Goodbye 2023, Hello 2024 and the beginning of a brand-new year filled with unlimited possibilities! Now that the holiday feasts are over, it’s a great time to implement a healthy New Year’s resolution—if it’s to stop procrastinating, plan on starting that next month. If your resolution is to perhaps finally start that new business (or grow your existing business), give us a call to find out about the great specials we offer for new advertisers. We’ll also be adding new communities to our mailed circulation in the coming months. Monday, January 15th is Martin Luther King Day which honors the life and achievements of a great American civil rights leader (see article on page 35.) And be sure to check out our expanded ‘Great Eats Beat’ section starting on page 24, where you’ll find great savings at a wide selection of restaurants here in our area. If you reside outside one of the 36 communities the Neighborhood News direct mails to each month, we also offer a free digital subscription – just email our office to request having your email added, and you’ll automatically receive our issue that you can read on your phone or computer. You can also read our issues online at www.NeighborhoodNewsInfo.com or on our Facebook Page (Neighborhood News-Lake Worth.) From our staff and families, we wish everyone a healthy and prosperous 2024 year!

New Year's Day: World's Oldest Celebration The new year has begun. It's our chance to start again, to do it right this time and have another shot at success. The idea has prevailed since the dawn of history. New year celebrations date back more than 4,000 years, to the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians. Their celebration of the new year occurred around March 23 each year -- logical for them since spring represented the birth of new life. The Babylonians made New Year's resolutions, too -- their most popular goal of self-improvement was "to return borrowed farm equipment." Romans observed the new year on March 25, but their calendar had fallen out of sync with the sun. So, in 46 B.C., Julius Caesar established what is known as the Julian calendar, with January 1 as the first day of the year. But in order to do it, Caesar had to let the previous year run for 445 days. The tradition of using a baby to signify the new year began in Greece around 600 B.C. Greeks honored the god of wine, Dionysus, with a baby in a basket, representing the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility. Egyptians also used a baby as the symbol of rebirth. And Christians began to celebrate the new year with a baby, which was said to symbolize the birth of the newborn king, Jesus Christ. The use of an image of a baby with a festive banner as a symbolic representation of the new year was brought to early America by the Germans. They had done so since the 14th century.

Calcium Does the Body Good In today's health-conscious world, it is widely known that calcium is essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth. However, its importance goes beyond just skeletal health. Calcium plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and blood clotting. Calcium is primarily obtained through dietary sources, with dairy products being the most well-known. Cow's milk, for instance, is a rich source of calcium, providing approximately 300 milligrams per cup. However, for those who do not consume dairy or are lactose intolerant, there are numerous alternative sources of calcium available. Leafy green vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and spinach are excellent non-dairy sources of calcium. These vegetables not only provide calcium but also offer additional health benefits due to their high fiber and vitamin content. Other plant-based sources of calcium include tofu, almonds, and fortified plant-based milk alternatives like soy or almond milk. Vitamin D, often referred to as the "sunshine vitamin," plays a vital role in calcium absorption. It helps the body absorb and utilize calcium effectively. Sun exposure is the primary source of vitamin D, but it can also be obtained through certain foods like oily fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy products. Over time, insufficient dietary calcium can lead to various health issues, including Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones, cramps, numbness, and even heart problems. 8 NN

The Cruise of a Lifetime — NOT! The cruise industry has been hauling in guests through the post-pandemic years. More than 31 million people took to the seas in 2023, with increased demand for longer cruises corresponding with remote work trends. Life at Sea Cruises advertised a three-year cruise for $196,000 for solo travelers, while packages for couples started at $231,000. The cruise was to visit 140 countries and all seven continents. While longer cruises of up to 90 days and longer are becoming popular, this was one of the most ambitious attempts yet. One small problem: There was no actual cruise ship. Life at Sea Cruises, owned by the Turkish company Miray Cruises, booked the cruise while trying to secure a ship, a process they didn’t think would be difficult. But time and again, the ships were sold or made unavailable. When Nov. 1 rolled around, the date the ship was supposed to depart from Turkey, Life at Sea had plenty of paid guests – but still no ship. They rescheduled the cruise to start 30 days later from the Netherlands. But once again, they were unable to secure a ship. Finally, they announced that the voyage was cancelled. This left the cruise guests in a pickle. Some folks planning to partake in the Life at Sea journey actually sold or rented out their homes, figuring that they'd be spending years on the high seas. Many people stored their belongings, and most sent belongings to be loaded on the ship before the voyage. The company says it is working on processing refunds.

