The History of the Artificial Tree The American Christmas Tree Association reports that 75 percent of Americans display a Christmas tree, and roughly 84 percent of them will put up an artificial one. The first artificial Christmas trees appeared in Germany in the late 19th century.

At the time, Germany was suffering extensive deforestation and people needed a greener alternative. Early artificial trees actually used goose feathers, dyed green to emulate bristles. The trees didn't offer the lushest experience but became popular.

In the early 1900s, Addis Brush Company, then busy making toilet brushes, realized they could make betterlooking artificial trees. The company took their toilet brushes, dyed them green, and used them to make artificial trees. Trees made out brushes and similar materials remained popular through much of the early 20th century.

In the 1950s, aluminum trees, which ditched green for silvery leaves, became popular. The futuristic look meshed well with the budding space race. However, the aluminum trees ended up on the naughty list of Charlie Brown. In 1965's ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas,’ Charlie took issue with the overcommercialization of Christmas and targeted the aluminum Christmas tree in particular. Charlie chose a puny green tree over an aluminum one, sending a message to millions of Americans, who began shunning aluminum trees.

Artificial trees would return to form in the 1980s, when PVC plastic trees emulating natural green trees became hugely popular. Since then, artificial trees have dominated the market.

Hanukkah Past and Present The story of Hanukkah begins in occupied Jerusalem, in the year 164 B.C. The Greek Hellenistic King Antiochus and his soldiers entered the Temple of Solomon and despoiled all the holy vessels, including sacred olive oils used to light the menorah, which was kept permanently lighted. Greek authorities issued new edicts forbidding Jewish practices such as Sabbath observance. Even to profess that one was a Jew was punishable by death.

The high Priest Mattisyahu formed a band of guerrillas and fled to the hills, executing night raids on their tormentors.

Judah Maccabee, one of the greatest freedom fighters in Jewish history, gathered an army. With God's help, he managed to defeat the enemy and recapture Jerusalem.

On re-entering the devastated Holy Temple, the victorious Jews searched for any sacred oil that might have remained sealed and usable. They found just one small flagon of oil -enough to burn for one day, but eight days were needed to prepare more oil for this purpose. The miracle of Hanukkah was that this tiny amount of oil burned in the gold menorahfor eight full days, enabling the new kosher oil to be prepared in the meantime.

Today, it is common for people to display their Hanukkah lights in the window. It is a joyous time when children receive gifts of money or small presents. They play a game by spinning a top (dreidel) that has a different Hebrew letter on each side.

The tradition began when Greeks forbade the study of the Torah. The people studied in groups and quickly took out the dreidel if Greek soldiers came near.

When it comes to remodeling, there are plenty of suggestions and opinions about where you should put your money, and how much you can expect to get back on it. Some say kitchens, some say bathrooms, others say family rooms.

The person who knows best what your house needs is you, maybe with the advice of a real estate agent or architect.

Contractors may overstate how much you'll get back from what you spend.

Some remodeling projects add as much to the value of a house as they cost. But the key to planning should be to make the house more enjoyable for you and your family, rather than to spend extravagantly on a feature that may or may not interest a future buyer.

Most buyers have a checklist of must-haves. Anything not on the checklist, even something attractive like a solarium, won't be highly valued. If resale is a primary concern, stick to the basics. A unique home takes longer to sell and may bring a lower price than a conventional home.

Adding a bathroom puts your home into a higher tier of properties in the minds of disciplined home buyers with checklists. But there is no need to make it fancy, say home designers. An expensive jacuzzi bathtub will not reap a good return.

As you remodel, architects advise that it's important to preserve your home's character. If you have a two-story home, make a two-story addition. You'll need a foundation and a roof anyway, and the cost of the additional floor might not be as much as you expect.

Think ahead as to how you will use the new space. Is there a place for kids to drop their backpacks? Is there a walk-in pantry? If little things matter to you, they will probably matter to the next owner as well.

Always think of yourself as both a consumer of housing and as a would-be-seller.

When you wear both hats, you can make smart choices and easy compromises.

Happy Birthday “Dandy” Sandy Koufax

“Hitting Koufax is like drinking your coffee with a fork,” (Pittsburgh Pirates’ Willie Stargell). Sandy Koufax may be baseball’s most dominant pitcher of all time. While he only pitched for twelve years, he was voted the youngest to get elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972.

Born in Brooklyn on December 30, 1935, Koufax was to attend the University of Cincinnati on a basketball scholarship. But fate would have him sign with the Brooklyn Dodgers. An inconsistent pitcher at first, a frustrated Koufax almost quit after the 1960 season.

