A Message from the President Dear Notre Dame Community, As contemporary people we live in a world filled with images. Some are literal. Some are symbolic. This issue of the NDA Magazine creatively weaves together images of students, alumni and families to help tell the story of Notre Dame Academy in a way that captures our experience of being a community in 2021. NDA is the result of many streams flowing into the current school community of Our Lady of the Bay. The image of lace pictured below comes from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who founded and operated St. Joseph Academy, a predecessor school of NDA. It refers to one of the original works of the sisters in 17th century France as they made and taught other women how to make lace which was a precious commodity at the time. As a symbol the lace serves to help describe our community at NDA as we journey together to God, to the future lives of our students and to our collective future as a school serving the people of Greater Green Bay. In the book “That All May Be One,” Sr. Carol Allan and Martha Malinski describe that: “Lace threads symbolize the relational call of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the call to unifying love that unites neighbor with neighbor, and neighbor with God, without distinction. The spaces in the lace threads signify brokenness and oppression. These spaces also show an openness to the Spirit who lives among all creation.” This past year has been a time of trial for us as a community as we wrestle with different approaches to shared problems. The distances imposed by the pandemic have caused us to examine the threads that bind us to each other. We have also had to explore the spaces between us as we hope for the Spirit to fill us with singular moments of God’s grace to learn, to serve and to love. This issue of the NDA Magazine chronicles parts of our journey. We hope that the images of students’ energy, of faculty and staff care, of alumni achievements, and friends’ support will encourage and engage your way on our shared journey.

Best regards, Thomas J. Kiely, DHL President tkiely@notredameacademy.com NOTRE DAME ACADEMY | WWW.NOTREDAMEACADEMY.COM

Admissions Address

As we celebrate over 125 years of Catholic High School education in Green Bay, Notre Dame Academy adopted a new tagline “Prepares Leaders for College & Life.” Our tradition of Catholic education and preparing leaders for college and life embraces the foundation laid by St. Joseph Academy, Abbot Pennings, Our Lady of Premontre, Central Catholic and St. Norbert High Schools. Today, NDA is a high-caliber educational community that is focused on outstanding learning and creating a lifetime of opportunity for all students. NDA’s curriculum is built upon the foundational belief that faith and reason work together in all learning. We believe in challenging every student’s critical thinking and problem-solving ability. We offer a globally focused education with a leading International Baccalaureate program. Our curriculum is college preparatory and all students are held to high expectations. The Class of 2021 had 569 college acceptances. We encourage students to develop their gifts and talents and contribute meaningfully to their community and the world. Our students are a talented and unique group of individuals from varied geographic, ethnic, economic and religious backgrounds that reflect the population of the Green Bay area. As a school founded within the ministry of the Catholic Church, we are committed to offering tuition assistance, helping to ensure every family receives the best value possible for a Catholic, college preparatory education. NDA is available and accessible to all students due to its tuition assistance programs. Last year, over half of our students received tuition assistance totaling $2.6 million. The investment made at NDA pays off in reduced college costs, a variety of scholarships and increased college acceptance rates. The Class of 2021 was offered $10.8 million in scholarship offers. The NDA experience is one of academic rigor, a welcoming Catholic community and a culture of high expectations. It is our hope that this simple phrase “Prepares Leaders for College & Life” is the essence of what we accomplish collectively as the NDA community.

