Moving forward DEAR NDA COMMUNITY, For more than 118 years, Notre Dame Academy has been at the forefront of education in northwest Ohio. Today, NDA is widely recognized as the premier school for educating young women in grades 7 through 12 in our community. How did we get to where we are today?

At NDA, we continue to innovate in ways that our founders never could have imagined. It is up to us to look ahead and determine what our students will need as we educate generations of students, one to the next.

We must remain on the cutting edge, offering classes and programs to keep pace with the rigors and demands of our communities at home, and our world at large.

Through our ongoing Empowering Women ~ Transforming Lives Campaign, we are adding to and enhancing the spaces in our building and on our campus to help us shape tomorrow’s leaders. This campaign is only the latest in our 118-year history that has changed the look of our campus with growth and innovation in mind.

Through past initiatives, we have added to campus our gymnasium and Sr. Carol Gregory Hall, and updated and enhanced our Performing Arts Center. We have renewed existing spaces such as Patricia Fitz Commons, which is now used as a classroom or gathering space for students and our NDA community. We converted our former library into the Dr. Suzanne Openlander ‘53 Resource Center and Makerspace to provide new opportunities for learning and creativity. We also added our dance studio to provide a new space for creative expression and movement.

As I look back to consider the answer to this question, I realize that Notre Dame Academy is able to empower young women to be intellectually curious, passionately faith-filled, and socially responsible servant leaders because of the vision of the Sisters of Notre Dame – a vision that always challenges us to look forward.

We frequently refer to our students as women of vision – we believe so strongly in that statement, we use it as the title of this magazine. Our vision at Notre Dame Academy continues to be looking to the future to develop programs, spaces, and educational opportunities that allow our Eagles to soar into the future, while we as a community also continue to move forward.

Learning how to Since the fall of 2011, at the inception of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Notre Dame Academy, nearly 1,000 NDA students have taken IB coursework. Intentional planning by administrators and faculty for two years resulted in the launch of the IB Program.

IB, which is recognized all over the world, has aided NDA students in being accepted by colleges and universities both nationally and internationally.

Nearly 7,000 college course credits have been awarded to NDA alumnae by these colleges and universities. NDA IB graduates have earned several million dollars in scholarships and awards. IB not only offers superior preparation for students to succeed in post-secondary options, but it also serves our students well in their future careers.

The Beginnings of IB at NDA “We were looking for ways to not only help our students excel beyond NDA, but also to help them differentiate themselves when applying to colleges and universities,” says Kim Grilliot, NDA President, on how International Baccalaureate began at NDA. “We wanted our students to have the best chances of being admitted to selective colleges and universities.

We knew our students were critical thinkers and eager to excel locally, nationally, and globally.”

NDA is the only IB World School in northwest Ohio, and one of only 21 IB high school diploma programs in Ohio.

This search led NDA to IB. “As the Sisters of Notre Dame taught us to be intentional about our instruction and choices, we worked with intention when choosing this program,” Mrs. Grilliot explains. “We attended conferences and visited other IB World Schools in Chicago and Indiana to talk with their IB faculty and students.

This helped tremendously in our decision to become an IB World School. We felt IB aligned with both the Sisters of Notre Dame’s rich educational heritage and vision, and the overall mission of NDA.” NDA is the only IB World School in northwest Ohio, and one of only 21 IB high school diploma programs in Ohio.

Students at IB World Schools are given a unique, challenging, and diverse education. They are encouraged to think critically and solve complex problems driving their own learning. Culturally aware, they are able to engage with people in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world. This educational program can lead them to some of the highestranking universities around the world.

IB Coordinator Angie Joseph has implemented and coordinated the NDA program since 2011. “I have been blessed to work and collaborate with inspiring teachers and selfmotivated students for the last ten years at NDA,” she explains.

“Implementing IB has been nothing less than exciting for me, and I’m grateful to our IB Class of 2013, which helped not only establish IB at NDA, but also set the bar for future classes.”

The IB courses at NDA are self-selecting, meaning students can decide whether the IB program is right for them - with the assistance of their teachers and counselors. Students who choose to study within the IB program, whether they pursue the full IB diploma or take individual IB courses, can individualize their IB experience.

“IB classes and subjects are taught the same way all over the world, which helps our students maintain a global connection,” explains Ms. Joseph.

Paving paths to success With ATL, students develop skills that help them “learn how to learn.” ATL skills can be learned and taught, improved with practice, and developed incrementally.

Alumnae Share Collegiate and Career Success IB continues to inspire students beyond their graduation from NDA. The Naqvi sisters have shared how NDA’s IB program prepared them for success in college and beyond.

