Goose Goslin's Famous Omission

Leon Allen (Goose) Goslin was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1968. A great player, he hit left and pitched right. While he was a gifted slugger, Goslin’s outfield play included a penchant for flapping his arms wildly as he tracked down fly balls. His unusual, though effective, style earned him the nickname of ‘Goose.”

In the 1924 World Series, Goose hit a sensational in-the-park home run. The fans cheered wildly. Fellow players poured out of the dugout to shake his hand and slap his back after he slid into home plate in a great cloud of dust, seemingly a split second before the tag. Then the umpire loudly shouted, "Yeerr out!" It seems that Goose had done a superb job hitting the ball, but he hadn't touched first base. He had neglected probably one of the simplest, yet most important, parts of the scoring process.

Though it has been a long time since that day, the experience of Goose Goslin still stands out as one that people in all kinds of jobs should consider. Even if your work is outstanding on most parts of a job, if you neglect to do just one basic part of it, the whole thing may be for naught.

Goose and his team suffered from his silly mistake. But the famous blunder is still talked about today when MLB batters accidentally miss touching a base, especially in important games.

How Much Cash to Stash?

Money is going digital. When your check goes straight to your bank account and you pay bills directly from your account, you might never see an actual bank note. But should you always have some cash on hand? You might need to tip someone, or what about an emergency? If a tornado hits, your home might be so damaged you can't stay there, so you might need cash for lodging and food. The question is how much cash to keep.

First, you don't want to keep too much around. Cash is an insecure asset -- it can be lost or stolen or even burned in a fire. You want to store it in a safe place. Cash loses value to inflation (especially over the past 24 months), so you want most of your cash in an interest-bearing account.

Yasmin Purnell, founder of The Wallet Moth, thinks the on-hand cash amount should be about $1,000. Enough to get a hotel, dinner, water, gas, and medication. Other personal finance types say you might also want to protect yourself with extra food, like canned goods stored in a closet, along with other non-perishable staples.

One situation where cash might be handy (or not), is in the case of a devastating emergency, such as a hurricane, tornado or civil unrest. Disasters can create mini economies of need. Five gallons of gasoline, or even batteries, might be priceless. Four gallons of water might be irreplaceable. Canned goods might be essential, especially during extended periods of need. In these situations, scarcity will cause prices to soar. While cash could be handy, you might need the commodities more.

Don't Sweat Antiperspirant Rumors

Walk down the deodorant aisle these days and you'll see a plethora of aluminum-free deodorant options shelved alongside conventional aluminum-containing antiperspirants. Maybe all of the aluminum-free marketing makes you a bit nervous -- didn't you hear that it might cause cancer? Should you make the switch to natural deodorant with "clean" ingredients?

First, it's important to understand the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants. Antiperspirants (which all contain aluminum salts) block sweat ducts to keep users dry, while deodorants only mask smells and target odor-causing bacteria. Natural antiperspirants don't technically exist, according to The Strategist, though some natural deodorants have drying ingredients.

Where did the cancer rumor begin? In the early 2000s, a very small number of studies with limited sample sizes suggested some link between antiperspirants and breast cancer, according to Penn Medicine. But those studies have since been disproved, and researchers have found no evidence to support a cancer link. Another theory, which holds that aluminum from antiperspirants can be absorbed into the skin and increase cancer risk, has been similarly debunked. The only established medical risk associated with antiperspirant is among people with advanced kidney disease. However, as the National Kidney Foundation points out, it's impossible to absorb enough aluminum through the skin to hurt the kidneys -- you would need to eat the stick to cause real damage.

Michelin Stars are one of the most coveted awards in the food industry. But have you ever stopped to ponder how a tire company became one of the most renowned names in the restaurant business? Turns out that the Michelin Guide is one of the best examples of complementary goods.

A complementary good is something that, once sold, will generate demand for other related products. For example, if you buy a coffee maker, there's a good chance that you'll buy coffee filters as well. In the early 20th century, the Michelin brothers were building a tire business. Yet while the future for automobiles looked bright, cars were still quite rare. Among other factors, many people didn't see a need to travel long distances and thus didn't need an automobile. This put a crimp on the demand for the brothers' tires.

To spur demand, the brothers set out to convince Americans they should hit the road. This would be no small feat because traveling back then was daunting. Simply finding a good place to eat or find gas could become quite the burden. So Michelin launched the Michelin Guide, which contained listings of the best places to eat, sleep, and refuel on trips.

