Message to Our Members

In our busy family with two young daughters, PBS KIDS has been a blessing. We first introduced five-year-old Knar to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. We were very impressed with the social and emotional lessons taught by the series, and we learned a few parenting tips from Daniel’s parents, too.

Although we do watch traditional television, we primarily consume PBS KIDS programming with the PBS KIDS App on a tablet. The app allows us to watch as many episodes of a show as we’d like – even five-year-olds like to binge watch!

Our family appreciates finding PBS KIDS in digital spaces and research shows more Nebraska families are doing the same. A new weekday afternoon schedule for Nebraska Public Media launches on Monday, Jan. 2, featuring cooking, travel, documentary, drama and arts programs. We’ll embrace the change knowing that the network’s commitment to Nebraska’s children and education remains strong. (Read more on pages 16-17.)

PBS KIDS offers so much more than 225 hours of children’s television each week. The additional educational content we’ve found online is well researched and high quality, and we

are anxious to introduce our younger daughter Yeraz to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood in a few months.

As a parent, it’s been amazing to have Knar teach us what she’s learned. Her kindergarten teacher has commended her background knowledge, and just recently, she told us about All Souls Day – a lesson from the digital series Jelly, Ben & Pogo. We also appreciate the diversity of themes and characters. And, PBS KIDS addresses topics we can’t find elsewhere, helping our children understand current events like the pandemic.

I serve on the board of Nebraska Public Media because it provides a valuable service to everyone, including families like mine. Whether you watch online, on apps, on the dedicated 24/7 PBS KIDS channel or on Nebraska Public Media, you can trust that what you see and experience will prepare your children for school and a bright future.

INNOVATOR INSIGHTS

Kids ask the questions in the new Innovator Insights educational videos. The media collection, developed with teacher input, is a classroom resource with age-appropriate content for fourthgraders and high school students.

At Meadows Elementary in Ralston and Ralston High School, our What If… host and crew recorded curious kids inquiring about things like risk taking, collaboration, innovation, and learning from failure and success.

“We hope kids will feel empowered to keep asking questions and see their own potential as future innovators,” said Jessica Mitchell-McCollough, Nebraska Public Media’s director of education. The entire collection of Innovator Insights is available in English and with Spanish subtitles, along with resources for teachers.

Digital Shi Leads to Weekday TV Schedule Change

Research shows that more and more families find our PBS KIDS programs and characters anytime, anywhere in digital spaces – watching on smart devices and the internet, as well as on traditional television.

Our PBS KIDS programs prepare kids for school and lead them to a bright future, but as more Nebraskans watch on their own schedule, we are changing ours.

Beginning Jan. 2, we will end our weekday block of PBS KIDS programs on Nebraska Public Media at 3 p.m. CT and a new schedule of programming will fill the remainder of the afternoon. 3 p.m. CT – Cooking, travel and lifestyle programs 4 – 6 p.m. CT – Local and PBS documentaries, drama and arts programs

Education continues to be a guiding pillar for public media. Teachers, parents and caregivers can access free, researchbased PBS KIDS television programs that are accessible, equitable and educational. For nearly 70 years, we have served the state with education and entertainment.

Donors Call Second Radio Channel First-Rate

The Schimeks met on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney and after graduation taught in Colorado and Hastings before moving to Lincoln in 1971.

Herb represented teachers for 40 years as a lobbyist for the Nebraska State Education Association and DiAnna represented the 27th district in the Nebraska Legislature for 20 years. Herb also served six years as the chair of the Nebraska Educational Telecommunications Commission.

Herb Schimek fondly recalls holding one of his two young sons on his lap as they watched some of the first episodes of Sesame Street when it premiered in 1969. It was one of his first experiences with the network –one he would eventually help expand.

“We drafted the public radio bill in my office to establish a statewide network when Jack McBride, then the general manager, came up with the idea to add radio transmitters to the television towers,” Herb recalled.

Many years and many advances in technology later, Herb and his wife DiAnna discovered the network’s HD2 News/Jazz radio channel. “I went out and bought an HD radio so I could hear it,” he said. “We enjoy the variety of programs not heard on the FM radio channel.”

“Both of our car radios are also permanently set to the HD2 channel,” added DiAnna. “The programs are excellent!”

The couple watches public television, too, naming PBS NewsHour, American Experience and Finding Your Roots as favorites. Every Sunday evening, Herb explains the couple is ‘glued’ to their television. “We’ve been watching three Masterpiece programs every week. It’s been glorious!” said DiAnna.

After years of making annual gifts, the retired couple designed a specific plan to support the network in a bigger way–using part of their IRA required minimum distribution. “We need to think about the future. We get so much enjoyment from public media and it means a lot to us. For many older people it can be a good friend,” said DiAnna, who explained they watched many cooking and travel programs during the pandemic. “Public media has made itself almost indispensable, but it still takes support from everyone,” said Herb.
