Message to Our Members
Did you know that Nebraska Public Media has two radio channels and five TV channels, and one of those TV channels is WORLD?
If you haven’t explored our WORLD channel before, this month is a great time to start. WORLD airs PBS news and documentaries and also focuses on original content that spotlights a diversity of voices, telling stories not heard elsewhere.

Like all of our TV channels, WORLD is available free over-the-air with an antenna. You can stream it live at NebraskaPublicMedia.org/live or on the Nebraska Public Media App when you download it on your smartphone or tablet.
Learn more about our channels at NebraskaPublicMedia.org/about.
Due to our coverage of the Democratic National Convention, Backyard Farmer will air on WORLD at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Aug. 22. When Big Red Wrap-Up premieres on Tuesday, Aug. 27, you can watch it each week at 7 p.m. CT on WORLD and at 10 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media.
And, as always, if you miss PBS News Hour weekdays at 6 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media, you can catch it at 9 p.m. CT on WORLD.

What else can you watch on WORLD in August?
If you are a fan of All Creatures Great and Small on Masterpiece, take a trip to the heartwarming world of the Yorkshire Dales with a new special. All Creatures Great and Small: A Season 4 Change takes you behind the scenes with the cast and creators to see how they adapt James Herriot’s beloved books to television screens.
You’ll see how Darrowby pulls together in all sorts of ways, great and small. From rationing to divorce, pregnancy to weather forecasts, season 4 is full of surprises. Watch Saturday, Aug. 31 at 8:30 p.m. CT on WORLD.
Also on your screens this month, you’ll see big changes to the Ron Hull Studio! Thank you to all the individuals, foundations and corporate partners who helped make our studio transformation possible. We especially want to thank the Nebraska Public Media Foundation for a 50 percent match that is accelerating our fundraising and bringing us ever closer to our goal.

Chief Strategy Officer
Thanks to generous support from our community of public media lovers, we’ve reached nearly 70 percent of the $6 million goal for our capital campaign! We still need your support to cross the finish line and fully fund the studio renovations that will sustain our work and unleash infinite possibilities in a new era of television technology.

Tuesdays beginning Aug. 27
7 p.m. CT on WORLD & 10 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media

We Scored a New Set!
As part of our studio renovation, Big Red Wrap-Up is getting a new television home with state-ofthe-art technology to showcase all the big Husker plays. We took this photo as some the new set pieces were unpacked in our studio in Lincoln.

The History of Our Game
We began analysis of Nebraska football on our network in 1959 when Cornhusker Football premiered. The series took a new title in 1991 when it became Big Red Play-By-Play and again in 1995 when it was named Big Red Wrap-Up. The weekly series recaps each Husker football game with expert analysis and game highlights. Throughout the past 65 years, just six sportscasters have hosted the series, including Dick Perry, Bob Zenner, Don Gill, Bill Doleman and Kevin Kugler. Today, Mike’l Severe hosts, along with co-anchors former Husker defensive end Jay Moore, two-time national champion running back Damon Benning, “HuskerOnline” publisher and recruiting expert Sean Callahan and weekly special guests from the world of Nebraska sports.

Host Don Gill interviews Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne.
Our football interview show was called Big Red Play-by-Play from 1991-1995.

COMING IN SEPTEMBER
Another archival episode with new interview footage features The Mighty Jailbreakers, a band that blends blues, funk and soul and country band Full Choke.
The Mighty Jailbreakers keyboardist Mitch Towne is nostalgic about their 1994 concert in the Ron Hull Studio and how public television influenced him, especially music from the iconic Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
“Mister Rogers was one of the first places I got turned onto jazz. Johnny Costa playing piano on the Mister Rogers’ show was an absolute monster,” said Towne.
Full Choke started in Clearwater, Neb., in the ’90s when line dancing was big. “Our favorite regular stops were the ballrooms of Nebraska,” said vocalist Dave Mlnarik.
The band played Top 40 country covers and original songs written and sung by Mlnarik. They performed on the 33rd Street Sessions studio stage in 1994.
“That was super fun. It was like Austin City Limits right here,” said Mlnarik.

