Message to Our Members
At last, spring is here and so is one of my favorite warm weather traditions –the road trip.
After an unplanned three-year hiatus, we’re packing our bags and hitting the highway for On the Road.
April 20, 21 and 22, our tour takes us to northeast Nebraska with stops to see you in Wayne, Columbus, Fremont, West Point, Valley and Omaha. Our schedule is action-packed with Town Talks, screenings and PBS KIDS family events. (Visit NebraskaPublicMedia.org/ontheroad or call us at 800-634-6788.)
Here are some highlights:
• Be part of our audience for radio’s Friday LIVE at Ley Theatre on the Wayne State College campus
• Join us for a Public Media Trivia Night at West Point Brewing Co.
• Check out vintage roadsters and watch Classic Car Love Stories at Valley’s Quasar Drive-In
Personally, I can’t wait to hang out with Daniel Tiger at our family events! Remember, everything we’ve planned is free and open to the public.
If you can’t join us for On the Road, you can always travel the state with us through the magic of media. Mark your calendar for the return of Backyard Farmer at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, April 6, and join us for more fresh episodes of Nebraska Stories.
Speaking of road trips, I was privileged to be among a group of five staff, board and commission members who headed to Capitol Hill last month for the 2023 Public Media Summit. We all wore red to the Nebraska Breakfast on March 1 to celebrate the 155th anniversary of Nebraska’s admission to the Union. We were able to meet with Senators Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts, as well as Representatives Don Bacon, Mike Flood and staff from Adrian Smith’s office.
During our time with the Nebraska delegation, we highlighted various aspects of our service to the state and shared testimonials from viewers and listeners in each of Nebraska’s Congressional districts.
We used your words to explain our commitment to local news and unbiased reporting, the value of our high school sports coverage and the important role we play in keeping Nebraskans safe and connected. Wherever we go, we take you with us. Thank you for being a great travel companion!

NSAA SPEECH CHAMPIONSHIPS: BEST OF THE BEST

Sunday, April 30 1 p.m. CT on
Nebraska Public Media
Selected high school students perform their award-winning state championship speeches!
This program was recorded in the Ron Hull Studio at Nebraska Public Media in Lincoln.
8 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media
A Story Carved in the Plains
Near downtown Lincoln, a timeless relic famous for clandestine meetings and romantic interludes keeps its secrets close.
For more than 150 years, rumors, speculation and myth surrounded a 5,600 square foot sandstone cave and stories still run strong through more than 500 feet of manmade tunnels fashioned by pickaxes and shovels.
Named for the outlaw Jesse James, Robber’s Cave is famous for horse
gambling and ghosts, breweries and bats, college parties and counterfeit coin making. Could the truths about the cave be stranger than fiction? (Find out in our April 13 episode!)

Also in April, embrace the future with North Omaha advocate Preston Love, Jr., see Oregon Trail relics, peel away the history of Pioneers Park pillars, follow immigrants living the American dream, and meet a man whose homemade balloon spread seeds of faith.

NPR Focuses on Climate Reporting
Julia Simon is NPR’s new climate solutions reporter. Her stories focus on understanding the scientific, behavioral and policy solutions people are adopting to address the consequences of climate change.
Simon is no stranger to NPR audiences. She has reported on climate and energy, contributed to the science, international and business desks for NPR News, and reported for podcasts such as Planet Money, Rough Translation, Short Wave, Life Kit and Code Switch.

Simon covered the tree math of carbon offsets, misinformation derailing renewable energy projects and traveled into the Sumatran rainforest in search of climate solutions. Her career began in 2009 in Cairo, where she researched Egyptian renewable energy projects and stayed to work for BBC News.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, Simon earned a degree in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and spent a fellowship year studying international energy and climate change at the Sciences Po in Paris.

Donor Made Connections Through History, Storytelling
Dorothy Abbott connected people for nearly 50 years as a telephone operator. A lifelong Nebraskan, she began her career in Lexington when she was just 18 years old, moved to North Platte in 1965 and transferred to Omaha in 1980. Dorothy retired from AT&T in 1993, making history by answering the last phone call to an operator.
“She saw all of the changes in phone technology,” said her niece Deb Hatfield. Dorothy died in March 2022, leaving a final gift to Nebraska Public Media by including the network as a beneficiary of her retirement plan.
“She never had cable which is one reason she loved Nebraska Public Media. She really relied on the station and always wanted to learn more.” Dorothy watched Downton Abbey, travel and British comedy series, films by Ken Burns, PBS NewsHour and music programs.

“She loved all kinds of music – 50s and 60s, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Minelli, Big Band and the symphony. She enjoyed going to the Orpheum and the Holland Center,” said Hatfield. She also traveled, visiting Europe, the Panama Canal and South America.
“Even after losing her own mother at a young age and never having children herself, Dorothy was an important figure in the lives of her 12 nieces and nephews,” recalled Hatfield. “’Aunt Dort’ made all of us feel special. She remembered all of our birthdays and had a great sense of humor – everything made her laugh.”
Dorothy was also a storyteller and the ‘keeper’ of family history, as well as the one to ask if you needed to identify someone in a photo or remember a name. She grew up on a farm, living through the Depression.
“Her parents taught her to be thrifty, but she lived life to the fullest,” said Hatfield. Dorothy was a member of the Daughters of the America Revolution for 54 years, sang in her church choir and spent hours volunteering at the Tip Top Thrift Shop in Omaha.
Her estate gift will preserve the future of public media in our state and fund storytelling that will educate, entertain and connect future generations of Nebraskans.