Social Security— Does it Pay to Wait?
Everyone knows that waiting to collect Social Security at your full retirement age gives you a much higher benefit than claiming it at 62. But is that collective wisdom true? Not always. Like everything else, it depends on your circumstances. If, at age 62, you don't need to use your Social Security to live, you could invest it for the eight years between 62 and 70. Keep in mind that if you are younger than full retirement age, you can only earn $21,240 working at a job. Earn more than that limit and Social Security will deduct $1 from your payments for every $2 you earn above the limit. When you reach full retirement age, there is no limit on how much you can earn and still receive benefits. Still, for those eight years until you reach age 70, if you can invest all of the Social Security check, you could end up with a tidy sum after eight years. A $700 monthly check invested at just 3 percent interest starting at age 62 would grow to $76,744 by age 70 ($67,200 in contributions and $8,844 in interest,) according to GoBankingRates. You would therefore have more years of retirement and an investment bonus, but only if you can afford not to spend the investment. For most people, however, it pays to wait as long as you can. Social Security docks a percentage of your check if you retire early. You lose 30 percent of your benefit if you claim between 62 and 67. If you wait beyond full retirement age, you get a bonus and your $1,000 check would be about $1,240.

Start Small for Big Changes
There is something about the number 1. From that starting point, you get an infinite number of nexts. Maybe that's why our mind turns to resolutions every New Year -- the holiday that celebrates the passage of time. What was. What could be. And what will be. We want to shape the time to come, and we do it through resolutions. Nearly 45 percent of Americans make resolutions, but only about 8 percent achieve their goals. But what could you do to be more successful? Start small to make big changes and give it time. Exercise: 15 minutes extra or 15 minutes total. Then add a small amount of extra movement every day and see how it makes a difference. The key is dedication. If you are going to walk, get the right clothes for freezing cold, blazing hot, or rainy. Then do it every day for 15 minutes. No exceptions -- it's only 15 minutes. Weight: Make one firm resolution related to eating. Start tracking your weight regularly. Lots of apps do that. Maybe you will not eat at your desk or between meals. Make that a habit, then move on to another small step. Money: Could you use $365 right now? You would have it if you saved $7 per week for one year. A little adds up and slowly, you find ways to save more. Automate it. Attitude: You want to be a better person? Focus on feeling gratitude for what you have now. It takes no time and requires little effort. See where it takes you. 12 NN

Is Self-Checkout Checking Out? A recent study that examined 4.5 billion transactions found that self-checkout accounted for 38 percent of checkout lanes last year. But now, many retailers have begun to pause and even roll back self-checkout lanes. Self-checkout was widely viewed as a way trim labor costs and speed up shopping, but the real-world costs may outweigh the savings. In the U.K., Nigel Murray, managing director of supermarket chain Booths, noted that customers complained about how slow the self-checkout process was and also that the machines were impersonal and unreliable. The British chain is removing self-checkout from all but two of their over 50 stores. Target is piloting a program to now limit self-checkout to 10 items or less, essentially turning them into express lanes. And Walmart has announced plans to hire more cashiers. So why is self-checkout failing to meet expectations? Among other things, checkout clerks are more skilled than previously acknowledged. Customers buying produce, for example, often ring up the wrong produce on the checkout machines. To customers, a banana may just be a banana, but one banana might cost 25 cents and another a dollar. Another major problem is theft. Some customers might ring up a pricey organic avocado as a plain Jane avocado. Other customers forget to ring up some items in their carts. On top of that, there are logistical hang-ups. For example, buying booze can all but shut down self-checkout lanes as clerks rush around to verify IDs. Shoppers can expect to see more human clerks in the coming year.

