Dear NDA community,

Flexibility has been this year’s key word for both Notre Dame Academy and me. As I stepped into my new role as NDA’s Principal this summer, our Reopening Task Force was beginning to develop the plan that would put in place a safe environment for reopening school in the fall.

Over the summer, as I adjusted to my new role, the school was also adjusting its plan to the ever-shifting pandemic environment.

I’m particularly proud of the passion and expertise each member of the Reopening Task Force brought to bear on the challenge of reopening the school. This team, which was composed of representatives from all areas of the school, worked cooperatively to think of every detail of reopening, whether it be scheduling all areas of the school as classrooms so we could have social distancing, purchasing uniform-appropriate masks for all students, or planning @NotreDameAcademy @NDA_eagles @nda_eagles

a meticulous sanitation schedule. The Reopening Plan is a result of hundreds of cumulative hours invested in moving forward in the best interests of our students.

Opening up a school during a pandemic has certainly had many challenges, uncertainties, and opportunities to learn from past failures. Plans were tested and adjusted over and over. We continue to make improvements as we get feedback from faculty, staff, students, and parents.

I would like to say a special note of thanks for our amazing faculty and staff for being so willing to do what it takes to help their students learn and thrive during these times. I invite you to read on pages 6 rhrough 9 the specifics of how they did this.

For all of us at NDA, being flexible in this evolving situation is an expression of faith. We are called as Catholics to be flexible and adaptable, making us wide open to emerging opportunities God has for us. In this, we recognize God’s power to use us to turn challenging situations into opportunities for positive growth both individually and as a school community.

Like many people at home this spring due to COVID-19, McKenna Matson ‘21 and her mother baked bread. As she learned the art of making bread, she wondered what determines the correct ratio of sugar necessary for optimum fermentation.

Matson, who is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma candidate, chose to research sugar’s effect on fermentation for her International Baccalaureate Internal Assessment (IA) by creating a series of experiments and analyzing the results. She is considering a career in food science.

Learning to Teach in a New Way

F

or the 2020-21 school year,

students have the option of attending classes in-person or virtually.

At the beginning of each quarter students may change their desired option from remote learning to oncampus learning and vice versa. Virtual learners attend the in-person classes synchronously via Zoom. We believe that all students, no matter if they are in person or virtual, are still Notre Dame Academy students. Zoom allows us to continue the high quality Notre Dame education in the safety of a home environment. All students attend a virtual TCB (homeroom) and will attend virtual assemblies on Wednesdays.

Students who attend classes virtually are still expected to attend class in uniform and adhere to classroom rules such as not eating during class.

“Attending class in uniform – even if attending via Zoom – reinforces for students that this is a time set aside to 6

focus and learn,” said Dean of Students Jessica Beaverson. “It also prepares them for future work situations where they will need to project a professional image when meeting online.”

Teachers, who had not had to accommodate virtual learners prior to this year, have learned the art of Zooming, using audio and visual equipment more than ever before along with innovations on white board sharing, video making and the use of digital assessments. Traditional paper and pen tests are now electronic to enable our entire student body to access the assessments in real time whether or not the student is virtual or in-person.

One of the main adjustments the school made was expanding learning environments into all available spaces.

Faculty had to be flexible as classrooms were reshuffled to best accommodate socially distanced learners. Some faculty were moved to different rooms.

Others now teach in alternative spaces such as our Fitz Commons, the Dining Commons, the Chapel, Sister Carol Hall, and even the gym. As Toledo

area parents responded with concern to their schools going to entirely online learning, there was a surge of admissions applications. Currently, all learning spaces at Notre Dame Academy are at capacity and the 7th and 8th grade enrollment is at an alltime high. In situations where NDA was unable to offer an in-person spot, qualified students were admitted as virtual learners.

Investing in Technology and Training

T

echnology is a major part of the Reopening Plan.

All faculty and students had to be provided with access to and training in online learning resources.

Bandwidth had to be sufficient to support an online environment for everyone in the NDA community. The process began with a survey of student internet access last March. The results identified students with slow or no internet access.

“We had some students in situations where the student and her brothers and sisters were all trying to share their mom’s cell phone to access classes,” said NDA IT Director Jeff Williams.

“Other students had internet access but it was less than 25 Mbps, the minimum speed for video conferencing and data download.”

