Graduate accounting education isn't one-size-fits-all. We meet students where they are — in their careers, their lives, and their unique paths to the accounting profession.
For the last five years, the Jenkins Online MAC program has been setting the standard by combining flexible, high-quality education with robust student support, mentorship and career services tailored for working professionals.

In 2019, following 25 years as a top-ranked program, Jenkins MAC began offering the online format to meet changing market needs With 72 students now enrolled online, the MAC program has nearly doubled in size overall expanding access without compromising quality.
Five years later, the results speak for themselves: a remarkable 90% graduation rate, students from diverse backgrounds coast to coast, and the same exceptional faculty, mentorship, and career services as the on-campus program
“We've significantly increased accessibility while maintaining the quality that defines Jenkins MAC. Our online students don't just get a convenient format—they get the full MAC experience.”
— Scott Showalter, Jenkins MAC Director

Online delivery allows MAC to thrive during COVID-19 without missing a beat ASAP Program moves fully online, providing greater convenience for career changers

Former Air Force intelligence officer turned entrepreneur, Jennifer needed flexibility to balance her financial coaching business, family life, and graduate studies.
“I feel like the Jenkins Online MAC doesn't just allow you to be a person with a life outside of school, but actively supports it. I love how many classes have taken me beyond book learning to where the rubber meets the road."
Jennifer's path to accounting started with her coaching practice, where she discovered a passion for helping clients navigate complex financial situations— from divorce cases to entrepreneurship to sustainability initiatives.
"NC State wasn't the only school I applied to, but as I learned more about the program format and talked with the people running the show, I knew it was exactly where I wanted to be "
Amid the accounting profession’s growing pipeline crisis, the Jenkins MAC program restructured to expand access and welcome students from nontraditional backgrounds.

The Jenkins MAC Program's ASAP initiative earned a 2025 Innovator Award from the Graduate Business Curriculum Roundtable, recognition that validates our commitment to removing barriers and expanding access for talented students from all backgrounds.
Traditional graduate accounting programs required 12-18 months of prerequisite coursework, often in costly, inflexible formats. ASAP changed that equation. This fast-track online pathway allows students to complete all prerequisites in as little as one summer, opening doors for career changers, working professionals, and students without accounting backgrounds.
“The program exemplifies Poole College's commitment to innovation in graduate education, opening doors for talented professionals from all backgrounds.”
Frank Buckless, Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. Dean
Built entirely in-house using NC State resources, ASAP consists of self-paced modules covering Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Intermediate I and II, Tax, Audit, and Business Law. Students complete only what they need, progressing at their own pace with faculty support throughout.
Anabelle Maya (MAC '27), Contact Center Operations Specialist, Institute of Reading Development
From psychology to accounting: Anabelle Maya's path wasn't straightforward.
After earning her degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and starting a Ph.D. in developmental psychology, she pivoted to education project management. Looking for career growth and a field valuing data-driven decisionmaking, she discovered accounting.
The Jenkins MAC program stood out for its accessibility to career changers "All of my interactions with the MAC staff have put me at ease," she said.

“The ASAP modules have been invaluable in preparing me to start strong."
From 5 students in 2017-18 to nearly 100 in 2024-25, ASAP has transformed access to graduate accounting education proving that with the right preparation and support, students from any background can thrive. Today, about 40% of all MAC students participate in ASAP

How do you prepare graduates with no work experience to step into professional roles at top firms? Jim Scalise designed ACC 544 Business Process Management for the Accounting Professional to answer that question.

ACC 544 gives students hands-on experience with the complex business processes they'll encounter from day one
Developed in collaboration with experts from the accounting profession, the course centers on a fictitious pharmaceutical company, Sympathe, Inc., where students work through complete reporting cycles. Using tools like Microsoft Visio and Alteryx, they translate process narratives into detailed flowcharts, identify control points, analyze data flows, and understand how accounting events ultimately shape financial statements.
This isn't theoretical work. Students build real skills in data analytics, process mapping, and controls testing — the same skills firms need immediately.
“ACC 544 built upon prior coursework, allowing us to gain valuable experience translating process narratives into decision-useful information. This directly boosted my confidence during my summer internship. My experience with Alteryx — a software I had not used before — gave me exposure to data analysis tools that are increasingly essential in the profession, preparing me to remain technologically savvy throughout my career."
— Joe LaMura (MAC ‘25), Incoming Audit Associate, Cherry Bekaert

MAC students traveled to Geneva and Zurich with Professor Mark Beasley, examining how major organizations assess and manage risk. They engaged with the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, and Fortune 500 companies including ABB and Credit Suisse—exploring how world leaders address emerging political, health, and trade crises.
NC State accounting students provided free tax return assistance to community members, gaining practical experience while serving those who need it most through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program.
In ACC 550, students learned directly from leaders at the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) and American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), understanding how policy shapes practice.
From Kathy Krawczyk's summer CPA preparation assistance to dedicated faculty mentorship, MAC provided the support students need to pass the CPA exam and launch successful careers.

Graduation is a beginning, not an ending. Jenkins MAC graduates launch successful careers, return for professional development, mentor current students, and stay connected to a network that grows stronger every year.
