Message to Our Members

Last month, we shared our plans to update the Ron Hull Studio and invited you to Imagine the Possibilities of a new era in Nebraska Public Media’s content production. Thank you to everyone who responded with their support! We’re excited to share that the studio renovation is underway. We’ve installed nearly four miles of data cable, one mile of conduit and five miles of wire. Imagine connecting the entire state of Nebraska with just 10 miles of wire!

The studio is now equipped with 7,200 pounds of flypipe (rigging structure attached to the ceiling), which bolsters 193 new LED lighting fixtures. Imagine those lights efficiently illuminating your favorite shows and adding depth and drama to your viewing experience!

Studio floors have been stripped and coated with six gallons of floor wax and soon we’ll move the new scenic design elements into place. We’re excited to customize the look of our studio productions, including the news series Speaking of Nebraska and our local music program Jam

Recently, we’ve given the green light to new productions that integrate and showcase our new LED wall. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we promise the results will be worth the investment!

ON THE COVER

Beginning midsummer, you’ll notice revolutionary changes to the Backyard Farmer set. Imagine host Kim Todd touching an LED screen to zoom in on a picture of a breathtaking bloom or intriguing insect that was sent in by a viewer like you!

In the meantime, celebrate Memorial Day with the National Memorial Day Concert and watch the new local documentary Running Towards the Fire: A War Correspondent’s Story You’ll see how war correspondents, including one born in Omaha, risked their lives to report on the American and Allied forces fighting in WWII. You’ll also find plenty of live sports coverage in May, including NSAA High School Championships for soccer and baseball, Husker baseball and our broadcast of the Husker Spring Volleyball Match on May 4. (See pages 14-15.)

Thank you again for your support and stay tuned!

National Memorial Day Concert

Sunday, May 26

7 & 8:30 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media

Honoring our country’s veterans, servicemen and women and military families, this annual concert is an American tradition and one of PBS’ highest-rated programs.

Become Our Partner

We are reimagining the Ron Hull Studio, a space that’s served as the heart of Nebraska Public Media since 1972.

Outdated equipment at the end of its service life is being replaced with new tools that will revolutionize the time-honored studio. Cameras, LED lights and an LED video wall, new flame-retardant curtains and an advanced, flexible set design are all part of the upgrade that our creative teams will use to produce programs you love to watch.

This investment in our studio is an investment in public media in Nebraska. These changes will sustain our work and provide the critical infrastructure we need to maintain our position as a strong, independent media resource. Visit our website to learn more and make your donation in support of this $6 million upgrade.

Omaha’s newest cultural gem changes the way its visitors see the world.

Along the Missouri in the heart of the city’s reimagined RiverFront, the 82,000-square-foot Kiewit Luminarium exists at the intersection of science, math and technology –blending them with art, music and local culture.

Interactive exhibits and a kaleidoscope of engaging programs aim to spark curiosity in STEM careers among young visitors. It’s a place to dream, play, wonder, experiment and consider something new. (The new destination is featured in the May 9 episode.)

Steven Raichlen’s Planet Barbecue

On May 2, explore the ways Volleyball Day in Nebraska smashed stereotypes and changed conversations about women’s sports. Plus, curious characters find military uniforms, Elvis suits and vintage clothing at Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Costume Library.

Reuben Describes War and Sacrifice

The limestone cliffs and sandy beaches of Normandy, France bore witness to an invasion that ended World War II, but not before millions of people in France and far beyond lost their lives.

On June 6, 1944, 160,000 American, British and Allied troops stormed Normandy’s shores on D-Day. German troops killed or wounded thousands of the soldiers in some of the war’s most intense fighting.

Just hours before history’s greatest amphibious assault, 13,000 U.S. Army Airborne troops flew in darkness from England to parachute behind enemy lines. Among them was Omahaborn Robert Reuben, a 25-yearold witnessing combat for the first time. He was not a soldier. Reuben was a Reuters News war correspondent.

Journalist Barney McCoy researched Reuben’s story for his new documentary Running Towards the Fire: A War Correspondent’s Story. McCoy is a professor in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

A Reuters archivist in London led McCoy to the discovery of Reuben’s typewritten manuscript – untitled and unpublished.

“His memoir provided a wonderful, personal, emotionally powerful path to talk about the experiences of World War II correspondents,” said McCoy. He said their reporting gave voice to the Allied troops defending freedom.

