Does Sun Protective Clothing Work?

If you are an avid beach goer, or a person who enjoys the great outdoors, you have likely complained about having to lather on sunscreen all the time. Let’s be honest, with the recommendation to reapply every two hours…who can keep up?! UPF clothing can be a great addition to your arsenal while combating sun exposure. And while it’s recommended to use UPF clothing in addition to sunblock, wearing it will certainly help reduce the number of times you have to reapply.

UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor. While all clothing provides some protection from the sun's harmful rays, UPF clothing is made from a special fabric with a tighter weave, which helps block UV rays from penetrating through microholes in the fabric. UPF clothing has a rating that indicates how much UV radiation the fabric blocks. UPF ratings typically range between 15 to 50 UPF. The biggest downside to UPF clothing is the expense. The fabrics are expensive and that makes the cost expensive too. There are a lot of companies that claim their clothing protects you from the sun, but the Skin Cancer Foundation only awards its stamp of approval to clothing with a UPF rating of 30 or higher.

Remember, UPF clothing alone isn’t enough to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. So, when packing your beach bag, be sure to pack your UPF clothing and hat, sunblock, and umbrella! And, regardless of how great you are with sun protection, you will still benefit from an annual skin check with your dermatologist!

November—National Diabetes Month It's easy to think that diabetes can happen to other people or only older folks -- but never to you. That's what many of the millions of people living with diabetes thought. And it's what the tens of millions of people with (often undiagnosed) prediabetes think now.

About 40 percent of Americans age 40 and older have elevated blood sugar levels. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases predicts that the U.S. is facing a diabetes epidemic. The most common form is type 2 diabetes. It develops when the body doesn't produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels normal, or when the body is unable to properly use the insulin it does produce -- a condition called insulin resistance.

People who are over 45, overweight, and have a family history of diabetes are at greatest risk. African-Americans, Latinos and Native Americans are more prone to the disease.

Millions of people with prediabetes have metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity, low HDL (good) cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood pressure -- a combination that elevates their risk for both diabetes and heart disease.

According to the Diabetes Prevention Program, they can reduce their risk of developing full-blown diabetes by 58 percent just by losing 5 to 10 percent of their body weight and getting 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day. Just working toward those goals can help. Type 2 used to be called adultonset diabetes, but kids as young as five are being diagnosed now, according to the International Diabetes Center.

The Tasty History of the Big Mac McDonald's sells more than half a billion Big Macs every year.

It's got a tasty history as well. Along with the special sauce, you can add a dash of rebellion. Back in 1957, franchisee Jim Delligatti opened his first McDonald's restaurant in blue-collar Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Steelworkers made up much of the local customer base, and McDonald's basic burgers weren't always filling enough to sustain them through their shifts.

Local diners had an edge on McDonald's, offering heartier meals, including "whopping sandwiches." Delligatti pulled from their playbook and dreamed up a towering doubledecker burger. There was just one problem: The corporate bigwigs wanted nothing to do with it and forbid Delligatti from serving larger sandwiches.

But Delligatti persisted, and in 1967, McDonald's finally gave him the green light to craft a new sandwich. They insisted on one caveat, however: only ingredients already in use at McDonald's could be used. Delligatti ignored them and began purchasing the Big Mac-defining sesame buns from a local bakery. He cooked up the famous special sauce and began selling his sandwiches for 45 cents apiece.

Initially, the sandwich was served at only a few locations and was called the Blue Ribbon Burger. The sandwich was a smashing success and McDonald's promptly pivoted, embracing the new burger and rolled it out nationwide within a year. The exact recipe of the classic orange special sauce, made primarily with mayonnaise, yellow mustard, and sweet pickle relish, remains a McDonald's trade secret.

Cable TV—Is the End Near?

A recent spat between Disney and Charter Communications, the second-largest U.S. cable provider, illustrates just how divergent the interests of content programmers and distributors are. Some analysts believe that the very foundations of the $200 billion TV industry may soon collapse amid clashing interests.

Until recently, Charter paid Disney billions for the right to serve the Mouse's channels via cable TV. Charter argued that since their subscribers were already paying for Disney content as part of their cable packages, they should get access to apps, including Disney+ and ESPN+, at no extra cost. Disney balked and negotiations broke down. After Charter refused to pay Disney's $2.2 billion carriage fee, millions of Charter's cable subscribers lost access to Disney-owned outlets.