Rida ‘17 and Saanie ‘18 were both full IB Diploma candidates at NDA. Aylia ‘20 chose to earn IB certificates. Today, they are all studying for careers in different medical fields at the University of Toledo, and Rida is in her residency at the University of Toledo Medical Center. All three sisters agree that IB prepared them well as they work toward their future careers.

“The IB program helped me pave my path to success by empowering me to find my voice and learn how to speak my mind,” says Rida. “IB gave me the opportunity to master critical thinking skills and learn how to ask questions. The knowledge I gained through IB also helped me to build a strong foundation, permitting me to excel in my college courses which allowed me to explore other interests in college.” Rida continues to use IB skills every day to help overcome the obstacles of medical school.

During the pandemic, 100% of NDA’s IB class of 2021 candidates received the IB Diploma, and 90% of NDA’s IB students scored a four or higher.

Other alumnae share similar experiences. Brooke Seelenbinder ‘21 started Michigan State University’s pre-veterinary program as a sophomore after earning 32 college credits through her successful results in IB exams.

“Going to Michigan State with enough credits to be above sophomore status will not only enable me to double major but will also allow me to dive straight into classes in my major,” she shares.

Why IB? IB at NDA fosters critical thinking and growth mindset.

Since the program has been so successful, NDA initiated a Pre-IB class for Junior Academy students, teaching core IB components including Approaches to Learning Skills (ATL).

The five ATL skills are: Thinking, Social, Communication, SelfManagement, and Research.

All of these skills provide a solid foundation for learning independently and with others.

IB is dedicated to building a student’s skills using a holistic approach. Standards of education and student learning styles continue to be more collaborative with project and problem-based learning emphasized. Even as education continues to evolve as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tenets of active, independent, and curious learning continue in the IB classroom.

During the pandemic, 100% of NDA’s IB class of 2021 candidates received the IB Diploma, and 90% of NDA’s IB students scored four or higher, the score at which most colleges begin awarding college credit. The consistency of the IB program continues to evolve and assess the needs of schools and students all over the world allowing for more success given any global circumstances that may arise.

The International Baccalaureate’s (IB) CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service) Project connects to the mission of NDA while aligning with the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

“The CAS Project was one of the reasons that the IB program appealed to NDA 12 years ago,” explained IB Coordinator Angie Joseph. “There are two strong components we see emphasized at NDA: leadership and service.

The CAS Project helps our IB Diploma Candidates master these skills, and empowers our students to see a need in the world and take action to engage others for a positive outcome while also providing a personal challenge and learning.”

All IB Diploma candidates initiate their own projects tied to a need they see in their communities.

These projects challenge students to show initiative, demonstrate perseverance, and develop skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and decision making.

to think about the positive things going on in their lives and share them with others. Art projects, pets, and family pictures were shared on the account with the goal of simply sharing happiness and positivity.

The past few years have not been easy, and the pandemic has changed the ways students are able to complete their CAS Projects.

IB Diploma candidates have been challenged over the past three years with making their projects work without the ability to connect physically. In-person serving and collaborating with others has been difficult, as most organizations adhered to safety protocols to prevent personal interactions or acceptance of donations due to the COVID-19

pandemic. NDA students prevailed and figured out other ways to succeed in serving others!

In 2020, an IB Diploma student recruited students to write letters to help others stay connected.

Renee Marting ‘21 organized a group of students to perform Christmas concerts in the classical style via Zoom to area nursing homes.

Wenfei Zhao ‘22 did not let the pandemic hinder her engagement with her CAS Project when she went home to China this past summer after not seeing her family for two years because of closed borders. While there, she organically found a need that she could fulfill; she assisted people transitioning to and from quarantine. There were travelers who could not navigate the Chinese language while quarantining, and Wenfei was there to help.

The CAS Project philosophy and goals harmoniously match the mission statement of Notre Dame Academy and the foundation of the Sisters of Notre Dame. The project allows students to be intellectually curious and socially responsible servant leaders, committed to being catalysts for the responsible care of all God’s creation.

In the fall of 2016, Notre Dame Academy became the first all-girls school in the state of Ohio to incorporate SportsLeader into its athletic program.

SportsLeader is a Catholic virtue-based formation program for Catholic schools, colleges and parishes that focuses on three pillars: Virtue, Ceremony, and Catholic Identity.

NDA’s Director of Sports Ministry, Mrs. Aimee Parks, works with coaches to incorporate each component in a way that works best for their team.

The public affirmation of both is incredibly moving and allows the team and parents to bond in a way they might not have otherwise.

In describing his first ceremony, NDA Soccer Coach Chip Smith said: “​For me...it was such a real moment...at times we forget about how the emotions like love, loyalty, and pride play such a big part in a team and an athlete’s success.”

