It’s rumored that in 1680, Dom Perignon made a great discovery in a French monastery. He called to his fellow monks, "Come quickly, I am drinking stars!" The spirited exclamation may well be more of a 17th century marketing slogan instead of an actual event, but it does describe the experience of sparkling wine.
Developed over the centuries in the Champagne region of France, only sparkling wine from that region can properly be called Champagne, although the word has become generic and the wine an icon of celebration.
If you are celebrating the New Year with the bubbly, choose the right bottle and the right glass. For the glass, choose a perfectly clean crystal, either a flute (tall and thin with a long stem) or a tulip (a wider base with stem). Hold the glass by the stem to avoid transferring any heat from your hands to the wine.
A standard bottle will give about 5 glasses. A larger bottle, say a Magnum, gives about 12 glasses. For big parties and dramatic displays, champagnes come in even larger sizes. The Jeroboam has the equivalent of four standard bottles, or 24 flutes of champagne, according to Pepites-en-champagne.
Still larger, the Rehoboam contains 6 bottles or 36 flutes. The dramatic Methuselah contains 8 bottles or 48 flutes. And one of the largest bottles is the Melchiesedech, which contains 40 bottles, or 240 flutes. Interestingly, the larger bottles are said to provide a more flavorful (and expensive) sparkling wine.
Four decades after his death, Elvis Presley's image and influence remain undiminished. The editors of Rock & Roll say that while other influential artists preceded him, and he by no means invented rock and roll, he is indisputably its king.
As a recording artist, he sold over one billion records. He had 18 No. 1s, 40 records in the Top 10, and 115 in the Top 40. Presley also starred in 31 box office films and was inducted into five different Halls of Fame: Rock ‘n’ Roll, Country, Gospel, Rockabilly, and R&B.
In 1945, 10-year-old Elvis stood on a chair and sang "Old Shep" in a talent contest. He won second prize. In 1946, he wanted a rifle, but his mother talked him into taking a guitar instead. In high school, he nervously sang with his guitar at a talent show and was surprised to win. In 1954, he recorded "That's All Right" backed up by "Blue Moon of Kentucky" at Sun Studio and later made appearances on Louisiana Hayride. His career was started.
Presley was a white Southerner singing blues laced with country and gospel. He performed with a natural hip-swinging style that made him a teen idol and music icon. Although his hip gyrations were considered controversial at the time, Pressley later revealed this was his way of hiding his terrible stage fright.
It's time to pay the tax man, and there are some relatively small changes for tax year 2024.
Standard Deduction. You will be able to deduct a little more with the standard deduction. The standard deduction increases to $14,600 for single filers and married couples filing separately and to $21,900 for single heads of household, who are generally unmarried with one or more dependents. For married couples filing jointly, the standard deduction rises to $29,200.
Child care tax credit. In 2024, the Child Tax Credit is $2,000 per child age 17 or younger. The credit is also subject to a phase-out starting at $400,000 for joint filers and $200,000 for single filers. For other qualified dependents, you can claim a $500 credit.
IRA and 401(k) limits . For 2024, limits have increased slightly. You can contribute up to $7,000 to an IRA and those age 50 or older can make an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution. The contribution limits for tax-deferred 401(k) and Roth 401(k) contributions have increased to $23,000.
Required Minimum Distribution. If you are age 73 or older, be sure you have taken the required minimum distribution (RMD) from your retirement accounts before the end of the year. If you do not, you will face a 25 percent penalty on undistributed funds. If it is your first RMD, you can wait until April 2025.
Resilience is the ability to overcome adversity and deal with stressful and difficult circumstances. The most resilient people recover from traumatic experiences and are stronger and wiser. Everyone has the potential to develop these abilities, says Al Siebert, author of the award-winning books, ‘The Resiliency Advantage’ and ‘The Survivor Personality.’ He says the five levels of resiliency are:
1. Maintaining your emotional stability, health, and well-being . This is essential to maintaining your energy.
2. Developing an outward focus with good problemsolving skills and concentrating on the challenges at hand . Problem-focused coping is better than emotionfocused coping.
3. Have strong self-esteem. Your self-confidence is your reputation with yourself. You expect to handle new situations well because of past successes. Remember them.
4. Expect things to work out well. Have optimism guided by internal values and a high tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty.
5. Recognize serendipity. It is the ability to recognize what could turn misfortune into good fortune. Siebert recommends having friendships and loving relationships. Those who do are more resistant to stress. Being resilient helps them block attacks and sidestep games and manipulations.
The technology is evolving so quickly that you're forgiven if you don't remember the finer details of artificial intelligence. But like it or not, AI's role in our lives is only going to grow, and a basic understanding will serve you well.