“It helped raise their morale, and it was important for people at home to know about the fight they were waging against the Nazis,” said McCoy. “And Reuben wanted to be part of the biggest story in the world.”

80 ANNIVERSARY CONCERT & HAMMERSTEIN

Friday, May 31

8 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein revolutionized Broadway by blending music, dance and strong storylines to create a new form of musical theatre. An allstar cast pays homage to the duo and blockbusters such as Oklahoma!, South Pacific and The Sound of Music.

Composing the American Musical

In July 1942, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein teamed up for their first collaboration: a musical adaptation of Green Grow the Lilacs. The musical would eventually become Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! – a unique fusion of Rodgers’ musical comedy and Hammerstein’s operetta.

Oklahoma! became a milestone in the development of the American musical and marked the beginning of the most successful partnership in Broadway musical history.

Making a New Mold for Music

Genevieve Randall never imagined herself as a radio announcer.

The flutist was teaching music and working at a natural grocery store when her good friend, the late Jerry Johnston, pitched the idea of working as a substitute radio host.

“I thought it might be fun,” she laughed. “I saw it as another way to perform and I loved classical music.”

Randall said Johnston, then a senior producer, and others soon suggested she could host a new show they’d been considering. “Jerry said, ‘you seem like the kind of person who would enjoy doing this show.’”

The Verge debuted in May 2005, with Randall in the host chair. “I fell in love with the technical aspect of creating it,” she said.

The weekly show is a space for new music that retains classical roots but doesn’t fit the mold of traditional

classical music. It specializes in 20th and 21st-century composers, ensembles and soloists.

Randall curates playlists with a few rules in mind. “Fift y percent of the sound must be traditionally classical; it must be listenable; and it must have a story arc that flows.” A new feature, Verge Arcade, explores music in video games and introduces composers who write scores for the virtual world.

She admits The Verge isn’t for everyone. “Some music is instantly likeable, but some of it is an acquired taste.”

Whether it’s from Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart, or artists featured on The Verge like Michael Torke, Kenji Bunch or the Kronos Quartet, Randall appreciates the humanity of music. “It touches people in ways nothing else can.”

Donors Say Charitable Giving Is Like Planting a Tree

More than 30 years ago, when Jim Harder heard about a fund drive to expand public radio in Nebraska, he wondered why the state needed another radio station. Gradually, he discovered the answer to his question.

“I found I liked the contrast between the ‘new’ station and the other station I listened to,” he explained. “I am a news person.” Today, he enjoys Morning Edition, On Point, All Things Considered and The World.

Jim’s wife Suzie agreed. “I like the news, too, and I really enjoy the classical music. I am a music person,” she said.

In 1972, Jim was working in Crawford as a soil conservationist for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Suzie was in Baltimore teaching nursing and considering medical school. When her father, a local physician, asked her to come to Crawford to care for her stepmother, she moved halfway across the country.

“I’d never lived in a small town, so it was a culture shock. I learned to love it,” she said.

The two met and married by the end of the year. Relocating for Jim’s career, they lived for short stints in Crawford, O’Neill and Pierce and then for 20 years in Beaver City where they raised their three children. Along the way, the couple discovered they enjoyed public television, too.

“We were very invested in public television and radio,” said Jim. “We were heavy consumers.”

An estate planning attorney suggested the Harders consider supporting charitable organizations. Jim said they chose the one that made them feel connected. “We had enough resources, and we didn’t need to give 100 percent to our kids, so we chose to give to Nebraska Public Media.”

“It’s called public television and public radio for a reason,” said Suzie. “The public needs to support it.”

The couple explained they’ve been on the receiving end of kindness in their own lives, financially and from time and talent. It made them want to give back.

“You plant a tree not for yourself, but for future generations,” said the agronomist.

Summarize Your Wishes in A Will

A simple, flexible and versatile way to ensure that future generations of Nebraskans can enjoy the gift of public media is by naming the Nebraska Public Media Foundation in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest.

Bequests allow you to make larger gifts than might be possible during your lifetime. Plus, gifts through a will are flexible and can change as your circumstances change.

Unfortunately, if you die without a will, the transfer of your assets may be very different from what you expect. When you summarize your wishes, you can be sure family, friends and the organizations you want to remember are included.
