A Message from the Interim President Dear NDA Community, Little did I ever imagine when I left Notre Dame Academy in June of 1999 that I would be walking these halls again in 2019.

These past eight months have been full of blessings. In September, I attended my first Triton Academic & Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony and was deeply touched by the stories shared by our guests, 12 honorees and three state championship sports teams. Brian Buss wanted us to know that “the Premontre support system was nothing short of a family commitment.” Each additional speaker shared an inspirational story about what he or she had taken to heart while at NDA and how it made a difference in their adult life.

I am excited and happy to report to you that same spirit of community is very much alive in the school today. What makes a Catholic school different? Our faith isn’t just something we believe in but is something we do. Jesus loves us and came to earth to teach us how to live. Remember, Jesus and his dad, Joseph, were in the construction business. Jesus used his background to tell his audiences that each of us is given a life to live (construct) and we choose whether we will build our lives (house) on sand or on rock. The quality of our character (work) will be tested by fire so all can see whether or not it keeps its value.

This parable should sound familiar to you. Here’s your hint.

There are three basic elements to this story: 1) The primary characters are builders — they each build a house. 2) Not all houses are created equal; there is a contrast between wise building and foolish building. 3) Each house faces a test. If the house was built wisely, it stands; if it was built foolishly, it falls. Sound familiar?

It’s the story of the three little pigs! Thus our work at NDA is aimed at helping our students understand this foundational basis of their lives.

Jesus also tells us that we should “let our yes be yes and our no be no”. Then he went on and shared the deepest secrets of happiness. Blessed or happy are you when material goods aren’t the treasures you seek after in life; relationships with family and friends are your pearls of greatest value. Happy are you when you are meek, when you know that all you have comes from God and that God journeys with you everywhere you choose to go during your lifetime. Happy are you when you realize that God is your best friend. No matter how many mistakes you make,

no matter how often you forget God is in your life, you can still count on God because God is always within you, providing you inspiration, gut wisdom and daily miracles to draw you back into your relationship with the true Source of your life.

Jesus asks the same question of us that he once asked his disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” That is the question each one of has to answer because it determines how we live out our lives and how well we complete the one task that God has given to every one of us—“love Me with all your heart and soul and love your neighbor as yourself!” This is our responsibility: to build the kingdom of heaven that Jesus started for us 2,000 years ago.

JAMAICA SERVICE TRIP The students and staff helped local individuals by building houses, painting and cleaning the children’s center, and spending time with the kids.

Seeing our students interact with the kids and people in Jamaica was indescribable, but definitely one of the highlights of my life was seeing the love between us and them,” Director of Campus Ministry Daniel Kriegl said. “It just reminded me how beautiful the world is and how truly present God is if we open our hearts and minds to other people.

MY JAMAICAN SHADOW I was living in a dream. Mountains of garbage stretched across the horizon, consuming the land. It seemed as if a nuclear bomb was dropped, and all that was left was rubble. Plastic of every imaginable product covered the dirt roads. Hundreds of scavenging birds circled the heaps. Glass shards were littered everywhere.

The sun made life unbearable. The hot garbage baked in the sun all day to eventually decay. The powerful stench burned our nostrils, making it hard to breathe. The scene felt surreal. For someone who lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, these conditions seemed unlivable, but for the Jamaican kids of Kingston, this was reality.

On our first day walking through the garbage dump community, I adopted a shadow. At first, my shadow was quiet; his only form of communication was with his eyes. Immediately I noticed he was barefoot, not fazed by the broken glass or the scorching hot surfaces.

Nonchalantly he grabbed my hand and began to walk, without paying any attention to me. With every step, he was right by my side. If I went somewhere to work, he would be there. As the day went on, he began to feel more comfortable with me and answered simple questions about himself. I learned the little shadow was named Leon. Leon was like no other kid I’d ever seen before. Leon had lived in the garbage dump community all his life. From sunrise to sunset he was on his own. His parents were nowhere to be found. All day the independent 10-year-old roamed the streets of Jamaica, surviving.

Fifteen students from Notre Dame Academy and three chaperones made a week-long service trip to Kingston, Jamaica, last July.

The trip was through International Samaritan, a nonprofit focused on helping those living in severe poverty in garbage dump communities.

I thought of my younger brother, who is the same age, and how dependent he is on my parents to drive him to school, make food to eat and provide all the other basic necessities. However, Leon lived a completely different lifestyle than most 10-year-olds. My relationship with Leon grew rapidly, and I started to learn more about his life story. Leon’s father was shot in the head when Leon was young, leaving him fatherless. He told me how much

he missed his dad and how he wishes he could bring him back.

Leon was a pretty tough kid and this was the first time I saw his sensitive side. He became emotional and quiet as he thought about his father. I could feel the pain of his childhood through his voice, and yet I could never understand what he went through.

A few days later, Leon was acting differently than his usual self.

