Dear NCWBA Members and Friends,
As we settle into the rhythm of summer—with its longer days, vacation adventures, and a bit of breathing room—I hope you’re finding time to recharge and reflect. For many of us, this season offers a chance not just to pause, but to recommit to the values that brought us to the legal profession: integrity, justice, and service.
One of the NCWBA’s enduring priorities is to support and amplify the work of women attorneys across the country who are maintaining and fighting for the rule of law—often during challenging and uncertain times. Whether you’re litigating in courtrooms, advising clients, teaching the next generation, or leading through advocacy and policy, your role is vital. The rule of law doesn’t sustain itself—it depends on lawyers like you.
We also believe strongly in the power of connection. Local women’s bar associations
remain the beating heart of our organization. I encourage you to get involved (or stay involved!) in your local bar associations. They are engines of mentorship, innovation, and community, and NCWBA is proud to support and learn from each of them.
I’m especially looking forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events:
● The ABAAnnual Meeting in Toronto, where we’ll host our annual members meeting (hybrid format) and swearing in our new board and officers. Please click here to let us know if you can attend virtually or in-person.
● And for the first time ever, our annual summit will “meet the Members Where They Are,” this year in West Virginia! We’re bringing workshops and programming directly to our members—because our mission is national, and our support should be, too! Register now for Summit
As this is last newsletter for me as President, I want to specifically thank you for being part of this vibrant, dynamic network. Your strength, leadership, and dedication inspire everything we do. To our current board, thank you for all your hard work this year; you have set the foundation for success to come! I am so proud to turn over to Jami Cooper and her dynamic executive board next month!

Our NCWBA On the MIC (Membership Insight Chats) series has had an outstanding year so far, offering rich, practical conversations designed to strengthen our member organizations and their leaders.
We kicked off in December with an excellent session featuring financial educator Tonya Rapley, who shared invaluable insights on creating financial security and confidence.
In February, Elise McQuain of Frost Brown Todd LLP and Shawnna Williams of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC joined us to discuss building effective affinity groups. They offered strategies for fostering meaningful connections and supporting networks that improve the sense of belonging among members and employees.
On March 25, we held a facilitated listening session with Sheila Abron, Partner at Fisher Phillips. This conversation provided a thoughtful space for leaders navigating complex discussions within their organizations—particularly those with bylaws restricting political involvement—offering insights and resources for maintaining integrity while leading through discourse.
Tami Munsch VP Membership Programming
Tonya Rapley returned on April 8 for Financial Literacy for Women 102: Advanced Financial Wellness, building on her popular December session with deeper guidance for financial empowerment.
On May 13, our NCWBA panel delivered Membership Growth Strategies, focusing on attracting, retaining, and engaging new members.
Most recently, on July 8, our Bylaw Modernization Workshop provided practical guidance for updating organizational frameworks to better serve evolving needs.
Mark your calendars for our next On the MIC! On August 12 at 12:00pm EST, we'll host Programming Excellence, a collaborative session focused on sharing successful programs and speaker selection tips. Bring your best ideas and learn from your peers about what makes a program shine.
Can’t make the call? No problem. You can either:
1. Send us your info ahead of time by emailing info@ncwba.org
2. Have someone else from your organization join in your place.
Have an idea for a topic you’d like to see featured next year? We want to hear from you! Please reach out with your suggestions to info@ncwba.org. Let’s keep making On the MIC a resource that serves all of our members and organizations.
Food From the Bar is a powerful, collaborative way for the legal community to address hunger at the local level. This nationwide campaign mobilizes legal professionals to support their local Feeding America-affiliated food banks through fundraising, food drives, and volunteer efforts—helping ensure that children, families, and seniors have access to nutritious meals.
Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles actively promotes Food From the Bar participation among its members sponsored a women’s bar LA Food Bank volunteer day in May. The 2025 campaign for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank raised an impressive, record-breaking $602,078.
Women’s bar associations across the country have embraced Food From the Bar, demonstrating how our profession can make a meaningful difference. We invite your organization to consider joining this important initiative—and to share your experiences so we can celebrate your successes together.
Here are a few recent updates from NCWBA Member Organizations:
● Idaho Women Lawyers sponsored Idaho’s First Annual Food From the Bar campaign, supporting The Idaho Foodbank’s statewide programs. Working alongside the broader Idaho legal community, they raised enough funds in their inaugural campaign to
● Women’s Bar Association of DC members participated through their law firms during May. More than 30 DC-area law firms, law schools, and organizations joined forces to support Capital Area Food Bank’s mission to provide healthy meals during the summer months, raising $564,672.
● California Women Lawyers members in Orange County took part in the June campaign alongside the Orange County legal community. Together, they raised $172,001.32 to help Second Harvest Food Bank deliver much-needed nutritious food to local children, families, and seniors experiencing food insecurity.