Dodgers catcher Norm Sherry advised Koufax to throw with more control and variety and not “try to break the sound barrier.” Sherry had his point. Koufax had an astonishing record of 111-34 with a 2.02 ERA from 1962 to 1966. He threw four no – hitters, and in the 1963 World Series, he beat Whitey Ford twice as L.A. swept the Yankees.

Koufax was slated to pitch game one of the 1965 World Series against the Minnesota Twins, but the game fell on Yom Kippur. Observing the holy day, Koufax attended synagogue rather than take the mound. He then went on to blank the Twins in games five and seven. Dubbed “The Left Arm of God,” Koufax will always be highly regarded as both a pitcher and as a person. Enjoy turning 88, Sandy!

Average Body Temps Have Changed The average human body temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Everyone knows that, right? According to a new study published in September in JAMA Internal Medicine, everyone might be ... well, wrong. Researchers evaluated the temperatures of more than 126,000 people between 2008 and 2017 and found that the average was really about 97.9 degrees.

This is notably lower than the old standard of 98.6, established in the 1850s by German physician Carl Wunderlich.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Wunderlich supposedly took more than a million readings from 25,000 patients and averaged the results.

This new study isn't the first time researchers have called Wunderlich's work into question. In 1992, University of Maryland researchers concluded that the average was a somewhat lower 98.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, they found that temperatures were lowest in the morning and peaked around 6 p.m., with additional variations for different genders and races. Other studies have found that body temperature naturally cools throughout our lifetimes.

But Wunderlich wasn't necessarily wrong at the time, said Dr. Juliet Parsonnet of Stanford Medicine in an interview with the New York Times. Parsonnet, who led the recent JAMA Internal Medicine study, thinks that humans may simply now run a bit cooler than they did during Wunderlich's time. Without access to modern dental care or pharmaceutical interventions, Parsonnet said, Wunderlich's patient's may have suffered constant low-grade inflammation that raised their temperatures.

One AI Company to Rule Them All Could software soon be assembled on an assembly line, much like the car? A decade ago, the idea might have seemed farfetched. Now, artificial intelligence has shifted to the forefront of everyone's mind, and it turns out, software may soon be assembled in AI factories.

Foxconn, headquartered in Taiwan, is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer. They recently announced a partnership with Nvidia, which produces a variety of AI components. Foxconn is looking to build an AI-driven software assembly line that will be able to teach itself to develop software platforms. In the words of Foxconn, the resulting software programs will be all but impossible for humans to build. If Foxconn can deliver, these software solutions might easily upend many sectors, including the automobile industry.

Akin to Henry Ford revolutionizing the auto industry with the introduction of the modern assembly line, the drive to create AI factories is driven by Foxconn's desire to become a major player in the electric vehicle craze. Foxconn is already famous for assembling many of the 2.35 billion iPhones sold over the years. Now they're looking to disrupt the automobile industry with white-label automobiles. Rather than dealing with the hassle of marketing cars, Foxconn currently sells vehicles that other companies can sell.

Foxconn's status as a gadget manufacturer has some people doubting if they can dominate the AI market. However, at least with automobiles, some analysts believe Foxconn may follow in the wake of industry disruptor Tesla.

Meta Sued Over Deceptive Marketing Attorneys general in 42 states have pushed forward with lawsuits that allege social media company Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook, has been using deceptive and addictive marketing tactics to target kids and teens. The attorneys general also allege that Meta has designed its platforms, specifically Facebook and Instagram, to encourage children to stay on the platform for longer and return frequently.

The attorneys allege that Meta leveraged secret algorithms, incessant alerts and notifications, and also infinitely scrollable content feeds to get kids addicted to the platforms.

The AGs further claim that Meta is having a detrimental impact on the mental health of kids, arguing that Meta's own internal research has proven that their practices may prove detrimental to children. A whistleblower who leaked documents in 2021 reported that Meta was aware of the fact that "thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse."

Consumer protection laws vary from state to state, but the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) prohibits advertisers from using personal data for those under the age of 13. Government attorneys have long accused Meta of violating this rule.

Some attorneys general also allege that Meta's advertising is deceptive because it fails to acknowledge that its platforms are addictive and potentially harmful. In 1998, tobacco companies were held liable for deceptive practices because they too failed to acknowledge that cigarettes were addictive and harmful.

Enduring Christmas Songs from the 70s The 1970s started with the upbeat rhythm of The Jackson 5 and a 12-yearold Michael Jackson belting the 1934 song "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," in the bouncy Motown sound that one suspects is still popular. Still, the 1966 Supremes version climbed higher on the charts.