NDA applied for and received a grant from Buckeye Broadband to get free internet access for students with special needs, who are receiving subsidized lunches or are in need.

Responding to the COVID-19 challenge was made easier because NDA is a 1:1 iPad school and uses Google Suite.

With additional technology investments, NDA has been able to provide an accessible learning environment for both oncampus and virtual learners.

Faith is integral to a Notre Dame Academy education so addressing the pandemic spiritually was an essential part of the Reopening Plan. We did this by leading faculty, staff, and students through the practice of Relinquishment. Faculty and staff did it during their opening meetings and Campus Ministry led students through it during their soft opening days. Below is a summary of the practice. NDA purchased a Zoom subscription that enabled every teacher to have an individually named Zoom account, greatly simplifying connecting with students. The Zoom subscription also increased the allowed number of users and permitted access via both phone and PC. One or more mobile carts with 50-inch displays were put in all large spaces, such as the Performing Arts Center stage and Sister Carol Hall, that have been repurposed for classroom use.

Sister Colleen Marie Cousino ‘79, SND developed a comprehensive series of training videos for faculty to learn every aspect of using technology to teach a hybrid course.

Faculty had two days of training and testing before students returned to campus, plus an additional two weeks to practice live in their classrooms. NDA’s entire faculty has ongoing lessons for Google Classroom and Edmentum software, which provides virtual access for learning materials and video lessons which coincide with the state standards. Edmentum also is a diagnostic tool that virtually creates a learning path of enrichment materials for students in Mathematics and Language Arts.

In normal years, we would focus on preparing new students for the academic year. This year, we determined that we needed to train all students 7-12 on safety and technology tools that were vastly different than previous years. Holding these soft opening days allowed our faculty to be comfortable with the new technology and for our students to see how the campus infrastructure was altered in preparation for the school year. Our virtual students also practiced zooming into their classes.

rea schools’ varied approach to reopening school

posed a particular challenge for faculty and staff with elementary-age children. Recognizing that employees would find it difficult to do their job if worried about their children’s own education, Notre Dame Academy surveyed employees about their needs then set up a supervised learning space for employee children in grades K-6 whose schools are teaching entirely online. These children do their online learning in an NDA classroom set aside for that purpose and take recess and lunch in the courtyard in good weather. NDA is blessed with the ability to provide this program to its employees which also demonstrates that family work/life balance should be a priority.

HOW ARE MASSES BEING HELD? For Masses and liturgies, one HS class plus one NDJA level attends in the Performing Arts Center once per month. There, they are seated every third seat to be socially physically distanced. All other students watch the Mass on Zoom either from their classrooms or, if a virtual student, from home. NDJA students will participate in Mass within their Theology classes once a week through watching streamed daily mass from local parishes.

Supporting Faculty and Staff

HOW DOES THE ADJUSTED SCHEDULE WORK? Students are on campus Monday and Thursday for Blue Block days and Tuesday and Friday for Gold Block days. Wednesdays are set aside for all students to have virtual TCB, faculty office hours, assemblies, and club meetings. Even though classes meet four days a week, weekly classroom time is almost the same as it is in our usual schedule because we consolidated noninstructional time to Wednesdays and slightly extended the school day. n d a .org

NDA during the 1918 Flu 2020 was not the first time Notre Dame Academy closed in response to a spreading pandemic. According to the Sisters of Notre Dame annals from 1918: “There were 32 sisters at the Academy, including St. Ann’s staff...When the number of sisters who were patients had reached 17, Sister M. Ferdinand decided that the schools would have to close...Evidently in answer to our prayers for help, the Health Authorities ordered all schools closed until after the Holidays. Just before the schools were ordered closed, some of the able-bodied were trying to wash dishes. When Sister M. Ferdinand announced two new victims, the blue-apron brigade hastened to the refectory to join her in the fervent prayer to the Sacred Heart which they repeated over and over. Sister M. Ferdinand then promised that if our prayer was heard we would continue to repeat this prayer, “Jesus, King and Center of all hearts, etc.” during recreation every evening. No more were forced to join the patients, and all the patients recovered speedily.”

WHAT ABOUT EXTRACURRICULARS? Club meetings take place virtually on Wednesdays. Athletics follow guidelines from the Ohio Department of Health and the OHSAA, including masks being worn by coaches and student-athletes and sixfoot distancing unless in the field or court of play. This year’s musical was switched to Into the Woods to better accommodate social distancing at both rehearsals and performances which took place outside.