Virtue.

Catholic Identity.

104 Catholic virtues are presented on a rotating basis, so each season brings something new. Coaches receive a weekly email with video clips, stories, activities, scripture, saints, and prayers to help them integrate it into their practices/games in various ways. The girls are asked to reflect on things like love, empathy, or persistence and think about how they see those qualities in others and how they can grow in that virtue themselves. We use our own studentathlete in photos and leave a weekly post-it note with a funny or thought-provoking quote on their lockers to help them think about that week’s virtue in another way.

The Catholic Identity pillar brings the gifts of our faith into focus. Pre-season retreats might include seniors leading a rosary, the girls making virtue videos/posters, doing a Stations of The Cross Workout, or hearing from a guest speaker. As we move forward we continually look for creative ways to embrace our Catholic identity.

Ceremony.

During the Jersey Ceremony, each senior has a family member read her a letter of affirmation in front of her team highlighting the virtues they see within her and then present her senior jersey. Later in the season, our seniors return that sentiment by affirming a family member thanking them for their love and support.

NDA parents, student-athletes, and coaches have witnessed many wonderful moments during these ceremonies. We often hear things from parents like… You are the center & strength of our family. You teach me how to be strong. You are such a blessing to us.

Parents might hear…I hope I can be half the parent you are someday. You help me see Christ in others. You are the most selfless person I know.

The SportsLeader program allows our student-athletes not only to bring their skills to the game, but to play with virtues like compassion, humility and vision.

We want them to learn the virtues because we know they will not only use them as a teammate and during competition, but every day of their lives long after they leave Notre Dame Academy.

WOMEN OF VISION ATHLETIC INFLUENCES

Danielle “Dani” Johnson ‘14

Athletics at Notre Dame Academy mean so much more than what happens while wearing an NDA Eagles uniform and actively competing.

Thirst for excellence Soccer has been Danielle “Dani” Johnson’s life since she was just a kid. She played recreation and travel soccer as a youth, and joined NDA’s Varsity Soccer team for all four years of her high school career, leading the Eagles to a Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) title and district championship as a senior. She also was named 2013 TRAC Player of the Year and earned OHSAA D-I All-State First Team honors.

After graduating from NDA, Dani played at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan – one of the top five colleges in the U.S. for women athletes.

While at GVSU, she led her team to the quarterfinals or better of the national tournament in all four seasons, winning the NCAA D-II National Championship in both 2014 and 2015. She was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America Second Team in her senior season, and also was recognized as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.

Next in Dani’s soccer career came coaching.

She spent two years at the University of Findlay as an assistant coach under Jimmy Walker, where her team went 14-3-2 overall and won the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) regular season championship. Then, she joined Walker after his move to Bowling Green State University, where she was head recruiting coordinator and helped coach the Falcons women’s soccer team in 2020 and 2021, including BGSU’s MAC Championship season in spring 2021.

But soccer and athletics have meant so much more in Dani’s life than the time spent on the field. “You go through college, and you work on building your resume and – as an athlete – you realize your sport is all you did. No internships. But you’ve learned to work in a team environment. Your sport *is* your experience, and your resume.”

Dani has taken lessons she learned as THOMASthe PORTER ARCHITECTS part of NDA athletics throughout her adult life.

“The confidence you learn in high school – you feel unstoppable because you have this healthy outlet in your sport. And that continues to propel you forward in life.”

Also helping Dani succeed in life are two key figures from her NDA soccer experience, including Head Coach Chip Smith. “Coach Smith and I are kindred spirits,” says Dani.

“He taught me lessons in leadership and in life.”

Coach Smith has similar praise for Dani.

“Dani has continued to make NDA proud in so many ways, both on and off the field.

Dani’s thirst for excellence helped mold our program into what it is – not only was she one of the best players who has ever played here, Dani was also one of the best leaders and competitors our program has ever seen.

To this day, the legacy she has left for the current players in our program continues to impact them, and all of us, and reminds us of what being a NDA Eagle is really all about.”

Dani also was influenced by Sr. Jenny Zimmerman SND, who at the time worked in Campus Ministry at NDA and also challenged athletes as a strength and conditioning coach. “Sr. Jenny let me be who I needed to be. She’s known me through every peak and valley of my life, and she has been a part of the two most important things in my life – soccer and my faith.”

Since last August, Dani has hit the “reset” button, closing the chapter on soccer at the still-young age of 26. She’s been exploring other options, learning about different careers and how to “create an experience” in a professional role, much as she did for her teams as their coach. “This has been a very difficult transition for me in my life,” she offers. But there’s so much more she plans to do, and NDA athletics helped lay the foundation for a future of myriad successes.

