Iguana Invasion Worsens

The iguana population continues to grow exponentially throughout south Florida. These invasive reptiles have virtually no natural predators to keep their numbers in check, especially when full grown. Male green iguanas can grow over five feet in length and weight up to 17 pounds. Females can also reach five feet in length but rarely exceed seven pounds.

Green iguanas pose significant health risks and have detrimental effects on native species, ecosystems, and infrastructure. Iguana poop can pass salmonella to both humans and pets, as well as contaminate pools and fountains. The lizards are also causing extensive damage to flowers and plants, lake and canal embankments, screen damage, massive tunnels under pavers and patios, and even cracking roof tiles and shingles.

Urgent removal methods like trapping and eradication are imperative to restore ecological balance and prevent property damage, as female iguanas can lay over 70 eggs every year. And proactive measures to avoid direct contact with iguanas and their waste are crucial to reduce the transmission of diseases and parasites.

Japan's celebration of Valentine's Day has a unique twist. On February 14, only women give gifts of chocolate to men. Some of these gifts, known as giri "obligation" chocolates, are given to bosses, male coworkers, and male classmates and friends. Women give special chocolate, called honmei chocolate, to their sweethearts.

Men reciprocate on White Day on March 14. On this day, many men give women chocolates in white boxes. If the recipient is a girlfriend, sometimes a gift of flowers or white lingerie is substituted or added. White Day is said to have originated when a marshmallow company urged the men to repay their Valentine's gifts with white marshmallows.

Originally, the day was called Marshmallow Day but later evolved to White Day. Candy companies sought to cash in with special white chocolates.

In China, the Night of Sevens is sometimes called Chinese Valentine's Day. Celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar, it's also referred to as the Festival to Plead for Skills. On this day, young women show off their skills in homemaking and make wishes for a good husband.

The Brazilian equivalent of Valentine's Day is the Day of the Lovers (Dia dos Namorados), celebrated on June 12. It immediately precedes the Feast of Saint Anthony -- also known as the marriage saint.

Groundhog Day Captures Imaginations

Groundhog Day has captured the hearts and attention of people around the world. Every year on February 2, people eagerly await the emergence of Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to folklore, if Phil sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. But have you ever wondered about the history behind this quirky celebration?

The origins of Groundhog Day can be traced back to ancient European traditions, particularly Candlemas Day. This Christian holiday marked the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It was believed that the weather on Candlemas Day could predict the arrival of spring. If the day was sunny, winter would persist; if it was cloudy, spring was on the way.

When German settlers arrived in Pennsylvania in the 18th century, they brought with them their own tradition known as Grundsaudaag, or Groundhog Day. They believed that if a hibernating animal -- like a groundhog -- emerged from its burrow on February 2 and saw its shadow, winter would endure for six more weeks.

The town of Punxsutawney embraced this tradition and held its first official Groundhog Day celebration in 1887. Since then, thousands of people have gathered each year to witness Phil's weather prediction. The event has gained international attention, thanks in part to the 1993 film "Groundhog Day," starring Bill Murray. Groundhog Day remains a lighthearted and fun-filled celebration that brings communities together during the winter months.

The New Florida Follies proudly presents their brand-new show for 2024—The Broadway Beat! The show is a Broadway-style extravaganza of song and dance performed by the forever young Follies performers! Audiences will be entertained with great music, dance, and a special tribute to the Armed Forces.

The New Florida Follies is a not-for-profit charitable organization with proceeds being donated to children's charities. February is American Heart Month: How to Save Your Life The steps you take now could save a life — your life. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic say heart disease is often preventable. Their recommendations include: Don't smoke or use tobacco products. Smoking is the top risk factor for heart disease. Women who smoke and take birth control pills are at even greater risk, especially after age 35.

Exercise. Regular exercise can reduce the risk of a fatal heart attack by nearly a quarter. It also reduces stress, another significant risk factor. Though guidelines call for up to 60 minutes of exercise a day, even small amounts can help.