STEM

is a hot topic these days. Despite that, overall only 28% of STEM positions are held by women. The lack of women is especially acute in computer science where women make up only 20% of the workforce1 and in engineering, where they are only 15%2.

Studies suggest that gender bias plays a part in discouraging women from pursuing STEM careers3.

In a 2012 study4 in which university faculty were asked to evaluate identical resumes with male and female names, those with female names were given lower ratings.

Confidence also plays a role. A Stanford University study5 found that girls did more poorly on math tests when their gender was in the minority.

Notre Dame Academy has a long-standing reputation for being a school where women are encouraged to excel in all areas of study, including STEM. As we interviewed Notre Dame Academy alumnae for the following stories, over and over they spoke of the excellent preparation and confidence instilled by Notre Dame Academy and its single gender approach to education.

New Challenges Every Day

iz (Matzinger) Matson ‘98 likes new challenges.

Matson, a Deputy Instrument Systems Engineer, has worked at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for over 20 years. What she loves about her work is that every project at NASA is something no one else has attempted before.

“We solve new, hard problems every day. At NASA, what we design is built one at a time, so each thing we build is new and cutting edge,” said Matson.

Matson began her career at NASA doing systems engineering and analysis. As she has risen to management, communications have become more important than math skills. She recommends anyone going into engineering develop both the soft skills of written and oral communication as well as the hard skills of problem solving, risk management, and schedule management.

“The more senior my position, the further removed I am from the hard math. Now my job centers around how I communicate and how I manage my team,” described Matson. “It’s critical that I formulate the right questions to ask my team of experts so I can make a good decision.”

Matson’s interest in engineering was nurtured at Notre Dame Academy by her physics teacher, Sister Irene, who noticed the talent in Matson and several other girls who were in A.P. Calculus and encouraged them to consider careers in engineering.

“It was great in NDA’s all-girl environment because I felt able to take risks,” explained Matson. “When I got to college, I was one of three women in a class of 80. Even now, only about twenty percent of my colleagues are women and I am often the only woman in the room. The confidence I developed at NDA has definitely been very important in my education and career.”

Her advice for young women going into engineering is to have a five year career plan and develop your personal “brand.”

“How you are perceived matters. There’s a narrower band of ‘acceptable’ behavior between too nice and too tough for female leaders, so finding your voice is important. It can be hard to speak out, especially when you are the only woman in the room. Don’t be afraid to do it, though. Trust yourself when you know you are right.”

Role: Lead Structural Analyst Launched in 2016, it is currently orbiting the asteroid Bennu, scheduled to collect a sample of the asteroid’s surface this fall, and return it to earth in Sept 2023.

Role: Deputy Instrument Systems Engineer Planned to launch in 2021, L’Ralph will take images during fly-bys of the Trojan asteroids. The science data taken during the flybys will hopefully give the science community new information about how our solar system was formed.

IMPACT THROUGH COOPERATION ,

S

cientists are most often envisioned in the lab or studying in the field but Dr. Sarah Karpanty ‘94 says science only has an impact when it partners with others to put findings into action.

Karpanty is a Professor of Fish and Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her focus is on conserving threatened and endangered species by trying to understand what causes populations to decline. She practiced her holistic approach to conservation when she studied lemurs in Madagascar for her Ph.D. Not only only did she study the lemurs and their predators, but she also worked with local people to promote reforestation.

Today, 30,000 seabirds on the Virginia coast are alive because of how Karpanty and her team worked with others to find a solution that honored the needs of both wildlife and humans. In 2017, the Virginia Department of Transportation asked Karpanty to use her expertise from studying coastal birds for decades to advise them on a thorny problem. An island that is part of the Hampton Roads Bridge/Road Complex had become a traffic bottleneck. The transportation department needed to expand the road but could not do so without destroying the habitat for the thousands of birds that nested on the island. Several of the species of birds on the island were already imperilled due to loss of habitat from development.

Karpanty’s team talked to National Public Radio, the Washington Post, and other journalists, telling them the story of how the birds were going to lose their home. The Audubon Society and National Bird Conservancy heard the stories and started a grassroots letter writing campaign to state government officials. The result was that the Governor ordered state agencies to find the birds a new habitat.