First Gene Editing Wins Approval
Regulators in the U.K. just approved the world's first CRISPR-derived gene editing therapy, and U.S. approval is expected soon, according to the journal Nature Biotechnology. Manufacturers Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics designed the treatment, which is marketed under the trade name Casgevy, to cure the blood disorders sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia. Invented in 2009, CRISPR technology (short for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) can precisely target and edit specific pieces of genetic code in living organisms, according to the Broad Institute. Sickle cell disease is a result of a faulty gene that alters hemoglobin production and leads to malformed sickle-shaped red blood cells. The irregular shape effectively clogs blood vessels and causes episodes of extreme pain. In beta thalessemia, the body does not produce sufficient hemoglobin, which can cause a number of complications and shorten lifespans. Casgevy uses CRISPR technology to precisely edit the faulty gene and direct the body to produce functioning hemoglobin, effectively curing the disorders. But two major obstacles currently remain for most patients, however -each treatment will cost millions of dollars and require an extended hospital stay, and relatively few physicians currently have the necessary expertise. 14 NN

Housing Market Outlook for 2024 By Sheryl Volk / Exit Realty 561-389-8670
This year looks more promising to buy a home than in 2023. But the question every buyer asks is, buy now or wait? Home prices skyrocketed throughout the pandemic, and the Federal Reserve's work to tame inflation has sent mortgage rates soaring. The combination led many would-be buyers to pick the "wait" side of the equation. The volume of existing home sales was down more than 14 percent from October 2022 to October 2023, according to the National Association of Realtors. And Fannie Mae Home Purchase Sentiment Index, released in early November, showed an overwhelming 85 percent of consumers believe it's a bad time to buy a house. However, after being at a constant disadvantage for the past few years, things have started to look better for buyers in many parts of the country. Days-on-market figures are up, giving the buyer more time to make an informed decision. But if a buyer finds a property they feel is their ideal home, they should not delay. When mortgage rates drop, more buyers will come back to the market and home prices will rise. And no matter which way the real estate market is leaning though, buying now means you can start building equity immediately. Ultimately, the decision of when to buy a home is up to you. Life goes on, whether the timing is perfect or not.
Remember, date the rate and marry the home!
This means that if the rates drop, re-finance later. Let's talk and make 2024 the year for you and your family!

Neuroscience research provides some great insight as to why old habits can seem so hard to change. If you struggle to achieve your New Year’s Resolution(s), you’re not alone. And there’s a good reason as to why. Knowing why can help us create a better strategy to achieving our goal(s). Donald Hebb, a Canadian neuroscientist in the 1940s, noted that once a circuit of neurons is formed, when one neuron fires, the others fire as well—strengthening the whole circuit. The Hebbian theory: “Neurons that fire together, wire together” means that circuits of neurons maintain our habits, and our habits strengthen those neuronal circuits. There are billions of neurons in the brain; each neuron connects with up to 10,000 other neurons, resulting in trillions of synaptic connections. These interconnected neurons become circuitry pathways. The more the pathway is taken, the more “hard-wired” it gets…and the more automatic a habit becomes. For example, if we eat chips every time we sit on the coach, couch = chips. So those chip “cravings” may haunt us at the mere site of our couch! But this applies to all habits, good ones and the not so good ones. You’ve heard of neuroplasticity. We can undo these habits over time by consciously not doing a certain behavior, or better yet, by doing a healthier one until that new pathway is hard-wired. For example, make that herbal tea after dinner before you sit down on the couch… in lieu of dessert. You got this!

