MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

CAPITAL WORKS

It is great to see the urgent care centre redevelopment taking shape in Cobram In August the steel fabrication went up and framework of the internal walls is now nearly complete The project is on track to see part of the new Urgent Care Centre open by late December with the final completion date for the first quarter of 2024

Tenders for consultants, architects and engineers have commenced for the development of the new Numurkah Pioneers Memorial Lodge This team will commence the project planning and will continue throughout 2024 As you know, $54 3 million was committed to the project from the Victorian Government, which is coordinated by The Victorian Health Board Authority (VHBA) and the Department of Health in partnership with NCN Health. Construction of the new building will start in 2025.

COMMUNITY READING DAYS

NCN Health Community Development Officers organised and hosted Community Reading Days across Numurkah, Cobram and Nathalia communities over the last two weeks. Many thanks to all staff who supported these initiatives. Feedback from these events have been fantastic with many schools, families, organisations and individuals getting involved.

Engagement with our community plays a key role in our health promotion and service delivery priorities, thanks so much to all involved and well done Early learning and encouragement of reading creates nurturing relationships between parents and their children The connections through reading helps them develop social, emotional and cognitive skills and preparation for learning

FEEDBACK HUBS

The Quality Department has recently streamlined and updated our feedback process across NCN Health

There are now ‘Feedback Hubs’ in reception and waiting areas in each campus Consumers can provide feedback online using IPads available in some hubs, scan a QR Code and complete the feedback on their own device or fill out a paper form. All feedback from these hubs will go to a centralised email address monitored by the Quality Team. The Hubs are compact, bright and very easy to use. Well done to the Quality Team for this improvement.

SWELL

NCN Health recently formed a Health and Wellbeing Committee. Following a staff competition the committee was rebranded SWELL (Staff Wellbeing) and a new yellow and white logo was developed.

SWELL will bring together all our staff wellbeing initiatives across NCN Health under one banner making them more engaging, accessible and meaningful for all staff For more information on SWELL and the upcoming launch go to page 6

FAREWELL ANDREW

It has been a very sad time at NCN Health after the sudden passing of our much-loved friend and colleague Andrew Stewart from the NCN Health Cobram campus Maintenance Team

Our heartfelt sympathies are with his friends and family Many staff attended Andrew’s Funeral in Barooga on September 4 and it was a great show of support for Andrew’s family

It is going to be a difficult time for many staff going forward, please continue to reach out and support each other. Andrew will be very much missed.

NCN HEALTH STAFF NEWS AUGUST 2023

VALE ANDREW STEWART

The Cobram Maintenance team and Director of Operations Justin Sullivan put together some memories and stories about Andrew for his funeral. It is shared here with permission, for staff to read.

The loss of our dear work colleague, Andrew, has been deeply felt across NCN Health We have reflected on why Andrew meant so much to us all There are 2 key reasons;

Andrew worked in the maintenance team, and there is no other team which has contact with the whole work place Their daily routine takes them through Theatre to Acute and urgent Care, past reception and Imaging and Admin, then across the lawn to the kitchen, through Irvin House, then a call into Community Rehab, then Pathology and the medical and dental clinics So on a daily basis they see everyone

The second and most important reason was Andrew himself As he walked around, Andrew would greet everyone by name (or if he didn’t know their name – “morning love”) – and with a warm smile He would stop for a chat, and share a joke- until Tammy would have to say “Come on Andrew” – to keep him focused Andrew was a generous, kind, funny and sociable presence He saw the best in people and drew out the best in people Andrew would be uncomfortable with all this praise – so perhaps a few stories of the Andrew we knew Andrew was unique and did things his way

One time, Andrew declared that the industrial cleaning product used in maintenance was useless – he had a product that worked much better. The product ? Active Men’s Wash! Yes, Andrew had discovered in the shower at home that his chosen body wash also cleaned the glass in the shower better than any cleaning product. So, he bought it in bulk and brought it work. we don’t think it was ever registered with a safety data sheet – but Andrew refused to use anything else. Andrew used it to clean mower parts, commodes and wheelchairs. When it wasn’t available at the local supermarkets – he bought it online. We were in the maintenance workshop recently reminiscing about Andrew and we got out the bottle of Active Men’s Wash, we opened the bottle to smell it and realised why it was so good. It smelt like a powerful combination of WD40 and teenage boy!