“Science alone couldn’t get the problem solved,” said Karpanty. “We worked with journalists, activists, and politicians. Science is just one step in the process of solving problems.”

For the seabirds, the solution was the restoration of an old fort next to the current bridge/tunnel and some floating barges to create new habitats. A recent study showing no bird population decline proved the effectiveness of this creative and cooperative approach.

“It’s like with the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Karpanty. “You have the biological scientists working on the vaccine but their work will be for naught unless you also have the ethicists, social scientists, and politicians planning how you’re going to manufacture and distribute the vaccine in an equitable way.

You don’t work alone as a scientist.”

Karpanty credits Notre Dame Academy for her communication skills and her passion about ornithology.

“My AP Biology teacher, Dr. Manzey, and her husband took the class on a field trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was life changing. After that trip, I wanted to be an ornithologist.”

ustine Somoza ‘00 always knew that she wanted to go into medicine but it wasn’t until

late in medical school that she felt drawn to be an OB/GYN. At the time, the prospect of constantly being on-call to deliver babies in the early morning hours made the specialty a less attractive choice for many medical students.

Changes in obstetrics as a career, however, have enabled OB/GYN practitioners to have better work/ life balance. More physicians are practicing in group settings, and hospitals usually have an inhouse obstetrician. Somoza, who has taught in a residency program, is currently in private practice.

Her practice group, Chesapeake Women’s Care in Annapolis, Maryland, gives her work/life balance because she is her own boss.

What she loves about her work is that every day is different. She performs gynecological surgeries but also sees patients in the office for routine well care and prenatal care.

“When you get to hand them their baby and they are super happy, that’s the best outcome you could wish for and I get to do that pretty much every day,” said Somoza.

COVID-19 has not significantly affected her practice.

“Fortunately, people are always having babies. The babies that were delivered during this pandemic were already in the works,” Somoza explained. “I already know that we have a lot of babies who will be born in January and February. But some people are also not trying to expand their families because they see what it’s like to be with them and be the primary caregiver 24/7.”

She advises students thinking about going into medicine to consider all the options available to them, noting that with the rise of nurse practitioners, there are more mid-level career options than when she entered medicine. She also counsels them to be prepared to work hard.

“It’s a long road but it’s really worth it. You’re going to take a lot of hard classes and there is going to be a lot of sacrifice. But Notre Dame Academy is a great place to go to school and you’ll be well prepared for college and medical school.”

Recent NDA Alumnae Studying for STEM Careers

Madelyn Vesoulis ‘18, was an International Baccalaureate Diploma student at NDA. She is currently a pre-veterinary medicine student at The Ohio State University (OSU). After her freshman and sophomore years at OSU, she did internships with the Coastal Marine Education and Research Academy (CMERA) in Tampa/Clearwater, Florida, tagging for study stingrays and sharks as large as twelve feet long.

If you’re considering going into one of the STEM-related fields, understand that no path looks like another. People will say that if you want to achieve a certain major you need to take a certain path. But take whatever you are interested in even if it’s just a small morsel. I’m from northwest Ohio but I’m interested in sea turtles and that doesn’t seem the most geographically feasible. If there’s something that you’re really interested in, do yourself a favor to explore what you are passionate about instead of trying to morph yourself into something that isn’t really where your heart lies.

For my Extended Essay (EE) when I was in NDA’s IB Diploma Program, I worked with Mrs. Beaverson and Mrs. Wood to work out how to do an analysis with second-hand data. My EE ended up being about sea turtles and climate change. Through the process of writing that paper over those two years, I realized that it was crazy interesting.

Initially I thought I was going to be a dog and cat veterinarian but working in the open air and waking up and not knowing what to expect for the day during my internships made me lean more towards wildlife and exotic medicine.

Most people when they are in high school think the sciences they were given were the sciences. There was no crossover and you saw them separately. But if you look at anything and ask the questions how, when, why, where, you’re coming at it from a scientific mindset.

If you look at even history you still ask those questions. I think that’s what I liked best about my time at NDA. It set the foundation for seeing how all those areas connect.

Mikafui Dzotsi ‘14 is a Masters of Science epidemiology candidate at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She was an International Baccalaureate Diploma student at NDA.

Communication is huge.

With science, it obviously gets more complicated as you go. At the end of the day, though, you’ve got to realize that you want to be able to communicate your findings to anyone of any kind of educational level.

