Message to Our Members

As we begin Nebraska Public Media's new fiscal year, I find myself reflecting on the exciting future of public media in Nebraska. Today, I want to highlight the exceptional work being done by Nebraska Public Media Labs, our R&D unit pushing the boundaries of public media.
Since its inception in 2016, Labs has led the charge in the creation of groundbreaking content, intersecting innovative technology with compelling storytelling. In collaboration with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Labs provides hands-on, invaluable experience to the next generation of media creators. Many of these bright minds hail from the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts, working closely with our experienced staff to set the standard for public media stations nationwide.
Labs' work, while experimental, often results in acclaimed content. Over the years, it has received recognition for advancements in digital video production, podcasting, 360-video, and immersive virtual experiences. We maintain accessibility as a core value, with Labs continually pioneering the frontiers of interactive and game accessibility.
Currently, Labs has three video games in production, is progressing on "Expedition Nebraska"—our awardwinning virtual museum collaboration with the Nebraska State Museum— and exploring the untapped potential of generative AI to optimize content creation.
Generative AI holds enormous promise for public media. It streamlines the creative process and empowers us to generate more high-quality content efficiently. By developing best practices for these advanced tools, we're enhancing our ability to share more of Nebraska's resonant stories.
In embracing the spirit of innovation, this column itself was crafted with the assistance of ChatGPT Plus, a stateof-the-art language model developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT uses artificial intelligence to generate human-like text, becoming a valuable asset for content creation. By harnessing these technologies, we can better serve our community, continuing as a trusted source of information and inspiration.
As we embark on a new year, I'm grateful for your support. Together, we'll explore public media's future, sharing Nebraska's spirit through technology. To growth, innovation, and impact!

growth, innovation, and impact!
Chief Strategy Officer

NOTE: We experimented with ChatGPT for this column to show you the technology and demonstrate its capabilities. Our editor wrote everything else in this magazine, and I’ll be back with you next month writing my column the ‘old-fashioned’ way.

Fresh Voice for Fresh Air
Award-winning public media journalist Tonya Mosley is the new co-host of Fresh Air. Terry Gross will continue as host and executive producer. The Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine offers listeners intimate conversations about contemporary arts and issues.
Mosley was formerly a correspondent and host of Here & Now, and Fresh Air has occasionally featured her interviews. She's also the host of the awardwinning podcast Truth Be Told

Prior to Here & Now, Mosley was host and Silicon Valley bureau chief for KQED in San Francisco. She was a television correspondent for Al Jazeera America and a television reporter in several U.S. cities.
Mosley has interviewed thousands of people in her career, but her new role will be different. “This work allows me to get deep and narrow in a way that I've always dreamed about and in a way that the listeners expect from a show like Fresh Air and from NPR more generally” she said.
Dave Davies, who wants to make room for other things in his life, will step back from his role as interviewer and fill-in host. His work will still be part of the series from time to time.
Each week, nearly 5 million people listen to Fresh Air on more than 624 NPR stations across the country, as well as in Europe on the World Radio Network. Fresh Air is produced at WHYY in Philadelphia.

Making Work Work For People With I/DD

Wednesday, July 5 at 7 p.m. CT on WORLD
In an inclusive economy, everyone has value, and can participate and benefit by working. Inclusive economies focus on what people can do, not what they cannot, offering real work for real pay.
In our new Connects program, we discuss employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities or I/DDs and explore how job coaches can assist with learning tasks, identify helpful modifications for the employee and work with employers to meet needs.
Nebraska has the lowest unemployment numbers in the country, and helping people with I/DDs join the workforce provides a way for businesses to fill jobs with reliable people who want to work. Inclusive Economy – Making Work Work for People with I/DD is hosted by Alana Schriver, executive director of the Nebraska Association of Service Providers.
Supported Employment Coach Kathy Rohwedder walks a yard with PooPatrol owner Joshua Whitfield.

This program is produced in partnership with the Nebraska Association of Service Providers (NASP), with funding support from the Nebraska Council on Developmental Disabilities and the federal Administration on Disability funds awarded to NASP by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and People First of Nebraska.

A collaboration between Nebraska Public Media Labs and the University of Nebraska State Museum, Expedition Nebraska: A Virtual Natural History Experience allows visitors to travel back in time to prehistoric Nebraska to see how it has changed over the millennia.

