Popular Costumes for 2023

We are going to see a lot of pink Barbies this Halloween, according to Best Products. If you don't want to buy something, Barbie is an easy DIY. Just assemble a selection of pink clothing. Don't forget accessories, like a pink purse or a pink visor. Pink nail polish. Blonde wig. For a Western Barbie look, go for a white cowboy hat and a pink westernpatterned scarf. You can even buy humansized Barbie and Ken display boxes on Amazon if you want to Halloween with your other.

Super Mario remains a favorite and easy to do: Overalls, red shirt, red hat, work boots. Boom. Or for a throw-back to the 90s (and before), try an easy Wednesday Addams costume. Braided black wig, black dress with white collar, scowl.

Be a Hellfire Club member from Stranger Things 4. Get a Hellfire Club t-shirt, pair with a backward baseball cap, and distressed jeans, and ta da: You are a member of the Dungeons and Dragons club. Another easy winner, be Bob Ross. Jeans, shirt, big fluffy brown wig and beard, plus a brush and paint palette for happy, happy trees. And don't forget the gimmick costumes:

Cereal Killer: Hang a cereal box around your neck and carry a big club or stick. Magic 8 Ball: Wear all black, add a big 8 on your shirt and make a cardboard pyramid to hang from your neck or head that says: Signs point to yes; Ask me again later, and so forth.

Sticky Invention Sparked by Burrs

While taking a stroll through the Alps, Swiss engineer George de Mestral noticed burrs sticking to his pants. Burrs can be rather tenacious, but he realized that if he could create a synthetic version to use with clothing, it could be quite useful. George put a burr under a microscope and saw that its ability to grip was due to tiny hooks.

George first tried to make similar small hooks out of cotton, but the cotton fibers quickly forgot the loop shape. Next, he started toying with nylon and polyester fibers and made a crucial discovery: these materials had a type of "memory" and when shaped into hooks, they'd remain in that form.

It took him a decade to complete the work, but by 1952, he founded "Velcro," which is actually a company name, while the fasteners themselves are called hook and loop. These fasteners consist of two parts: One side features countless tiny hooks, while the other sports a vast number of loops. Push them together, and the loops will snag the hooks.

George assumed his invention would replace zippers, but fashion critics quickly dinged hook and loop fasteners as ugly and cheap looking. Yet as NASA set its sights on the stars, they realized that Velcro could fasten things in zero gravity and began to use the fasteners en masse. With the space race then at the center of popular culture, Velcro's credentials propelled it to fame, and companies like Puma started using it for shoes and gear. Hook and loop is now a popular fastener due to its practicality, and Velcro pulls in roughly $1.8 billion per year.

Columbus’s Famous Search for Spice

Cinnamon, pepper, cloves and nutmeg are common seasonings on our kitchen shelves. We take them for granted. Back in the 1400s, the search for such spices spurred the ocean voyage that led to Columbus' famous journey across the ocean. The voyage was about more than finding gold.

Middle Eastern and North African merchants had a monopoly on the spice trade. Empires grew rich providing spices desperately needed to flavor and preserve food, embalm the dead, and make perfumes. Wealthy ladies wore lockets filled with spices so they could sweeten their breath. Europe was on the very end of the spice trail and paying exorbitant prices. At one point, a pound of nutmeg was more valuable than a pound of gold.

Christopher Columbus persuaded Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain that he could sail west across the ocean and find a new route to the East, a gateway to India and China where spices and gold could be found. On Aug. 3, 1492, he set sail from Spain with his three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

The first land Columbus sighted, on Oct. 12, 1492, turned out to be an island in the present-day Bahamas. He named it San Salvador. When he discovered no riches, he sailed on in hopes of finding spices. On Oct. 28, he landed on the shores of Cuba. Upon Columbus' final return to Spain, he presented gold and two new spices, chili pepper and allspice, to the king and queen. Columbus’ voyage opened the New World to Europeans, and Monday, October 8th is celebrated in his honor.

Inside the Battle to Ban

The U.S. federal government has threatened to ban the social media app, which is used by roughly 100 million Americans. Meanwhile, Montana has already passed a ban that is slated to go into effect in January 2024. Government officials allege that TikTok enables the misuse and abuse of the data of American citizens.

