COBRAM MEDICAL CLINIC Congratulations are also in order for Cobram Medical Clinic for achieving accreditation in October from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. Many thanks to staff who have put a significant amount of work into the accreditation process, and also for your efforts in working towards quality of care, service and safety year round. KARINYA OUTBREAK

Congratulations to the Infection Control Team, nurse immunisers and to all staff across NCN Health on achieving excellent vaccination compliance rates for 2023. VICNISS (Victorian Hospital Acquired Infection Surveillance System) and the Department of Health officially acknowledged NCN Health for exceeding the Victorian compliance rate of 94% with NCN Health sitting between 98% - 100% across all our departments. These results are outstanding. Vaccination is an important tool that protects not only our workforce, but our patients, residents and community. Thank you all and well done.

The recent Karinya Nursing Home COVID outbreak has been a challenging time for staff, residents and families. All staff, both clinical and non clinical did an exceptional job providing the safest possible care during this time, whilst also managing the impact on workforce and enabling visiting and volunteers to continue for essential purposes. The provision of care, cleaning and other services is particularly demanding during an outbreak. Thank you everyone for your great work.

Jacque Phillips NCN Health CEO

RECRUITMENT PROCESS - UPDATE Did you know that NCN Health have a Recruitment and Selection procedure that provides information and guidance on the recruitment and appointment process? This ensures that appropriately skilled and qualified staff are recruited and appointed through a fair and equitable processes, that meet standards, regulatory and legislative requirements. All appointments are based on MERIT. What is Merit? The merit of a person eligible for appointment to a position is determined according to: The nature of the duties of the position and essential key selection criteria The abilities, qualifications, experience and standard of work performed of those persons relevant to those duties A fair and open process which ensures a competitive field of applicants A selection decision, which stand up to scrutiny. What is Promotion? Promotion can be obtained by: An internal applicant being successful in a role that has been advertised at a higher classification than their current role An employee’s role and responsibilities have increased, and their Position Description has been updated and reclassified to the appropriate level, and approved by the Chief Executive Officer in line with the Instrument of Delegation Procedure. So how do we recruit at NCN Health? All vacancies are advertised internally, and in most instances externally. There is an exception to this, which is that only the Chief Executive Officer and Director of People and Culture have the discretion not to advertise a role where deemed appropriate. All vacancies will appear on the NCN Careers page. Some vacancies are advertised in the newspaper and some are uploaded onto online platforms. Only applicants who apply against the advertised role through Livehire can be considered by the Hiring Manager and selection panel. This is called shortlisting. This applies to both external applicants and applicants who are current employees of NCN Health. Applicants who demonstrate that they meet the essential key selection criteria in their application will be interviewed. The interview panel consists of the hiring manager and up to two others. The panel members cannot be at the same level as the position that is being filled. All panel members must be suitably qualified to assess the candidates against the requirements of the role, guided by MERIT! The hiring manager makes a recommendation for appointment to their Manager. An offer of employment is made once the recruitment and selection process has been checked to ensure that a fair and open process has been met and the successful applicant has the abilities, qualifications and experience required to do the job.

QUALITY What are Consumer Stories? A consumer story provides individual patients and family members with the opportunity to describe their experience of health care in their own words and is considered one of the most powerful patient feedback approaches. Over time, collected stories help build a picture of what it is like for our consumers to receive healthcare or residential aged care at NCN Health. Participation is voluntary for consumers. Consumer stories are for Learning, Education, Inspiration and Media/Communications. A consumer is any patient, resident or client who use any service at NCN Health. Consumer stories can be both positive and negative and a mix of both - it is the consumers experience of our service. Stories should always be written in the consumer voice. Consumer stories can be collected at any time, though there will be a schedule for 2024 to assist in getting a range of stories across NCN departments. For more information please follow the links below Consumer Stories - Information for Consumers Consumer Stories NCN Participant Consent Form - Consumer Stories

AROUND

THE GROUNDS What happened at NCN Health in September?

NCN Netball team in action in Cobram Our very own NCN netball team has taken to the court in the Tuesday night social competition in Cobram. This diverse team comprises members from various departments, many of whom are getting to know each other through this unique experience. In the spirit of flexibility, our team undergoes weekly rotations due to the availability and shift work commitments of our dedicated players. We've even had a couple of our daughters step in to help us out when needed. The journey has been an absolute blast so far and we're pleasantly surprised by our performance. We had a 50 goal victory this week and after three games, we find ourselves in an impressive second place on the ladder! A special shout-out to our coach, Lorraine, a resident of Irvin House, who has been guiding us through this exciting adventure and is enjoying every moment of it. Looking for some Tuesday night fun? Join us for a great laugh as a spectator or bring your runners and get in on the action on the court!

