BOOK CLUB KIT
Explore themes of conservation, restoration and respect, inspired by Ken Burns’ The American Bu alo.
BOOK
Great Plains Bison by Dan O’Brien
FILM
Seed Warriors by Rebekka Schlichting (Ioway Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska)
Message to Our Members
October is an exciting month for local and national programs, but it is also an exciting month for screenings, panel discussions and new community partnerships. You may not know our engagement with Nebraskans o en goes beyond the broadcast, and Ken Burns’ new documentary, The American Bu alo, is a great example. For the first time, we are o ering local Book Club Kits to accompany a national film.
Like The American Bu alo, our kits explore themes of conservation, restoration and respect.
“We hope the kit will spark great conversations about lessons we can learn from history and apply across Nebraska today. We are also thrilled it will help strengthen our strong relationship with public libraries across the state and our community partners,” said Maggie Berndt, community engagement manager for Nebraska Public Media.
Partners include the Center for Great Plains Studies, Vision Maker Media, University of Nebraska Press & Bison Books, Nebraska Library Commission and the state’s four regional library systems.
Each kit contains ten copies of the book, Great Plains Bison by Dan O’Brien, along with information
2
Return of the American Bison by Nebraska Public Media
about accessing a discussion guide and two related short films, Seed Warriors by Rebekka Schlichting and Return of the American Bison by Nebraska Public Media.
Seed Warriors follows Pawnee seed keepers as they work with Nebraska farmers to preserve the tribe’s sacred, ancestral corn. Return of the American Bison explains how the bison population in the Great Plains went from fewer than 1,000 to more than 500,000 because of conservation e orts. Like The American Bu alo, it features interviews with historian Dan Flores.
The Nebraska Library Commission and the state’s four regional library systems will distribute our book club
kits and any local public library in the state can check out a kit through these organizations. Lincoln City Libraries, the Bellevue Public Library and the Kearney Public Library will have kits for individual patrons to borrow.
ANYONE can access the discussion guide, watch the short films and find related resources at NebraskaPublicMedia.org/bookclub.
Thank you for supporting our network and new endeavors like this one!

VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS IN CRISIS
When emergencies threaten and alarms sound, volunteer firefighters and medical teams stand by, ready and willing to protect Nebraskans and communities like Madison, Gering, Mullen, Merriman and Bristow.
Flames, smoke and the risk of injury aren’t the only dangers facing these local first responders. Recruiting and retaining volunteers, aging equipment, tight budgets and the shocking increase in extreme weather create a crisis – fewer responders and increasing demand.
In more than 450 Nebraska communities, volunteers answer calls for help – but now the system is sounding alarms. What happens if people stop volunteering for your local volunteer fire department?

Television Crew Feels the Heat
As the Gering Volunteer Fire Department ignited debris piled in a metal shipping container and Nebraska Public Media prepared to record their training exercise, Chief Nathan Flowers asked if our television crew wanted to be closer to the action.
“He asked us if we wanted to go inside and we both said yes!” explained videographer Ti any Johanson, who is also editing the documentary.
Under the watchful eye of Flowers, Johanson and audio engineer Ryan Messman suited up in gear to protect them from the 700-degree temperatures inside the container.
“The Gering volunteers explained how hot it would be and all the things we needed to think about. It was very well structured and organized,” said Johanson. “The female firefighters made sure I had gear that fit properly.”
She took in a small GoPro camera, but Messman had to leave his audio equipment outside, as it wouldn’t withstand the heat.
“It was a chance to experience what they experience,” said Johanson. “I enjoy telling people’s stories and representing them in the best ways I can.”

RADIO HOST
DELIVERS MIX OF LOCAL, NATIONAL STORIES
WEEKDAYS
4 – 9 a.m. CT
Fresh out of high school, Dale Johnson sat down behind a microphone at KUVR radio in Holdrege and the rest, as they say, is history. “I’ve never done anything else,” said Johnson, who took over as the local host of Morning Edition in March.
He’s worked in Kearney, Grand Island and Omaha, where he learned radio news from icons like Lyle Bremser, Kent Pavelka and Walt Cavanaugh. “I kept my mouth shut and my ears open.”
Johnson’s voice is familiar to many – he was on the air at KFOR in Lincoln for nearly 40 years. Now, the radio veteran is finding a new voice on public radio. “It’s such a breath of fresh air!”
Right away, Johnson clicked with Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep’s on-air delivery, so he listened to more of the longtime anchor’s work. “He’s a master at asking questions and his interviews sound like conversations. His so er tone is very natural and I think it matches public media’s culture.”
Johnson also appreciates the work of NPR reporters. “The pieces are structured so well and told by people on the ground. Not a morning goes by that there aren’t multiple stories that make you emotional.”
He’s in the studio early each morning, but says the time flies. “Every time I turn on the mic, I want to be the best I can be.”

Audrey Kauders compares public media to a library, and watching our television programs with PBS Passport to reading books. “You can back up and pick up from the beginning of a series. When you read a book, you wouldn’t want to start on chapter 10!”
Kauders recently watched every episode of Masterpiece’s Endeavor and Inspector Lewis from beginning to end. Now, she’s anxiously awaiting the new seasons of Miss Scarlet and The Duke and All Creatures Great and Small.
A Nebraskan by choice, she and her two children moved to Omaha in 1979 a er her first husband died. Armed with a college background in dance, experience as a studio owner and a burgeoning career in art museums, Kauders began work at the Joslyn Art Museum.
During her morning routine and commutes downtown, Audrey discovered public radio. “I’d listen to Morning Edition on the way to work and All Things Considered on the way home,” she said.
While serving on the board for the Omaha Ballet, she met her second husband Richard Kauders. “Ballet brought us together.”

Gives Donor Peace of Mind
A er Richard retired, Audrey became the interim director at the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney. The couple traveled back and forth from Omaha initially, but moved to Central Nebraska in 2002, when her position became full time. “Public radio was a big part of our time in the car.”
The two began supporting the network around the same time. “My interest in public broadcasting is an extension of my interest in culture and the arts,” she explained.
When Richard died unexpectedly in Nov. 2021, Audrey navigated their finances, a process she found daunting. “We did have a will, but I didn’t know all of the details. Now I always recommend that people look ahead and work with a professional to prepare in a calm, thoughtful manner,” she explained. “It gives you peace of mind.”
A er taking a break from radio news, Audrey is enjoying classical music and Saturday morning programs like Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me! and Live Wire. “Public radio is there when you want it,” she said. “It’s a connector in our state and I think that’s really grand!”

STUDIO MAKES PROGRAMS POSSIBLE
Once called the ‘crown jewel’ of our building, we’ve used the Ron Hull Studio to produce hundreds of local programs such as Backyard Farmer and Big Red Wrap-Up. In the 1970s, it was where we recorded Anyone for Tennyson, the poetry series our network produced for national broadcast on PBS. Candidates vying for election as Nebraska’s senators, governors and representatives debated the issues there, while talented bands stepped on the stage we created to perform on 33rd Street Sessions. During the pandemic, state and local experts spread out in the large space to safely discuss our state’s response during town hall meetings. And, years ago, you might remember the popular fundraising auctions we staged there. Soon, we’ll be recording fresh episodes of our Speaking of Nebraska news series in the Ron Hull Studio – a once state-of-the-art television facility that has e ciently served our network and Nebraska for more than 50 years.