In Montana, the efforts to ban TikTok are being spearheaded by state Attorney General Austin Knudsen, who has argued that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is able to access and utilize the data of American citizens. ByteDance, which owns TikTok, has repeatedly claimed that the CCP cannot access their data and that if the party requested access, the company would decline.

However, several former ByteDance executives allege in their termination lawsuit that the CCP has supreme access to all TikTok’s data, including that of American citizens. The suit claims that the CCP has guided ByteDance to promote divisive, communist values and that the company has elevated and removed certain content at the CCP’s discretion.

Back in February, it wasn't certain there was enough support in the Montana legislature to ban the app, but the CCP sent Knudsen a high-flying gift: A Chinese weather balloon, which many believe harbored spy equipment, appeared in the skies over Montana. TikTok isn't taking the Montana ban lying down and has launched a lawsuit against the Montana state government. It's also worth noting that the version of TikTok available in the U.S. is not allowed to be viewed in China. They use a totally different app.

October is Fire Prevention Month

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were a staggering 355,400 home fires reported in the U.S. last year. Among these fires, about 31 percent were attributed to cooking mishaps. The primary cause? Unattended cooking.

A momentary distraction or leaving cooking equipment unsupervised can lead to devastating fires in a matter of minutes. Grease fires, caused by overheating oil or fats, can escalate rapidly and pose an immediate danger if not handled correctly.

Here are a few tips to prevent house fires: Never leave cooking unattended, especially when using stovetops, ovens, or fryers. If you need to leave the kitchen, turn off the heat. Clear clutter like kitchen towels, paper towels and curtains away from open flames or heating elements.

Be cautious when cooking with oil. If a grease fire starts, do not use water; smother it with a lid or fire blanket. Set timers when baking, roasting, or simmering, so you're alerted when food is ready. Educate kids about the hazards of the kitchen and establish a safe distance while cooking.

Keep pets out of the kitchen. If you have a gas range, install locks for the knobs so that a jumping dog or curious child can't inadvertently turn on a burner. Maintain functional smoke alarms in the kitchen and throughout the home. And lastly, keep a fire extinguisher within reach and learn how to use it properly. The NFPA recommends at least one on every level of the home.

The Cold Case of the Tollund Man

On May 8, 1950, police in the Danish town of Silkeborg received a message: A body had been found under peat in a nearby bog with a rope around the neck, the flesh still smooth and intact. Two brothers had discovered it while digging peat to use as fuel.

When the brothers shared the location of the body — more than 60 meters away from solid ground, under two meters of undisturbed peat -- investigators realized that it might be an issue for archaeologists and called the Silkeborg Museum. When museum staff arrived, they knew that this was much more than a simple cold case -the body was perhaps thousands of years old, but so wellpreserved that he appeared recently dead.

Tests revealed that the corpse, now known as the Tollund Man, died around 400 B.C. Though he was far from the first ancient body recovered from a peat bog, he remains among the most famous for his remarkably well-preserved remains. Over decades of examination, researchers concluded that he died by hanging after a last meal of porridge and fish. After death, his body was carefully arranged in a sleeping position in the peat, which archaeologists interpret as evidence of human sacrifice instead of an execution or crime. After thousands of years in the peat, he still wore his wool cap.

The Tollund Man is old, but still just a youngster compared to the oldest bog body discovered so far. The Koelbjerg Man, found in the same bog as the Tollund Man, lived in Denmark about 8,000 years ago and is also thought to have been sacrificed.

Pliny the Younger wrote what was the first recorded ghost story 2,000 years ago, describing a specter haunting a house in Athens. Then, as now, if you see a ghost, or a vampire, or a zombie, and if no one else does, you might be considered special, shall we say.

But what if your family, friends, and neighbors believe the story? Well, now you have a truly scary situation because the stuff is considered the truth. So, scientists are digging up, literally, all sorts of evidence to study previous scary beliefs.

In 2015, archaeologists in Poland discovered graves of people buried 500 years ago in the fashion of vampires. Two women in their 30s, a man about 40, and a girl were buried with sickles pinning them into their graves. In the same cemetery, a child was found buried face down with a shackle on his leg. These techniques were part of the vampire lore of the time, intended to keep the undead from rising. The older woman had distinctive protruding canine teeth, which might have contributed to her scary reputation.

