Of Shorts and Sunshine

W

ho’s ready for some warm weather? Yes, me too. It sets in every year about this time: serious cabin fever and an overwhelming desire to put away the sweaters and unpack the shorts and T-shirts. Spring is a true joy in Colorado as grass turns green, trees get leafy and everyone—and I mean everyone—is outside and happily soaking in our glorious sunshine. We’re also cleaning up and digging in our yards, anticipating the appearance of perennial blooms and firing up the grill. That’s why it’s always great fun to put together our annual Outdoor Living issue. The patios, decks and verandas that surround our featured homes will make you rethink your own outdoor spaces, and if you are so inspired, you’ll want to take a look at all the wonderfully whimsical furnishings and accessories we’ve discovered in our “Finds” section (beginning on page 21). Once you’ve placed that last deck chair, we invite you to sit in the sunshine and indulge in our interviews with cowboy artist Duke Beardsley (page 29) and entrepreneur/philanthropist Jeremy Bloom (page 35). Both articles will remind you that the people who call Colorado home are as glorious as the climate. Cheers,

My Current Obsessions

Outdoor Chandeliers: And speaking of candlelight, what’s more romantic than a chandelier? I’m completely enamored with the wide range of outdoor lighting available, and these votive shades from Birdsall & Co. are easy to install virtually anywhere. birdsallgarden.com Fun Fabrics: I’m perfectly happy with my outdoor dining set, but the chair cushions are still the original solid-colored burnt orange. I think it’s time to up the excitement factor with some bright patterns. This new line from Dallas-based manufacturer Link Outdoor is just the ticket, with graphic lines and great colorways. I might even do a little mixing and matching. linkoutdoor.com 12

Candlelight: Colorado evenings are sublime, and that’s really my favorite time to entertain outdoors. Candles make everyone look and feel fabulous, so I like to incorporate as much soft, flickering light as possible. These charming candle holders from Arteriors will work on the table, a plant stand or even right on the ground. arteriorshome.com

Duke Beardsley, Scoop, oil, 32 x 60

Of Cowboys and Color Fields For as long as there have been cowboys driving cattle, there has been Western Art—much of it residing safely in the Realists’ camp. But Denver artist Duke Beardsley approaches the genre with his own contemporary spin, dropping rugged, anonymous cowboys and their trusty steeds into fields of vermilion, amber or indigo, where they rope, ride, brand—even check their cell phones. Beardsley, a fifth-generation Coloradan who spent much of his childhood at his family’s Douglas County ranch, explains his boldly modern approach to the West’s most beloved icon B y Hilary Masell Oswald CH&L: Your studio is fantastic.

Duke Beardsley: Thanks. I love it. We built it about six years ago. Sometimes, I need to paint late at night, and we have two girls, so it’s good to be close to home. Are your daughters artists?

Yes, as all kids are. We have one who is a Realist and one who is an Abstract Expressionist. Go figure. I teach [painting to] kids here, kids who show promise, whose teachers pull them aside and say, ‘You have something special.’ Those kids find their way to me. A few of my students are now teenagers, and I’m seeing them edit themselves, and I try to fight against that. I say to them, ‘No matter what the forces outside this studio say, what do you feel here and now, in this place?’ It’s good for all of us.

Speaking of young artists, when did you realize you could make art a career?

30

COLORADOHOMESMAG.COM

I had planned to stay in California and work in the entertainment industry after attending art school in Pasadena, but just as I was finishing school, a gallery got a hold of me and said, ‘Let’s have a show in Denver.’ I thought, ‘An art show, how fun! Let’s try this for a summer!’ Now it’s been 15 years. There were other moments. When I enrolled in art school [after earning a degree in art history from Middlebury College and taking some pre-med courses at Claremont College], a dear friend of mine from Denver said, ‘Did you hear the collective sigh of relief from our friends when you went to art school?’ I guess they saw this impulse in me before I acknowledged it. The truth is that any time an opportunity to show my work popped up and people responded well, it felt like an ‘aha’ moment. The acquisition [of Against the Bit and Burnin Rubber in 2008] by the Denver Art Museum was huge for me. I spent so much time thinking, ‘Don’t screw this up!’ that

I hardly believed it. I still go into the museum and see those pieces and think, ‘This is so cool!’ I never take anything for granted. I have to get up early and keep painting. I try to honor [this work]. I’m grateful for it. Your work puts a distinctively contemporary and colorful spin on Western motifs. Where does that modern impulse come from?