Michelin started by giving their guides away for free. After all, they weren't trying to sell books but the tires, and the automobile industry soon expanded at breakneck speed. Today, consumers can use their smartphones and the web to hunt down restaurants and the like. Regardless, obtaining a Michelin Star can be a huge deal for restaurant owners.

Sneaky Summer Safety Hazards

Jellyfish stings. The number of jellyfish stings is on the rise. Carry a small bottle of vinegar or rubbing alcohol in your beach bag. If you get stung, it will ease the pain.

Bee stings. More than 500,000 people are treated in emergency rooms each year for bee stings, and 40 die. Bees are attracted to bright clothing, the smell of perfumes and lotions, and sweet foods and drinks. If you are stung, remove the stinger by scraping it away with a credit card. Don't squeeze it, which can release more venom. Wash the area and apply antiseptic. If you have a history of allergic reactions, ask your doctor for an Epi-pen.

Poison ivy, oak, sumac. If you touch poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac, remove the irritating resin as soon as possible. Wash the area with rubbing alcohol, followed by soap and water. If no alcohol is available, wash well with soap and water.

Mosquito bites. Mosquito bites itch like mad and can transmit diseases like West Nile Virus. Repellents containing DEET offer the best protection. For children under age 6, never use an insect repellent that contains more than 15 percent DEET.

Open wndows. Each year about 5,000 children age 10 and under are seriously injured by falling through windows. Screens don't help much and can easily give way under a child's weight. Move furniture away from windows to keep a child from climbing up to reach a window.

3 Steps to Avoid Future Family Conflict

Many people have worked and planned in order to accumulate money and assets to bequeath to their children. What they may not have anticipated is a dispute among their heirs that could break the family apart. It takes more than a will to prevent hard feelings. It takes communication.

Rather than keeping their plans a secret, parents should inform adult kids about the terms of their will and the distribution of personal property. For example, ask Joe if he thinks it's OK that he will get all the furniture and Mary will get all the silver and china. If he says no, you have time to change the plan and avoid conflict later on.

Among people age 50 and over, only 17 percent have a will, durable power of attorney and a living trust, according to the AARP. But even when they have taken care of business, the potential for bad feelings is high unless there has been communication and agreement. Some tips on how to bequeath.

•Give the same amount to each heir, regardless of if one may be financially better off.

• Make a living trust that will dictate how your property will be disposed of. It's especially important if you are in your second marriage. You want your adult kids to get your house, not whoever your spouse may will it to later.

• Leave a list of your plans with an attorney or friend so your kids won't have to hunt for it when bereaved. And check your will and plans every few years to reflect current situations.

Despite the fluctuating housing market this past year, confidence levels remain high with 44% of potential homebuyers, up 12% from the previous year, indicating they'll be financially ready to purchase in the coming year, according to a new report from Chase.

Chase's First-Time Homebuyer Study is based on the responses of 1,900 U.S. based consumers in Q4 2022 amongst those who have never owned a home. The report found that 58% of respondents said that they were likely to purchase in the next 12 months, and 70% still view homeownership as an important step to building wealth.

The majority of respondents have improved their credit score and implemented budgeting techniques to save more for a home. First-time homebuyers are likely to be married or partnered Millennials (56%), but nearly 40% are single. Twenty- five percent are GenX, and even some (7%) Boomers are entering the homebuying process for the first time.

Prospective homebuyers are eager to tap into the wealthbuilding capabilities that homeownership brings. Despite market uncertainty and lengthened timelines, first-time buyers are making the necessary lifestyle adjustments to reach their homeownership goals. If you are in the market to buy a home, whether or not you are a first-time homebuyer, contact me and I will put you in touch with our top-notch lenders that are experts in the field.

The Key to Proper Hydration

Keeping your body hydrated by taking in enough fluids is an important part of good health. But even if you don't drink the recommended eight glasses of water each day, you might not have to worry. Counting the food and beverages people consume each day, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) says Americans are usually getting enough water without purposely drinking more.

Caffeinated beverages can actually be counted. IOM's Food and Nutrition Board says there is little evidence that caffeinated beverages flush water and its benefits from the body. They do contribute to hydration, but are often full of sugar and phosphates, which can weaken bones and teeth. The real hydration problem is too much sodium. The average man takes in two to three times the daily recommended sodium intake and women get twice as much as they need. The second problem is a lack of potassium, an essential nutrient found in spinach, potatoes, cantaloupe, bananas, almonds and mushrooms. IOM recommends that adults get at least 4.7 grams of potassium daily, but the average man only gets around 3.1 grams. Women get around 2.3 grams.