You can keep an eye on the Skillzone Facebook page each week for the current ladder. If you’re around Cobram on a Tuesday evening, why not go down and cheer on the team!

Meditation and Mindfulness Program - Barmah NCN have been running a free weekly meditation/mindfulness/social connection program that provides the people living in the flood-affected community of Barmah and surrounds with skills to connect with themselves and each other, improve mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, and access wellbeing and other flood support information and resources. Each session begins with a meditation or mindfulness exercise, then is followed by time to talk and connect with each other. The sessions have been well attended, the participants are grateful for the different approach to caring for themselves, and find the mindfulness practices and conversations very therapeutic. It has been wonderful getting to know people living in and around Barmah more deeply, and it is a privilege to be able to hold space for them to process their experiences and empower them with new ways to manage their wellbeing. It would be wonderful to see new people attending these sessions at the beautiful Barmah Hall, as there is plenty of room for more – if you know of anyone who might be interested, please share the details!

Student Vitality Sessions at Cobram Anglican Grammar School Nic Wells has recently rolled out a program which is currently running at CAGS which introduces year 10 students to the benefits of looking after their mental health, teaches them about Country and ways to connect to it. Below is a snippet of info from a recent session, and a couple of pictures.

The students participated in an active session (walking meditation) to learn how to walk gently on country, and put the knowledge they gained from the previous week’s activity into practice. The land is of great significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The living environment goes beyond physical elements, and is fundamental to their identity. When we listen to the traditional custodians of the lands we are on, we can better understand how it is vital to us all, and we to it. We can all be custodians of the land. The students learnt more about how when we look after country, it looks after us. Such as, how we protect the waterways, land, native plants and animals, and how the Aboriginal people have done so for generations by having totems and caring for country in traditional ways. Learning how to connect with the land we are on is a powerful way to improve and maintain our health and wellbeing in many ways, and we did this through being n country, being more aware of what was around us and how we can walk gently, as well as through a walking meditation on the way there. In this session, we were joined by First Nations facilitators from Parks Victoria, who will take us on a journey to connect with the country around us at Quinn’s Island.

Some comments and questions I heard from the students today were: “We’re so lucky.” “Do you have a strong memory of being connected to nature?” “It’s been good being more at peace with nature, being more aware.” “It’s good to connect with all the [Indigenous] culture, and see what has happened before I was here.” “It’s good to stop and take notice, even though I’ve been here lots, I see it differently now.” I am impressed by how enthusiastic and open the students are to new experiences, like the walking meditation, and really loved their conversations around conservation! It just so happened, the day prior, they had an assembly about the environment, litter and conservation, so it was perfect timing for these conversations! The students shared what they had learnt about litter in our environment, our oceans, and our bodies! As well as ways they can themselves put pressure on companies, local government, etc, as well as take responsibility over their own behaviours and talking to others about the environment to create change. And we saw two koalas! It was a very special, peaceful morning.

CHILDREN’S WEEK Childrens week was held between October 23 - 29. Our Community Development team held events across Nathalia, Cobram, Numurkah and Katunga.

Karinya House explores tattoos In September the residents at Karinya house had a bit of fun with temporary tattoos. One of our residents and her husband went for a matching set.

We also had a local massage therapist - Nay stop by in September and give the residents head, neck, shoulder and feet massages. We’re looking forward to her return once we are out of COVID lockdown.

Friends of Karinya held their annual cake stall in October - once again it was a smashing success! Check out some of the offerings.

Quality Department Resignation It is with sadness that we will soon be saying goodbye to Michelle Butler who has resigned from her role as Director Quality, Risk and Performance. Michelle commenced working at NCN Health in August 2021 and has supported the Quality Risk and Performance department and organisation through some significant milestones for NCN Health. This has included National Standards and Aged Care accreditations, developing and implementing a new risk management system and helped develop the Clinical Governance Quality and Safety systems across NCN Health. Michelle has a strong commitment to patient/resident and client experience and safe and quality care and we wish her well in her new role as Executive Director Quality, Safety and Patient Experience at Northeast Health Wangaratta. Michelle’s last day will be Friday November 10. We will work with Michelle and her team to make arrangements to cover and support the department whilst we recruit to this position. Congratulations Michelle on your new role and thank you for your contribution to NCN Health. You will be missed!