NCWBA encourages all member organizations to consider participating in Food From the Bar this year or next year. Whether you choose to fundraise, volunteer, or advocate, every effort counts. If your organization is already involved, we’d love to hear your stories and share them with our network.
For more information on how to get started, visit the NCWBA website or email us at info@ncwba.org.
Together, we can fight hunger and strengthen our communities—one meal at a time.

GREENBRIER RESORT | OCTOBER 17, 2025
This year’s Summit is comprised of an energetic keynote address on the topic of engagement, a series of immersive and collaborative workshops where topic leaders facilitate discussions among bar leaders, and inspiring presentations from the winners of this year’s NCWBA awards – all in one of the most picturesque and relaxing resorts in the world.
This year’s Summit keynote address will focus on the important topic of member engagement, and will be presented by St. Louis lawyers-turned-consultants. Kelli and Mollie lead Aspire, a consulting group designed to help individuals and organizations reach their potential.
Mollie Farrell Khazaeli is an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and holds a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) designation from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC). She is also an Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner (ELI-MP). Mollie received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and her B.A. in Sociology and Women’s Studies from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also certified in Mental Health First Aid, Inclusive Leadership, and Effective Evaluations and Feedback for All.
Kelli Dunaway is a lawyer, coach, teacher, consultant, and writer whose raison d’être is helping people realize their potential. She designs and delivers coaching and training that empowers people to define goals and pursue them with intentionality and purpose. Kelli uses humor, instinct, powerful questions and brings energy, enthusiasm and shared experience to her presentations, which are designed to be engaging training on a variety of professional and leadership skills.
Attracting and retaining members requires clear communication of the value your organization brings to their professional and personal lives. In this session, keynote speakers Kelli Dunaway and Mollie Farrell Khazaeli will explore effective strategies to engage current members, inspire new recruits, and demonstrate why bar association membership matters now more than ever.
Pepperdine Caruso School of Law Professor of Law Christine Chambers Goodman, Northern Kentucky University Law Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the W. Bruce Lunsford Academy for Law, Business, and Technology Michelle Browning Coughlin, and West Virginia University College of Law Assistant Dean of Student Services & Engagement Jennifer Powell will offer an insightful look into the evolving demographics, values, and expectations of current law students. This session explores how these future attorneys are shaping the legal profession and what their emergence means for bar associations, employers, and the broader legal landscape.
Sheila Abron, former NCWBA President, and a partner at Fisher Phillips LLP, chairs her firm’s Affirmative Action and Federal Contract Compliance Practice Group, which has made this year a busy one for her. In a time of shifting priorities and heightened scrutiny around diversity, equity, and inclusion, women’s bar associations face both challenges and opportunities. In this session, Ms. Abron will explore how the evolving DEI landscape is shaping the mission, membership, and advocacy efforts of these organizations—and what it means for their future relevance and resilience.
Delve into how imposter syndrome affects not just individual confidence, but organizational culture and performance. This session will be led by Melissa Romano, a multi-certified professional with a diverse background in health, healing, and social work, owner of Reclaiming Healthy, and author of “Vagus Nerve Deck: 75 Exercises to Reset Your Nervous System,” who will explore strategies to recognize, address, and overcome self-doubt, empowering leaders and teams to thrive more authentically and effectively.
Tami Munsch is the President-Elect of NCWBA, the past-President of the Mississippi Women Lawyers Association, a solo practitioner, and a criminal justice professor at Southern Mississippi University. She also happens to be rather good at AI tools. She will lead a discussion about how artificial intelligence is transforming the way legal organizations operate, from streamlining workflows to enhancing decision-making. This session will explore practical applications, ethical considerations, and strategies for effectively integrating AI tools to boost productivity and innovation.
NCWBA Vice President of Fundraising and Strategic Partnership and the principal of StudioIP (Denver, Colorado), Jessie Pellant is the perfect person to guide a discussion on every organization’s favorite topic: fundraising. Effective fundraising is key to sustaining and growing your organization's impact. This session will share proven strategies, creative approaches, and practical tips to help you build stronger donor relationships, increase engagement, and achieve your fundraising goals.
Knowing when and how to respond to public statement requests is a critical skill for organizations navigating sensitive or high-profile issues. This session will cover best practices for evaluating requests, crafting thoughtful responses, and maintaining authenticity while protecting your organization's values and reputation. This session will be led by Shannon Smith, the Immediate Past President of the West Virginia State Bar and a professor at the West Virginia University College of Law.
Setbacks are an inevitable part of any professional journey, but they can also be powerful catalysts for growth. This session explores how to reframe disappointments as opportunities, build resilience, and turn failures into stepping stones toward future success. Join members of the Kansas Women Attorneys Association, including Hon. Kellie Hogan and Kristen Wheeler, as they guide this impactful discussion.