You want them to be able to make those lifestyle choices.

I think that’s the biggest problem with this pandemic.

You have people that say this affects all these other things, but, for regular people, they just want to know if they need to wear a mask.

Anjali Fernandes ‘16 graduated from The Ohio State University (OSU) with a degree in English. She is currently attending medical school at OSU. She was an International Baccalaureate Diploma student at NDA.

I’ve always thought of medicine as the most noble profession and the best way to go out and do God’s work and promote life in the world. When I was at NDA, I did a lot of service and that was a big push to medicine. Through medicine, you have a great capacity to affect the lives of people who are underserved.

Kelsey King ‘17 is a senior in chemical engineering at Texas A&M University.

She has completed two internships with Marathon Petroleum.

Megan Vesoulis ‘20 was an International Baccalaureate Diploma student at NDA and is currently a freshman at the University of Toledo.

She was selected to be a research assistant investigating ways to fight bacteria and viruses, work usually reserved for upperclass students.

Having the opportunity to be familiar with the research lab and research techniques as a freshman makes the work even better.

This work is usually reserved for juniors and seniors.

My commitment towards learning and getting something meaningful out of it really resonated with the professor.

Completed an internship with NASA SEES

Seyoung Ree ‘21 completed an internship with NASA SEES this summer. The nationally competitive NASA, the Texas Space Grant Consortium (TSFC) and The University of Texas at Austin Center for Space Research (UT/CSR) Summer Intern Program provides selected students with NASA remote sensing data including CSR analysis of ice sheets, earth’s gravity field, and other satellite observations.

Scientists and engineers at TSFC and UT/CSR worked with Ree and her team to help them develop a model for mosquito habitats. The experience gave Ree experience in authentic NASA research through field investigation and data analysis. Ree is a National Merit Commended Scholar.

My favorite project on my internship was a test run that I was able to do. The test run was to troubleshoot identify exactly where an issue was occurring and then try possible solutions.

With that, I had to write a pre-test memo, talk to the operators to tell them what move they had to make moves in the unit, carry out the test run, and write a post-test memo.

Last Day of School for Seniors Celebrated with Cookie Drive-Thru!

On Wednesday, April 29th, the Class of 2020’s last day of school, NDA wanted to say thank you and we miss you by offering a free NDA cookie to all students! Faculty, staff and administration lined the parking lot from beginning to end and waved to students.

Horns were honked, signs were waved, music was played and even with the threat of rain everyone was all smiles! “The original idea was to just have a few administrators here passing out cookies with a curbside pickup, and then as soon as the faculty and staff found out about it, they got together and lined the drive with signs and honking horns,” declared NDA President Kim Grilliot.

Graduating Seniors Feel the Love of “Adoption” and “Spotlights” NDA graduating seniors ended their final year like no classes have ever done. School was closed, learning was virtual, and events were cancelled. So that they could feel and know the love the community had for them each senior was highlighted on social media in a series called Senior Spotlight! Seniors were also celebrated through a social media campaign called, “Adopt a Senior!” they started on Facebook. Students created posts highlighting their after graduation plans and little about themselves. Members in the community would then contact the student to adopt them; showering them with little gifts, candy, flowers and many other gifts as a celebration of their graduation. Once faculty and staff heard about this campaign every NDA senior was adopted within days!

NDA welcomed the freshman Class of 2024 and the new class of the NDJA in style! All incoming freshmen were invited to an on campus drive-thru where they were greeted by faculty, staff, Link Crew, students, NDA families, and Izzy! A few days later everyone gathered back on campus to welcome 7th and 8th graders!

NDA Theater Takes It Outside

In response to COVID-19, the NDA thespians have taken their performances outside. Our annual spring play moved to summer. NDA performed Splendid Productions’ MACBETH with our brick wall as backdrop in early July. The fall musical was changed to INTO THE WOODS and moved to the courtyard behind the dining commons to accommodate COVID-19 appropriate rehearsals and performances.

Congratulations to Ciara Geronimo ‘20 for becoming a published writer in the 2020 Edition of Rising Stars with Appelley Publishing for her poem entitled, “Shattered Glass.” Ciara reached out to her English teacher, Mrs. Laura Gallaher, and said, “I wanted to say thank you for all the support you have given me especially with my writing!” #risingstar

Danielle Donkor ’23 received a medal and a certificate for earning a Silver Maxima Cum Laude score on the National Latin Exam in March. Her score was in the top 20% of students who took the exam.