All of that contributes to the chilling reality that a vampire story can be fun or eerie but believing it can be dangerous for the people targeted. Luckily, only 13 percent of people polled in 2022 by YouGov said they believed in vampires. But 46 percent said they believed in ghosts, and the same number said they believed in demons.

Buying and selling a home is stressful. Showings. Listings. Open Houses. Taxes. Closing Costs. Paperwork on top of paperwork on top of paperwork. While it's easy to think you can handle it all yourself, the fact is that a real estate transaction is time-consuming and complicated, and if not handled properly, could end up costing you money.

Realtors also know how to make your home shine. From planning the perfect open house, to staging your home for showings, to photographing your property in the best possible light for listings.

Realtors are tough negotiators. It's all about that final price. Realtors aren't emotionally invested in your property. And that's a good thing because, more than likely, you are. Your home holds memories and letting go can be a heartwrenching process. Human beings simply don't make the best decisions when they are emotional. But a Realtor can be a common-sense constant who negotiates with their head instead of the heart.

Realtors will also keep you on the right side of the law. As a seller, do you have to tell a potential buyer you had a water leak that was never repaired? Any roof issues you think are not a problem? Dozens of questions come up that you simply won't know the answer to. Realtors keep up with the ever-changing rules and regulations that govern the sale of a property, so you don't have to.

For answers to any of your real-estate questions, contact Sheryl at 561-389-8670.

Blended-Wing Aircraft Set to Takeoff

For many decades now, most aircraft have used the same general design: two wings connected to a central fuselage (or main body of the aircraft). Yet aerospace engineers are working on new frames that will blend the wings and fuselage together.

Rather than using 3 parts, blended-wing aircraft do away with the hard dividing lines. Experts believe that blendedwing designs could soon upend the commercial aviation industry by delivering substantial fuel savings while increasing interior space. Some designs allow interior spaces to take up far more of the overall frame, increasing carrying capacities for both cargo and passengers.

With traditional airplanes, the wings generate most of the lift to fly. With blended-wing airplanes, the entire airframe will produce lift while simultaneously reducing drag. These changes should increase fuel economy and also cut down on emissions. NASA and Airbus have both stated that blended-wing aircraft could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 30 percent.

You may have already spotted a blended-wing aircraft. The famous Mach 3+ Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, which ranks among the fastest aircraft in the world, uses a blendedwing design. Other military aircraft also use blended-wing designs, but for now, the technology is still being tested for commercial use.

National Boss’s Day—Oct 16th

“People don’t leave bad companies; they leave bad managers.”

My Dad was a great boss: Fair to his employees, motivated to succeed, and most of all, loyal to his clients. While Dad is no longer around, I fondly remember him as a businessman. So, I am celebrating National Boss’s Day (established 1958) on Monday Oct 16th.

The U.S. has over 10 million managers. About thirty percent are female. CEO’s average $150,000 as annual income. But according to a previous Yahoo survey, 43% don’t like their boss’s supervisory styles. So, while boss is not fully recognized by everyone, it’s a good day to acknowledge your employer. A raise or more benefits may come about: one never knows.

What can an employee do? Presenting a gift is not necessary, but a card can go a long way. Wit and humor may help the cause. Just the verbal recognition of the day accomplishes the objective. After all, cozying up to the decision maker can have a powerful impact on your career. And to the bosses, just reminding your people about how important and appreciated they are works wonders, too. Boss and employee need to create an environment of teamwork in the workplace. And while some people have a hard time accepting Boss’s Day, remember, bosses are people too. They have great responsibilities and make mistakes too. So, show them the respect as if they were Mafioso Boss, Don Vito Corleone.

Halloween Horror Creeping

Halloween is creeping around the corner. Here in Florida, the big thing to do around Halloween time is to visit Universal Studios in Orlando for Halloween Horror Nights. The event runs from 6:30pm to 2:00am in the Universal Parks until November 4. There are themed haunted houses and mazes that change every year. This year, there are a total of 10 houses with themes as follows: Stranger Things, The Exorcist, The Last of Us, Chucky Ultimate Kill Count, Universal Monsters Unmasked, Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins, Dueling Dragons, Yeti Campground Kills, The Darkest Deal, and Bloodmoon Dark Offerings. Along with the actors in the haunted houses themselves, there are scary actors that walk around the entirety of the park to scare you.