Control cholesterol and eat a heart-healthy diet. Saturated fat and trans fats raise blood cholesterol levels and increase cardiovascular disease risk. Major sources include beef, butter, cheese, and coconut and palm oils.

Maintain a healthy weight. Weight gain as an adult is mostly fatty tissue and is a risk factor for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease.

Vegetables and fruits are an important part of a heart-healthy diet. They help prevent heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.

Get regular health screenings.

Healthy adults should have cholesterol levels and blood pressure checked every two years, or more often if their numbers are high.

Ever Heard of Snake Island?

It's all over social media lately: The frightening Snake Island, home of deadly snakes. To hear some posters tell it, you literally step on snakes there with every step you take. That is a great story, but according to herpetologists, it's really not accurate.

The island’s official name is llha da Queimada Grande which sits off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean. The island really does have a lot of snakes – an estimated 4,000 of them. And it is a small island, about 106 acres of rock separated from the mainland eons ago and trapping the golden lancehead pit viper on the island.

The venomous golden lancehead really is a dangerous snake. Untreated bites carry a 7 percent chance of death, an unpleasant end thanks to internal bleeding and brain hemorrhage. Sadly, the future of the golden lancehead is bleak. It is currently critically endangered as its mostly bird diet supply on the island is dwindling. And inbreeding, a consequence of being trapped on an island, further threatens their reproduction rates.

The notorious island is closed to the public for the protection of both people and the snakes. Researchers are the only humans granted access to the mysterious island, and the Brazilian Navy patrols the area looking for trespassers looking to gain notoriety by posting their illegal adventures online.

The cooler they are kept, the longer they will last, which is why florists keep flowers in a refrigerator. Misting cut flowers also helps to prolong their life.

Flowers often wilt because air bubbles trapped in the stem won't let them absorb water. But if you trim stems under water, it will keep this from happening.

Stems can also get plugged with bacteria. Changing the water each day can help. Before ever placing flowers in a vase, remove the lower leaves to prevent bacterial overgrowth and thoroughly clean your vase with with a mixture of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, then rinse thoroughly. If the flowers have been out of water for a while, cut off the bottom inch of the stem for a cleaner cut. And cut at an angle so the stem won't stand flat in the vase.

Flower bouquets from the florist usually come with a packet of flower food, which should be added to your vase as soon as possible. No packet? You can also add a tablespoon of sugar to the water in your vase to nourish your flowers.

Sometimes you can revive wilted flowers. Wrap them in newspaper so the stems are straight. Put the stem and paper in a vase of water until the stem stands up again.

Mortgage rates have slipped lately amid speculation on future Federal Reserve cuts. As of Dec 28, the average interest rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage stood at 6.61%.

Since reaching its highest point in 22 years in late October, the rate has consistently dropped each week, falling by 1.18% during this period.

"After picking up somewhat over the summer, activity in the housing sector has flattened out and remains well below the levels of a year ago, largely reflecting higher mortgage rates," Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said during a Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

As the Fed begins executing rate cuts this year, housing market activity is expected to pick up. Homebuilder activity is predicted to rise as borrowing costs decline, while the lower mortgage rates are expected to attract homebuyers across the country.

The average 30-fixed mortgage rate will hover near 6.3% in 2024, according to Lawrence Yun, the chief economist at the National Association of Realtors (NAR). He also predicts that the Federal Reserve will implement four rate cuts.

With increased inventory and slightly reduced mortgage rates providing buyers with more flexibility, NAR predicts a surge in existing home sales. According to Yun's forecast, approximately 4.71 million existing homes are expected to be sold in 2024, marking a 13.5% rise from the projected 4.1 million units sold last year.

Golf Balls Shall Soon Soar No More Sometimes, there really can be too much of a good thing.