Sarah Faisal ‘20 was in Leadership Toledo’s youth Spotlight! “Through Leadership Toledo, I have learned to lead with kindness and responsibility. Oftentimes, it seems like we cannot make a large impact. Through participating in YiPEE, I have learned that even a meaningful conversation is enough to make change!”

Faculty and Staff Studying Racial Justice

NDActivism is Theme for the Year Executive student council selected “NDActivism: Trailblazing Through the Ages”. Throughout the year, they will be highlighting current students and alumnae who have made positive contributions to the world around them.

Student council also made videos to teach their peers how to advocate for what they believe in, showcasing the Seven Pillars of Catholic Social Teaching.

Faculty and staff have begun a sustained study of racial justice issues in education.

As a starting place, all faculty and interested staff have received copies of Fr. Bryan Massingale’s Racial Justice and the Catholic Church, and will discuss the book in their Professional Learning Communities. In the future, we hope to bring in speakers and professional workshops as well. The ultimate goal is to take concrete steps towards greater equity in education at Notre Dame Academy, and ensure our school is a place truly welcoming to all God’s children.

Melanie (Egan) Ogrodowski '93 (right), returns to NDA as the new Director of Alumnae Engagement and Annual Giving. With a strong background in communications and marketing, Ogrodowski has worked at various organizations and businesses in northwest Ohio throughout her career - including NDA previously from 1999 to 2000. Ogrodowski will be working with alumnae mentors who have volunteered to take part in the Eagle Network Mentor Program.

The Eagle Network Mentor Program will connect our most valuable resource – our NDA alumnae – with current students. The program also will help current NDA students understand the benefits of having a mentor and will expose them to real-world thought, challenges and opportunities – and the wealth of knowledge our alumnae have to share.

NDA’s new Career Counselor, Sydni Harmon, will help develop and cultivate student participation in the Eagle Network. As Career Counselor, Harmon is tasked with facilitating career exploration initiatives by helping NDA students develop awareness of their strengths, interests, and understanding of the world of work. Harmon’s goal is to help students develop their career and educational plans through exposure to different career paths and opportunities.

Harmon is a Toledo native who returned home after receiving her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Denison University and her Master’s in Education with a concentration in Student Affairs from Iowa State University. In her previous professional roles, Harmon served as a Leadership Education and Development Advisor at Iowa State University and a Program Coordinator at the University of Toledo. She is excited to help NDA students discover and develop their passions and talents to succeed in the professional world.

Based on the vision of founder Charles “Chick” Evans, the scholarship awards full tuition and housing. Selection is based on academic excellence, leadership, character, caddy experience, and need. Depending on the school the recipient chooses to attend, the scholarship is worth $125,000-$300,000.

Dame Academy Class of 2020 were awarded the prestigious Evans Scholarship. Abigail Firsdon ’20 and Caroline Jarrell ’20 joined ten previous NDA graduates who had been awarded the honor of receiving the generous scholarship.

Nationally, the program awarded 285 scholarships to students attending 19 different universities in 2020. There are currently just over 1000 Evans Scholars attending college. Evans Scholars have a 96% college graduation rate.

Inverness Club employs over 250 caddies. Ressner says Inverness Club is delighted to have Notre Dame Academy students caddy because they have great character and a willingness to learn. He believes caddying offers them something they would not get from other jobs.

Dick Ressner, a Director with the Western Golf Association, is responsible for identifying potential Evans Scholar candidates in the Toledo area. He meets with them as early as their sophomore year and mentors them, suggesting experience that will make them an attractive scholarship candidate and encouraging them to get the required number of caddy rounds.

“I believe without a doubt that caddying is the greatest job in the world for a 14-, 15-, or 16-year old in America,” Ressner said. “ We look for kids with great character and teach them not just about caddying but about commitment and getting out of your comfort zone to engage with people.”

Leadership Update: Andrea (Zobler) Zimmerman ‘96 Appointed New NDA Principal

A

ndrea (Zobler) Zimmerman ‘96 rose to the position of Principal of Notre Dame Academy

this summer. Mrs. Zimmerman has been a teacher for 18 years, and has been leading academics at NDA since 2013. A lifelong Toledo resident, she holds a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Lourdes University and graduated from The University of Toledo with a Bachelors in grades 1-8 education.