He had been holding onto his stomach and complaining how hungry he was. I asked him when he last ate. He looked at me and said he hadn't eaten in two days. He explained that his mother was just fired from her job, so they couldn't afford food. At that moment I realized I didn't know what hunger really was or felt like. I couldn't imagine being that young and going days without any food. I began to comprehend just how privileged I am to have all the basic necessities…and so much more…at my fingertips. I took for granted having food on my plate.

The toughest part of the whole trip was saying goodbye to Leon.

He cried as he realized it was time for me to leave forever. Leon buried his teary eyes in my shirt and gave me a long hug. He asked me to never forget him. It seemed time had stopped at that moment. We both knew this was probably the last time we’d ever see each other. It was hard to accept. I spent a full week building a relationship with Leon, never realizing our time was so limited.

I went to Jamaica to make a difference in the garbage dump community. But my experience was the opposite of what I anticipated.

I would have never guessed that a little Jamaican shadow named Leon would have such a significant impact on me. Leon opened my mind to a whole different world and helped to change my perspective on the poor. I can only hope I made a memorable impression on him. I will never forget my friend, Leon.

A Message from the Principal

We share a common story

Dear NDA Community, Growing up in a large Irish Catholic family just outside Detroit, I often reflect on the fact that my parents not only sent all nine of their children to Catholic grade school, but insisted they each attend Catholic high school and were clearly elated when the majority of us enrolled in Catholic colleges and universities. The foundational formative reality in our house was we should root for the University of Notre Dame’s football team, we should never miss Mass on Sunday and any time spent in a public institution was time that could have been better spent.

Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Plymouth, Michigan, saw nine Browne children graduate with honors and the three eldest of my brothers register to attend the University of Detroit Jesuit High School where two of them graduated as valedictorian and salutatorian. My oldest sisters attended Mercy High School for girls, and the well-developed plan to each year enroll one more son or daughter in a Catholic high school was running like a Chicago train – on plan, by design and with no interruptions either real or perceived.

Despite the clear life plan my parents had for their children, life became complicated when the city of Detroit saw an exodus to the suburbs caused by the effects of the riots. The University of Detroit Jesuit High School was surrounded by some of the most dangerous streets in any urban setting in America.

Suddenly, as if overnight, my parents had to rethink their dream and make a decision about where they would send their younger children to high school. Was it worth the ‘risk’ to stay in Detroit or should the younger two boys register at Detroit Catholic Central, a high school run by the Basilian priests which had recently moved to the suburb of Redford? Was it justifiable to abandon the city and enroll in a suburban school? Did Basilian priests know as much about education as Jesuits? While the energy crisis saw gas lines grow long and supplies grow scarce was it even possible to drive 45 minutes each way to attend high school?

my parents had in raising a family, I asked my dad if it was difficult to make the decision to send his younger children to a different school than his older children. After a couple of moments he responded, “Well Pat, I knew it was never going to be the same, but your mother and I agreed that at least it was Catholic and over time we grew to be at peace with our decision.”

As we celebrate our 30th year at Notre Dame Academy, I want to thank you for your support of Catholic education. While NDA ‘celebrates,’ I know some members of our NDA Family are still working to embrace the evolution of Catholic education in Green Bay. For some, it wasn’t the Catholic education you may have envisioned for your son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter, but as we are one Body please know you are an important part of the NDA Family. You are always welcome here, and we are all one in Christ today and always.

Welcome to a place where students grow on all levels As the Director of Enrollment at Notre Dame Academy, one of my favorite parts of my role is meeting new families and sharing the story of our school and what we have to offer.

NDA provides an environment that allows students to grow academically, spiritually and socially. Our students are challenged to become the best version of themselves by being members of our welcoming and supportive community.

We are proud to share that our students complete an average of 15,000 hours of community service each year, achieve the highest ACT score in the region (25.8 for the Class of 2019) and maintain a 100 percent graduation rate.

In line with our mission, we accept students with a wide range of ability levels and customize their schedule to reflect those academic strengths. Our rigor in the classroom helps students to not only be their best selves in the classroom, but in today’s society. NDA’s well-qualified and caring faculty takes the time to get to know their students as individuals and nurture their talents, often even unveiling new talents.

Further, we offer a multitude of faith opportunities that include daily Mass, mission trips and weekly Eucharistic Adoration.

In addition to this engaging learning and spiritual experience, NDA offers a full range of interscholastic athletics, and a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular activities. A Message from the Director of Events & Alumni Relations

Simple gestures not forgotten

Dear Alumni, I had the privilege of meeting Jamie (Reince) Koepke last September at the Triton Academic & Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony.

Jamie flew in from South Carolina to accept the award on behalf of her mother, Helen Reince, who was one of our inductees. Jamie’s mom passed away in 1987 after teaching at St. Joseph Academy for 18 years. Helen was an amazing teacher that left her influence on many of the young women she taught.

But there is something else that made the biggest impression on me that evening. After the ceremony, Jamie approached me and asked if Notre Dame Academy would accept her mom’s award and display it in the school so future generations would know about her mother.