Jayda Worthy ‘14

Paying it forward The story of Jayda Worthy ‘14 exemplifies an NDA alumna who had a most transformative experience through NDA Athletics. After one of the most notable basketball careers in NDA history, she is paying it forward today as a Division I Assistant Basketball coach at her alma mater, Radford University. When Jayda first came to NDA as a freshman, she had yet to discover the gifts inside of her. “If I didn’t attend NDA, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Making that decision to go to NDA made me step way out of my comfort zone.

Coming in as a freshman, I was extremely shy. I didn’t know anyone.”

Jayda explained, “Being a part of the basketball program helped me adjust because I was getting to do something I loved. It helped me find my voice and become a leader. I was put in situations where I had no choice but to step up into that leadership role. It also helped that I had really good older teammates and friends that were good examples.”

After NDA, Jayda continued her basketball career and education at D-I Radford University in Virginia, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, with a minor in Sociology. She went on to be a Graduate Assistant Coach for two years at Valdosta State University in Georgia while earning her Master’s in Higher Education Leadership. Now back at Radford as an Assistant Coach, she is working with young people from all backgrounds, through their own challenges and becoming the best they can be on and off the court.

Jayda credits her time at NDA for helping her to grow and develop the foundation to help others.

“I was truly blessed to be able to attend NDA. It brought people into my life who I am still very close with to this day. NDA gave me a family and I am very grateful for that. Participating in athletics while at NDA taught me how to compete and accountability - we competed with the best.

I was part of many championships and state appearances. Being part of that winning culture - we were held to a higher standard.

Everyone was watching, and it made you stay accountable for how you carried yourself, your behaviors, it made sure you were being the best you that you could possibly be. I am grateful for learning these things while at NDA.”

She shared that there were so many special people that helped her along the way at NDA to find her confidence and support her.

“Coach Galloway and Coach Hicks for sure encouraged me – and still do to this day.

I am very grateful for them! Mrs. G (Gallaher), Ms. Denos, and Mrs. Clark were always there in your corner.” And now Jayda is the one whom her student-athletes look to for that support, direction and motivation they need in life, as she pays forward to others the gifts she discovered within herself through NDA.

WOMEN OF VISION PERFORMING ARTS INFLUENCES

Caitlyn Scott ‘08

Over the years, the NDA Arts program has given so many students a means to express and develop their creativity

Life is a journey In softball, when the pitcher throws you a curveball, you may have to change your stance, adjust your angle, or even change your plan altogether. In Caitlyn Scott’s case, when life threw a curveball, she had to do exactly that, and she ended up hitting the ball out of the park.

“My career track completely changed junior year when I got injured playing softball. If I never participated in fall musical or theater classes, I would have majored in accounting,” she shared.

Caitlyn is now a lead Shipboard Audio Technician for Carnival Cruise Lines, and makes sure that multiple shows performing on the ship run seamlessly.

“While I was at NDA, I participated in speech & drama, voice and other performing arts classes. My freshman year, I was a spot operator for Seussical: The Musical. Sophomore year, I was in the chorus for 42nd Street.” When her softball injury occurred and she was no longer able to play, it was devastating.

However, she suddenly had a void to fill, and wanted to stay involved in an activity she enjoyed.

“My junior year, I was Student Director and Audio Technician for Thoroughly Modern Millie.” She loved it, and most of all, found she was skilled in technical work, running the lights and the audio.

“Then senior year, I was Student Director and Lighting Designer/ Operator for Annie Get Your Gun.

I also ran audio for almost everything in the theater. My senior project was shadowing at the Valentine Theatre.”

Because of this experience as Student Director, Caitlyn chose to pursue a major in theater design and production with an emphasis in sound design from the University of Cincinnati.

“My mentors at NDA supported me on my journey. They were always there for me and continue to support me.”

Caitlyn shares what she has learned in looking back: “One life lesson I learned is that not everything is planned. Things happen that sometimes aren’t in my control, and I can’t take everything personally.

It is incredibly hard to go into a field that is male dominant. I had to prove myself more times than any of my male coworkers.

As soon as I proved that I was capable of not only running audio but having incredible knowledge, work became completely different.”

In the time that Caitlyn was at NDA, the demand for and access to resources for those interested in pursuing production were limited, and she had to work harder to get ahead with those students coming to UC from more technically-focused programs. Nowadays, with career opportunities in production growing at a fast pace, that will all change, with the upcoming enhancements in performing arts and music technology facilities, thanks to the Empowering Women~Transforming Lives campaign.