Creating memorable events that spark connection and inspire participation is both an art and a strategy. Led by Jennifer Hill, former president of the Wichita Bar Association and the Wichita Women Attorneys Association, and Kim Sporrer, Executive Director of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, this session will offer insights into designing impactful signature events that reflect your organization’s mission, energize your community, and keep people coming back year
With five generations now active in the workplace, organizations have a unique opportunity to leverage a wide range of perspectives, skills, and experiences. Ashley Odell, a member lawyer with Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, and a prolific speaker on issues of diversity, belonging, and generational differences, will explore how to foster collaboration, bridge generational gaps, and create an inclusive culture that drives engagement and performance across all age groups.
Sharing your story or expertise through a book can be a powerful tool for connection and credibility. This session will explore how writing and publishing can elevate your voice and create meaningful engagement with your organization. This workshop will be led by Melanie Herschorn, founder of Big Impact Books. Ms. Herschorn is an award-winning journalist, bestselling author, and publisher who helps attorneys and thought leaders elevate their authority and visibility.
Struggling to keep members engaged—or bring new ones into the fold? You're not alone! In this session Vanessa Shaw, Founder & CEO of The Business Growth Academy will equip you with actionable tools to deepen connections, boost participation, and foster meaningful growth. Whether you're aiming to reinvigorate your membership, develop future leaders, or strengthen your organization’s impact, you’ll leave with a clear path to move forward with purpose and confidence.
At 4:00 on October 16, 2025, a collaboration of West Virginia women bar leaders will present a “Ladder Down” panel discussion on the importance of mentoring and inspiring the next generation of women lawyers. The event will be held at the Schoolhouse Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, with a reception to follow. The group has received commitments from Hon. Stephanie Thacker, a judge with the U.S. Court of Appeal for the 4th Circuit and Hon. Haley Bunn, a justice with the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals.
The Summit Dine-Around will follow Summit, and will give attendees, keynote speakers, and workshop leaders the opportunity to enjoy dinner at one of several amazing local restaurants in small groups. Sign-up information will be available during registration.
Members of NCWBA can register for Summit for $275. Non-member registration is $325. Law students can attend for $25. Scan the QR Code to register! Your registration will include breakfast and lunch in addition to the Programming. We can’t wait to see you at Summit!

The NCWBA’s signature Good Guys Program has always championed the power of partnership in advancing women in the legal profession. As part of our ongoing commitment to meaningful, effective change, we’re excited to share our new tagline: “Doubling Down on Qualified Diversity.”
Upcoming Good Guys programming will explore and clarify what this means in practice. We’ll emphasize that for us, DEIB has always meant qualified—that diversity, equity,
inclusion, and belonging are not about lowering standards, but about ensuring we recognize and reward the full range of qualified talent.
Participants can expect candid conversations and practical strategies about how firms, organizations, and leaders can benefit from this approach, not only through stronger teams but also through improved client service, innovation, and retention.
Stay tuned for details on upcoming events and materials designed to help Good Guys allies—and all of us—turn commitment into action, advancing a legal profession that rewards excellence wherever it is found.
Share a free audio chapter from the ABA’s Her Story 2 book with your WBA!
Kate Ahern, J.D., LL.M. recorded an audio version of her chapter from the book, so women lawyers can listen for free and get a sense of the content in Her Story 2. Kate’s chapter talks about why it’s so hard for women lawyers to put their own priorities on the front burner (learn more and grab Kate’s audio chapter here). “Her Story Book 2: The Resilient Woman Lawyer’s Guide to Conquering Obstacles,” is a
collection of stories and advice by women lawyers.
The authors explore the status of women in the legal profession, discuss overcoming obstacles, and provide practical tips and career advice, all intended to inspire women lawyers. The approximately 50 essays in the book were authored by women lawyers from a variety of different practice areas, career stages, and experiences.
NCWBA is proud to partner with the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) for their 2025 Annual Meeting in July. All are welcome to join NAWL in Chicago for a day-and-a-half focused on the theme of Rising Together: Strength Through Unity.

We’re pleased to announce that the NCWBA’s GOOD Guys program will be spotlighted at the 2025 Litigation Counsel of America (LCA) Conference & Celebration of Fellows, October 22–24 at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel in Dana Point, California.
This dynamic session will be moderated by NCWBA Past President Teresa Beck of Klinedinst PC, and will feature male leaders in the legal profession who are actively working to advance the legal careers of lawyers from under-represented groups—and to demonstrate that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are not about lowering standards, but about recognizing and rewarding the full range of qualified talent. Through candid conversation and personal insight, the panel will highlight how male allies are helping lead the charge for gender equity and driving meaningful, lasting change across the profession. Panelists confirmed to date include Gregory Hahn (Bose Law), Michael Ehrenstein (former LCA President, Ehrenstein & Sager), and Matthew Wegner (Brown Wegner). Stay tuned as more speakers are finalized!
We’re excited to bring this important conversation to the LCA community for a second time (an engaging program was held in October 2024 at LCA’s Annual Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming). For more details about the 2025 LCA Conference, visit Litigation Counsel of America’s website