Jamie stepped aside, took a final picture of the award and then gently placed it in my hands. Alumni Updates Muriel (Basten) Keyser, SJA 1949, celebrated her 70th Class Reunion on Oct. 3 at Bay Family Restaurant in Green Bay with her great granddaughter, Eva Safford.

James (Lodzinski) Logan, SNHS 1951, resides in Marshfield. He is one of three ordained priests from his high school class. The others are Carl and Thomas Muelemans.

George Howlett, Jr., CCHS 1954, is still active as a Forest Ecologist working on timber sales “if it ever stops raining.”

Tommy Holmes, CCHS 1955, lives in Austin, Texas, and is the Senior Vice President of Commercial Business Development with Capital Faith of Texas. He has been married 58 years to his University of Texas “college sweetheart” and they have two girls and one granddaughter.

Harvey Quinette, SNHS 1955, celebrated 40 years as a Deacon. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Green Bay Diocese in 1979 and assigned to St. Joseph, which is now our Lady of Lourdes. He was granted Emeritus Status in 2009 and remains on the Ministry Team at St. John’s Homeless Shelter. Over the years, Deacon Harvey has had the privilege of having an audience with Pope John Paull II in Detroit, Pope Benedict in Rome and serving as Deacon at Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Bob McDevitt, PHS 1965, and his wife, Mary, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their daughters, Anne and Katie, and their families in Door County just prior to their permanent move to Green Valley, Ariz.

John Garot, PHS 1960, flew to Washington D.C. for a Northeast Wisconsin Old Glory Honor Flight on Sept. 11, 2019, to view memorials. John was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps from 1965-1967, serving two years in Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Paul Novotny, PHS 1961, is completing his sixth and final year as President of the Green Bay Diocesan Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. There are now 44 SVdP Parish Conferences in the Diocese. Paul encourages other alumni to join the Society and grow spiritually as they serve people in need.

Mary (Nielsen) James, SJA 1962, and her husband, Clarence, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Oct. 31, 2019. They have three wonderful children, four grandsons, six step grandchildren, two great grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren whom they love very much.

Gene Nelson, PHS 1965, and his wife, Rosa, took a trip to Minnesota and Wisconsin. In Minneapolis, they saw sites like the Basilica of St. Mary and the Stone Arch Bridge. In Madison, they visited three museums on the Capital Square, the Olbrich Botanical Garden and the newly renovated St. Paul University Church. In Green Bay, they visited the National Railroad Museum, Heritage Hill, met Fr. John McCarthy at St. Willebrord Church in addition to spending a day in Door County.

Mike Titel, PHS 1969, joined the U.S. Coast Guard and graduated first from boot camp. He received the Commandants Letter of Commendation, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Department of Commerce Public Service Award, the highest award extended by the federal agency. In 1989, he was awarded the city of Green Bay’s highest award, the Citizen Service Medal, which is given to an individual who saves a life without regard for their own personal safety. He graduated from UWGreen Bay with degrees in public administration and political science. He has been married to his wife, Ann, for 40 years and they have two children and two grandchildren.

Dennis Maloney, PHS 1969, was recognized as the “Distinguished Alumnus Award” recipient at the Premontre Class of 1969’s 50th class reunion last summer that his mother accepted on his behalf. Maloney, who passed away in 2007, drew national praise and funding for his restorative justice program for youth offenders. There is a book in the Library of Congress titled “Legacy of Community Justice” written by Maloney, who inspired many of the leaders of today’s restorative and community justice fields.

Tom Fritsch, PHS 1971, writes “it’s so important to stay connected by faith, family, friends and teachers, past and present. Take time to make a call, send a text, ‘How are you doing? Thinking about you.’”

David Kaster, APHS 1983, has over 30 years of experience in real estate.

He has an extensive background in internet marketing, with an emphasis in luxury real estate. He is a certified Coldwell Banker Global Luxury Property Specialist with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group and the Team Leader for the GreenBayHomeTeam.com and iLoveDoorCounty.com team.

Matthew Liebmann, NDA 1992, is an Archaeology Professor at Harvard University. He has collaborated with the Pueblo of Jemez in New Mexico for two decades, serving as tribal archaeologist and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act program director for the Jemez Department of Natural Resources. He authored, “Revolt: An Archaeological History of Pueblo Resistance and Revitalization in 17th Century New Mexico.” He led a group of undergraduates and graduate students to Jemez last summer to help members of the tribe excavate the site of two mission churches.

Liz (Weiss) Goldman, NDA 1994, is the principal at Saint John the Baptist Catholic School in Waunakee.

Her husband, Dave, and their daughter, Reese, love being back in Wisconsin after spending six years in Virginia. While in Virginia, Liz completed her Master’s in Education at Marymount University. This is her second year as the principal of Saint John the Baptist Catholic School in the Diocese of Madison.