I grew up with an IV of Charlie Russell and Frederic Remington in my arm. Apparently, when I was very young, I told my mom that I wanted to meet Frederic Remington. I was devastated when she told me he’d been gone for decades. I had a book of his, and the stories connected to me—peril and adventure! I was hooked. When I was little, our version of ranching made a big mark on me. It was very intimate. The iconography that I celebrate is still deeply embedded inside me. It was a very personal, familial experience. At the same time, I had one foot in my family’s ranch and one in suburban Denver. We spent weekends and holidays at this ranch where

my dad and grandfather and uncle had a cattle business. The modernity broke in during college. I took a lot of art history courses and spent a lot of time at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and going to New York when I could. I had my Abstract Expressionist side opened up. And then in art school, my teachers—guys like Ray Turner and Scott Hess—said to me, ‘This impulse is already in you.’ I was encouraged to look at my icons, and the question was, ‘Do you want to be the next anybody, or do you want to be the first you?’ Why do you think the image of the cowboy is so compelling, even to us city-dwellers?

I don’t know. I just work here. [Laughs.] I’m teasing. Maybe [the image’s appeal] is what I’m trying to figure out. It’s a familiar romance for me. I love to ride; I always have. I’ve got horses in town, horses in the mountains. It’s pretty steeped in personal identity for me. Does riding matter to your art?

Yes. I can’t put a metric on it in terms of

art what it means to the art—more time on horseback means better art? I don’t know. But it means everything to me in making the art. It’s a great distraction because you’re riding a real living thing. There’s nothing better than moving through open country on the back of a moving horse. It slows everything down.

duke beardsley, riding drag, sepia etching on white bfk paper, 20 x 15.75 inches

How do you decide what to paint? Do you wake up in the morning with an image in your mind?

Sometimes. More often than not, an image is a result of a lot of things. There are a couple of rules I’ve established for myself. First, I try not to pre-sketch them. I try to work them out impulsively on the canvas. Second, I have to have seen it or done it in the last six months. And third, ideally, someone is on the phone. On the phone?

These big ranchers are on the phone all the time. Just last week, I went riding at a ranch, and we gathered in a pasture six times the size of my family’s ranch. [The ranchers] are communicating via phone and text the whole time: ‘Did you check that area? Do we need water over there?’ This is my attempt at making the art current. The icons may be ageless, but they’re also of this era.

Duke Beardsley, Rooster moon, oil, 56 x 42 inches

Do you worry about compromising the romanticism a bit? Yes, and I have to tell that worry to shut up. This is our modern West. There’s an aesthetic I’m conscious of, but I have to be true to what I see, too. There’s a lot left to see, we’re guessing. Could you do this work for the rest of your life? I’m planning on it. I love the idea of being in my 70s or 80s and still painting. I have a friend who tells me, ‘You are wholly unemployable.’ So this had better work out.

Colorado’s Superman For Jeremy Bloom, elite athlete and rising tech industry star, the missing piece of “having it all” was discovering the satisfaction of giving back

ew people can claim worldclass success in their chosen field, but Jeremy Bloom has managed to conquer the worlds of both sports and business, while launching a stellar non-profit at the same time—all before the age of 30. It all started on the mountain. “My grandfather was my first ski instructor and I developed an incredibly strong bond with him,” says Bloom, a threetime World Champion freestyle skier, two-time Olympian and member of the United States Skiing Hall of Fame. “He would pin a superman cape on me and throw miniature candy bars down the slope.”