Andrew enjoyed a good joke. One time there was a group of local artists organised to paint Koalas on local buildings around town. Kim, the Community Health Manager, agreed that a koala could be painted on the outside wall of community rehab. Kim met the artist on site and left him to work on the artwork. Not long after Andrew burst into Kim’s office and said “There’s some hippy bloke out there graffitiing the wall”

“No Andrew”, Kim explained “ he has permission and I have discussed it with Justin”

“Too late,” said Andrew “I told him to bugger off” Kim jumped up, rushing out to apologise to the artist She was half way down the corridor when Andrew called out – “only joking!”

The maintenance team are a tight knit bunch Andrew and Tammy And more recently Ben joined them as Maintenance Manager The three of them got on so well and enjoyed a wonderful working relationship

Andrew called Tammy his work wife Her very tough job was keeping Andrew in line:

“Andrew – you can’t say that!

“Andrew – lets get back to work”

“Andrew – you can’t call people Love!”

It was a tough gig. But they supported each other through the good and the bad – always with that sense of humour.

We would sit down for a serious meeting with the three of them. Invariably Andrew would get off topic and we would find ourselves laughing about one of his hair brained ideas. Ofcourse Andrew was also a member of the smokers crew! Whether it was 40C or 0C, out near the gate – or as Andrew called it – Vegas. “What’s said in Vegas stays in Vegas! The smokers code!” he would say. Andrew always made sure there were enough seats for all his fellow smokers – whether it be milk crates, old chairs or a repurposed park bench. And he always gave up his seat for someone else.

Andrew shared a lot with us. He loved Robyn and his girls and we got to know them through his sharing of life. “I love my girls” he would say. Through the football season, and especially as Carlton was doing better, he would share with us Robyn’s thoughts on Carlton. He shared his family life with us and took an interest in our own lives.

Andrew was a meticulous tradesman When he repaired something – he did it right

Contractors would be on site and Andrew would say “they were OK – but I would have done a better job” And he was right He hated people cutting corners

When he saw a job unfinished he would say “I couldn’t leave it like that” - which is why, against orders, he would pop into work on the weekend Recently some flooring was installed and Andrew noticed that they hadn’t caulked around the walls – so he came in on the weekend to finish it off – “just live around the corner – so I don’t mind”

The last time I (Justin) saw Andrew was when Ben and I went over to the student accommodation to see the bathroom renovation that Andrew had almost completed He was up the ladder with a painter’s suit on Tammy was in the kitchen putting on new door knobs after painting the cupboards

It looked amazing and I started to praise Andrew for the incredible transformation. But Andrew didn’t like too much praise and soon turned it around to banter and laughter.

But he really had done an amazing job – and he was proud of his work.

Unfortunately, the only thing he hadn’t completed was installing the towel rails. Ben and Tammy put those in – and it took them half a day. I think they measured twenty times, used 5 different drill bits to avoid chipping the tiles and had out the spirit level constantly. They knew Andrew would be watching and didn’t want to have them uneven or to crack a tile.

I suspect they were also slowed down by the tears in their eyes as they completed their good mates work.

It was a privilege for all of us at NCN Health to have known Andrew. Our lives are richer for knowing him. Andrew, you will be missed.

Some thoughts from our staff

Everyone at NCN health will have their own Andrew story which, upon reflection, will bring a smile to their face.

Andrew has a special place in Cobram, always caring about patients, residents, community and staff and he reminds us about how important it is to enjoy every day. We will miss him. The place will never be the same again.

Generous, warm, just a good bloke. Our friend.

Funny story about this photo. When we were pulling apart the old Cobram kitchen and staff dining room before the renovations, Andrew was up the ladder taking down the clock. I said, are you sure you are ok? “Trust me” was the response. But when he went to cut the clock off the wall it was hard wired and shocked him so hard he fell off the ladder.

That’s why we are laughing in this picture – that’s the clock.