William Novak, NDA 2001, retired from the practice of law in 2014 and currently resides in Arlington, Va., with his wife, Mary, and their son, John (2).

He spends too much time each day taking care of an eldery pug, Betty (12), and a very active community garden plot.

Matt Paprocki, NDA 2001, was named President of the Illinois Policy Institute, the nation’s largest state-based think tank, and an advocate for the free market to lift up the poor and disadvantaged. He was also appointed by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights to a four-year term as a member of its Illinois Advisory Committee and serves as the Chairman of the Illinois Policy Political Action Committee. He resides in Lincoln Park, Ill., with his wife, Anna, and daughter, Fiona.

Chelsea (Selinsky) Hoholek, NDA 2011, welcomed a baby boy, Elijah John, in April 2019.

Mary Lovell, NDA 2014, authored her first book with her mother, Sally.

The book, “Glass Storm: The 2005 Stoughton, Wisconsin Tornado,” recollects their accounts of being in the middle of the storm. Experience their heart-wrenching account in the book as Mary received what she thought would be the last phone call from her mother.

Bryn Allen, NDA 2015, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame last May. She is currently attending Georgetown Law School.

Megan Southwick, NDA 2016, traveled to Moscow, Russia, to compete in an international artificial intelligence computer programming competition.

The 48-hour hackathon challenged participants to develop a program to allow autonomous cars to recognize and identify Russian traffic signs during winter conditions.

Ready to lead My forehead dripping with sweat and my body shaking with fatigue, a deep feeling of dread permeated my stomach. I remembered the words my mother spoke to me on the phone the night before: You’re going to be all right. In the heart of the Virginian wilderness, miles from the nearest road, I stood as still as can be. Inches from my face was Staff Sergeant Figueroa, a United States Marine, who was the gleaming definition of a war-hardened soldier. The veins along his forehead bulged while his gaze narrowed in on me. I held my breath, hoping he would pass by. The standoff continued for what seemed to be an hour. Finally, Staff Sergeant barked that he needed a volunteer to help him out.

I thought back to my first few hours on the base. We had arrived at Officer Candidate School to a screaming soldier in a fancy hat who told us with lots of vulgar terms to hurry up and get moving. Scrambling for my duffle bag, I dragged my petrified body off the bus and into hell. Everything about the Marine Corps seemed cold and inhumane. The obstacle courses towered above me with a menacing glare. The screams of new recruits echoed through the concrete walls. Bathrooms were devoid of all privacy; stall doors and toilet paper were nonexistent.

The barracks had a large hole in the roof where water dripped in. Even the Marines themselves seemed alien and oblivious to our suffering. When I asked a sergeant how females were supposed to manage a whole week without toilet paper, he responded with a gruff, “Figure it out.”

To this day, I’m not sure if I acted out of terror, stupidity, or bravery. But when Staff Sergeant Figueroa’s icy stare penetrated into my soul, my hand shot up. Internally, I was kicking myself for volunteering, knowing I was setting myself up to be singled out. Little did I know, the simple act of raising my hand would lead to Emerson Dycus receives the “Excellence in Leadership” award from Maj. Gen. It turns out that I had volunteered to be a squad leader for the week. My duties were to be in charge of a group of 15 or so kids, teach them drill, lead them in marching, and act as a liaison between the Marines and the kids. As simple as that sounds, being a squad leader at the Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy changed my life. I discovered that out of the grit of life comes some of the most beautiful lessons.

Going in, I saw the Marine Corps as a horrifying and superhuman branch of the military. Now, I see them as some of the most honorable men and women in the world. On the outside, they are tough. But every Marine is like a lotus in the swamp.

Inside they are the most humble, caring, and respectable people.

They strive daily to live out their core values of honor, courage, and commitment. They believe whole-heartedly in the value of a team and never leave a fellow brother behind. They taught me that the best things in life don’t come easy and that sacrifice is the best way to strive for peace and love in the world.

While I don’t plan on becoming a Marine, I still strive to live up to their standards every day. My experiences with them, although grueling, shaped me into the person I am. The most valuable advice I carry with me ironically came from the person who scared me the most: Staff Sergeant Figeroua. He taught me that despite what life throws at you, your battles are always won within.

A new meaning to ‘Student Teacher’ Though many of her students don’t know it, Notre Dame Academy theology teacher Jane Hall has given new meaning to the term ‘Student Teacher.’

Every day, instead of using her prep period to grade papers or plan lessons, Hall attends Mandarin class taught by her colleague and friend, Qiuhong Zhang.

While her time in the Mandarin classroom began six years ago, Mrs. Hall’s interest in the subject began decades before.

“When I was in high school, we had two boys from Japan that stayed with our family. After 40 years we got a phone call from these two guys inviting my whole family to Japan,” recalled Hall. “I thought it was a joke. Who does that?”