Many content programmers have launched streaming apps to distribute their own content. Yet these apps so far have been bleeding cash and subscribers. Disney's streaming operations lost $512 million during the third quarter and Warner Bros reportedly lost two million cable subscribers in the second quarter compared to the first quarter.

Carriage fees from cable networks have been one of the healthiest revenue streams for Disney and other programmers, but distributors have argued that these fees subsidize programmers' efforts to build the very streaming platforms that are now an existential threat to cable. Given the fundamentally opposed interests of distributors and programmers, it's fair to wonder if cable television could go the way of the dinosaurs.

College Coaches Making Bank In 1993, college coaches earned an average salary of $132,800. In 2023, the lowest-paid Big Ten coach reeled in $4 million, while the highest-paid topped $9 million. Coaches in the other conferences similarly pull in about the same.

As coaching salaries have exploded, one coach's contract stands out. Head coach Jimbo Fisher, who guided Florida State to a national football title back in 2013. Yet Fisher, now at Texas A&M, is drawing a lot of heat with a record that many feel doesn't measure up to his gargantuan contract. In 2017, Fisher signed a 10-year $75 million 10-year contract, then the richest such deal ever inked. In 2021, the contract was renegotiated to $95 million over ten years.

Fisher has assembled a respectable record, guiding the Aggies to a 44-22 record (as of last year.) But the Aggies brought Fisher in with national championship aspirations, that many fans now question. But hot seat or not, Fisher might be unfireable due to the massive contract buyout cost.

When most coaches are relieved of duty partway through their contract, the buyout amounts to a portion of their contract's remaining value. Consider Alabama coach Nick Saban, one of the greatest coaches of all time with seven national championships. He earns roughly $11.7 million per year and his contract runs through 2030. However, his buyout amounts to about $43 million -- just half of the remaining value of his contract. But Texas A&M fully guaranteed Fisher's contract, which leaves them on the hook for roughly $75 million if they let him go.

Make a Wish: Story of the Wishbone Only two kids even get to take a crack at it, and a winning side promises serious good luck and a wish granted. It's the wishbone, more formally known as the furcula -- the point where turkey, duck, or chicken clavicles fuse above the sternum.

Ancient Etruscans prized the furcula and removed it whenever they slaughtered chickens. After thoroughly drying it out in the sun, the holder would stroke it while making a wish -- thus the name "wishbone."

The wishbone tradition carried over to the Romans, who eventually passed it to the British. The tradition jumped the Atlantic with the Pilgrims, who were chronically low on good luck after their arrival at Plymouth Rock. Luck may have been in short supply, but wild turkeys weren't, and their wishbones became a popular good luck charm.

For modern American celebrations, here's how it usually goes: After you salvage the wishbone from the turkey, let it dry for a couple of days and become brittle. When the wishbone is ready, each person hooks a pinky finger around one side of the bone and pulls until the wishbone breaks, leaving just one lucky person with the bigger piece—and a secret wish granted.

President Thomas Jefferson was deeply curious about the peoples who lived in the West of the unexplored American continent. Rumor was all he had to go on, since only a few white fur traders had ever ventured into the unknown.

According to historian Stephen Ambrose in his book Undaunted Courage, Jefferson speculated that the native American peoples were "wandering Welshmen" or even the lost tribes of Israel. Explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, whom Jefferson commissioned to cross newly acquired western territory after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, met with people who were much more interesting than that.

In the fall of 1804, Lewis and Clark met a Sioux clan in the upper Missouri. The 900-person nomadic group lived in 100 tipi tents and relied on a horse and buffalo economy. Lewis and Clark were invited to a Sioux council. With much ceremony, they were carried on a decorated buffalo robe to a huge council tipi. Keep Minor Injuries from Turning Major

Minor cuts and scrapes aren't the stuff of medical dramas. But if not treated correctly, they could be. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery reports that they get more inquiries about "minor" injuries than about anything else. That's probably because today's infections can be a lot more serious than ever before.

Bacterial skin infections that are highly resistant to antibiotics can spread to other parts of the body. Staph infections used to be found mainly in hospitals, but newer strains have become much more common.

They are hard to treat, but not usually life-threatening.