Wenzel remains a mentor to many long after retiring from professional career Downhill skiing in the winter and sailing in the summer aren’t exactly hobbies one would associate with the average 91-year-old. Then again, Frederick “Fritz” Wenzel is anything but average. A 1948 graduate of St. Norbert High School, Wenzel started as a biochemist in a research lab, graduated to become the executive director of the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute, and eventually the CEO of the entire clinic. He then capped off his 68-year professional career as a professor at several universities, including UW-Stevens Point, CU Denver, Minnesota, Texas Tech and St. Thomas. To say he’s been around the block a few times would be an understatement. He may be retired, but for this 91-year-old, sitting back is simply not an option. What’s his secret to staying young? “Hang around with young people. ... You’ve got to stay on your feet,” Wenzel said. He spends much of his time mentoring college students, teaching young people sailing and even hitting the slopes of downhill skiing. “What I’ve done all my life is mentor young people. ... I just love hanging with them, just being around them. ... The group I ski with are about 40 years younger than I am. I keep up with them pretty well,” he explained. For Wenzel, keeping fit and active is very important, but so is keeping a sharp mind. “I’m learning and keeping up with things, especially in healthcare,” he said. “I want to keep my mind working, as well as my body. I have an artificial shoulder and an artificial knee, so my body’s kind of coming apart a little, but my mind, though, is still pretty decent.” Helping him in this department are Wenzel’s daughters, whom he says provide a steady supply of support and youthful energy. “They’re a big source of conversation,” he said. “We get together at least once or twice a week for dinner, lunch or something and debate whatever seems to be up at that time.”

Frederick Wenzel isn’t letting his age slow him down.

instilled by the priests and his football team, as well as how great the staff was. “I really enjoyed the classes,” he said. “We had a great principal ... and I got a chance to talk to our teachers, in and out of class, because I lived on campus.” By: Nick Bumgardner, NDA 2022

About the Author Nick Bumgardner is a senior at NDA and Editor-in-Chief of The Tritonian, the school newspaper. He loves studying history and politics and is an active member of the Student Senate, Model UN, Academy Band and the baseball team. In his future, he hopes to pursue a career in law.

In the end, Wenzel attributes much of his success in life to his time at St. Norbert High School, citing the values of “discipline” NOTRE DAME ACADEMY | WWW.NOTREDAMEACADEMY.COM

PREMONTRE ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Moran mixes writing and antiques as well-known storyteller Mark Moran has lived by a convincing motto: “Tell a good story.” Throughout his 50year career in journalism, book writing and antique appraisals, the 1971 Premontre High School graduate has done exactly that. As the first of eight children in his family to attend Premontre, Moran enjoyed his English and history classes. “Those two courses were the ones that allowed me to learn how to express myself and collect information on the books that I wrote,” he said. Out of high school, Moran studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a year before starting a job at the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “The great thing about newspaper writing is that you have to learn how to write clearly, quickly and simply,” he said. “(My five years at the Press-Gazette) was really my college education.” After his time in Green Bay, Moran moved to Rochester, Minn., where he became news editor for the Post-Bulletin for 24 years. “The years in Minnesota were where I found my love for antiques, fine art and collectibles,” he explained. “They allowed me to combine my two vocations: writing and antiques.” Moran began writing for antique magazines, as well as writing books on a contract basis. He tracked down collectors for certain items and also captured his own images for his books. In 2011, Moran began working at antique appraisal events, such as the PBS program “Antiques Roadshow,” mostly stationed in the upper Midwest. “I needed to do something with all of this knowledge I had gathered over the years,” he said. “People loved the events, and I was traveling over 30,000 miles a year for them.” In 2020, Moran had planned to retire before COVID-19 put an abrupt halt on his appearances. However, he decided to make one final appearance in 2021 at an event in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. “It’s been a great arc of learning how to be a professional writer to now say ‘It was a great ride,’” he said. Moran’s motto of “Tell a good story,” applies not only to writing, but also to life in general. He encourages people to live a good life and be honest with themselves and the people who love them.

Moran also cherishes the moments in his career when someone realized the item they had was a treasure. “Not necessarily based on monetary value,” he said, “but more the value of the rediscovery of what it is that they remember about an item.” Today, Moran lives in Iola with his wife of 48 years, Catherine, two dogs, Molly and Annie, and a cat, My Boy, that he rescued from his land in 2019. “So much of history is lost,” Moran said of his love of writing. “No one writes notes down about the meaning of things anymore.” By: Joey Bonadonna, NDA 2022

About the Author Joey Bonadonna is a senior at Notre Dame Academy. He is an active participant in many extracurricular activities at NDA, including being the manager of the football and boys basketball teams, performing in the musical program and writing for the school newspaper, The Tritonian. He is also the voice of the Green Bay Blizzard indoor football team, as well as placing second in the state for high school student play-by-play in 2020.