Artificial intelligence analyzes and interprets data in order to simulate human intelligence -- meaning the way we gather information and learn from experience, solve problems, make decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances. But unlike humans, traditional AI can't come up with new ideas on its own and can only make suggestions based on its analysis of existing data.
Generative AI is designed specifically to generate new content -- something that traditional AI isn't programmed to do. Though both systems analyze and interpret data, generative AI identifies patterns in large datasets and then creates new variations based on the information it gleans from the existing dataset. For example, generative AI might train on photos of pickup trucks, and then generate a recognizable image of a truck that does not match any of the photos in the original dataset.
Traditional AI excels at performing specific tasks with clear rules, like monitoring your credit card transactions to detect fraud or segregating spam emails from your regular inbox. It excels at automating unavoidable and time-consuming chores. And generative AI outputs new material based on input or parameters from users -- for example, a user might request a haiku about a tree and receive a complete haiku based only on that suggestion.
Trucking keeps the world supplied with just about everything it needs, but fluctuating fuel costs create a ripple effect that hits consumers in their wallets. Governments and the private sector have leaned into electric trucking. According to Strategy&, a third of all trucks in Europe, North America, and China will be battery or fuel cellpowered zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2030.
While tightening regulations are partly responsible for the speedy shift toward ZEVs, newer electric truck technologies offer a far lower overall cost of ownership compared to internal combustion engines. There are fewer moving engine parts, for example, and less things to break and maintain.
However, a number of issues loom large. For long-distance shipping, nations need a network of charging stations. A loaded 18-wheeler diesel truck could make the trip from California to New York with one or two stops for fueling. An electric truck, on the other hand, with the best available batteries would need to make 11 stops for at least 30 minutes, assuming an average battery range of 300 miles.
Bridges and roadway weight limits will also have to be examined and upgrades made. While electric vehicles have less vibration, they are heavier than diesel trucks. Current weight limits for trucks on interstates is set at about 80,000 pounds. Some states have allowed 2,000 extra pounds for electric trucks, in order to accommodate the extra battery weight. Much depends on new research into batteries to create lighter, longerrange devices.

Roderick David Stewart turns 80 on January 10. His soulful, raspy voice has graced rock and pop music since the late 60’s. Since then, he has sold more than 250 million records. Born in London to a working-class family, he worked a series of odd jobs, including that of a grave digger, before his singing career took off.
After playing first for The Jeff Beck Group and later for Faces, Stewart got his first solo success with the hit single, “Maggie May,’ in 1971. The song stayed at number one for five weeks before getting knocked off by Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves.”
After moving to the U.S. in 1975, Stewart enjoyed more success and developed a reputation for his partying lifestyle. He would own the number one spot again in 1978 with the sultry number, “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” Stewart took on classics after 2000 with a four volume “The Great American Songbook.” The third volume, “Stardust” earned him his first Grammy for best traditional pop vocal album.
Stewart is a survivor of thyroid cancer in 2000 and prostate cancer in 2016. He published his autobiography “Rod,” in 2012 and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has eight children and has been married three times. He is currently married to model and television personality, Penny Lancaster.
You may have heard glaucoma called "the sneak thief of sight." That's because it has no symptoms until it has progressed beyond the point where it can be successfully treated. It is the second leading cause of preventable blindness in the world.
More than 4 million Americans have glaucoma and 120,000 are already blind because of it. Worldwide, nearly 80 million people have the condition. The best way to protect yourself is to have an eye examination. Today, most optometrists test for it. If they find any indication, you should see an ophthalmologist immediately. Treatment can be effective in the early stages.
Though the most common forms affect middle-aged and older people, glaucoma can affect all age groups. Insist that your children be tested when they are being fitted for eyeglasses. Those at higher risk include people over 60, people of African, Asian and Hispanic descent, and those who have family members who have glaucoma. Also at higher risk are diabetics and people who are severely nearsighted.
In the most common form of glaucoma, vision loss begins with peripheral or side vision. Be on the lookout for that first noticeable symptom and get treatment immediately.
The idea of a new year just naturally suggests new beginnings. Here are some customs for making the new year a lucky one. Lucky food: Eat 12 grapes at midnight, one for each month of the year (common in Spain and Latin America). Lentils: Represents prosperity due to their expanding nature when soaked. Black-eyed peas and collard greens: Southern U.S. tradition symbolizing coins and money respectively. Pomegranate: Represents fertility and renewal with its abundant seeds. Fish: Signifies abundance and surplus in Chinese culture.
Clean your house or apartment before New Year's Day in order to clear the way for an exciting new year. But never clean on New Year's Day, or you’ll sweep away the luck. If you can't clean the whole house, concentrate on the kitchen, the space that represents health and prosperity.