As a 1996 alumna of Notre Dame Academy, she deeply feels the “plaid sisterhood” felt by anyone who has attended Notre Dame Academy. Additionally, she personally understands what it is like to be an NDA parent because her daughter currently attends NDA. With this rich background, Mrs. Zimmerman will bring a personal understanding of the dreams and needs of students, faculty, staff, parents and alumnae of NDA. Mrs. Zimmerman also feels providing a faith and work-life balance role model for NDA students is important. She and her husband Michael are parents of four children. She has served on the Advisory Council for All Saints Catholic School and is a catechist at All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford, Ohio, where she and her family are parishioners.

eth Corrigan returns to NDA as Dean of Academics this school year. Mrs. Corrigan taught

7th and 8th graders and led our NDJA Student Council from 2008-2015. She left NDA to earn her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an Education Technology endorsement at Bowling Green State University, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Toledo with the goal of graduating by August of 2021. With a passion to help teachers, her experiences in the higher education field, combined with her background at NDA, Mrs. Corrigan is highly qualified to take on this new role. She and her husband Craig, who is a special education teacher in the Toledo Public Schools, are members of St. Aloysius Church in Bowling Green, Ohio.

COVID-19 ADJUSTED GRADUATION CEREMONIES The Class of 2020 graduated with a socially-distanced in-person Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises at The Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

The NDJA 8th graders graduated with a hybrid of virtual ceremony and in-person graduation photo opportunities. All 8th graders were invited on campus to get their picture taken with life size photo boards of NDA Administration! On graduation day, the ceremony was virtual with a slideshow that included the photos taken.

his year’s Izzy Shuffle 5K looked a bit different than last year’s due to COVID-19.

Still, we were thrilled to be able to host the event and make it virtual! On Saturday, June 13, 2020, we had nearly 70 participants including alumnae, current NDA students, and future Eagles. Alumnae who participated in this 2nd annual event spanned from California, Texas, Oregon, Minnesota, Kansas, and Louisiana, to North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington D.C., Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan. The class of ’79 even took the initiative to walk the 5K together using Zoom! Each participant received a gray Izzy Shuffle t-shirt and finisher certificate.

LIFE EVENTS Megan Younkman ‘94 is an LPGA Professional Member directing Golf Instruction for the Golf Channel Academy and the 5 Golf Courses at Bethpage Black in New York. She has led the Academy to being one of 13 teams to compete at the PGA Junior League Nationals and qualified 5 players to US Kid’s World Championships. Megan also sits on the Executive Education Committee for LPGA Headquarters and develops the Professional Education for LPGA members.

Grace Badik ‘09 has spent the last 7 years working in non-profit work working with housing and homeless populations.

She will be transitioning to law school in the Fall of 2020 and would like to focus on practicing public interest law so that she may continue work with the most vulnerable and marginalized populations in our society.

Paige (Daney) Rechtin ‘09, after attending college at Miami University, obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree (DMD) from the University of

Kentucky in 2013. She then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota for two years to specialize in Orthodontics. She is now living in Northern Kentucky where she is praciticing Orthodontics and lives with her husband, Michael, a resident in Oral Surgery.

Ellen Ashner ‘10 earned her Master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of Toledo.

Kathryn Whitehill ‘11 graduated with her Master of Arts in History from the University of Toledo in May of 2020. Her master’s thesis was entitled “Cleanliness in Antebellum Detroit: Urban Development of Nineteenth-Century Private and Public Spheres in Detroit, MI.” Kathryn has accepted a position with Americorps as a Community Volunteer

Ambassador and her year of service will be with the National Parks Service at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, MI. Elizabeth Bancroft ‘13 earned her BSN from the University of Cincinnati by completing an accelerated nursing program. She is currently doing her residency in Indianapolis where she is working with COVID-19 patients and being a surgical nurse.

Myranda Duhart ‘16 graduated cum laude from Spelman College and was also recently commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army.

Jessica Rutkowski ‘16 graduated from Ohio University with her Bachelor of Science in Journalism. Jessica will now

become a missionary with the Fellowship of Catholic University Students.

Kelsey King ‘17 completed her second internship with Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC) in Wilmington, CA where she is working on various project units used to produce transportation fuels. She will be completing her senior year at Texas A&M majoring in Chemical Engineering.