But this song really didn't set the overall tone for a decade in which Christmas songs were often darker and more political.

In 1972, John Lennon and Yoko Ono made "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," a song that wishes everyone a Happy Christmas, with a traditional sound but an embedded political message.

"Eat, drink and be merry" was the theme of Elton John's Christmas 1973 tune "Step Into Christmas." There was no rebellion in Elton's song, but it hasn't endured.

Greg Lake's sullen 1975 tune, "I believe in Father Christmas," bemoaned the lack of peace in the world and ended with: "The Christmas we get we deserve."

In 1973, we heard the optimistic "Merry Xmas Everybody" from glam rockers Slade. The song focused on the fun of Christmas and urged that we "Look to the future now; It's only just begun." It's upbeat with a 70s rock sound.

From 1976, Jethro Tull's somewhat traditional sounding "Ring Out Solstice Bells" includes Ian Anderson's flute. But the song is really about the winter solstice, with lyrics like "Seven druids dance in seven time."

Eye infections happen all the time and are caused by different reasons. One reason may surprise you.

Eye makeup, particularly mascara and eyeliner, can cause many eye infections.

So why does this happen? Because makeup can easily become contaminated.

Eyelashes and eyelids, naturally, have bacteria. And mascara and eyeliner can easily pick up this bacteria during use. Over time, bacteria can grow and cause an eye infection. Bacteria grows especially fast in dark, warm, and moist environments. And things can get worse if makeup is shared with others.

The holiday season is upon us. It’s time to start getting in the holiday spirit. Many places have already begun to do this, such as Starbucks, Dunkin’, and Chick-fil-a. Most stores are starting to put up decorations, and a celebration vibe is in the air.

Some of my favorite brands offer seasonal drinks.

Starbucks released their holiday drinks in November, and this year’s holiday menu has quite the selection. There’s the Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Brûlée Latte, Iced Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai, Iced Sugar Cookie Almondmilk Latte, Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino, and their signature Hot Chocolate.

They also released their lineup of holiday snacks such as the Peppermint Brownie Cake Pop, Gingerbread Loaf, and Snowman Cookie. On November 16, Starbucks hosted their ‘Red Cup Day’ in which anyone that orders a holiday drink gets a reusable red cup, along with their order.

Managing Joyous Christmas Chaos The kids have been eyeing those presents for a long time.

They are itching to open them. Then on Christmas morning (or Christmas Eve), they tear into the stack, leaving behind them a chaotic tangle of wrap, bags, bows, and stuff. It's over in 15 minutes, but the cleanup will take way longer than that.

The alternative is to have a system where everyone takes turns opening a present, one at a time. But why avoid the joyous Christmas chaos?

1. To respect guests. Grandma or Aunt Ruth is joining your family for Christmas. They have probably spent money and time picking presents for everyone. According to Gear Patrol, it is really about modern car architecture. There is actually no place for the glass window to go when back windows go down. The lower edge of the rear door of most cars curves upwards along the back axle wheel well. So there just isn't enough vertical space in the door for the entire window to fit. The Ultimate Movie Pie Fights The idea of the greatest pie fight belongs to comic duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in their silent film, Battle of the Century, released in 1927. Laurel decided to go big. "Let's give them so many pies that there never will be room for any more pie pictures in the history of movies," he recounted to a biographer.

So, they gathered 3,000 pies and the fight was on. But that film was eventually lost, and only the memory of the pie fight remained. At least until 2013, when a collector found a reel containing the fight. Now you can find it on YouTube.

As it turns out, that wasn't the biggest pie fight of all time. The 1965 movie, The Great Race, was a must-see for all kids of the era because it contained the biggest pie fight ever. The story follows an auto race between two daredevils: Jack Lemmon (playing Professor Fate) and Tony Curtis (playing The Great Leslie). Lemmon kicks off the pie fight by falling into a two-story cake. Tony Curtis miraculously stays un-pied until his love interest, Natalie Wood, scores a direct hit at the end.

This four-minute fight took 4,000 pies thrown over five days of filming and a sweet $1.5 million in 2023 dollars.

When director Blake Edwards yelled out the final cut, the cast promptly hit him with several hundred pies. The expense and the number of pies make it the greatest pie fight of all time, but in the history of pie fight cinema, The Three Stooges also rank with the 1941 slapstick comedy, In The Sweet Pie and Pie, in which the stooges make a mess throwing pies at society people.