Along with the haunting experience of this event, there is also amazing Halloween themed food. For example, the Hellfire Mini Cake, inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons club featured in the popular Netflix show Stranger Things.

Also, with the Halloween attractions, some of the more popular Universal rides are open. This is often a great time to enjoy the rides because the wait times are typically lower than they usually are during the day. It really is a terrific Halloween experience!

Law Ensures Kid Influencers Get Paid

Child labor makes people squeamish. Yet tune into a movie or your favorite TV shows and there's a fair chance that a child actor will grace the screen. Increasingly, you'll find a growing number of kid influencers on TikTok and other social media apps as well.

At the end of the day, child actors are working professionals and part and parcel of the entertainment industry. How they get paid can be a bit of a legal and moral quagmire, but at least in Illinois, the picture is now perfectly clear.

Some child influencers have racked up millions of views and followers. The top earners are likely pulling in millions of dollars each year. Yet right now, parents are the ones cashing those checks, and by and large, they can do what they please with the money. As a result, some kids are generating millions -- but might be keeping none of it. Now, Illinois state lawmakers have amended the state's Child Labor Law to ensure that social media personalities under the age of 16 receive a portion of the money generated by their content.

Illinois's law is based on the so-called Coogan Law in California, which requires that at least 50 percent of a child actor's earnings be set aside in a trust or similar instrument until the minor turns 18, when they can take control of the funds. Illinois's law also now requires that at least half of a child’s earnings be set aside, and if parents fail to do so, they could face a lawsuit for money owed to them. The Illinois law is the first of its kind. While California may have led the charge with child actors, it has yet to pass any laws to protect child influencers on social media.

The movement to get such a law in place was championed by 16-year-old high school student Shreya Nallamothu, who discovered during a research project that many child influencers were being exploited by their parents. Nallamothu began making presentations to Illinois state lawmakers, paving the way for the new state law to be passed. .

The Science Behind the Power of Sleep

In the bustle of modern life, sleep often takes a back seat to the demands of work and family. However, a growing body of scientific research underscores the importance of getting enough sleep. Research reveals that sleep is more than just a passive state of rest; it's a complex process that rejuvenates the body and mind. Adequate sleep is essential for optimal cognitive function, memory consolidation, and emotional well-being.

Cognitive sharpness: A study published in the journal Sleep found that individuals who consistently slept between seven and nine hours displayed better cognitive performance, including improved attention, problemsolving, and decision-making skills.

Heart health: Research in the European Heart Journal discovered a clear link between lack of sleep and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Regular highquality sleep contributes to healthier blood pressure and overall heart health.

Mental health: A comprehensive study published in JAMA Psychiatry highlighted the complex relationship between sleep and mental health. Individuals who get sufficient sleep are less likely to suffer from mood disorders, depression, and anxiety.

Physical recovery: The Journal of Applied Physiology reported that sleep plays a pivotal role in muscle recovery and growth. During deep sleep stages, the body releases growth hormone that aids in cellular repair and overall physical revitalization.

Beware of Decorative Contacts

Every October, millions of people get dressed up for Halloween. Along with makeup and costumes, some people get fun or scary contact lenses. These contacts were once only available by custom makers who supplied them to the horror movie industry. But now they are cheap and commonly found at numerous online suppliers from China. Even some beauty salons sell them.

The majority of these contacts ordered online are not approved by the FDA. These contacts may or may not fit. May or not be comfortable. And may or may not create irritation and blood shot eyes. Most doctor offices do not sell them but can perform the eye exams for them.

We in the eye care industry frown about putting any contact lens in the eye unless the health and proper fit is determined by an eye doctor. Every year, there are thousands of cases of corneal abrasions, eye infections (pink eye), and sometimes even partial vision loss that are associated with these types of potentially harmful contacts.

Since decorative contacts can sometimes cause serious eye damage, not to mention that it’s illegal to purchase any type of contacts without a prescription, please proceed with caution. If you do decide to buy them, please wear them for just a few hours and then discard them.