SAINT JOSEPH ACADEMY ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Hussain takes ‘leap of faith’ to fulfill career goals, help more people Debra Hussain was at first a bit nervous about taking the next step in her career. However, the opportunity to become the chief commercial officer of a company was an offer the 1987 St. Joseph Academy alumna couldn’t refuse. “It was the job I've been working my whole career towards,” said Hussain, who became the COO last May for Acacia Pharma Group. “It was a difficult choice to take that leap of faith and say, ‘I can do this. I can realize my career aspirations now.’” Acacia Pharma Group is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company based in Indianapolis and focused on developing and commercializing novel products to improve the care of patients undergoing serious medical treatments such as surgery, invasive procedures or chemotherapy. Having been at the head of a smaller start-up company, Hussain has found herself up to bat in a rather different ball game. “I've been so incredibly challenged in a positive way,” she explained. “It is unbelievably fulfilling to be able to impact more people and a much larger piece of the business.” Helping people is what Hussain has set out to do since her days at SJA. After graduation, she majored in audiology and speech pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “I fell in love with the audiology side of things,” she recalled. “It was this beautiful blend of science and technology and humans.” Hussain earned her master’s in the subject at the University of Memphis and was then plunged headfirst into the “human” part of her field, as she undertook her clinical fellowship at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. “I remember being in grad school, and learning about all these different, really rare diseases, and they were like, ‘You’ll never see these in your career,’” she recalled, “but there I was, at Riley Hospital, and I saw all of them. My favorite part was probably working with the kids. They're so resilient. Just being able to help them, to improve their quality of life, was amazing.”

Though she thoroughly enjoyed her clinical work, Hussain ventured into a different corner of the medical field after “a perfect storm” of changing clinical requirements and a cross-country move. Her family’s new location, South Carolina, was also home to pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly’s headquarters. “The people are amazing at Lilly,” said Hussain, reflecting on her 22 years with the company. “Even though I don't work there any longer, I have nothing but amazing things to say about that company.” Hussain’s career was greatly aided by her experiences “in the trenches” herself. “Understanding what it takes to be on the inner workings of the health care system, on the delivery side, has really paid dividends for me,” she said. “It probably would have helped me very little had I gone straight into marketing Hershey bars or something.” “I flourished within that environment,” Hussain said. “Some really wicked smart people took me under their wing, and I was even able to eventually pay back and help others as well.” Hussain credits many of her current successes to the strong foundations she established at SJA. “I think they had such a high bar for academic success that it translated into me holding that bar high for myself,” she reflected. “That continued into secondary education and has even kept me holding a high bar for myself and for others today, in a very positive way." “I think it’s important that you appreciate the education you received and make sure you make the most of it,” explained Hussain. “Don’t let that be a wasted gift you received.”

Blaney makes big impact in ‘The Big Apple’ Kathleen Blaney, a 2005 Notre Dame Academy alumna, is the director of Disease Control and Emergency Preparedness at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She has worked tirelessly since the beginning of 2020 to help New York City fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. “The most rewarding thing is going to bed each night and waking up each morning and feeling like I’m contributing to getting the city back on its feet, to making New York the place it used to be,” said Blaney, who studied nursing and political science at Marquette University, finding an interest in public health at the intersection of those two fields. “I was most interested in what it meant to provide that level of assessment and care for an entire community,” she said. “And New York is a community of 8.6 million people!” Her NDA education — along with the Canton, Miss., trip and other service opportunities in high school and college — helped Blaney find value in community and holistic care. “Nursing is care for the whole person and public health is care for a whole community,” Blaney explained. “A lot of those values are true of Notre Dame also in terms of caring about not only your academic success but also your spiritual success, what it means to be part of a community. I think that’s ultimately what led me to want to be in a career that provides support to people in need of support. Notre Dame led me down a path to a career that was rooted in service.” After receiving her master’s in public health at Brown University, Blaney came back to Wisconsin to work as a nurse case manager at the AIDS Research Center of Wisconsin, where she spent part of her time in the clinic and part of her time helping to provide social services, such as scheduling appointments. She started at the New York Health Department six years ago and worked in the immunization program for four years. For part of that time, her team worked to stop a measles outbreak in Brooklyn, which got her more involved in emergency response. Soon after, COVID-19 started spreading in the U.S. Blaney acted as the director of the Healthcare System Support Team at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak. She helped make sure everyone had the personal protective equipment and other supplies they needed, figured out where to put alternate