Doctors at the Infectious Diseases Society of America say they are only fatal in rare cases. That's one reason why any injury that breaks the skin should be properly treated.

Make sure the injury is minor. If a cut is gaping open and bleeding heavily, you need medical attention, but not necessarily stitches. Many doctors now use medical glue to close wounds. There's no pain involved, and the wounds heal just as well.

If the wound is minor, follow these recommendations: • Stop bleeding with pressure using a clean cloth or sterile pad. Avoid the use of paper towels and dish towels.

• Clean the wound with running water. Use soap if the wound is dirty. Don't use lake or pond water.

• Cover the wound so it's not exposed to the air. Dry wounds don't heal as well as moist wounds.

•To add moisture, apply a triple antibiotic ointment or plain ointment such as Aquaphor.

• Use a sterile bandage and keep the wound out of the sun, which can cause scarring.

• Change the bandage daily and check for infection. If the wound is getting worse instead of better, see your doctor.

You have a big decision to make, and you have to make it right now.

Your stomach is in knots and you feel nauseous. But is your gut telling you something?

Your brain is scanning your environment and analyzing thoughts faster than your awareness, and that information might be going right to your gut. The key may be listening to your gut, or intuition, and learning over time what signals your body is sending you.

The first thing to ask yourself is whether you are feeling fearful.

Fear pushes you to avoid threats or punishment. Fear may be the impulse to flee or escape. Fear can also distort the messages of the environment. If you aren't fearful, are you feeling pulled toward something, even if it is a risk? Do you feel excitement or anticipation? Or maybe you feel comfortable and at ease.

Stay aware of your physical gut reactions at important moments.

You might be able to see how these hints can help you make decisions (or hold off making decisions) over time.

In 1980, 47 percent of Americans claimed they exercised regularly. By 2000, that figure had grown to 57 percent.

Yet the number of overweight and obese people rose dramatically. Physical activity is essential for good health, but it may not melt the pounds away on its own. Exercise researchers at Louisiana State University say when it comes to losing weight, how much you eat is far more important than how much you exercise.

Building muscle makes you stronger, but a pound of muscle burns only four calories more per day than a pound of fat. If you somehow gained 10 pounds of muscle, you would only be able to eat an extra 40 calories a day. Vigorous exercise can also stimulate hunger and could lead to a self-reward system. If you burn 300 calories at an exercise machine and reward yourself with donuts on the way home, you can easily consume more than you just burned.

Many researchers believe that frequent lower-level activity works better for weight loss than bouts of vigorous exercise.

They say it's better to be active in your life and throughout the day. Take a walk -- it doesn't have to be a fast one. Climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Dance to music, hit a golf ball, do the laundry, or play with the dog.

People only have a certain amount of energy to expend in a given day. For weight loss, it's better to be active every day instead of doing vigorous workouts only a couple of times a week. At the end of the day, it's better to focus on how many calories you take in -- not the calories you burn off.

Driving Brings Feeling of Freedom

Last month on October 5th, I finally got my driver’s license. It’s something I’ve been dreaming about and waiting for since I was much younger. As a teenager, driving not only comes with responsibility, but it comes with independence and freedom. Not having to rely on your parents to drive you around all the time is such a relief, and being able to make plans with friends is a million times easier and far less complicated.

Typically, parents like to share the driving duties with other parents because they sometimes get sick of driving their children around. Since I’ve gotten my license, I have felt a wave of independence and productivity. I feel like driving makes me more of an adult.

Most parents are worried when their child first begins to drive on their own, because, quite honestly, it’s scary. There are lots of people on the road that are very reckless when they drive.

I also think that parents really don’t want to see their kids grow up and become less reliant on them. But all in all, I think the freedom and independence that comes with driving is a really big win, but it’s also a big step for parents to feel comfortable with it. .

In a 1960 television series, Daniel Boone was called "the rippin'est, roarin'est, fightin'est man the frontier ever knew." Though many of the stories told about Boone are based on a little truth and a lot of fiction, there are enough known facts to make him a memorable pioneer hero.

The sixth of 11 children, Boone was born in 1734 near the present-day city of Reading, Pa. He is best known for his valuable explorations into Kentucky, opening the Bluegrass State to early settlers.

In 1769, Boone and his followers traversed the Cumberland Gap, a passage through the Cumberland Mountains where the states of Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia come together. He spent two years making a trail for settlers, which led to a clash with the Shawnee, who claimed the area for hunting ground.