In addition to being a champion skier, Bloom, a Loveland native, became an All-American football player at the University of Colorado before playing in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He somehow also found time to earn a degree from the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. From there, Bloom went on to found Integrate, an online advertising and marketing software company that has attracted clients like Microsoft and Yahoo. In 2011, Forbes Magazine named Jeremy Bloom to its list of the “thirty most influential people in technology.” This prestigious annual list spotlights executives and innovators under age 30 who are expected to become “tomorrow’s brightest stars.” But even those fulfilled dreams weren’t enough for Bloom. “My biggest fear was that I was going to be worthless to society after athletics, and that literally kept me up at night,” Bloom confesses. During one of those sleepless nights, Bloom came up with an idea that would eventually become Wish of a Lifetime Foundation. Inspired by his maternal grandmother, who lived with his family during his youth, Bloom has long been sensitive to the role of the elderly in society. “When I made the U.S. Ski Team [at age fifteen, the youngest-ever male freestyle Olympian], I began to travel around the world and I could see that other cultures treated their elders differently than we do—with reverence and respect.” While justifiably proud of his business success, Bloom’s eyes really light up when he talks about the foundation, which he established in 2008 to grant lifelong wishes to seniors in their 80s, 90s and 100s. In that first year, the foundation granted seven wishes. This year, the Denver-based foundation is

What does “style” mean to you? Maybe this is not exactly the hip answer you were hoping for, but I believe that style is very individualized and depends on being comfortable in your own skin. When you travel, what’s in your carry-on? My laptop, which has my work on it and also stores all my music, and, of course, noise-cancelling headphones. On my cell phone, I rely on the Uber app, an on-demand, location-based car service. Your favorite eateries in Colorado? Breakfast at Snooze, where I always order a healthy omelet but usually I’ll also order a side of pancakes or French toast. For dinner, Ocean Prime. I love their fresh seafood. Your favorite ski run? Ambush in Keystone, where I learned to ski. My father taught me the moguls there.

You were a two-time Olympian but never brought home the gold medal. What did you learn from the experience? I’ve learned a great deal more from the points of adversity in my life than the times of success. In order to be a champion, you need to learn from failure. Use defeat and leverage it. And never let yourself be defined by it. You went to Sochi as a correspondent for NBC. Give us your impressions. I am very thankful that NBC gives me such a great role at the Olympics. I cover the human-interest stories— to show what happens between the times when an athlete is competing on-camera. Maybe I’m always looking on the bright side, but I found the people in Sochi to be friendly, the venues spectacular and the accommodations very comfortable.

on track to fund nearly 400. “Our goal is to say ‘thank you’ to a generation that pulled us through the Great Depression, fought in World War II and, quite literally, paved our roads and shaped the world we live in,” Bloom explains. He says that he is constantly surprised by the modesty of the requests. No one asks for a high-end car or a designer dress. The wishes are for a greenhouse, a trip to see the grandkids or a soft rug to cover a cold linoleum floor. One of Bloom’s favorite wishes was that of a World War II hero who “went over [to the war in Europe] with a crew of 144 men, came back with only seven and wanted, one last time, to put his footprint in the sand on Omaha Beach.” The former soldier had also met his wife in France, and they wanted to renew their vows—after 65 years—in a little church near Omaha Beach. Wish of a Lifetime Foundation arranged the trip and even a small wedding reception afterwards—something that the couple couldn’t afford the first time around. “It was all very lovely and very French and I think we all cried…with happiness,” says Bloom, a gifted champion who now knows what it really means to win.

High Rise

Horticulture Denver Dirty Girls may sound like a rough-and-tumble roller-derby team, but it’s actually the name of a mild-mannered (yet wildly creative) mother-daughter garden design duo By Laura Beausire Photography by Povy Kendal Atchison