care sites when hospitals were at capacity and did much more to provide support. “The most challenging part is that it’s a ton of work. I feel really lucky to be working in public health at this time, when it’s arguably never been more important,” Blaney said. Family and friends helped her overcome the challenges of 120hour work weeks and the endlessly changing needs of the community around her. She’d also like to thank her coworkers. “What they were able to give to the city and to each other and to the community is really what kept me going each day.” By: Autumn Mayer, NDA 2022

E. Thomas De Wane, O. Praem. 1932-2021

Abbot E. Thomas De Wane Lifetime Achievement Fund In partnership with the De Wane family, alumni of Notre Dame Academy and its legacy schools have proposed an Abbot E. Thomas De Wane Lifetime Achievement Fund to be established at NDA. This fund will be seeded by a generous gift of $25,000 if the donation is matched by alumni and friends of the Abbot and his family. The fund will be available for scholarships, academic growth, the religion department and the greatest need expressed by NDA. The NDA community mourns the passing of Abbot De Wane on July 31, 2021. Abbot De Wane was a 1950 graduate of Central Catholic High School. He lived his life in service to God, the Church, and the scores of people with whom he lived, worked

and served. As educator, administrator, Abbot, parish priest, friend and spiritual companion, Abbot De Wane ministered to people from all portions of society as an example of how to bring us closer to God’s great love of each and every person. We reach out to all alumni of Central Catholic High School, St. Norbert High School, Our Lady of Premontre, St. Joseph Academy, Abbot Pennings and NDA to help us to match this $25,000 challenge. Please send checks payable to Notre Dame Academy and labelled Abbot De Wane Fund to NDA at 610 Maryhill Drive, Green Bay, WI 54303.

Rev. James A. Conard, M.M. 1929-2021 The Notre Dame Academy community mourns the passing of Father James A. Conard, M.M., on April 30, 2021. Rev. Conard was a 1947 Central Catholic High School graduate. He received NDA’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2012 for being an outstanding example of Christ’s love being lived out in the world and being the personification of the Maryknoll Missionary. Upon his ordination in 1956, he was assigned to present day Tanzania in Africa. His work in Africa included starting Kowak clinic and hospital, helping those with AIDS, and the beginning of Kowak Girls Secondary School. Following several decades in Africa, Rev. Conard wrote a memoir title, “A Life in Africa.” He reflected that “Tanzania wasn’t a place that I visited. It was my home. … I’m grateful for the memories. … I’m grateful to God.”

Going behind the scenes with TWO of NDA’s National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists New video equipment providing new experiences for students Harrison James and Alex Prikockis both prefer not to be the center of attention. The Notre Dame Academy seniors would much rather contribute behind the scenes for projects than playing a leading part in front of an audience. However, James and Prikockis knew that wouldn’t be the case on the morning of Sept. 15 as they looked at the script in preparing to produce the video stream each classroom watches at the start of the day. “I got an email the day before saying I would need to be there for the morning announcements, which worked out well because I was already on the camera crew so I was going to be there anyway,” Prikockis said. James added, “In the morning announcements planning sheet it had a thing that said, ‘National Merit announcement.’ … I thought, I know what this is for.” It didn’t take much detective work for the friends to figure out they were both momentarily going to have to step out of their comfort zone as NDA principal Patrick Browne brought them on-screen to congratulate them on being National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists this year. It’s a recognition bestowed upon students who score in the top 1% nationally on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The NDA Class of 2022 produced five National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists this year. Triston Behrend,

Alex Prikockis (left, white shirt) and Harrison James (blue shirt) are two of the students helping to produce the video stream of Notre Dame Academy’s morning announcements. Prikockis and James both were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.