In 1775, with a party of settlers in tow, Boone and his men blazed what became Wilderness Road, a combination of existing Native trails and new routes. It reached from Northern Virginia to what is now Louisville, Ky. He founded the frontier outpost of Boonesborough, and when Kentucky became a county of Virginia, he became a major in the militia.

While in Boonesborough, the Shawnee kidnapped his daughter, but Boone was able to rescue her two days later. The Shawnee later captured Boone himself, but they made peace and some sources say he was adopted into their tribe as the honorary son of Chief Blackfish.

Not only was Boone an explorer, but he also served three terms in the Virginia legislature. But 10 years later, the call of unknown territory lured him again. In 1798, as his dugout canoe passed Cincinnati, someone asked why he was leaving Kentucky. "Too crowded," was his answer. He moved on to Missouri where he and his wife, Rebecca lived out the rest of their lives. He died at age 85, three years after his wife's death. Today, they are buried together on a bluff in Kentucky in the beautiful land that he helped to settle.

Yesterday I had a flat tire on the interstate.

So, I eased my car over to the shoulder of the road, carefully got out, and opened the trunk. I took out 2 cardboard men, unfolded them and stood them at the rear of my car facing oncoming traffic. They looked so lifelike you wouldn’t believe! They are in trench coats exposing their nude bodies to the approaching drivers.

To my surprise, cars started slowing down to look at my lifelike men and traffic started backing up. Everybody was tooting their horns and waving like crazy. It wasn’t long before a state trooper pulled up behind me. He started walking towards me, and I could tell he was not a happy camper “What’s going on here?’

“My car has a flat tire,” I said calmly.

“Well, what the heck are those obscene cardboard men doing here by the road?”

I couldn’t believe that he didn’t know. I told him, “Hellooooo, those are my emergency flashers!”

Veteran's Day: Kilroy is Still Here As we celebrate Veteran's Day on November 11, the nation will honor veterans with observances that range from parades to color guards. But one fun memory and tradition from World War II is still remembered even at the most solemn locations, such as the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. It's a classic bit of graffiti: An oval face with a long tubular nose peeping over a wall with the iconic words: Kilroy was here.

Soldiers in World War II often found (and drew) the cartoon at military bases, on ships, and even on battlefields.

It was a touch of rebellion, but it became a source of humor and comfort. Kilroy was literally everywhere.

The question of who started Kilroy has spawned many legends. The one generally accepted is that an American shipyard inspector, James J. Kilroy, drew the cartoon on ships as a way to show that he had inspected rivets. Kilroy put the cartoon inside hull spaces that were subsequently sealed, and when others found the cartoon later, it seemed almost magical as to how they got there.

The mark became such a symbol of the war that you can still see it today, memorialized in Washington D.C. at the World War II memorial. If you ever visit, you'll find it etched near the ground near the Pennsylvania and Delaware pillars.

The Coming Banana Pandemic

The Cavendish banana is the most common banana grown and part of a $40 billion global industry. Until the 1950s, the dominant banana was another variety: Gros Michel, a hardy fruit that shipped well and grew easily. But Gros Michel had an enemy -- a soil-born fungus called Race 1. About a hundred years ago, Race 1 nearly destroyed the banana industry.

According to Emily Monosson in her book Blight Fungi and the Coming Pandemic, the fungus killed all the Gros Michel plants, setting growers to find a replacement banana.

The banana they found was the Cavendish. The Race 1 fungus didn't like the Cavendish, which was close to Gros Michel in terms of flavor and appearance, but it had a drawback. The Cavendish is delicate compared to the Gros Michel and expensive to export. But with the looming demise of the commercial banana, the industry changed to accommodate Cavendish, carefully protecting the fruit and shipping it in boxes.

But another fungus has now arrived: Tropical Race-4 (TR4), which threatens to wipe out the Cavendish plant, along with the economies of multiple Latin American countries. TR4 is nearly impossible to eliminate. It spreads rapidly, it’s resistant to chemical fungicides, and can survive in the soil for more than 20 years.

Large growers with high-tech processes in place (like the sterilization of boots) have been able to control the fungus. But it's bad news for smaller growers whose farms will be decimated.

The solution may come in the form of genetic modification or microorganisms that help bananas fight the fungus.