Doctors writing in HealthNews say getting too much salt and too little potassium also increases the risk of high blood pressure. Balancing these two nutrients is the key. Before exercising or when you are outdoors in hot weather, drink extra water to make up for what you lose through sweating. By limiting salt, getting enough potassium, and drinking more on hot days, you’ll keep your body properly hydrated.

The Art of Mastering Self-Discipline

How different your life could be if you had more self-discipline? Unfortunately for most of us, we are disciplined only in certain parts of our lives and only during certain times. Motivational coach Michael Janke says, "self-discipline is the ability to regulate your conduct by principle, persistence, and sound judgment rather than desire or social acceptance."

Being able to say ‘no’ is a big part of it. By saying no to yourself, you learn how to effectively manage your desires and impulses. But in this age of immediate gratification, it isn't easy. However, one thing is certain: It is a guarantee for a solid sense of self-worth. Developing self-discipline takes a certain amount of effort. Taking the following steps will lead you in the right direction:

• Determine which areas of your life you want to change. Make a list of things that stand in the way and the reasons why you have not been successful in the past.

• Make a second list showing all of the reasons you want the change.

• Consider how your life would be different if you created an attitude that supported the plan.

If you begin the search feeling that it is a self-denial program, it will be much more difficult. Psychotherapist Carol Juergensen Sheets says it is essential to create enthusiasm for the positive things that will come if you practice more discipline.

A Professor's Last Lecture on How to Live

It's not unusual for retiring professors to give a last lecture. When Carnegie Mellon University's Randy Pausch gave his in 2008, he wasn't retiring. He was dying of cancer. Today, his now famous lecture has 21 million views on YouTube and is still inspiring many to follow Pausch's advice about what is important in life.

At the time, he was the father of three small children, and he said in a USA Today interview, "I was trying to put myself in a bottle that would one day wash up on the beach for my children." From his lecture, Achieving Your Childhood Dreams, here are a few of his points about life:

• Never underestimate the importance of having fun. I'm dying and I'm having fun every day because there's no other way to play it.

• Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

• No one is pure evil. Find the best in everybody. Wait long enough and people will surprise you.

• It's not about achieving your dreams but about living your life. If you live the right way, the dreams will come.

• You can't get anywhere without help. Ask yourself: What kind of person do people want to help? Then you'll know the answer to: What kind of person should I try to be?

• Be grateful when someone is making you work hard: When you are screwing up and no one is saying anything to you, that means they gave up.

Investors Pour Billions into AI Ideas

From 1848 to 1850, San Francisco's population surged from a thousand people to over 25,000 amid the California Gold Rush. Now, a gold rush of a different sort is seeing billions poured into artificial intelligence, even as investments dry up in other parts of the tech sector. In some cases, even AI startups still working on the basics of their business concepts are attracting massive investments.

When two tech stars from Google, Ashish Vaswani and Niki Parmar, decided to strike out on their own, they quickly raised millions for their startup, Essential AI. They didn't have a business plan or even a company name, but the potential for AI is so hot that investors are willing to roll the dice.

The biggest focus right now is on generative AI, which means using artificial intelligence to create content, images, and the like. In 2018, just $400 million was invested in AI solutions. It's estimated that $4.5 billion was invested in 2022. But this year, analysts expect far more money to pour in. Already, Microsoft has invested at least $10 billion in OpenAI, the organization behind the popular AI solution ChatGPT.

The influx of cash into AI comes even as investing in startups cools off, according to The Wall Street Journal. In the first quarter of 2023, venture capital investments weighed in at only $37 billion, down more than 60 percent from its peak in the 4th quarter of 2021. Industry experts believe that artificial intelligence could have a profound impact on everything from customer service to Hollywood movie production.

This summer is filled with so much. I’m working the majority of the time as a camp director and counselor at Picasso’s Creative Workshop. I have a lot of fun with my campers. Along with that, I have a two-week trip planned to New York. Going to New York has been a summer tradition for as long as I can remember. I go to visit my grandparents, cousins, and my aunt and uncle.

There are also many things happening in pop culture this summer. On June 30th, Olivia Rodrigo released her newest song, Vampire. This has been her first release since her first hit album, SOUR, which was released in 2021.

On July 7th, Taylor Swift is releasing Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), which she announced at her opening night show in Nashville on May 5th. While I’m excited to hear Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), the song August, from Taylor’s album Folklore, has been on repeat all summer.

The trailer for season two of The Summer I Turned Pretty which was released early June, features this song. The show is based off the book trilogy by Jenny Han. Both the books and the show are the perfect summer teenage romance. Fans are excited to see where the plot will go after last season left everyone on their toes. Season two will officially be released on July 14 on Prime Video.

