2020-2021 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Into the 21st Century DEAR NDA FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS, he concept of Empowering Women ~ Transforming Lives has been at the forefront of the Sisters of Notre Dame’s mission since the beginning of their ministry. Each year, we set out to create a learning environment for 650 young women to prepare them to go out into the world and empower them to be Bold, Brilliant, Beautiful and Blessed in their lives.

To accomplish this great task, we need to keep renewing the educational experience that we offer. Our bold plan forward is aptly titled, Empowering Women ~ Transforming Lives: The Campaign for Notre Dame Academy, and sets forth to take NDA into the 21st century.

As we look back on the 2020-21 fiscal year, I am pleased to report that we have had another successful year at NDA. With all of the challenges that came our way, we rose up stronger and more committed than ever to our mission of empowering our students to be intellectually curious, passionately faith-filled, and socially responsible servant leaders.

And now, as we look to the future, our Empowering Women ~ Transforming Lives campaign will ensure Notre Dame Academy is able to offer the best facilities, programs, and support our students need to become the women of vision they strive to be. Central to this campaign are four key areas of great need: increasing the endowment for financial aid, a new front entrance that better meets the space and security needs of the 21st century, STEM classroom enhancements, and athletic field enhancements. By acting upon these four initiatives, we will equip our students with the best facilities and opportunities to succeed and to lead in college, in their careers, and in life.

We are launching the public phase of Empowering Women ~ Transforming Lives with significant momentum. Thanks to the generosity of many alumnae, parents – both current and of alumnae – and community supporters, we have been able to raise over 90% of our $7 million goal for these improvements.

The Mady Niles Rowing Scholarship

Fly High Mady

When Matt and Nicole McIntire and Troy Niles faced the heartbreak of losing their daughter, Mady Niles, in an automobile accident in April of 2020, at the end of her junior year at NDA, they made a decision right away to try to make good out of the bad.

“We didn’t know how that would look, or what it would take, but we put that idea on our hearts.”

Mady started at NDA after dealing with anxiety and panic attacks at school in junior high. Matt and Nicole were concerned that those attacks might continue into high school. But during her freshman year, Mady joined five clubs and the rowing team. “We didn’t deny her the opportunities, but we were skeptical because of her anxiety. We were wrong! NDA transformed Mady into a kind and confident young woman.”

Mady flourished right away at NDA, and the camaraderie and discipline she learned from rowing in particular carried through in all of her other activities. Mady continued to grow by running for and being elected President of her sophomore class.

After Mady passed away, Matt and Nicole created Mady’s Garden on their nine-acre property in Temperance.

They had learned that Mady served as a mentor to a lot of people from schools all over the area. “We knew we had to create a special place where they could go and feel close to Mady. We keep Mady’s Garden open to the public, and we think it has done what it was created to do.”

Once Mady’s Garden was established, the McIntires thought they would start a charity in Mady’s name, but they found themselves without the spiritual, physical, and emotional energy to pull it off at that time. “It was just too difficult to do so soon after Mady left us.

But then – we got incredible news.”

Matt and Nicole learned that the NDA senior class had created the Mady Niles Rowing Scholarship as part of their senior class giving campaign. The couple pledged to match whatever amount the girls raised, and they ended up collecting more than $5,000 in total.

But they knew that to begin offering rowing scholarships to students, the endowment would need to be funded with a minimum of $25,000.

To quickly raise funds to support Mady’s endowment, Matt and Nicole got started on planning a golf outing in Mady’s memory.

“We thought it would take forever to raise that amount, and we wanted girls who knew Mady to be possible recipients of the funds.” But they were proven wrong – and were able to present NDA with a check for $20,000 from the proceeds raised through the golf outing – thus fully funding Mady’s endowment. “Amazing!”

The McIntires plan to host the golf outing annually in Mady’s memory so they can continue to support her scholarship fund and NDA in as many ways as possible.

“After Mady passed away, devastation and brokenness followed for us. But we were surrounded by amazing people who carried us through those early months. Kim Grilliot and Tolani Afolabi came to the house to console us and bring us some NDA swag.

We latched on to them, and they didn’t mind.

There are too many examples of the amazing support that NDA has shown for Mady and the people who loved her. That is why NDA will ALWAYS be special to us.”

Service Leadership Award

Professional Achievement Award

This award honors alumnae of Notre Dame Academy who have answered the call of Christian service. These are women who recognize and demonstrate use of their Godgiven gifts of time, talent, or treasure through exemplary gospel service on a local, national, or international scale.

This award recognizes achievement of an exceptional nature in any field or vocation.

An alumna’s achievements reflect the excellence and values inherent in the mission of Notre Dame Academy and demonstrate a benefit to the larger community.

Sr. Pam was nominated by fellow Sisters of Notre Dame and NDA alumnae Sr. Joanne Mary Frania ’57 and Sr. Constance Marie Suchala ‘66.

Sr. Pam’s ministry led her to teaching, and she was a math teacher at NDA among other schools for 22 years of her life. But it was her life of service after her formal teaching career that was highlighted in her Hall of Fame nomination.

Modeling her life after Jesus’s, Sr. Pam always sought out “the preferred, the poor.” She tutored residents of the Cherry Street Mission and helped them earn a GED. She rushed to New Orleans to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina – with no supplies, no idea what was needed, and knowing no one there. She was convinced she needed to be there to offer whatever help she could. Shortly before she died on June 9, 2020, she completed online training and was set to begin as a contact tracer for COVID-19 patients.

She also spent several years working at the South Texas Human Rights Center, where she collaborated with many organizations to end death and suffering among migrants. She visited detention centers scattered throughout the Rio Grande Valley and prayed and encouraged many women and children there. She worked on both sides of the border, making friends with those who were waiting for permission to enter the United States, volunteering at shelters and humanitarian centers tutoring women and children in English, and working as an immigration advocate through the Catholic Legal Immigration Network to assist migrants with obtaining their U.S. citizenship.

“She was tireless in living the mission of Notre Dame Academy and the mission of creating socially responsible servant leaders,” said Sr. Constance. Sr. Pam herself once told a fellow Sister that she would be “a voice for those experiencing injustices” and that she “would not be afraid to speak out!” Whether writing her congressional representatives, speaking at social justice events, attending vigils, or protesting, Sr. Pam always used her voice to speak on behalf of the marginalized.

Mary, who was nominated by her classmate Judy (Tremmel) Reiter ’74 exemplifies these characteristics. She served her community as the Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen Northwest Ohio Affiliate for 13 years, and was named the State Executive Director with Susan G. Komen in October 2020. In her new role, Mary oversees four markets in two states and is responsible for a $4 million annual budget – all the while striving to meet the organization’s commitment to its vision of a world without breast cancer.

Prior to working with Susan G. Komen, Mary’s career included stops at the Sight Center of Northwest Ohio, National Emergency Services, area hospitals and schools, and time performing freelance consulting services. Mary earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Bowling Green State University, where she focused on public relations and minored in marketing.

As her friend Judy stated in the letter she submitted to nominate Mary: “Mary has dedicated her life to learning, leading, and serving.”

Mary is also a member of the Rotary Club of Toledo, the Sylvania Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves on Sylvania City Council, where she has been President of Council since 2010.

She is a past president of both the Junior League of Toledo and of Women in Communications, and also a previous board chairperson of the Notre Dame Academy Board of Trustees.