Nick Massabni and Chris Mitchell joined James and Prikockis in earning the honor. “The NMS Semifinalist distinction is an honor that comes with steadfast academic discipline,” NDA college counselor Becky Bain said. “Having five qualifiers this year is exciting – it is NDA's highest in three years. I am very proud of our students.” The recognition is a product of the students’ hard work and focus as the NDA faculty continue to keep students on track to achieving their goals through the pandemic. Just as important as helping students obtain high academic marks is giving them as many real-life experiences as possible. The video equipment NDA purchased this year is giving students like James and Prikockis new ways to shine as they learn. “It’s huge. I think it’s a gamechanger,” said NDA teacher Jen Laaksonen, who oversees the students producing the morning announcements. “It has now taken an aspect of our everyday life and school and put it in the hands of the students. They are the ones controlling us getting on-air and writing scripts. So, the technology is a gamechanger. It turns learning into a hands-on experience.” Neither James nor Prikockis see themselves pursuing a career in video production. Still, they both were equally excited when they heard about the new offerings NDA would have for the 2021-22 academic year. “It’s fun because you get control over it,” James said. “You’re having an influence on something everyone in the school sees. … I prefer to be behind the scenes. I almost prefer that if people don’t even know it’s me. It’s more special in a sense that way.” Prikockis said, “Before this, I really wasn’t that familiar with video stuff at all. I figured it’s just plug this wire here and use this software. I can probably figure it out. But then seeing this big box that has all these switches and is thousands of dollars. I was like, ‘Whoa, there is a lot more to it.’”

Notre Dame Academy senior Nick Massabni (center) is the vice president of Student Outreach

Laaksonen feels the greatest asset James and Prikockis both have – and will carry through in whatever career path they choose – is their attention to detail. “I think what you find for people that don’t want to be in front of a camera is that their powers of observation are enhanced,” she said. James wants to work in the mental health field and is “torn” between doing so through either psychology or psychiatry. Meanwhile, Prikockis enjoys computer programming and feels something relating to computer technology is in his future. NDA is working towards offering more career and real-life opportunities as it aims to continue to set the bar high for its array of talented students. “I do enjoy the environment,” James said about attending NDA. “I think the most important thing for me that I didn’t realize until recently is the academics are pretty far above what else you could get in the area and since I’m trying really hard to achieve as high I can to get into the best college I can go to, Notre Dame is really important to getting me there.” By: Andrew Pekarek, Marketing & Communications Specialist apekarek@notredameacademy.com

A PUBLICATION FOR NOTRE DAME ACADEMY ALUMNI, PARENTS & FRIENDS

Athletics

Supporting Our Athletes & Teams The Notre Dame Academy Athletic Department is embarking on an adventure that will be fun, challenging but at the same time prosperous as we have started an all-sports booster club. This booster club, the Notre Dame Academy Athletic Association (NDA3) is being formed to unite all teams as a community. We will work together to not only grow our financial resources but also to support each other on the playing surfaces. It is time that we work as one solid foundation. We want to grow together and build together, leaving no team behind. This will not take the place of our established formed parent groups and team booster clubs. This will be in addition to those groups. Alumni wishing to contribute to this new endeavor can contact NDA athletic director Matt Koenig at mkoenig@notredameacademy.com or by calling (920) 429-6139. Together, we can do great things!

Submit Your Reunion/Gathering

Pat Moudry Miller, SJA 1965, Don Bablet PHS 1965 and Gene Nelson PHS 1965 organized an informal mini-reunion for the Class of 1965 after the pandemic affected organizing the event in 2020. The event was held at the Fox Harbor Pub & Grill in Green Bay on Aug. 26, 2021. There were approximately 25 alumni who attended the event. The event was successful as alumni reconnected and enjoyed their friendships that began over a half century ago.

To submit a reunion or gathering, please email the details to communications@ notredameacademy.com. Your update will be published on the NDA website and in the next magazine.
