A born leader.

President’s Report 2021-2022

Growing and thriving.

DEAR NDA FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

mpowering Women and Transforming Lives (EWTL) is more than just the name of the comprehensive Campaign we recently concluded at Notre Dame Academy. It’s what we aim to do at NDA, each and every day. And it has been at the forefront of the Sisters of Notre Dame’s mission since the beginning of their ministry.

We empower our young women of vision at NDA to be Bold, Brilliant, Beautiful, and Blessed. But we can’t do it without you, and your support.

As we reflect on the 2021-22 fiscal year, I am pleased to share the results of our EWTL Campaign. We closed the Campaign on June 30, 2022, after raising a total of $7.8 million in gifts and pledges, surpassing our initial goal of $7 million. Not only will these funds allow us to continue to offer the best facilities, programs, and opportunities but they also will help us fulfill our mission and empower our students to be intellectually curious, passionately faith-filled, and socially responsible servant leaders.

We look forward to sharing with you the upgrades and enhancements to our campus and our facilities over the next few years. As we proceed with these updates, we also will be embarking on a five-year strategic plan for the future of Notre Dame Academy. Please keep our community in your prayers – that our steering committee will make faithful recommendations so NDA can grow and thrive in perpetuity.

Again, thank you for your support of Notre Dame Academy. We would not be where we are today without your generous gifts and thoughtful prayers. Blessings,

2021-2022/PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Empowering Women and Transforming Lives
is what we aim to do at NDA, each and every day.

When Amani Foster ’22 was a young girl – the youngest of six – her family wasn’t able to afford a car – so they walked everywhere they needed to go. If they were headed to Franklin Park Mall or another west Toledo destination, they would often cut through the Sisters of Notre Dame property at the corner of Sylvania and Secor Roads, meandering through the orchard and passing by Notre Dame Academy.

“I used to try to look in the big windows and would think to myself – I just want to be in there,” shares Amani. “I could experience NDA from the outside – but I wanted to be on the inside.”

When Amani was a high school freshman, the cost of attending NDA remained out of reach. But with tuition assistance available to her through Notre Dame Academy’s endowment and scholarships, as well as Ohio’s EdChoice Scholarship, she finally was able to start at NDA as a sophomore.

“When I got to NDA, I went head first into honors, AP everything,” she explains. “It was such a leap to come here, I needed to get everything I could out of it. And I knew I could do it.”

At first, Amani felt a lot of pressure. “I felt behind – everyone was so focused, and it was a shock. But my family had done so much to get me here, so I learned. I learned how to make time for studying, and different ways to study. I saw that everything had a structure and a process – and following that process would prepare me for college, for work, and for life.”

One of Amani’s favorite classes at NDA was her IB Literature class, taught by Mrs. Kelly Wood in Year 1, and Ms. Lindsay Sutton in Year 2. “I enjoyed doing the reading, and learned how to express my opinions – Ms. Sutton really invited discussion. It was the best way to get to know my classmates, too.”

While at NDA, Amani also showed she was a born leader. She initiated the Anti-Racism Coalition at NDA, and also suggested that Executive Student Council add an Inclusion Cabinet Member – and then was the first student to serve in that position.

Outside of NDA, she and two fellow students started the Toledo chapter of March for Our Lives following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in 2018 to push for gun legislation and gun control, focusing on working for social justice.

At the start of her senior year, Amani applied to more than 23 colleges across the country, but she had her sights set on one school in particular – Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. “Vanderbilt only has an 11 percent acceptance rate, and they had even fewer open spots this year,” shares Amani. But her hard work was paying off – because not only was Amani accepted, shealso received a scholarship that would provide her with full tuition, housing, food, and insurance for all four years!

Amani also earned the Paul Nelson Randolph Abundant Life Scholarship, which is awarded to graduating seniors to help create a culture of racial equity in higher education. This Foundation was created by Ariyana (Randolph) Miles ’99 and her mother, Vanessa, in the memory of her father, Paul, who passed away in 2020.

Amani plans to major in political science and eventually attend law school to give herself an abundance of options for the future. “I’m excited to start over at Vanderbilt – to meet new people from different races, cultures, religions and ideologies,” she says, “But most of all, I want to excel – and I want to be around people who are excelling – the same as I experienced at NDA.”

I needed to get everything I could out of it.”