Caitlyn credits her mentors at NDA who believed in her and supported her on her journey. “Mrs. Trish Sanders was always my biggest supporter and ultimately pushed my interest into audio. Mrs. Jean Walker was always there for me, in figuring out what I wanted to do behind the scenes. Both continuously supported me in my choice to go to school for production.”

April in New York

When April first began her journey at Notre Dame Academy, she arrived already knowing her dream was to be a professional singer. Although everyone had told her how hard it would be, she made the decision to be steadfast and all the more focused. She prepared herself academically with the opportunities available at NDA, and also with other activities to build a firm foundation for her future in music.

“Arts wise, I participated in the musical every year, dance team, choir, and music technology,” April explained.

She also completed two years of IB Theatre Arts, preparing her well for her major.

What especially helped was the encouragement she received from teacher and choir director Amy Johns, who took the time to encourage April to seek opportunities outside of NDA to prepare her for what she would need to learn for a professional career in performing. April shared, “I owe Mrs. Johns so much for giving me many valuable musical experiences outside of school, such as being accepted into All-National Choir and getting to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, along with singing with the Toledo Symphony. She took me under her wing and I will be forever grateful for her kindness!”

The lights go down, the rasp of the snare drum and cymbal begin a lively beat, the first few chords play across the shiny ivory keys, as the bass guitar joins in the key of C. A spotlight shines down on a microphone, where April Varner ‘15 is standing and waiting. And as she smiles, her smooth, classicallytrained, energetic voice begins to entertain the room for a night of beautiful music at a small jazz club in New York City.

“I FOUND C OMFORT I N BE I NG MYSE LF A ND C HOSE TO PURSUE MY DREAM S.” Because of Mrs. Johns’ encouragement to join the All-National Choir, April was able to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City her sophomore year, further developing her portfolio for college. “In my undergrad, I was a member of Indiana University’s Grammy-nominated show choir, the ‘Singing Hoosiers.’ We performed all genres of music, and I was also a Varsity Dancer within the ensemble. My junior year, I was the director of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble within Singing Hoosiers.”

April resides in New York City where she is actively arranging, composing, and performing at jazz clubs around Manhattan. Concurrently, she is pursuing her master’s degree in Jazz Voice at the Manhattan School of Music.

During the pandemic, she began teaching music virtually, and found that it’s something she enjoys and plans on pursuing in the future.

And as the music at the small jazz club in NYC comes to a close, and the spotlight fades, April takes a bow, and is greeted with an ovation from all of the NDA community, who look forward to more of her music in the future.

We kicked off NDA’s Empowering Women ~Transforming Lives Campaign in the fall of 2019. We could not pass up the opportunity to help change and improve the Notre Dame Academy that we knew as former students.

The Campaign Committee was formed to run with the initial goal of raising $5 million. By April 2021, we had already surpassed that initial goal due to the overwhelming generosity of our donors and supporters.

When the Campaign went public in the fall of 2021, the Campaign Committee and Board of Trustees made the decision to increase the goal to $7 million, to keep up with the anticipated rising costs of materials and construction. As of the date of this publication, we are so pleased to report that we have raised more than $7.5 million for Notre Dame Academy!

Thank you to all of our supporters and donors who have already contributed to Empowering Women~Transforming Lives. We could not have done this without each and every one of you. Please know that your gifts and pledges will support many enhancements and updates to Notre Dame Academy’s building, facilities and campus – and will help grow and maintain NDA’s Endowment, and support our many young women of vision with scholarships and financial assistance.

Remembering Dr. Lisa Lucilio

Power to the People The entire Notre Dame Academy community was saddened by the passing of Dr. Lisa Lucilio in March. A beloved and dedicated teacher who was an advocate for women’s education and empowerment, “Dr. L” also known as “Ms. L”, had been working in ministry at NDA for 37 years as a Social Studies teacher.

Alumnae mourning her passing particularly noted the impact her Psychology and Women’s Studies courses had on their lives. Many said that Dr. Lucilio’s Psychology course inspired them to become psychologists. Others spoke to her passion for empowering women all over the world. Most of all, they remember how she helped them to think more critically and be willing to ask more questions.

Dr. Lucilio also coached track and shot put in the 90s, and has supported NDA’s athletic department for many years, working the clock and gate. She also played a role in production details for several NDA musicals for many years under director Gloria (Athans) Moulopoulos ‘48. She always loved to hear how the musical was going each year and commiserated with the long hours and hard work each group put into it!

She was known to ask her colleagues about how they were doing on a daily basis, and was especially interested when her students provided input and discussion during her courses.

She embraced the idea of living by a credo, and hers was marked by immense caring, generosity, and laughter. Lisa’s commitment to “Power to the People” will live on in those she inspired to attend lectures, read great books, and work for the greater good.