That's what the governing bodies of golf have concluded. In late 2023, the two bodies that jointly write the rules of golf, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A) and the U.S. Golf Association, announced new restrictions aimed at making golf balls travel shorter distances.

The distance professional players can drive golf balls has steadily increased. The PGA reports that in 1980, the average drive among pro golfers was 256 yards. In 2021, the average drive for professional golfers topped 295 yards. This is important for a few reasons, including the simple fact that many courses were designed to host players who couldn't drive so far. The extra distance could, in a sense, "break" the golf course designs.

Course designers put a lot of time into designing challenges for golfers. But with increasingly powerful shots, golfers can simply opt to fly above the fray. Industry insiders have long argued that this could ruin the challenge and strategy behind golfing and might turn the sport into a simple power contest.

The new rules for "legal" golf balls, which won't go into effect until 2028 for pro golfers and 2030 for lower-level golfers, should result in shorter drives. Authorities argue that the new regulations will decrease averages by about five yards from where they are now. Of course, since driving averages have been slowly ticking up, the new golf balls could also cap that growth. So, you might want to stock up on golf balls now before current models become contraband.

National Love Your Pet Day is on February 20th. This important day is not to be confused with October 4th, which commemorates St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Two thirds of U.S. homes have pets, which has increased 18% over the last 25 years. Americans spend over one billion dollars on our pets each year, which really isn’t a bad return on our investment in our unconditional lovegiving, stress-relieving, non-human friends.

The origins of National Pet Day are unknown, but it most likely started on social media. But regardless, this is a wonderful excuse to spend quality time with our pets.

Whether it’s an extra petting session (it may not be wise to stroke your scorpion), or planning an outing in the park, it’s a day for pet appreciation.

And non–pet owners do not have to feel left out on Love Your Pet Day. Local shelters are always in need of volunteers, supplies, and financial assistance. Fostering an animal can also be very helpful. But of course, although there are added responsibilities and expenses involved with pet ownership, it can be one of the best decisions someone ever makes.

So, on February 20th, it’s our turn to express our utter devotion to our pets. Whatever special thing you plan to do, be sure to spoil and appreciate them!

I recently had an awful incident, and I hope to prevent you from having a similar one. One of my coworkers saw a few ants in our optical store. They were near the little refrigerator, so she proceeded to move it to be able to clean all around it. I knew the odorless bug spray can was around, but I did not know it was used. The store was busy, and I paid no attention to what was going on with the ant situation.

Later in the day, I moved the refrigerator back into its place.

When I went home, I decided to relax and read. My eyes started to bother me a bit, so I took off my glasses and rubbed them.

But within minutes, my eyes started to hurt.

Since my wife was making dinner, I assumed it was the cooking that irritated my eyes. Boy was I wrong! For the next several hours, my eyes were inflamed to the point that I almost went to the emergency room. I called our eye doctor, and we figured out that it was the pesticide residue on the sides of the refrigerator that “poisoned” my eyes.

I’ll admit that I did not wash my hands when I got home. But in my defense, I had no idea the bug spray was used. I was in misery for hours. Even after rinsing and eye drops, nothing helped the excruciating pain.

Bottom line, wash your hands often and be careful before rubbing your eyes.

•Treat yard work and housework as exercise. Vacuuming, sweeping, and raking involve arm and leg muscles and burn 245 to 280 calories an hour.

Love Baskets for Valentine’s Day

Back in October, a new trend of gift giving emerged. Around Halloween, people on TikTok began creating ‘Boo Baskets.’ Within these baskets were candy, blankets, and little Halloween or fall-themed items. It was a viral trend on TikTok to make these baskets for friends or significant others.

The trend reappeared in December with a new name, ‘Burr Baskets.’ Instead of being Halloween or fall themed, the Burr Baskets were winter, Christmas, or Hanukkah themed. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I think these trending gift baskets will be reappearing in the theme of love!