Judges recently selected the accessible virtual experience from nearly 14,000 entries, honoring it for Metaverse, Immersive and Virtual Experiences in the 27th Annual Webby Awards. The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, the leading international awards organization honoring excellence on the internet, presents the Webby Awards.
Introducing animals that lived during the millions of years before humans migrated to the land we now call Nebraska, the virtual journey begins in a courtyard set within a landscape resembling Nebraska’s Sandhills at sunset. Visitors can move around this space and others, encountering photogrammetrically rendered animal models, and triggering audio and illustrations. Versions for mobile devices are available in the Apple App and Google Play stores, and for the Quest 2 VR headset in Meta’s App Lab and SideQuest stores.

Virtual Tour Features Tractor Museum

A new virtual tour highlights the significance of Nebraska’s 1919 tractor testing law, designed to encourage the manufacture and sale of improved tractors for farmers. As part of the law, a testing lab was built on the University of Nebraska at Lincoln’s East Campus. The accessible tour explores the Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum roomby-room, offering links to details about the international significance of the legislation, tractor displays, and the evolution of the tractor and agricultural technology industries.

Educational resources and classroom discussion questions embedded in the tour align with state-approved content standards as established by the Nebraska Department of Education. “As we created this virtual experience, we felt so proud to feature stories about how these consumer tests protected farmers in Nebraska and around the world,” said Jessica Mitchell-McCollough, director of education for Nebraska Public Media. “There’s something for everyone to learn.”
The tour is accessible on the Nebraska Public Media website. NebraskaPublicMedia.org/virtualtours
Art Through Adversity

The William Splinter Gallery at the museum features more than a dozen prints created by the late Nebraska artist Craig Cassell. When he was just 17 years old, a swimming accident in the Little Blue River paralyzed all four of his limbs. After rehabilitation, Cassell’s parents encouraged him to draw with a pencil in his mouth. The Fairbury native eventually used a special device constructed by a dentist. Cassell’s work with graphite shows that he embraced agriculture, and he spent time at the museum drawing many of the tractor images now included in its permanent collection. Throughout his life, Cassell spoke to students, encouraging them to pursue their goals in spite of adversity.

FORMER TEACHER, FARMER MAKES SUBSTANTIAL GIFT
Edith Niederhoefer was born on the family farm in Cuming County between the end of World War I and the beginning of the Depression. When she died, she left a $1.1 million gift to Nebraska Public Media.

When they were still young girls, she and her older sister Irene moved with their parents to another of their family’s farms in Burt County. The girls graduated from Oakland High School and while Irene stayed home to care for their mother, Edith attended Midland College (now Midland University) in Fremont to study education. She also earned a Master’s in business education from the University of Northern Colorado-Greeley.
“Edith put herself through college. She lived in a boarding house and helped clean to pay her tuition,” said cousin Lavonne Denning, who grew up with the sisters. “Edith would come home on the weekends to help Irene with the farm and in the evenings they would watch public television. They watched adamantly!”

Nebraska Public Media Chief Strategy Officer Molly Delaney explained that Edith’s gift was a surprise to the network. “We are grateful for donors such as Edith. Her very generous gift will help us ensure that future generations of Nebraskans have similar access to the high-quality public media programming that she enjoyed,” said Delaney.
Edith especially liked Masterpiece and Denning said she also appreciated the network’s educational programs. She taught for 38 years at Nebraska schools in Polk, Scribner, Howells, Pilger, West Point and Omaha, before returning to the family farm in 1983. Neither Edith nor Irene ever married.
Along with growing corn and soybeans, the sisters ran a small cow-calf operation. Until they retired in 2005, they took turns traveling so one of them could always be home to manage the farm.
“Edith followed grain and fertilizer prices and marketed her crops. She worked with tenants who rented their land and ran the business end of the operation,” said Joel Hargens of First Northeast Bank of Nebraska in Hooper, who met Edith when she was in her eighties and was her personal representative.

In her later years, Hargens would drive Edith around to check on the operation. “She wanted to make sure things were the way she wanted them. She was strong willed and kept up with things even while she was living at the Hooper Care Center.”

PRIORITIZE YOUR WISHES IN A WILL

A simple, flexible and versatile way to ensure that future generations of Nebraskans can enjoy the gift of public media is by naming Nebraska Public Media Foundation in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest. Bequests allow you to make larger gifts than might be possible during your lifetime. Plus, gifts through a will are flexible and can change as your circumstances change.
Unfortunately, if you die without a will, the transfer of your assets may be very different from what you expect. When you summarize your wishes, you can be sure family, friends and the organizations you want to remember are included.