Matthew Butterick is an unlikely warrior against Big Tech. A web entrepreneur turned lawyer, Butterick is a creative at heart who forged a new career in typography -- specifically, typography for legal documents and correspondence. But when generative AI blew up and raised pressing copyright questions, Butterick decided to fall back on his law degree and act. Butterick and his co-counsel, San Francisco-based litigator Joseph Saveri, filed some of the earliest AI-related copyright infringement claims alleging unlawful use of copyrighted material to train AI models. But the battle is just starting, and much bigger combatants are joining the fray. In October 2023, Universal Music Group sued AI startup Anthropic, alleging that its Claude 2 model reproduced song lyrics almost word-for-word when prompted. Microsoft, itself a 49 percent stakeholder in OpenAI, ran afoul of the famously aggressive Walt Disney legal team when its Bing Image Creator generated fake movie posters that featured the Walt Disney logo. Microsoft promptly acted to prevent the Image Creator from spitting out more Disneyowned material, but questions persist about whether Disney content was used to train the model. OpenAI and Google both assert that their use of copyrighted material to train AI models qualifies as "fair use" under existing copyright laws and promise to defend customers who face copyright infringement claims. But as the federal government ponders new regulation and courts affirm that AI-generated material cannot be copyrighted, users should be cautious.

Jan 19th— Remembering Janis Joplin
Live A Life In Security and Protection!
By Marc Solomon / NN Contributing Writer
Serving Individuals & Groups Since 1995
I recently read the Janis Joplin biography, Love, Janis, written by her sister, Laura. It was a wonderful book. Love, Janis, also had a successful Broadway run. The book was a pleasure to read about the life of the dynamic singer and songwriter. While reading, I came across the birthday of Janis Joplin, January 19, 1943. Her birthday is as good a time as any to remember the Texas-born singer who left us way too soon in 1970. With hits such as Piece of My Heart, Mercedes Benz, Tell Mama, and (my personal favorite), Try (Just a Little Bit Harder), Joplin will be remembered her for her unique, bluesinspired voice and elaborate stage persona. Her style of singing differed from the softer sounds of Joan Baez of Judy Collins. Her musical journey formulated primarily during her collegiate years after moving out to California. She was the lead singer for the band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. While she said the band was like a family to her, Joplin soon opted for a solo career. Pearl, released posthumously in 1971 earned Grammy nominations and contained the popular single, Me and Bobby McGee. As much as Joplin excelled as a singer, she struggled greatly with alcohol and heroin. Her death was due to an accidental heroin overdose in California on October 4, 1970.

It’s Your Duty—Screen the Booty Here's some good news: Deaths from colorectal cancer have been dropping since the 1980s. And there's really no mystery as to why -- more people are getting tested. Colorectal cancer occurs when cells in the lower digestive tract grow out of control. Most of these cells start out as noncancerous polyps. Removing the slow-growing polyps can prevent cancer before it starts. According to the American Cancer Society, anyone at average risk for colon cancer should start regular screenings at age 45. There are some risk factors you can control, and some you can't. Living a healthy lifestyle is one factor in your control. Maintain a healthy weight, stay physically active and don't smoke. Enjoy a low-fat diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid a diet that is heavy on red meats and processed meats. Keep vitamin D levels normal. Of course, some factors are out of your control. If you have a personal or family history of polyps, you may be at higher risk. A history of inflammatory bowel disease or Crohn's disease could also put you at higher risk. Unless you have some of the high-risk factors, you should get screened every 10 years until age 75. If you have risk factors, your doctor will probably recommend screening every five years.

MLK Day January 15th — The Promise Lives On The people who heard Martin Luther King, Jr. speak in person, or live on the television or radio--those people have grown old. Is it time that those older people ask the young: Have you heard his speech? Have you read about Martin Luther King's dream? Any of King's speeches evoke spirit and truth, but one speech shines out for its hopeful and, in retrospect, its chilling words. That is the Mountaintop speech, given April 3, 1968, at the Church of Christ in Memphis, Tenn. In this speech, King mused that if given any time in history to be, he would have chosen that moment, that very day above all others. And he describes his brush with death years before when he was stabbed, and how close he came to missing that day. And then he proclaims that he has seen the Promised Land: "We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now because I've been to the mountaintop... Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And he's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!" The next day, on April 4, 1968, King was assassinated. King's words, later recalled, send a shiver through hearts and minds. Those words are worth recalling even 55 years later, that one was led by God to the mountaintop, and he saw the promised future fulfilled.