hen Sheila Schultz relocated from Illinois to Colorado, she was already an expert on the subject of potted plants. But she had little experience working with succulents and cacti, both of which she quickly discovered were ideally suited to growing in containers in the dry Colorado climate. Now she specializes in such containers. Joined by her daughter Laurel Startzel, an interior designer with gardening roots, Schultz’s company, Denver Dirty Girls, has flourished with this self-proclaimed motto: “Is it art? Is it gardening? It’s both!” That hybrid outlook allows the pair to approach every project with a well-stocked toolbox: an understanding of how scale, proportion, texture, color and movement function as fundamentally intertwined design elements in a successful landscape. A recent project illustrates just how good that toolbox is: The owner of this 11th floor condo in Denver’s chic Pinnacle tower had recently moved to the city from a home in the mountains, and he missed being surrounded by forest scenery. He asked Denver Dirty Girls to warm up his west-facing 500-square-foot balcony space with plenty of green. With an interior designer’s eye, Startzel knew it was essential that the outdoor plantings flow with the furniture, artwork and colors of the indoor spaces, since virtually the entire western wall of the condo is glass and the balcony is clearly visible. “We chose plants and pots with a masculine feel, rich with texture, quiet but dramatic in subdued shades of burgundy, green and silver,” explains Startzel. This effect is one of the design team’s strengths. Schultz laughingly admits that their approach makes them “the queens of subtle,” remarking that “everything has to play well together, and a comforting color line has to go through everything.” The unusual demands of high-rise living required special planting considerations. First, it was important that the containers be low-maintenance. Since the balcony lacks an outdoor source of water, each pot has to be watered by hand. And, Startzel notes, “foliage (opposite) A big, bare wall could have been a design nightmare, but Schultz and Startzel placed a bold row of potted yuccas (water-saving succulents that can tolerate full sun) against the backdrop. Their strong lines create striking silhouettes. Low-maintenance plants, like succulents and cacti, are good choices for water-conscious homeowners or those who travel frequently. (right) This green and gorgeous balcony is now a luxurious space for entertaining or kicking back at the end of the day, high above the hustle and bustle of the city.

The homeowner of this Denver condo asked Denver Dirty Girls to recreate the feeling of being surrounded by gardens and trees without the plantings feeling fussy or obscuring his view. The designers softened the hard lines of the 500-square-foot balcony while creating a “masculine mood with plants that are rich in texture and color, emphasizing shades of burgundy, green and silver for quiet drama.

Tips from the Denver Dirty Girls:

Choosing and Arranging Containers

(this page, above) Layering different shapes and sizes of containers for contrast can help define a space. Recipe for planting Short round: Jade plant (overwintered inside) Tall pot: Pennisetum rubrum Dicondra ‘Silver Falls’ Kalanchoe, Lysimachia Square bronze: Euphorbia ‘Candelabra’ Lysimachia Sedum Nussbaumerianum Echeveria ‘Black Prince’ Sedum ‘Dragon’s Blood’ 50

(this page, right) The homeowner originally wanted a water feature as a focal point, but he and the designers couldn’t locate one that was just right. Instead, they chose a gorgeous, nearly five-foot-tall Vietnamese pot planted with a large, spiky cactus as a statement piece. Recipe for planting Low Pots: Tri-color geraniums Lysimachia ‘Aurea’ Sedum ‘Angelina’ Yuccas Tall pot: Euphorbia Grandicornus Black-eyed Susans Variegated vinca

Quality: Take plenty of time to choose the right container. The pots themselves are pieces of art! Spend money on a good pot from the start, because it will last you many years. We really like Vietnamese pots because they can withstand the freeze/thaw issues we face in Colorado. Materials: There are so many different kinds of planting pots and containers, and they get more interesting all the time. We like ceramic of course, and fiberglass containers are wonderful if you need to move them around, but they should not be used in high-wind environments. There are also some amazing metal and concrete containers. Size and Scale: Proportion is extremely important when it comes to container design. Large containers make a visual impact; tiny pots tend to get lost. And sometimes just one container isn’t enough of a ‘wow’ factor; make it a trio. Don’t be afraid to step back and really look at the surroundings to make sure the container is the appropriate shape, size and color for the space. Placement: Laying out containers for a space is very similar to a furniture arrangement. Placing the containers where they can be seen from several viewpoints is great, but make sure to keep walkways free and clear from trip hazards. And when designing the container garden, make sure also to keep in mind how large each plant will get. Ask yourself this when layering plants. Place the tallest toward the back so you get a nice waterfall effect.

