Message to Our Members
For seven decades, Nebraska Public Media has steadily served as the cornerstone of our state's rich cultural, educational and civic life.
As we mark this milestone, it’s important to recognize the diverse support that sustains our work, the breadth of services we provide, and how we serve both rural and urban populations in new and innovative ways.
Public media is often associated with federal funding, but Nebraska Public Media is distinct in its ability to garner support from a variety of sources. We are fortunate to have a broad base of federal, state and university support.
At the heart of Nebraska Public Media is our dedicated community of members. Whether it's a donation from a rural town in the Sandhills, or Lincoln or Omaha, contributions from loyal viewers, listeners, members and business partners ensure that we remain a truly independent voice, serving all audiences – and firmly focused on the needs of the public.
Nebraska’s sprawling rural communities and bustling urban centers can present challenges when it comes to delivering consistent and high-quality media services. We are committed to bridging any gaps and serving as a lifeline in times of crisis, like the 2019 flooding and blizzard, or public health emergencies like the pandemic.
We are committed to being a trusted resource for news and information, so that every Nebraskan, no matter where they live, has access to up-to-the-minute information when it matters most.

Increasingly digital-savvy audiences are accessing new technologies, and we are serving them with online streaming, social media engagement and interactive tools. With on-demand access to news, documentaries, educational and cultural programs, we are keeping Nebraskans connected and informed wherever they are.
The road ahead is filled with opportunities, but also challenges. Your support is an investment in the future of our state – arts, education, unbiased journalism and the shared values that make Nebraska such a great place to live.
The future is bright, and with the support of our dedicated community of members, Nebraska Public Media will continue to be an indispensable resource for all Nebraskans.

Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 8

We tested Spanish closed-captioning during last summer’s special session.
Making Capitol Conversations Accessible
Beginning this session, Nebraska Public Media is expanding public access to legislative floor debate and committee hearings by offering closed captioning in Spanish, as well as in English. The addition is a result of Legislative Bill 254.
Powered by artificial intelligence, new technology integrates closed captioning and real-time translation, providing nearly 100 percent accuracy. It transforms a resource-intensive process into an efficient, automated solution to document local government. Mark Weakly, chief engineer for government services, spearheaded the project, completing it well ahead of the legislative deadline.
“The system does a phenomenal job of interpreting speech patterns, including things like accents, hesitations, pacing and variations in how people speak. We’ve trained it to be specific to legislative proceedings with a goal of reaching a wider viewing audience,” said Weakly.

SCHEHERAZADE

Watch on Television Friday, Jan. 24 8 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media
This orchestral work is inspired by the tales of The Arabian Nights in which the Sultan vows to take a new wife each night and have her executed the next morning. However, his bride Scheherazade saves herself by engaging the Sultan’s interest in tales that took 1,001 nights to recount. This recorded program is conducted by Ankush Kumar Bahl with mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor.

Jewish political activist Szmul Zygielbojm died by suicide in London in 1943 to protest against the world's inaction to stop the Holocaust. In this narrative film, his tragic story is the subject of reporting by a young British journalist played by English actor Jack Roth. Like most people, the reporter was unaware of the scale of the crimes against Jews.
Arthur Zygielbaum of Lincoln is Szmul's grandson. He joins Daniel Greene, adjunct professor of history at Northwestern University in Chicago and Nebraska Public Media's Nancy Finken for a conversation after the film.

New Archivist Preserves, Protects Network History
Tucked away in Nebraska Public Media’s building is 70 years of history – thousands of photos, slides, videotape, videodiscs, film, audio recordings and documents.
Organizing, cataloging and preserving our collective past is the mission of Alexis Scargill, who worked as a television news producer in Boston before going to graduate school to become a media archivist.

In 2022, the network received a $1.7 million estate gift from an anonymous donor who was an avid viewer, especially programs about history, local documentaries and the arts. Conversations with the donor and family members led to an agreement to preserve the gift ’s principal amount and use investment earnings to support projects related to history.
“This gift is exceptionally meaningful. We are just understanding the value of our collection and how it can inspire future content for our viewers and listeners,” said Becca Jewell, director of major and planned giving.

Scargill and her team of student workers are deeply involved in the daunting, sometimes dusty task.
“So far, the new archivist has inventoried over 12,000 assets, assigning bar codes and making inventory lists to make tracking and retrieval easier. She also reorganized and cleaned the space to keep assets safe,” said Chief Content Officer Nancy Finken.
Scargill submitted three collections to the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, housed in the Library of Congress. It preserves the most significant public television and radio programs of the past 60 years, making them accessible on-line for research and educational purposes. Additionally, being part of the AAPB provides Nebraska Public Media with access to a cataloging system that will make it easier to search and collate our own collections for use in future productions.

Her next task is cataloguing and creating an inventory of the network’s photos, as well as continuing to work with University of NebraskaLincoln archivists on a collection previously stored at the Nebraska State Historical Society and now at a climate-controlled location at UNL.
“Our goal is to create estate giving opportunities that align with what our donors cherish.”
Becca Jewell
“An archivist’s work is tedious and can be quite messy, as well as extremely interesting. She brings exceptional skills in library science and broadcast news to the job, along with a keen curiosity. The journey of discovery has been wonderful to observe,” said Finken.

The recent archival work is already visible in the new YouTube series Nebraska High School Classics which revisits championships games and adds newly recorded commentary from players and coaches. “We have about 20 years of recordings of high school championship games, and so many of them have bigger stories to tell beyond just a win or a loss,” said Finken.