Universal Studios Orlando Resort is a must visit for anyone that loves amusement. Universal has three theme parks: Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and their water park, Volcano Bay. They are also building a new park, Epic Universe, expected to open in the summer of 2025. The new park will include Super Mario World, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, and Classic Monsters Island. Islands of Adventure is known to be the more exciting of the parks, considering it has more rides and rollercoasters. Islands of Adventure includes Toon Lagoon, Jurassic Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Seuss Island, and Marvel Super Hero Island. It’s known for their rides like The VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, and The Incredible Hulk Coaster. Universal Studios features the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Men in Black, Simpsons, Minions, and more. The most popular rides at Universal Studios are Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, and Revenge of the Mummy. Universal Studios is one of my favorite places to go. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan so seeing the Wizarding World come to life is like a dream come true. Universal is truly an amazing experience, and one that should be checked off the bucket list.

A loud pounding on the door awakened a man and his wife in the middle of the night. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, trying to keep his balance in the pouring rain, is asking for a push. “Not a chance,” says the husband, “it's raining like heck and it's 3:00 in the morning!” He slams the door and returns to bed. “Who was that?” asked his wife. “Just some drunk guy asking for a push,” he answers. “Well, did you help him?” she asks. “No, I did not, it’s 3am in the morning and it’s bloody pouring rain out there!” “Well, you have a short memory,” says his wife. “Don't you remember about three months ago when our car broke down, and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself for not willing to return kindness,” says his wife. The man feels bad, gets dressed, and goes out into the pounding rain. He calls out into the dark, “Hello, are you still there?” “Yes,” comes back the answer from the drunk. “Do you still need a push?” calls out the husband. “Yes, please!” comes the reply from the dark. “Where are you?” asks the husband. The drunk replies, "I'm over here on the swing!”

The Ancient Medicine Ball
It’s slammed down, thrown, lifted, twisted, kicked, and at times, even hit with sledge hammers. Ancient drawings date the medicine ball (also known as a med ball) to almost 3,000 years ago, when Persian wrestlers trained with sand filled bladders. In ancient Greece, the physician Hippocrates, often regarded as the ‘Father of Modern Medicine,' stuffed animal skins with sand for his patients for medicinal purposes. He prescribed patients to gently lob them back and forth as a method of preventing and recovering from certain injuries. Their association with physical therapy gave the balls their name. Today you can find the heavy balls in gyms and fitness classes across the world. The balls are made in a variety of sizes, from softball to basketball-sized, and can be ordered in weights from two to 35 pounds. The cost ranges from $20 to full sets for up to $300. The advantage of using a medicine ball is that it encourages strength, neuromuscular coordination, explosive power, as well as lateral (side-to-side) movement. The simplicity of the ball attracts users of all levels. No adjustments are needed. Just move with the ball -- or throw it to the ground. Try the med ball with lunges, jumps, squats, pushups (with one hand on top of the ball), planks, and weighted sit ups. 44 NN

Alien Speculation on the Rise In 2023, Mexico's Congress was presented with mummified bodies from Peru that Mexican journalist Jaime Maussan claims are aliens. Experts testifying before Mexico's Congress stopped short of claiming they were aliens, but did say the bodies were likely real and organic, fueling further speculation given the seemingly inhuman nature of the bodies. Debates over extraterrestrial life forms might have drawn eye rolls or even ridicule a few short years ago, but increasingly, legislative bodies are digging deeper. David Grusch, a former Air Force officer, testified before the U.S. Congress in July 2023, alleging a widespread government cover-up of evidence of alien life. However, he said he would not name the people involved for fear of reprisal. American fighter pilot Ryan Graves also testified before Congress and claimed he encountered unidentified flying objects multiple times while in service. Even former President Barack Obama has said the U.S. military has encountered unidentified flying objects and said the government had no idea what some of the objects were. Two months ago in India, an unidentified object in the state of Manipur shut the Imphal airport down for several hours. There might be earthly explanations for perhaps some of the objects. Some argue that UFO stories are just tales designed to distract from real government activities. Some say alien bodies are simply fakes, and UFOs are just topsecret American drones. But UFO sightings and recordings are definitely on the rise.