Mad for On Friday, February 25, Notre Dame Academy welcomed more than 300 in-person and virtual guests at the Mad for Plaid Gala. The event raised more than $235,000 that evening for tuition assistance.

The gala this year was brought back to NDA, where students served appetizers and a sitdown dinner. Our gala emcee was Gail (Vascik) Hogan ‘74 and our student speaker was Riley Higgins ‘24. The evening included a Silent Auction, $5,000 Cash Raffle and the 2022 Alumnae Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Sr. Mary Suzette Fisher SND ‘67 received the Professional Achievement Award. For the past 30 years, Sr. Suzette has dedicated her life to helping families understand and cope with issues connected with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). She is a leader in the FASD field and is highly respected locally, as well as throughout the state and nationally. Little did she know in 1992 as she co-founded Double ARC, an organization sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame, that her efforts would be so far-reaching.

Sr. Suzette regularly gives presentations at local, state, and national conferences for educators, parents, social service providers, and medical and allied professionals. She provides education, intervention, and advocacy services for clients in school, judicial, and social service settings.

Her work at the Monroe Street Neighborhood Center (MSNC), where she is Executive Director, is what she is most proud of. She led a struggling organization with only two programs and built a community resource center with over 10 programs. Developing children’s programs as well as programs for seniors has helped the community where the center is an anchor.

In 2020, Clara led MSNC’s tiny home project called Bluff Street Village. This program allows those living below the poverty level to achieve home ownership.

The homes are 400 square feet each, and the cost of leasing is $1 per square foot.

After seven years, the occupant will own the home. This project’s goal is to build 24 homes without using any government funds; all homes will be built entirely with donations and revenue from fundraising events. Clara has always been one to speak up, engage with, and work for others.

She’s a leader who puts the needs of others first.

Notre Dame Academy was honored to host a naturalization ceremony for 24 new U.S. citizens. Honorable Judge Jack Zouhary, U.S. District Court; Judge Myron C. Duhart, State Court of Appeals; and Mrs.Tolani Afolabi, NDA Vice President of Advancement, herself a naturalized U.S. citizen, all spoke.

National Merit Scholar Mary Grzybowski ‘22 was named a National Merit Semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

She scored in the top 1% of all U.S. high school students who took the 2020 PSAT. Mary is interested in STEM and the bridge between art and science. Mary, an IB student is President of NDA’s Maker Club and a member of the National Art Honor Society as well as Co-Captain of NDA’s Quiz Bowl Team. She is applying to Carnegie Mellon, University of Michigan, and The Ohio State University where she plans to major in engineering and foreign languages.

5 Evans Scholars Leading the Way! Five seniors were selected for the prestigious Evans Scholarship, and NDA leads the nation in the number of women Evans Scholars chosen this year. In total, these NDA seniors will receive $600,000 in college scholarships. Lauren Boyd, Parker Boyd, Tamara Salameh, Chelsea Fall, and Caylee Bunker were chosen to receive the scholarship, which pays all tuition, room and board for all four years of college. The recipients are planning to attend The Ohio State University, Miami University (Ohio), or Northwestern University. In total, 19 NDA students have been awarded the scholarship over the years.

Speech and Debate Team The NDA Speech and Debate Team has 40 students from grades 7-12 who have competed virtually and in person this season. Students have competed locally and regionally, and 11 competed in the Ohio Speech and Debate Association (OSDA) State Tournament! NDA Mardi Gras!

Food, Fun, Friends The sophomore class did an amazing job this year hosting the annual Mardi Gras celebration. There was food, games, music and of course lots and lots of baskets! Proceeds benefit SND of Papua New Guinea and the Aurora Project.

On March 22nd, Notre Dame Academy announced that the majority of our Eagle sports will be competing in the Detroit-based Catholic High School League (CHSL) starting in the fall of the 20232024 school year. Notre Dame Academy, Central Catholic High School, St. John’s Jesuit High School & Academy, St. Francis deSales School, and St. Ursula Academy all will be joining the CHSL. “We are excited to be joining a conference with like-minded schools,” says NDA Athletic Director Gary Snyder. “With the TRAC (Three Rivers Athletic Conference) ending after the 22-23 school year, we wanted to find the best opportunity for as many sports teams that we could. The five Toledo Catholic schools worked together to explore all options, and the CHSL is the best option available to our schools.”

The addition of the five Toledo Catholic schools increases the CHSL membership to 32 total Catholic and private schools. CHSL sports are broken out into divisions and NDA teams will initially be placed in the top division for each CHSL sport that NDA participates in.