Despite her initial shock, Hall and her family accepted, taking a 10-person vacation to the Empire of the Sun. As luck would have it, the very year after Hall’s trip, a new face was added to the NDA faculty roster: Mandarin teacher, Mrs. Zhang.

“I thought, ‘I would just like to learn something that was in the Asian countries,’” said Hall, as she had dabbled in Japanese in preparation for her trip.

“I asked her if I could sit in her class and she said, ‘Well, I guess so.’ Then I said, ‘I don’t want to just sit in there, I’d like to learn along with the kids,’ and she said, ‘Are you serious?’ and I said, ‘Yes.’” Learning the language itself was not quite a simple process.

Mandarin Chinese is commonly ranked among the hardest language for English speakers to learn.

“For every single word there are four things you need to know,” Hall said. “You need to know the character, you need to know the pinyn, you need to know the [tollmark] of the pinyin, and you need to know the definition. One word like [ba] could mean four different things.”

Outside of vocabulary, even simple sentence structure can be a minefield. “I’m so conditioned to speak a certain way in English. Mrs. Zhang keeps telling me, ‘Don’t think in English, think in Mandarin,’” Hall said.

The theology teacher spends her class time side-by-side with other students, learning and working as they do.

“I take all the exams with the kids. I have to do the presentations like they have. That is unbelievably humbling,” she remarked.

“I think I’ve become a better teacher because of it. All of a sudden, I know what my students are going through. It’s a constant reminder of how it feels as you look at other people being successful.” Sometimes, the students become the teachers, helping Hall out as they would any classmate.

“I feel like when I walk in there, I lose the title of teacher,” she said. “Learning really is a lifelong process. It’s not just something that you learn one thing and hold onto that for the rest of life. At any age you can try something new.”

“It’s so life-giving to me,” she added. “It’s something fresh and exciting all over again.” Her Mandarin teacher sees her as an example of a true IB lifelong learner. Despite her passion for the subject, Hall’s confidence, especially in her speaking and listening skills, often wavers.

“Being so afraid of making a mistake or saying something that’s not accurate, that’s really nerve-wracking,” she said. “It reminds me of the one time I went zip-lining off the mountains in Colorado. I remember standing at the edge of that mountain. They’re telling me to go and I’m thinking ‘You gotta be kidding me.’”

“I get those feelings, once in a while,” she admitted. “‘What am I doing? Why am I doing this? Am I trying to be something I’m not?’ But then I keep thinking, ‘Wow, this is so fascinating.’”

“Just go with it,” she advised. “Just jump!”

Community Shines Through at

Leslie Vogel couldn’t help but smile as she reminisced.

Her parents were chairs of the Abbot Pennings auction in the 1980s, and she can recall watching them help raise almost $100,000 for the Catholic high school.

It’s the story Vogel fondly told while selling raffle tickets for Tritonfest at a table during a Notre Dame Academy boys basketball game this season.

“I saw my mom do that, and I wanted to do it as a parent now,” said Vogel, who is a co-chair for Tritonfest, NDA’s largest fundraising and community building event.

“We’re really hoping to grab people’s interest and get them back in the doors to see how amazing Notre Dame has become.”

This school year marks the 30th anniversary of Notre Dame Academy.

Vogel was a senior in 1991 during its first year following the merger of Abbot Pennings, Premontre and her alma mater, St. Joseph Academy.

Her graduating class at NDA featured four different diploma types due to the uniqueness of bringing together three high schools.

Wied is a familiar name at NDA. Rae Wied, a sophomore, is one of six Wieds currently at NDA.

While the transition wasn’t easy at first, the shared values of seeing students receive a quality education in a faith-based environment is what ultimately has shined through and continues to thrive today.

NDA isn’t just a school. It’s a community, one with a history of greatness that future generations will continue to carry on.

“You want them to experience something that we experienced,” said Susan Lin, who is a 1991 SJA graduate and has two daughters currently attending NDA. “I would only send them to a Catholic high school.

“My mom’s family was very, very Catholic. Even though they didn’t have a lot of money, they wanted their kids to have that Catholic education. It was that important to them.”

Sharon Apple, Lin’s mother, is a SJA alumna from the Class of 1959. All of her siblings also went to Catholic high schools and all of their children followed the same path.

The Apples are just one example of the many family trees in the NDA community that have deep Catholic education roots.

“My mom went to the Academy” Amy Rader said. “My grandma went to the Academy. All of my mom’s siblings went to the predecessor schools.”

Rader and her husband, Mike, both graduated from NDA in the early 1990s. Other than their college years, the couple has been a staple at NDA since Mike joined the football team’s coaching staff in 1998.

The Raders have five children, two of which are recent NDA graduates and two are currently attending NDA. The youngest, Andrew, will be a part of NDA’s Class of 2025.

“What we really like is the infusion of faith-based values throughout everything that is present in the school,” Amy Rader said.

“It’s almost like an immersion.”

Gaetano and Amanda Auricchio met at NDA and were members of the Class of 1994, which was the first class to spend all four years together at NDA following the merger.