plants are generally lower maintenance since you don’t have to remove spent flowers in order for the plants to thrive.” Each plant was also carefully chosen to withstand the full glare of the Colorado sun. And then there was the wind. “Depending on the day, it can be a safe haven, or you feel like you’re on the set of ‘Wizard of Oz’ in the twister scene!” Startzel recalls. Some pots needed to be weighted so they wouldn’t take flight. In the end, the Denver Dirty Girls agree that good design always comes down to aesthetic comfort. “We try to make it as interesting and dramatic as possible, but to have a comfortable feel about it,” Schultz says. “For me, being surrounded by plants has always brought comfort.” Startzel wisely adds, “From my perspective, if you love nature, that desire doesn’t stop if you live in a condo or a house.” There’s no reason not to have a perfectly heavenly garden perched way up in the city sky. A random-patterned, tightly jointed flagstone walkway leads from the driveway to the main entry on the side of the house, blending with the colors of the stacked stone entry columns. Designer Greg Comstock used a limited color range—three shades of gray—for the home’s exterior, then softened the cool hue with wood accents. “Ipe wood warms the gray and provides a natural element which punctuates the whole façade,” he explains.

Mid-Century Marvel An iconic modern home shines once again with a renovation that lives in the present while respecting the integrity of the past

f anyone should live in a midcentury modern home, it is Traci Lounsbury. As a principal owner of Elements, a commercial office furnishings business in downtown Denver, she is constantly exposed to high-end design. “I see the most beautiful finishes and furniture. I’m surrounded by inspiration,” says Lounsbury, who is especially drawn to iconic furniture designed by architects such as Eero Saarinen.

New exterior landscaping—also designed by Comstock—enhances the architecture, while owner Traci Lounsbury selected xeric plants that thrive with southern exposure. A light and airy “front porch” offers plenty of seating from which to enjoy the gardens. (right) The handblown Infinity Cluster glass light fixture is by John Pomp through Town Studio. (this page, top) Ideal for entertaining, the front patio features a dining table and chairs from Knoll (available through Elements) and a charming lounging area with JANUS et Cie chairs surrounding an Essex firepit. (this page, above) Laminate cabinets and stainless steel countertops by Poggenpohl, installed twenty years ago, have timeless modern appeal. Comstock repeated the ipe wood design of the front door in columns throughout the house. Oversized pendants by John Pomp match the motif of the entry light fixture. 54

Floor-to-ceiling windows and a massive stone fireplace make dramatic design statements in the living room. “The fireplace says so much about the period of this house,” says Comstock, who updated it with a gas insert and stainless steel backing. Glowing stones, rather than wood, give the fireplace a contemporary edge. The custom sectional is accented by a Noguchi coffee table, Baker floor lamp, and Norman Epp’s wood sculpture, Burl-esque, available through Walker Fine Art. 55

The clean lines of the contemporary table and light fixture allow the Frank Gehry-designed Hat Trick Chairs from Knoll to take center stage in the dining room. The delicate railings are brushed stainless steel. 56

I thought about selling, but decided to stay and renovate, doing it right this time. I wanted the house to be nicer, better, feel warmer.