Student-Athletes Committing to College Athletics

The NDA sports that will be joining the CHSL beginning with the fall of the 23-24 school year are basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, softball, track & field, and volleyball. Michigan and Ohio have different seasons of competition for soccer, swimming & diving, and tennis, so those sports will not be a part of the CHSL. The CHSL does not presently include gymnastics as a league sport. NDA’s swimming & diving program presently competes in the Northwest Ohio Aquatic Conference and will remain a member of that conference. Gymnastics will host the Toledo Cup starting with the 23-24 school year for local schools with gymnastics teams that are not part of a conference. NDA is continuing to work on conference and/or regular season tournament options and opportunities for soccer and tennis with Ohio schools.

NDA joins the Catholic High School League

NDA will remain a member of the OHSAA, and all 11 NDA varsity sports will continue to compete in their respective OHSAA tournaments. NDA will also continue to follow OHSAA eligibility rules. Joining the CHSL does not have an impact on our current NDA club sports of broomball, equestrian, rowing, and indoor track & field, nor 7th & 8th grade sports that will continue to compete in the Diocese of Toledo’s CYO program.

The CHSL has regular season league contests as well as championship contests or tournaments for each of the sports we will be participating in. The CHSL is working with the Toledo schools to help limit travel through single round-robin league play. Additional details and schedules will be released as we get closer to the 2023-24 school year. Honoring Art

CelebratingArt Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Exhibition at Fort Wayne Museum of Art NDA artists continue to boldly impress art jurors, local governments and museums this year. In the Regional Art and Writing Exhibition, Anna Hitt ‘24 won a Gold Key, was eligible for National jurying in New York, and her artwork was purchased by the museum.

There were 55 works created by NDA student artists accepted in the December 2021 Celebrating Art Publication; 11 received High Merit Honors. There were 17 works accepted in the August 2021 publication; two received High Merit Honors. NDA is a top ranking school having among the highest number of accepted students for Celebrating Arts Publications. Not only one, but two NDA artists were accepted into the National Art Honor Society/National Junior Art Honor Society Juried Exhibition and they are only sophomores.

This is only the second time in NDA history that NDA artists have been accepted.

Mary Frances “Fran” (Kaczmarek) Hummel ‘64 shares the following story: “I have been volunteering with the Charleston Parks Conservancy since 2007. We are a nonprofit renovating Charleston Parks for families and also maintaining three Community Gardens where we grow and harvest produce for local food banks and other agencies assisting people needing fresh food. We recently hired three new horticulturists.

A few months ago, I was working with one of them, and in conversation asked her where she was from. She said Toledo, Ohio. So, I said where did you go to high school? She said NDA! She is Sara Brunner ‘15. What a coincidence to find a fellow alum working side by side with me in Charleston! To add to the story, at Christmas, I made a wreath for one of my classmates, Linda (Guitteau) Judson ‘64, and was going to ship it to her. Sara was going back to Toledo for the holidays and kindly offered to deliver it to Linda. They met in Toledo and now we are all connected.

The NDA spirit is alive and well and continues to grow.”

What can alumnae do?

Back in the first summer of COVID, my NDA class of 1975 would have celebrated its 45th reunion. Although I hadn’t attended many of our reunions, I had planned to attend this one.

But with so much unknown about COVID in 2020, our reunion was canceled.

What was odd about our reunion that year is that I was the one trying to organize it. I’d never been a class officer and, as one of five Black students in my class, I can’t say I always felt as though I fit in. I can’t remember ever seeing a Black alumnae revisiting the school or even having a breadth of diverse books in the library. But there’s something about NDA, isn’t there? There’s something that draws us in, and keeps us.

It makes me think about today’s students, and how we can support them.

When my classmate, Clara (Conner) Petty ‘75, was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, my commitment to the school grew a bit more. I’ve been reaching out to the Black alumnae I can find on Facebook to form an alumnae group. The students, particularly our Black girls, need us. We’re some of the only ones to whom they can relate on many issues, and who can support them in the process.

I’m looking for you my sisters! And, so are our girls.

Vontyna (Liggins) Smith ‘92 has earned her PhD from Walden University in Health/ Health Care Administration and Management. Graduation was held virtually in January 2022. Vontyna is the Director of Customer Success with Q-Centrix.

Maureen Wilcheck ‘94 has been selected as one of six Mobile Patrol Officers to implement safety and security policies throughout all Lucas Metropolitan Housing (LMH) properties located within Lucas County, Ohio.

Lydia Marentette ‘16 graduated from the University of Toledo with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She is currently studying in UToledo’s public administration master’s program and working in the Department of Neighborhoods for the City of Toledo.

