toured, teenage girls went insane. I still remember wearing my One Direction hoodie everywhere I went.

During their tour in 2015, band member Zayn Malik decided to quit the band due to stress. After Zayn left, the four remaining members produced other hit songs such as “Drag Me Down” and “Perfect.” But in 2016, the band ultimately split up.

Since the breakup, fans have been wishing for a reunion. However, last month, Liam Payne tragically passed away at the age of 31. His death shocked the world and sparked a sense of nostalgia in all One Direction fans, as they remembered him and the band they grew up with. Fans hope this somber incident will allow the remaining members to put aside their differences and come together as a family once again.

The Case of the Missing Silver Fork

Around 1861, a homemaker in Williamsburg, Virginia, lost a valuable silver dinner fork. She blamed the neighbors, but a new investigation reveals the real culprit. The thief was a rat, one whose family had lived in the walls of the house for generations, nicking a biscuit here and there, or pilfering a fork for fun.

So says Dani Jaworski, manager of architectural collections at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, who told Atlas Obscura that rat nest archeology has become incredibly useful in the last 30 years. Seems the nests of rats contain all sorts of random items that reveal the lives of the humans they lived with (and were dependent on).

A rat's nest recently discovered at Thomas Jefferson's retreat in western Virginia revealed stolen game pieces and a whole shoe. In fact, rat families can live in the same area for thousands of years, according to Science News. In central Oregon, a string of caves was inhabited by Americans about 14,000 years ago and we know that because of pack rats, the curious critters who gleefully make off with everything they can find.

An archaeologist working in Oregon's Paisley 5 Mile Point Caves told Science News that researchers have to keep their tools picked up because the pack rats will make off with them. The researchers found that rat nests still hold remains of baskets, cord, sandals and fishing nets from humans of thousands of years ago. The discoveries help reveal what humans made and even what they ate.

An old country boy with a bucket full of live fish was approached by a game warden. The warden asked the man, “May I see your fishing license please?”

“No, sir. Don’t need one. These here are my pet fish.”

“Pet fish?” the game warden barked.

“Yep. Once a week, I bring these here fish o’mine down to the lake and let ’em swim ’round for a while. When I whistle, they swim right back into my net, and I take ’em back home.”

“Hogwash son, you’re under arrest!”

The boy said, “It’s the truth. I’ll show ya! We do this all the time!!”

“We do now, do we?” smirked the warden. “Prove it!”

The boy released the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After a few minutes, the warden said, “Well?”

“Well, WHAT?” the boy asked.

“When are you going to call them back?” asked the warden.

“Call who back?”

“The FISH!” replied the warden.

“What fish?” replied the boy…

Does Mold Lurk in Your Pipes?

Just about every homeowner probably knows that mold is an opportunist, ready to move in wherever it can find a dark and damp spot that goes undisturbed for long enough. A hard-to-reach corner in the attic or basement, maybe, or nestled in your home's insulation. But mold has another secret hideaway that you may not think to check: the plumbing.

While you're more likely to find mold in drywall or leaky attics, mold can also accumulate in pipes, particularly in homes that have been unused for long periods of time. In continuously occupied homes, the plumbing is less hospitable to mold, thanks to the frequent high-pressure flow of hot and cold water that is often treated with chlorine. But leaks and blockages can still occur in regularly used plumbing, and when they do, mold is certain to follow.

Signs to look for include: Mold around sinks, facets, and drains, slow-draining sinks and tubs, a musty smell after showering or around your hot water heater, excessive mold growth around tile grout or bathtub caulking, and unexplained respiratory symptoms.

Use a mold-killing cleaner such as diluted bleach with water to remove mold from surfaces. To clean mold from drains, pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by half a cup of vinegar, let it sit for a few minutes, then pour at least two cups of boiling water down the drain. It’s also a good idea to hire a licensed plumber or contractor to inspect your plumbing and clean out your drains annually to prevent mold-causing leaks and backups.