The Empowering Women~Transforming Lives campaign saw many companies step up and answer the call to bolster NDA’s future.

NDA is proud to have established strong relationships with businesses that believe in NDA and want to ensure that our young women are successful in life because of the foundation they receive.

Corporate donors stepped up in many ways, including supporting opportunities such as sponsorship of the annual Mad for Plaid fundraiser, and utilizing the many generous corporate matching programs available to families. Through this generosity, NDA was able to garner the support needed to successfully meet the campaign initiatives that will truly empower women, and transform lives.

The Toledo Mud Hens Helping Hens/Toledo Walleye Wishing Well Foundation works to foster relationships with organizations committed to improving education and recreational development for youth. The EWTL Campaign’s athletic initiative naturally aligned with the pillars of their organization in supporting youth athletics.

Polaris Logistics Group stepped up as well to support the athletic initiative. Owner and current NDA parent Dan Nester has seen firsthand the value of NDA athletics on and off the field in teaching many valuable lessons.

Lakeside Interiors partnered with NDA on numerous building projects over the years, including the gym, classroom renovations, and window replacement project. Lakeside’s generosity to the Campaign and their dedication to top-tier workmanship will see the new front entrance, science classroom renovations, and music studio and theater redesign become a reality in the very near future.

The Andersons Community Foundation is dedicated to improving the community in support of numerous initiatives, especially education and healthy living. With this focus, they support NDA’s mission of providing a strong educational foundation for young women. The Anderson family as well as many of their employees’ families make up a vast number of proud NDA alumnae, who experienced the mission firsthand and carried it out into the world, and we’re grateful for their commitment to moving forward for the next generation.

To help NDA remain affordable despite the rising costs of education, and maintain highly qualified teachers and college preparatory facilities and programs to support our students, local companies including Shrader Tire & Oil, Unverferth Interiors, Kiemle-Hankins, Designetics, Inc., Concentrek Group, The Trust Company of Toledo, and Dunbar Mechanical stepped up in a big way to provide scholarship funding, ensuring families who seek an NDA education receive the assistance they need.

At NDA, we are blessed to have many current and past parents who work for organizations that match and support their philanthropic interests. The Owens Corning Foundation, KeyBank Foundation, and Fifth Third Bank Foundation have provided generous programs that match the support their employees give to NDA, allowing them to maximize their giving by more than half or even double their initial commitment. These matching gifts have been even more impactful to support NDA for the future.

“I was happy to double my donation by participating in my employer’s matching gift program. Owens Corning offers a 1:1 company match, which allows us to make an even greater impact in our support of NDA and the opportunities they provide for young women.”

NDA’s community and corporate partners have been instrumental in helping move NDA forward and make these initiatives a reality, supporting NDA’s young women of vision and giving them many opportunities to succeed. We are humbled and blessed to have their blessing and partnership.

If your business is interested in supporting NDA’s mission and future, please contact Jim Sulier, Director of Donor Relations, at jsulier@nda.org, or 419.725.6206.

Amazed Every Day.

Christine is Dean of Graduate Studies and Institutional Effectiveness at Adrian College and former NDA Science faculty (2004-11).

During her time on the science faculty at NDA, Dr. Christine Knaggs captivated her students’ interest in science and cultivated their learning through discovery, creativity, and critical thinking. As the Quest program coordinator, she supported students from underrepresented backgrounds, engaging them to improve retention, graduation, and college acceptance. Dr. Knaggs led the implementation and authorization process for NDA to become an IB World School, a program that has seen more than 10 years of success, giving our students the opportunity to take college level courses and earn credit in preparation for their future.

Dr. Knaggs and her husband made the decision to support NDA by designating a gift in their will to support NDA’s mission into the future.

“Notre Dame Academy is truly a special place. In my seven years as a science teacher, Quest Scholarship program director, and International Baccalaureate Coordinator, I saw firsthand incredible growth and development of NDA students during their four years of high school.

NDA is a nurturing, caring environment that fosters young women to take risks and explore their passions in a safe place. In this environment, creativity and critical thinking is fostered.

I am amazed and will continue to be amazed every day at what NDA students accomplish. They are our future leaders and thinkers, and I was proud to be a part of the formation of young women leaders while at NDA.

My hope is that my gift can continue to support the accomplishments of these young women.”

Supporting creativity and critical thinking of our future leaders.