Elaine Westphal ‘12 graduated from the University of Miami School of Law, and she was inducted into the Florida Bar in October 2021, at the Supreme Court of Florida. She recently accepted a position as a public defender in Fort Myers, and her job will deal with zealously advocating for and on behalf of indigent clients charged with a crime. Elaine is thankful for the guidance she received from her professors, counselors, and soccer coaches while she was at NDA.

Ray’Chel Wilson ‘15 has launched her career as a financial literacy educator and released a book series to educate young professionals on financial literacy and bridge the racial wealth gap, especially among students of color.

Honored as one of the top 20 Under 2 teachers across the state of Oklahoma for excelling on the front lines of education, Ray’Chel has found educating people of color about holistic financial wellness to be a central part of her mission.

After she achieved the financial milestone of paying off her undergraduate student loans (by leveraging cryptocurrency profits), she became certified through the National Financial Educators Council and created her company, Raise the Bar Investments. She is the published author of Black Wealth Freedom, a 3-part workbook series that is the foundation to next-generation wealth building. Ray’Chel has been featured on the Pursue Excellence digital show as an entrepreneur spotlight, as well as the Frederiq Effect podcast for National Black Business Month.

Mariah Copeland ‘17 played in her final basketball game with the University of Toledo Lady Rockets last March. During her career at UToledo, she appeared in 50+ games. In 11 games during her senior season, she shot 54% from beyond the 3-point arc.

addy Vesoulis ‘18 will be fulfilling a lifelong dream - she will be attending The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, working toward earning her DVM in the class of 2026. Maddy graduates from OSU with her undergraduate degree this spring.

Ava George ‘19 is in her third year at the Ohio State University studying early childhood education. She is also working in childcare at St. Agatha Catholic School. Ava shares, “There are many days when I dearly miss being at NDA. As I look back, I can’t help but thank God for every daily blessing given to me at NDA - my Catholic faith, my friends, my prep for college, my incredible experiences in Theatre and Student Council! All in all, I’ve been doing very well and look forward to supporting NDA as long as I live!”

Sarah Watson ‘19 has been named Editor-in-Chief of The Georgetown Voice magazine. She is in her junior year at Georgetown University, in the Walsh School of Foreign Service.

Cadet Hannah Cook ‘20 came back to NDA to speak to students at a lunchtime Dine & Do about the Air Force ROTC program at Bowling Green State University.

Beverly Domalski Legacy ‘48

How great thou art

While a student at NDA, Beverly Domalski ‘48 discovered a passion for the arts, and dedicated her life to sharing her passion with as many people as possible. During her senior year, Beverly and five of her classmates - Joanne (Seidel) Brell, Mary Frances (Dolan) Fenady, Mary Ann Mermer, Dorothy Mescher, and Patricia Flint - painted a mural titled, “Through Him, With Him and In Him.” Under the direction of their teacher, Sr. Mary Genevra, SND, they captured the essence of the Catholic Christian life in all its dimensions.

The mural spans 12 feet and remains displayed prominently in the hallway between NDA’s prayer garden and chapel.

Students pass it daily, and can reflect on the symbolism in Beverly’s details. The artwork includes images of processions towards an altar bearing gifts with saints hovering above, and charitable ministries to which all believers are called. Central to the painting is a depiction of Christian family life. The Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary symbolize God’s love welcoming us.

“Beverly’s Catholic faith was so important to her. She never missed a Mass, and even when she would travel, she always found a church. She was a very faith-filled woman,” shared her cousin, NDA alumna Kim (Carollo) Porter ‘78.

After graduating from NDA, Beverly earned a graduate degree in studio art and began a long career in education, teaching in and directing art programs for Toledo Public Schools and the Diocese of Toledo. She taught art workshops at the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Botanical Garden, the University of Toledo, and Lourdes University.

She was known for her selfless energy and compassion, and her lifelong work to spread a love and appreciation of the arts to all those she encountered.

Beverly held NDA close to her heart and stayed in touch over the years. She became one of NDA’s biggest supporters, generously contributing to scholarship aid for those who needed tuition assistance. In the years before her recent passing, she made provisions in her estate to support NDA’s mission and future with a planned gift. NDA honored Beverly as a member of The Sunflower Society - a society of generous donors who plan a gift to NDA in their will.

“Beverly was humble, selfless, and described herself as a depression-era child. She was frugal with her money, and would deny herself so that she could do more for others.

She was so proud of her NDA education, and she wanted others to have the same opportunities,” explained Kim. Upon Beverly’s passing in April 2021, The Beverly Ann Domalski ’48 Endowed Scholarship was created thanks to her planned gift, and will provide financial assistance in perpetuity for students to attend NDA.
