Message to Our Members

If you live in Custer or Red Willow Counties, or travel through the areas, I hope you’ve noticed how much easier it is to listen to Nebraska Public Media in places like Merna, Sargent and Ansley, and Hayes Center, Palisade and Wuaneta. It’s because we’ve added two new radio transmitters –one near Broken Bow (KGNE 89.3 FM) and another near McCook (KNNE 90.7 FM). The new frequency in McCook replaces the one at 92.7 FM.

As Nebraska’s statewide public media network, we continuously work to improve and expand our coverage. In addition to Broken Bow and McCook, and the new Falls City (KQNE 89.9 FM) radio transmitter we added last May, we are also upgrading equipment in Columbus (KUNE 88.7 FM), with completion scheduled for March. These improvements give more Nebraskans access to news, music and great local programs like Friday LIVE and All About Books. On the back cover of this magazine, you’ll find a list of our radio channels and the communities they serve.

While we focus on promoting our programs, many parts of our service to the state go unnoticed. For example, these improvements to our infrastructure will provide greater access to public safety information, including alerts from the Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service during severe weather.

Nebraska Public Media, like other public media stations around the country, is focused on maximizing coverage areas to help keep the communities we serve safe. In the last fiscal year, we alerted citizens with 178 regional tornado warnings broadcast on our network of FM radio transmitters.

When the Nebraska State Patrol issues emergency messages regarding missing or endangered children, we send statewide Amber Alerts from our network to all other TV and radio stations across the state.

Local public television stations are the backbone of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and reach almost 97 percent of the American public, providing a critical communications capacity to local first responders, particularly in rural areas that are not served by other communication services.

You can read more about how Nebraska Public Media serves the state in times of crisis on pages 14-15. To learn more about our

Nebraskans love the flavor of a juicy steak that’s so tender you can almost cut it with a fork. As your dinner sizzles and spits on the grill, do you ever wonder about the science that makes it the perfect masterpiece on your plate?

Our new local documentary starts with cattle breeding and research, and follows your steak through the feedlot, the meat locker and the menu, exploring flavors, food safety and more. Plus, the owner of a steakhouse explains how preparation and cooking methods affect your steak’s final flavor and texture.

In the season’s first of four new episodes, the spirit of entrepreneurship is sparking an economic recovery in Sidney. Several former employees are looking toward the future, opening doors to new local businesses after Cabela’s headquarters shut theirs in 2017.

In Beaver Crossing, three sisters grew up loving, riding and caring for horses. After a tornado destroyed their farmstead, they rebuilt with a new passion. Weary human and horse travelers can book the bunkhouse (and a stall) at Triple E Equine.

Al Berndt devoted his career to public service. After retiring from the Lincoln Police Department, he served as assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) from 2000-2015, guiding the public response to natural disasters and emergencies.

“During any disaster or emergency situation, good, reliable, truthful information needs to be disseminated to the public,” he said. “Nebraska Public Media is an integral part of the state’s emergency alert system.”

The network’s FM radio station is Nebraska’s primary dissemination point for the Emergency Alert System (EAS), originating both routine tests and actual alerts from NEMA and

NEW TECHNIQUE CHALLENGES STORYTELLERS

The crew producing our local series about entrepreneurs and innovation thinks a lot about pushing the envelope and taking creative risks in their storytelling. Sometimes, it even keeps them up at night. Recently, camera work on the comedy-drama series The Bear inspired them to try a rarely used technique.

“We wanted to tell a one-shot story with no edits,” explained Host/ Producer Mike Tobias. “Typically, a story on What If…Nebraska can have up to 160 different shots, so this was a challenge, but it’s entirely on-brand with the series.”

The team found the perfect opportunity in this season’s story about three sisters and a horse hotel near Beaver Crossing. “It was incredibly complicated to map out how we’d move through all the spaces,” he said.

the Nebraska State Patrol. We also relay information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for nationwide tests and presidential alerts to all Nebraska broadcasters and cable companies.