Attract good fortune. Put 27 one-dollar bills in your wallet and 49 coins in your change purse or pocket. Then sprinkle ground ginger on them. Put some on your checkbook too.
Get rid of the negatives. Open the door at midnight and light firecrackers or bang pots and pans to scare away any destructive influences in your life.
Make the first words positive. The first words said to you after midnight can impact your good fortune. If necessary, tell someone what to say just after midnight. And if you lose your temper or use bad language on New Year’s Day, it can have a negative effect on the coming year.
That moment when you see it. Something so vast, so sublime, so unexpected. When you experience a sense of transcendence and wonder—that’s awe. Awe can come from nature, but it doesn't have to. In fact, in one 2017 study, people identified their most profound source of awe as being witness to an instance of moral purity and beauty, as when people witnessed a person's courage, strength, or endurance.
According to Dacher Keltner, author of "Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder," people can be awestruck by the birth of their children, or an individual who risks his life for another. But, they are never awestruck by money and possessions.
The emotion, present across all cultures, seems to have several physical benefits. In periods of acute or chronic stress, awe seems to reduce stress and lessen such physical symptoms as headaches or insomnia, conferring a heightened sense of meaning, purpose, and social integration. The 2017 study found that a sense of awe tended to diminish people's focus on themselves and become more helpful to others. A sense of awe tends to inspire spiritual experiences and may even trigger a belief in the supernatural, according to another 2013 study reported in Psychological Science.
“Our bodies respond to healthy doses of awe-inspiring nature like we respond to a delicious and nutritious meal, a good sleep, a quenching drink of water, or an uplifting gathering with friends or family: we feel nourished, strengthened, empowered, and more alive," writes Keltner.

For people divorcing late in life, there is a lot of work to do after the decree is signed, and the smart people do it quickly. For people over the age of 50, there is less time to rebound from the financial punch of splitting up assets and it's imperative that each party immediately enact the terms of the decree.
401(k) splits: Immediately follow-up with your lawyer to be sure the plan administrator has accepted the terms of the divorce order. Set up an IRA as a destination for the assets and speak with the plan administrator about the procedure for transferring assets.
Contact a financial advisor: If this isn't handled promptly, account balances may decrease. Also be sure to change all your passwords.
Life Insurance: Change beneficiaries, if not otherwise specified in the divorce decree.
Taxes: Meet with a tax professional immediately to find out any implications of your new tax status. Bring your previous year return.
Social Security: Review your benefits. Consider whether a divorced spouse benefit might help you.
Credit Cards: Close all joint accounts immediately. Cancel your ex-spouse's user status. Open new card accounts in your name. Cars and real estate: Retitle all vehicles and real estate. Review car and homeowner policies.
You can look at a donut and gain five pounds. Funny – but maybe even a tiny bit true. A new study published in the journal Nature hints at a correlation between obesity and changes at the cellular level in fat cells that appear to remember obesity.
Weight loss experts have long noted that obese people who slim down tend to revert back to obesity -- the yo-yo effect. But the reasons for this were unclear. Was it merely that the people reverted to old eating styles or was there something more devious at play?
Scientists now believe that, among the many reasons for regaining weight, at least one might be a sort of genetic memory. In mouse studies, scientists put obese mice on a diet until they slimmed down, and then compared their fat cells to mice who had never been obese. In the formerly obese mice, fat cells absorbed more sugar and fat than the cells from mice that never were obese. Certain genes were active in obese mice that were not active in never-obese mice.
In fact, when put on a high calorie diet, the formerly obese mice gained more weight faster than the never-obese mice. The findings do not indicate that fat cell memory alone is the cause of returning obesity. It is also not known what factors, if any, can actually alter fat cell memory or if fat cell memory ever changes.

We all outgrow our clothes or sometimes forget we have something stuck in the back of our closet. Many people will donate clothes when they are done wearing them or possibly pass clothes along to a friend.
A quick and easy way to make some extra money is by reselling used clothes. There are multiple website platforms to do this on. The two most popular are Depop and Poshmark.
Depop is a fashion marketplace where people can buy secondhand merchandise for great prices, and this site is geared more for a younger audience with brands such as Brandy Melville, Urban Outfitters, and Abercrombie. Poshmark is also a fashion marketplace for secondhand items but targets a slightly older audience.
The two vary in price with Poshmark having 20% higher fees and a flat-shipping rate of $7.97, while Depop has more flexible shipping fees. Additionally, Depop offers direct messaging between sellers and customers to be able to discuss merchandise condition and price.
While both are useful websites for saving money purchasing fashionable secondhand clothing, they are also great ways to make extra money.