Challenges Faced by Elder Orphans

Imagine yourself at age 70, retired or about to retire. Likely, your parents are deceased. Your siblings may be, too. You might be in a happy marriage. Or not. Your BFF may still be around. But maybe not. The fact is, those who live the longest often find themselves without living family, and largely without any close ties. You know you have arrived in that moment when you can't think of anyone to put down on a form as an emergency contact.

These people are often called 'elder orphans.' They have unique challenges, according to Caring Places. Any challenges of mobility (or mental capacity) make it difficult to stay in their home alone. Even temporary conditions are a problem. If an elder orphan needs a hip replacement, there is nowhere to recover except at a nursing home. Meanwhile, they increasingly need help with financial and legal matters. They may find themselves targeted by estate or conservatorship fraud with no family to defend or advise.

One solution is to make a living will so that your end-of-life choices are set. Choose a health care proxy -- even an attorney or friend might do. It’s important to keep in touch with people you know. You may have a network of friends from clubs, church, or work with whom you can call upon.

Also, consider senior communities. Larger senior communities may offer both health and home services, as well as entertainment and community. Even if you don't have a lot of money, sometimes government-sponsored senior housing communities may offer affordable social contact and security.

A Really Close Call…

An eighty-year-old man drove his brand-new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little gray hair he had left. Amazing, he thought to himself as he flew down the highway, pushing the pedal even more.

Looking in his rear-view mirror, he saw a state trooper flying up behind him, lights flashing and siren blaring.

The man floored it to 100mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, I’m too old for this—what am I doing? The man slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road to await the trooper’s arrival.

Pulling in behind him, the trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked down at his watch, and said, “Sir, I’m in a good mood today. My shift ends in 30 minutes and I’m heading out of town for the long weekend. If you can give me a good reason for speeding like that, a reason that I’ve never heard before, I’ll let you off with a warning.”

The old gentleman paused and took a deep breath. Then he said, “A few years ago, my wife ran off with a state trooper. Well, I thought you were bringing her back.”

“Have a good day, sir,” replied the trooper.

It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere…

Singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett was born on December 25, 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi, majoring in journalism. He moved to Nashville in the late sixties, intent on becoming a country singer. In 1972, Buffett left Nashville and moved to Key West.

In 1975, Buffett formed a band, The Coral Reefers, and went on to release a string of hit albums, including Changes in Attitudes, Changes in Latitudes, released in 1977, that would make Buffett an international pop-music icon. The album debuted "Margaritaville," written in Key West, which quickly climbed the charts.

By the mid-90s, Buffett had established his Margaritaville empire, including his record label and a string of Margaritaville Store and Cafe outlets. He also wrote two best-selling books, Tales from Margaritaville, a collection of short stories, and the novel, Where Is Joe Merchant?

Buffett earned a reputation as a conservationist, cofounding the Save the Manatee Club in 1981, and supported many other environmental charities. Buffett died at the age of 76 last month at his home in Sag Harbor, New York, after a four-year battle with Merkel-cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer. His final studio album, Equal Strain on all Parts, is scheduled for release on November 3, 2023.

Is Quantum Apocalypse Coming?

Scientists at Google, IBM, and Microsoft are working on quantum computers, aiming to harness quantum mechanics to revolutionize computer processors. Google claims that its current quantum prototypes are over 100 million times faster than traditional computers. Given the potential, companies and governments are watching closely. And so are cybercriminals.

In fact, Google and other thought leaders warn of an impending quantum apocalypse, a scenario in which our cybersecurity technologies will become obsolete. Quantum computers might allow scientists to work at the nano and atomic scales and turbocharge artificial intelligence. However, these computers will also likely render our current encryption protocols useless, potentially exposing vast quantities of data to cybercriminals.

Much of the sensitive data stored today is encrypted —you can't read the data unless you decrypt it. Most encryption methods use cryptographic algorithms to obfuscate the data. If you can solve the cryptographic algorithms, you'll be able to decrypt all the data. There's just one challenge: With current computers, it would take billions of years to solve the algorithms.

But with quantum computers, cryptographic algorithms could be broken in minutes. Cybercriminal groups have been hoarding encrypted data, a practice called "steal now, crack later," waiting for quantum computers to progress. Quite simply, if they get their hands on a quantum computer, they might be able to quickly decrypt all their stored data, including corporate and military secrets.