"Peanut Patch" Shows Promise for Allergies

A new experimental patch could prevent severe reactions in toddlers with peanut allergies, according to NBC News. A late-stage clinical trial of more than 200 young children with peanut allergies found that after a year of treatment with the patch, 67 percent of participants could tolerate small amounts of peanut protein. In addition, the group experienced fewer severe allergic reactions, overall, after completing treatment.

The Viaskin Peanut patch from the French pharmaceutical firm DBV technologies contains 250 micrograms of peanut protein -- about 1/1000th of a peanut. The toddlers wore the patches between their shoulder blades for 22 hours each day for a year, with new patches applied daily.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, peanuts are among the food allergens most commonly associated with life-threatening reactions. Currently, there are no approved treatments for peanut allergies in children under the age of four. The FDA has approved one treatment, the powder-based Palforzia, to reduce the risk of severe allergies in children between the ages of four and 17.

According to the National Institutes of Health, early exposure is key to preventing severe allergies. Current NIH clinical guidelines recommend that babies who have not already tested positive for peanut allergies should eat peanut-enriched foods when they start other solid foods -- between four and six months of age.

A guy wants a divorce. He tells the counselor, “I just can’t take it anymore. Every night she’s out way after midnight, just going from bar to bar until the wee hours of the morning.” The judge asks, “What’s she doing?” The guy answers, “Looking for me.”

Two men are playing golf. One of them is about to take a swing when a funeral procession appears on the road next to the course.

He stops mid-swing, takes off his cap, closes his eyes, and bows his head in contemplation. His opponent comments: "Wow, that must be the most touching thing I've ever seen. You are a very feeling man."

The man, recovering himself, replies, "Yeah, well we were married 35 years."

The King Without a Throne

In 1531, Ferdinand I of the Habsburg dynasty became the King of Germany, Hungary and Croatia, Archduke of Austria, and Holy Roman Emperor. His grandson, also called Ferdinand, inherited the titles in 1619, followed by his son, Ferdinand III, in 1636.

The Habsburgs were in their golden age, but it didn't last. The next Ferdinand suffered from a medical condition and was forced to abdicate his throne in 1848. Even less lucky was Franz Ferdinand, who famously caught an assassin's bullet in 1914. Four years later, the Habsburgs lost their empire for good when Austria dethroned and exiled them.

A century later, the Habsburgs are still around and there's even another Ferdinand, albeit one with a very different life than the ones who came before him.

‘Ferdinand Zvonimir Maria Balthus Keith Michael Otto Antal Bahnam Leonhard von Habsburg-Lothringen,’ heir apparent to the royal House of Habsburg-Lorraine, is 25 years old and shares a Vienna apartment with his sister. On occasion, he goes for long runs around the vast Schonbrunn Palace, where the Habsburgs once spent each summer. These days, he has to pay the entry fee to get in like anyone else.

In theory, he's an archduke of Austria and a royal prince of Hungary, but the titles don't mean much when the throne no longer exists. Not that he minds -- without an empire to inherit, he's free to pursue his real passion: motor sports, specifically endurance races that can last as long as 24 hours. And he's good at it, if his 2021 victory at the prestigious Le Mans race in France is any indication.

Self-Repossessing Cars Are Coming

Imagine this. You're running late for work. After you throw on your shoes and stuff your laptop into your bag, you rush out the door, angling for your car. But as you reach for the handle, the car suddenly starts backing up. A moment later, your once reliable ride roars out of sight, leaving you stranded in the driveway. Then it dawns on you: You forgot to make your monthly payment and now your AI-powered car is heading back to the dealership or your lender, perhaps destined for another driver who's better at staying on top of their bills.

This might sound like something out of a sci-fi flick or a dark comedy, but Ford recently filed a patent for self-repossession systems. Ford claims that they have no intention of actually deploying the system anytime soon, but just dreaming it up has raised eyebrows.

Essentially, a lender would be able to communicate with a car's computer system and self-driving AI. If a driver falls behind on payments, the bank could command the car to turn itself in at a repossession lot. The lender might also instruct the car to contact the police.

For now, cars aren't supposed to drive themselves long distances unless a human is behind the wheel. This likely means that self-repossessing cars are still a ways off. But with current technology, a car could simply drive itself to a nearby spot that's easier for tow trucks to access. Likewise, a lender might be able to simply shut a car down or turn off certain features, like the radio and air conditioning, until the owner catches up on their payments.