Once the undisputed king of the kids' lunch box, sales of Lunchables -- a meat, cheese, and cracker combo in a disposable plastic container – tumbled during the third quarter of 2024. Parent company Kraft Heinz saw a 2.2 percent drop in sales across the board, nearly half of which was driven by Lunchables, which decreased its sales by 12 percent.
According to CNN Business, Kraft Heinz is scrambling to prop up the ailing $2 billion brand, and the headwinds are fierce -- parents are increasingly concerned that the prepackaged meals aren't healthy options, and the brand's attempt to get on school lunch menus turned into a public relations debacle. New competitors like Lunchly are entering the market as well, with backing from YouTube megastars Logan Paul and MrBeast.
Lunchables may be stale these days, but the brand, launched in the late 1980s as a way for Oscar Mayer to repurpose excess bologna, was an early leader in ready-to-eat packaged foods. In recent years, however, the brand has come under heavy criticism for its high levels of sodium and saturated fat, and in 2024, Consumer Reports found that the products also contained lead and cadmium.
Kraft Heinz disagrees with the findings, but Lunchables still took a major hit from the negative publicity. The company hopes to rebuild the brand with a revamped upcoming marketing campaign with new flavors.
Cybercriminals who visited PopeyeTools recently to purchase stolen information and other illicit tools found a nasty surprise instead -- the website had been seized by the United States Justice Department. And to really drive the point home, the single splash page also now features an image of Popeye behind a set of iron bars.
According to The Record, PopeyeTools has been selling stolen credit card data since at least 2016. Users could also purchase debit card numbers, banking information, and other valuable personal information that could be used to commit identity theft. Stolen access devices and other tools for financial crimes were also available, often at bargain prices.
The sophisticated criminal marketplace fashioned itself as a high-quality resource for discerning cyberthiefs, and deployed the phrase "We Believe in Quality, Not Quantity" in their online marketing to attract clientele. PopeyeTools even guaranteed its data, promising full refunds for stolen credit card data that was no longer valid at the time it was sold.
The Justice Department identified three men -- two from Pakistan and one from Afghanistan -- as the perpetrators. All have been charged with several offenses in U.S. federal court and face up to 10 years in prison if they are convicted. The Justice Department also seized several cryptocurrency accounts controlled by the suspects.

While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant and resumed their trip home.
After driving for over 45 minutes, the wife realized she had left her glasses on the table at the restaurant. To add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance further before they could find an exit to turnaround to return to the restaurant.
All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grumpy old man. He complained and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He never let up for a single minute.
To the wife’s relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant. As the woman got out of the car and hurried towards the front door to retrieve her glasses, her ornery husband rolled down his window and hollered out, “While you’re in there, you might as well get my hat and the credit card.”

As you slide the spatula under that hamburger, you might be thinking about not over cooking your dinner. But you might also be concerned about something else: E. coli bacteria. Unless you are certain that it's cooked thoroughly, cook it longer. There's no way to know whether the meat contains the bacteria. You can't tell by the aroma or the taste.
It's hard to say how many Americans fall ill every year from E. coli infection, the largest source of which is contaminated ground beef. The best guess is that more than 70,000 people get sick annually. About 2,000 get sick enough to be hospitalized and about 60 people in the U.S. die from it.
An industry-wide survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year found that one of every 200 samples of ground beef was contaminated with E. coli bacteria. It would be impossible to test every package of hamburger, and it takes just a small amount of E. coli to make someone seriously ill. Irradiation has been approved for use by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It treats meat with a low dose of radiation that can kill virtually all bacteria. Public suspicion, however, has currently prevented its use.
Producers and the USDA can't guarantee germ-free meat. All consumers can do is to handle it carefully and cook it to 160 degrees, which easily kills E. coli.
Palm Beach County Public Safety Department Animal Care and Control Division (PBCACC) has so many adorable adoptables waiting at the shelter to be your new best friend! This month’s spotlight is Poseidon (A2156684). Poseidon is a big boy, coming in at 105 lbs. of unconditional love!
This 2-year-old pup is ready to run and play! He loves going out on walks and sniffing around. Have a pool? Then your home might be perfect for Poseidon! True to his name, Poseidon loves the water! Give him a kiddie pool and he’ll spend the whole day lounging in it.
As the longest resident at the shelter, Poseidon is a part of the Housewarming Gift Program. This means that when Poseidon finds his new family, he gets to go home with lots of presents like a crate, a plush bed, a big bag of food, 3 month of preventatives, and lots of other goodies donated from businesses in the community (while supplies last.)
PBCACC’s kennels are open every day at noon, so come on down to meet Poseidon and all of the other amazing pets here! For more information on PBCACC’s services, please visit www.pbcgov.org/animal or call 561-233-1200. Located at 7100 Belvedere Rd. in West Palm Beach. Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com/PBCACC and Instagram: @PBCACC.