Target is an excellent place to buy items to create a basket of your own. In their $5 section, they have Valentine’s themed items such as cups, pillows, candies, and other trinkets.

Additionally, they have heart-shaped pillows and endless choices of Valentine’s Day blankets. My favorite blanket is the plain white one with little, red hearts all around. One of the best things to get to fill up the basket is candy and sweets.

To further personalize the basket and make it more intimate, including a nice card or note is a wonderful idea.

These baskets can be for a significant other, friend, or family member that you want to share and express your love for!

In the annals of African American history, Garrett Morgan stands out as an innovator and a hero. Born in 1877 in Paris, Kentucky, Morgan's inventive mind would go on to save lives and revolutionize the way we navigate our roads.

One of Morgan's most significant inventions was the smoke safety hood, which he developed after seeing firefighters struggling to survive in choking smoke. Morgan rose to national prominence after a tragedy befell Cleveland, Ohio, in 1916. The Waterworks Tunnel explosion had trapped a group of men underground, engulfing them in a thick cloud of toxic smoke and trapping rescuers as well. Ohio fire officials recalled a demonstration of Morgan's device and sent for him in the middle of the night.

Morgan arrived at the scene, still in his pajamas, with four safety hoods. He went into the tunnel with other volunteers and succeeded rescuing seven men.

But Morgan's contributions didn't stop there. In 1923, he patented another invention that would change the way we navigate our streets: the three-position traffic signal.

This precursor to today's traffic lights featured a "stop," "go," and "all-way stop" system.

Morgan's traffic signal was a significant improvement over the existing manual systems, reducing the risk of accidents and providing a standardized, efficient method of traffic control.

Japan’s Love Affair with Fiddler The original Broadway run of the stage musical Fiddler on the Roof was a bit of an unlikely smash, with investors and media figures skeptical that audiences would respond to the tale of an impoverished Jewish family in the waning days of tsarist Russia. But audiences loved it, and the show went on after its 1964 opening to break records and become a musical theater classic. Especially in Japan.

The first Japanese production of Yane No Ue No Baiorin-hiki ( Japanese for Fiddler on the Roof ) premiered in Tokyo in 1967 to immediate success. The central plot elements -- family drama, father-daughter relationships, the tension between tradition and change -- resonated profoundly with Japanese audiences.

When Joseph Stein, who wrote the book for the original English version, visited Japan to watch rehearsals ahead of the premiere, the producer asked him how American audiences could possibly understand the show, since the story was "so Japanese."

Fiddler on the Roof has been revived more than 1,300 times in Japan, including a special three-month national tour in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of the original Tokyo production. And it still packs a hefty emotional punch for Japanese theatergoers. According to journalist Alisa Solomon in the New Yorker, one Tokyo-based journalist wept during a conversation with a member of the 2015 Broadway revival cast as she described the show's flawless depiction of Japanese traditional family life.

What to Know about Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance made in the liver that aids with critical functions, like hormone production and digesting fat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly two in five adults in the U.S. have excessive cholesterol levels, which can increase the risk for cardiovascular disease and other health complications.

There are two kinds of cholesterol: "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL). High blood cholesterol usually means too much LDL and not enough HDL. LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, can accumulate in the arteries and narrow the space where blood can flow. HDL, the good kind, takes LDL cholesterol to the liver to be flushed from the body and helps prevent heart attacks or strokes. The only way to know whether you have high cholesterol is to take a blood test.

High LDL cholesterol usually has no symptoms, though people with high cholesterol often have high blood pressure.

A simple blood test called a lipid panel can measure your lipid levels, and your health care provider can interpret the results according to your age, sex, and health history.

Lifestyle factors and your genes can both contribute to high cholesterol. Smoking, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, and a poor diet can all affect your blood cholesterol. Many people can lower their LDL and raise their HDL with dietary and lifestyle changes.

Most physicians recommend a class of drugs called statins as the first-line medication therapy for high cholesterol.