Baby Jason and the Spankers Indigenous
More than 30 years ago, live audiences swayed to blues, country, rock and every music genre in between as bands played in our studio on 33rd Street in Lincoln. Since then, we’ve preserved our classic local concert series 33rd Street Sessions in our vault.
Now, we are bringing back some of these episodes and the legendary performances, adding brand-new artist interviews to relive the authentic spirit of Nebraska’s 1990s music scene. The first episode opens with music from Baby Jason and the Spankers.

Drummer Dan Irvin and bass player Jeremey Woerner were still in high school when Jason Davis spotted them playing at a Lincoln High School talent show. The two toured with the band before they even graduated.
Music by Indigenous is up next in the show with frontman Mato Nanji, who was raised on the Ihanktonwan (Yankton) nation in South Dakota with his family band. In 1997, the same year the band played on 33rd Street Sessions, they played at the American Indian Inaugural Ball for former President Bill Clinton.

SET GOALS FOR A NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Getting ready for the first day of school can fill children (and grown-ups) with both excitement and nervousness, but it can be the perfect fresh start as kids move to new classrooms and embark on exciting new learning adventures.
As you pack your child’s backpacks with gear for the new year, don’t forget to fill their minds with goals to help make this school year their best yet.
• Try something new.
• Embrace a new experience, try a new food or join a new after-school club.
• Talk to someone different.
• Encourage your child to introduce themselves to new friends.
• Improve routines.
• Find ways to make school-day routines less stressful and more organized.
• Create visual reminders.
• Make a checklist of things to remember and hang it right by the door.
• Set goals as a family.
• Share your own goals and set family goals together. (An after-dinner walk?)
• Celebrate the small things.
• Praise kids for sticking to their resolutions and accomplishing their goals.

BEDTIME TIPS
Sleep is important for people of all ages, including parents and caregivers. For kids, sleep is essential to growth and development.
• Set up a cozy sleep space. Make sure the sleeping area is a good place to rest with sleep-only items, like a special stuffed animal or blanket.
• Keep the room dark and quiet. The sleep space should be dark to signal the body that it is time for sleep.

• Encourage calm bodies. During the day, make sure your kids have plenty of chances to use their energy, run, play and explore.
• Give comfort and connection. Before settling down to sleep, children need to feel safe and secure.
• Make it a routine. Routines and consistency can be hard at the beginning but over time will help kids know what to expect.

Donor Appreciates Public Media’s Integrity
Carol Hoffman shares her land between Juniata and Kenesaw with a herd of Texas Longhorn Cattle, her small draft horse Daisy and her dog Hank.
A self-proclaimed cowgirl, Hoffman grew up on a family farm near Ohiowa. Her grandfather, a horse trader, used his own two horses Myrtle and Old Doll to pull farm equipment.
One of her favorite Nebraska Public Media programs is the 2022 documentary SADDLE UP: Nebraska’s Working Horses, which looks at all things equine and people who bond with horses for work, therapy and play.
“I saw SADDLE UP and donated right away,” said Hoffman, whose gifts to the network have increased every year since. “Once you take the initial step, it’s easier to take more and bigger steps.”
She taught special education and worked with young people who faced mental health challenges and behavioral issues in the Grand Island Public Schools, retiring – for the first time – in 2016. She soon found another career teaching special education in Kenesaw. She retired again in May.

Her retirement forced her to begin taking a Required Minimum Distribution from an Individual Retirement Account. Instead of taking the entire amount, Hoffman chose to donate a portion as a Qualified Charitable Distribution.
“It’s so simple. I call my investment company; give them an amount and they write a check that I can present or mail to the organization. The process makes me feel good and it reduces the income tax I must pay,” she explained.
Hoffman especially enjoys watching NATURE, NOVA and Masterpiece “It’s all quality television and I am inspired to support it because every program speaks with integrity.”
Hoffman matched challenges during PBS News Hour, donated during The Magic of Murals and pledged her support for Imagine the Possibilities: Ron Hull Studio Update.
She takes the gifts she receives in exchange for her donations – and donates them. SADDLE UP videos went to the Kenesaw FFA and The Magic of Murals puzzle found a new home with the art program.
“They are valuable tools for education and the kids love them. I like to think they are gifts that keep on giving.”

When you make a QCD to Nebraska Public Media, you’ll be able to see the difference your gift makes during your lifetime. We’ll put your gift to use right away, producing and purchasing more of the programming you love to watch and hear!