Federrico Auricchio ran at the WIAA state cross country meet, helping the NDA boys team finish as the Division 2 state runner-up. Auricchio’s mom, Amanda, was a freshman on the 1990 girls cross country team, which won NDA’s first state championship.

Gaetano is Catholic, while Amanda’s family turned to Catholic education when her older brother started attending Premontre in the 1980s to prepare to get into college.

Maintaining NDA’s status as a top college prep school is

important to the Auricchios and ultimately why Amanda decided to get involved as a co-chair for Tritonfest.

Really, that’s what I want for my kids.”

That’s the common bond everyone within the NDA community shares. “The community of the school has not changed,” said Alisa Conway, a 1994 NDA graduate, parent and current member of the school’s Board of Education.

“When you run across someone and find out they were a graduate of Notre Dame Academy or one of the predecessor schools, there is a pretty strong connection that happens quickly that I don’t think happens across a lot of other schools. That extension of the community is just a wonderful attribute of Notre Dame Academy.”

Chris Stefanick, an internationally-known speaker and star of the TV show “Real Life Catholic,� spoke to the students after the Mass and to a public audience that evening of over 2,000 during a Reboot! Live! event.

The marching band was a part of the 36th annual Green Bay Holiday Parade on Nov. 23.

Senior Caragan Olles was named the 2019 Hometown Hero for the Second Assembly District in November. Olles, shown with Rep. Shae Sortwell in Madison, was named one of 10 national winners for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award earlier in 2019. Olles has raised almost $200,000 through her non-profit, Bright Young Dyslexics, which focuses on helping students with dyslexia.

The boys cross country team finished as the WIAA Division 2 state runner-up on Nov. 2 at the state cross country meet in Wisconsin Rapids. Sharing the Catholic faith from India to Rome Notre Dame Academy’s beloved chaplain, Father Christian Raj, O. Praem., returned home to India in November and also made a visit to Rome for the first time.

He went to India for the dedication of the new Norbertine Abbey in Jamtara before taking in many of the historic landmarks in Rome.

“The trip to Rome was wonderful,” Raj said. “It was my first visit to Rome, and I enjoyed every moment, especially the historical places.”

While in Rome he attended a papal Mass at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul during the closing of the Synod on the Amazon, a meeting of bishops from the Amazon area in South America.

Raj also visited the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, Trevi Fountain, Vatican Museum, the Catacombs, the Spanish steps, Palatine Hill, Santa Maria Maggiore and a few other historical places.

“While in India I was the secretary for the definitory (council) meeting with the Abbot General and four other Abbots, including Abbot Dane Radecki,” he said.

Raj had to write down the minutes for the meeting.

“I was happy to be present Fr. Christian Raj with Abbot General Jos for the blessing of the new Wouters, the head of the Norbertine Order, in Abbey Church, which was front of the new Abbey Church in India. a dream realized for the Indian Norbertines in India,” Raj explained. The new Abbey Church was built with much support from the De Pere Abbey.

Despite the small percentage of Catholics, India has the second largest Catholic population in Asia after the Philippines.

This is Raj’s second year in the United States.“I knew I wanted to be a priest when I was 14 years old,” he said.

Raj studied in a Catholic school where priests and nuns were teachers, and their service is what inspired him to become a priest. “My mother inspired me a lot to become a priest,” he said. “She is very prayerful and regularly attends church.”

Priests and nuns in the Catholic schools where he studied also inspired him to the priesthood.

Raj has two older brothers and an older sister. His siblings are married, and he has three nephews and three nieces. Raj’s mother passed away in 2017, but he still has his dad.

“I plan to bring my dad and siblings to the United States after two or three years,” he said. “They are excited to see it as well.”

Raj finds himself getting more and more assimilated to the American lifestyle. NDA has helped him in his transition here.

The chaplain said he is planning to renew his visa next year but emphasized his “future is in the hands of God.”

“There are over 19.9 million Catholics in India,” Raj said, “which represents around 1.55 percent of the total population.

There are 174 dioceses in India organized into 30 provinces.

Only 132 are Latin Catholic, and the others are Syrian rites.”

Raj added, “Numerous misconceptions about Christianity still exist in the minds of the Hindus. Fundamental Hindus are not happy converting people to Christianity although people themselves like to become Christians.”

Koenig ‘ALL IN’ as new Athletic Director Matthew Koenig wanted to gauge how he would fit in at Notre Dame Academy.

It’s why Koenig pulled up a photo on his phone of checkered-pattern pants in NDA colors and asked during his interview if it would be OK if he wore them should he get the job as the school’s new athletic director.

“I wanted to get an idea of what this place was like,” Koenig said.

“I don’t like to bring attention to myself with them, but I want to show these kids that I’m all in here.”

Koenig has been a perfect fit as NDA’s Athletic Director.

The Ohio native possesses a fun-loving personality more colorful than the checkered-pattern pants he’ll wear on special occasions.