“You cover the state. You fill a role that basically everybody takes for granted,” said Berndt.

The team blocked every scene like a movie, rehearsed the script and tested each movement and interview position. The day they recorded the episode; Tobias said the nineperson team of audio engineers, videographers and others buzzed with excitement.

“We realized this wasn’t going to be perfect, that stumbles were okay, and they would be part of the beauty of it,” he said. “The talent we have in our building is amazing!”

Two nearly perfect takes later, the crew pulled it off. Looking back, Tobias thinks taking risks makes them better storytellers. “We poured our heart and soul into this. We trusted the process – kind of like entrepreneurs.” Watch a story about this process in the March 26 episode.

Curating the Curious

Have you ever thought about what makes Nebraska… Nebraska?

Curious Nebraska host Andy Hermann is thinking about it for his new monthly radio series. “A lot of things across this country have become homogenous, but you can pick up on regional quirks if you are listening,” he explained.

Hermann is from Ohio and lived in Chicago, so he’s certainly familiar with the Midwest, but he’s been surprised by some subtle differences. Catty-corner or kitty-corner? Interstate or expressway? Scooping snow or shoveling snow? Did you know Nebraska has a wool industry? And red beer? “I want Nebraskans to embrace their uniqueness and know that it’s OK to be different,” said Hermann.

Listen for Curious Nebraska every third Saturday morning of the month during Weekend Edition on Nebraska Public Media.

When their son was in preschool, his parents, Rich and Fran Juro, say he learned to read by watching the Electric Company on PBS. Today, he works as a pediatrician in New Orleans.

Rich and Fran met in New York when Fran was attending summer school at Columbia University.

“She asked me for directions, and I said I am going that way, so I’ll show you,” said Rich. They married in 1964 and moved to Omaha in 1966.

The couple both worked in the family grocery business, Rich as a buyer, and later CEO, and Fran in human resources. Fran’s father, Harold Cooperman, started the No Frills Supermarket chain.

The Juros generously support several community organizations, including Nebraska Public Media, with gifts from a donor advised fund managed by the Omaha Community Foundation.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS OFFER FLEXIBILITY

A donor advised fund (DAF) works like a charitable savings account that’s designed to support organizations with missions that are important to you. These unique accounts are offered by community foundations or financial management companies.

Donor advised funds are growing in popularity because they are flexible and may offer tax advantages. When you deposit money into a qualified DAF, it should be considered a taxdeductible contribution according to IRS regulations.

Once you establish a balance in a DAF, you can easily make recommendations for grants to be given to your favorite charities, based on your timeline.

Groups that manage donor advised funds have different requirements, including minimum deposits, minimum grant amounts, management fees, and options for account growth and beneficiary designation.

The Nebraska Public Media Foundation is a qualified charity eligible to receive grants from donor advised funds.

Check with your financial advisor to see if this tool might be a good fit for your charitable giving and taxreducing goals.

Rich and Fran Juro at the Camel Fair in Mauritania.

“I read about the funds and decided it was a very good option for tax savings. It keeps our giving organized and it’s an easy process,” said Rich.

“We decided to give together,” said Fran, whose parents set an example for giving. “Public television is available to all, and it doesn’t cost anything.”

As they raised their family, Rich listened to NPR’s Morning Edition on the way to work. Fran enjoys Antiques Roadshow and Masterpiece on television and loves to read.

The couple has traveled the United States and the world, visiting nearly 180 countries, including North Korea. They’ve even been to the North Pole on a Russian ice breaker ship.

“We’ve met a lot of interesting people,” said Fran. On one cruise, they ran into documentary filmmaker Ric Burns, the younger brother of Ken Burns.

When they return from their latest voyage, a cruise to Singapore and southeast Asia, Rich says he’ll be looking for more programs that expand his world and help him learn.

“Learning is underrated,” he said.