“Life is too short to not enjoy it,” Koenig said. “I try to be colorful because I want to brighten somebody’s day, even if it is just saying, ‘Hi,’ or making a funny comment.”

As someone who grew up attending Catholic schools all the way through college, Koenig is excited to finally be at one again in his 15th year as an athletic director following three stops at public schools in his home state.

Still, the transition to his new role hasn’t been easy. Koenig has spent the first six months in Green Bay away from his wife, Ellen, and their four children, who remained in suburban Cincinnati.

Koenig would have loved to settle into a new home sooner, but he needed to sell his old home in Ohio first.

“The toughest part has been not going home to them every night and seeing them,” said Koenig, who flew back to Ohio on a handful of occasions last year and made the nine-hour drive once.

“We do a lot of phone calls, a lot of FaceTiming, and that brightens your spirits, but you’re still at home by yourself. It gets kind of lonely after how many years of having your wife and four kids around and now they are not there because I made this decision that this opportunity was important for me and our family to make this move.”

Koenig packed only clothes for his initial move to Green Bay, where he stayed with his younger sister, Sarah Quick, who is the Assistant Director of Communications for the Green Bay Packers.

The siblings were close growing up, separated in age by only 18 months. The past few months have allowed them to reconnect in the opportunities when their busy schedules cross paths since working in sports requires long days and unusual hours.

Quick was the one who encouraged Koenig to apply for the athletic director position at NDA. Their mother lives in Brookfield and two of their older brothers also live in the Milwaukee area, so being closer to family in Wisconsin was a plus in pursuing the opportunity for Koenig.

It was also a chance to return to his Catholic education roots. He attended Catholic schools since kindergarten, graduating from St. Xavier, an all-boys college prep Jesuit high school, before going to college at Xavier University.

“It has been really refreshing to me to be a part of this,” Koenig said. “It makes me excited to come in every day.

“What it has meant to me being here and working with these student-athletes, there is just a different mentality. When kids are following that faith, there is a difference in the way they go about their day and the importance of faith and the importance of education. They bring that structure to the sport they are participating in.”

Koenig embraces playing a part in developing the full potential of students at NDA. “If I can just have a sliver of that time to help build these kids up to be successful for the rest of their lives, that’s what I’m here to try to do,” Koenig said.

Sam Van Straten, NDA 2020

Helping other runners get up to speed Sam Van Straten took an idea last year and started to make it a reality.

The Notre Dame Academy senior founded the Family Runners’ Locker, which provides free clothing, shoes and race vouchers to minority and underprivileged individuals and families in the greater Green Bay area.

Van Straten holds a close connection with the community of runners in the area through running in and volunteering at local races since he was 9 years old. However, after reading local and national race statistics, he noticed the lack of racial and financial diversity in the participants.

“I realized that there are a lot of barriers of entry for people going into running,” Van Straten said. “You have to get clothing, shoes and pay the race entry fee, and it starts to add up really fast to just participate.”

Determined to eliminate those barriers, Van Straten founded the Family Runners’ Locker and started reaching out to organizations in the area for support and donations. His foundation now actively works with the YWCA, Casa ALBA Melanie and the Boys and Girls Club.

To kick off the fundraising, Van Straten created a video and GoFundMe page and launched it in July. In August, he also completed a 100-mile duathlon from the YWCA to the northernmost tip of Door County, Gills Rock.

“The YWCA really does a lot of the operations, so that’s why I did it with an organization--so they can keep it going here while I’m in college,” Van Straten said. “But also, I’d like to take this idea because it’s been very successful here and bring it to wherever I go to college.”

“I did 6 miles of running, then I biked, then I finished the last 6 miles,” Van Straten said. “It’s running and biking, which is something I both enjoy. I also figured it would be good to have the running component there since I’m helping local runners.”

Until then, Van Straten plans on growing the Locker to give more running opportunities to a greater number of people in the community.

The Family Runners’ Locker has set out boxes at local races and sent out flyers to collect money. Van Straten also spoke with local and regional race directors and has received donations of tech clothing for the Locker.

“I got a lot of stuff from the Bellin Run, the Door County Triathlon, and a ton of shoes from Runaway Shoes,” Van Straten said.

Van Straten has raised over $12,500 in goods and monetary donations. He also just held a clothing drive at all of the GRACE schools to collect more children’s clothing.

The funds are kept at the YWCA along with a full closet of clothes that Van Straten has collected.

“Running is something I’ve been doing my entire life,” Van Straten said. “It’s been a great experience for me, and I want other people to have those same opportunities.”

Grant money a ‘blessing’ to further securing school

that we have an effective plan, one that is workable and they can go about their day feeling safe at school, whether it’s students or staff.”

What he presented over the public-address system on the morning of Sept. 5 is an announcement he hoped he would never have to make.

Since receiving about $65,000 through the Wisconsin Department of Justice School Safety Initiative Grant in 2018, NDA has been able to install 3M shatter resistant film on main entrances, an automatic door locking system, an internal security camera system and a digital Visitor Management System (VMS).

With Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith standing in his office, Masarik calmly informed students, faculty and staff the school would be going into lockdown. It was a safety measure being made after a student from a different school made a threat against NDA. The lockdown was lifted later that morning after local law enforcement reviewed the building and ruled out the legitimacy of the threat.

“I just couldn’t be happier with the response of Notre Dame Academy,” said Smith, who was at the school within 2 minutes of the call.

“In fact, when I spoke to the staff at the end of the day just to recap everything that had happened … I said I was so impressed that when I went home after the event was over I called my wife on the phone and said, ‘When our kids are old enough, we have to send them to Notre Dame Academy because they really did a great job.’”

The school’s crisis management plan along with recent safety upgrades to facilities were on full display for Smith to see firsthand Sept. 5.

“To get that kind of validation from the police chief is reassuring,” Masarik said. “It hopefully gives people peace to know

Students, faculty and staff also started wearing ID badges on lanyards this school year. The VMS in the atrium creates a photo ID badge for visitors after they’ve gone through a background check by scanning their driver’s license, making sure everyone who enters and exits the building during a school day is accounted for.

“It has been a blessing,” Masarik said. “When the grants came up we were poised. We had a wish list, so it wasn’t hard for us to figure out what do we need. We knew what we needed.

We still need more, but we got a big chunk of it.”

Having the combination of modernized physical security measures and a strong crisis management plan are things Smith looks for from schools not just as a police chief, but also as a father.

To further secure the building, the school has added an atrium receptionist to staff the entrance after school from 3:30-6 p.m.

“They have a little ways to go before they are old enough to go to school there,” Smith said about his two children, both of whom are under the age of 10. “But I told my wife I was impressed with Notre Dame. Not only with the way everybody acted and reacted to this incident, but just the quality of the kids and spending time with them in the hallways and watching them in their classrooms. The behavior and the willingness to engage somebody they didn’t know was just terrific.”

In addition to the physical upgrades, the grants call for 10 percent of faculty and staff to undergo additional training.

NDA will host threat assessment training on March 20 and adolescent mental health training April 2-3 for about 50 local educators and staff, including over a dozen from Notre Dame Academy.

“We saw that as really important, so we made sure we put money in for additional people to go,” Masarik said. “Ninety-five percent of all school shootings can be prevented. There are a set of signs that are always there that this threat assessment trains us to go through and vet out to try to determine if it is a potential threat.”

As proven by the event on Sept. 5, the crisis management plan is an important tool to ensure the safety of everyone at NDA. “We just continue to pray that through the protection of our blessed Mother that we’re prepared but never have to actually do it,” Masarik said.

IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO THIS

I hear it all day long on most days: “Happy Anniversary!”

Thirty years is a big deal, and as I look around Notre Dame Academy, so much is worthy of celebration.

Through those years, and more, late summer has been my favorite time. The building is pristine with the shining terrazzo floors and the smell of fresh wax lingering in the air.

Come mid-August, I share the bittersweet feelings of students who are returning after a summer without bells and challenging academics. I don’t work alone. My sister is awfully chill and has been keeping the building cool. She’s a lot younger than I am at 18-years-old. She’s growing up and aging quickly, but, compared to mine, her work hours are short.

In August, my hard work is only a few weeks away. With each passing year, I’m increasingly certain that, like summer, my time is coming to an end, too.

For 65 years, my job has been to be quiet, dependable and efficient. But now I’m running out of steam.

Oh, but you should have seen me in 1954 when it all started.

I was hot. My oil burners were top-of-the-line, and there are photographs to prove it. You may not know it, but I’m actually triplets. There were three of us. Unfortunately one was sacrificed for parts in the early 80s when the remaining two of us were converted from oil to gas.

I’ve had some major surgeries over the years: too many to count. This past summer, one of my gas burners was replaced.

I think of it as a heart transplant. A tricky operation since all of my parts are obsolete, and most have to be specially built.

Other parts are sagging a bit, too, but I will spare you the details. I am, as they say, “high maintenance.”

What does the future look like? My heart has been temporarily fixed, but my arteries (maintenance staff calls them pipes) are weakening, and before long, they will not be able to sustain my heart. In fact, they’ve been springing leaks for years now, and they may not last through the winter.

The next guy who comes in here will be more efficient and use computers. I let off steam, but he will use pumps and hot water - not quite as volatile as I am. And he’s going to have to bring along his brothers to be air handlers. I know my sister

won’t work with him, so he’ll have to bring his own. They will be a little more fragile than I am. I hope they can be kept out of the snow and cold. Either way, they won’t last for 65 years, but they’ll probably have good hearts.

I don’t want to give up. Keeping these students warm, helping them to learn and grow is really all that matters to me, but I know my days are numbered. I hope that when the end comes, I am remembered with fondness and for giving everything I had.