—Traci Lounsbury

Lounsbury’s home, designed by mid-century Denver architect H. Albert Phibbs for his own family in 1961, is perched high on a bluff in suburban Arvada, offering equally impressive views of the mountains and Denver’s cityscape. When Lounsbury purchased the house twenty years ago, it had fallen into disrepair, so she hired interior designer Greg Comstock, of Comstock Design, to open up some walls and make limited cosmetic changes “on a dime.” Fast forward to the present, and the house is facing issues that need to be addressed after 52 years. “I thought about selling, but decided to stay and renovate, doing it right this time,” says Lounsbury. “I wanted the house to be nicer, better, feel warmer.” She invited Comstock to return, along with colleagues Ashley Jacobs and Suzanne Kisner, to once again transform the tired house. “I told Traci, ‘Let’s really get this house back to something you enjoy coming home to again,’” Comstock recalls. Comstock wore many hats during the renovation. He tackled architectural design issues to update the façade and landscape plans that upped the curb appeal, ever mindful of retaining the home’s mid-century integrity. To start, he replaced a series of cage-like metal supports in front with three hefty dry-stacked stone columns. “I wanted something that balanced the expansive windows on the other side of the house,” Comstock says, remarking, “The columns are almost sculptural in nature.” Then the team replaced the windows and added glass-and-aluminum garage doors, expanded the deck, and replaced deteriorating hardscape with an organic sweep of driveway, a flagstone walkway and fresh, alpine-inspired landscaping. Comstock also made some striking upgrades to the home’s interior. He started by designing a new front door of ipe wood to fit into matching paneling above, giving the illusion of a 15-foot-high door. The design is repeated on interior wood columns, creating a strong cohesive design element and rich coloration. “Where Greg added the most value was bringing warmth into my contemporary home with the finish palette,” says Lounsbury. Two strong design elements in the living room—floor-to-ceiling windows and a massive stone fireplace—were retained, but with a stunning contemporary twist. “The fireplace is really classic mid-century modern,” Lounsbury says. “The

Landscape Lessons

Interior designer Greg Comstock and homeowner Traci Lounsbury worked together to integrate the new front yard landscape into the home’s overall design. Older plants were rejuvenated with pruning, and new hardscape and plantings were blended in. Comstock provided the basic design and offers these tips:

n Use landscaping to enhance architecture, such as the tall grasses planted strategically to highlight the stacked stone columns. n Think about shape – either repeat the lines of the house or create more interest with contrast. Here, the rectilinear lines of the house stand out when played against the more free-flowing curves of the landscape. n Use decorative items in a practical way, such as the stacked stone pillar that contains the mailbox. n Create a sense of balance, keeping taller plants in back or to the side to frame the house; place lower plants toward the front.

new steel insert blends old and new.” The furnishings, which the homeowner and designer selected together, are gems of classic mid-century and contemporary design that feel at one with the house. Fortunately, the modern European-style kitchen and indoor steel railings added in the first renovation have stood the test of timeless design, and work seamlessly with the new improvements. Lounsbury is thrilled with her decision to stay in the house. More than ever, the home fits her lifestyle and design aesthetic. “Given a choice between going out and staying home, I would much rather stay home,” she says. “And now my house supports that.”

(opposite) An ipe wood column conceals steel supports and provides balance in the office area. Eero Saarinen’s iconic Tulip Table pops against the strong blue color in Danny Williams’ Aquarius (from Walker Fine Art) and a fused-glass sculpture from Charles Eisen & Associates. (this page, top and above) The design team expanded the deck significantly, allowing more space for entertaining and relaxing—Lounsbury particularly enjoys the sounds of the waterfall below. Slim, powder-coated steel railings replaced heavy wooden rails. A storage shed and retaining wall were clad in the same stone as the home’s exterior columns for continuity. The pond is one of two on the property; a waterfall flows between them.

hen the homeowners of this Polo Club home moved from Colorado Springs to Denver, they had a clear vision of what they wanted: a new home that looked like it had always been a part of the exclusive Denver neighborhood. But they also wanted comfort for themselves, two grown children, guests, a collection of heirloom furnishings and art and, last but certainly not least, eight beloved felines. The result, after purchasing and demolishing an existing home, is a palatial estate that harkens back to the grandeur of the area’s 1920’s roots.

For a project of this magnitude, the couple brought together some of the most experienced design professionals in the state, starting with architect Don Ruggles. As the president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, this was the perfect assignment. “The homeowners already had a fine collection of art and antiques, which was carefully curated from their former home. Considering the pieces, a plan for the home was developed to create authentic beauty that respected the period of the neighborhood’s birth.” For the interior design and finishes, Ruggles referred the couple to Eric Mandil and his team at Mandil, Inc.; custom home builder Jeremy Larson of Montare Builders was selected from a bounty of bids. challenged with creating a formal landscape design that looked as established as the home itself. “The goal was to make it look like it was the first house on the street, and we all worked together and created a sort of a guild,” explains Mandil. “We became a true collaborative force, and because the homeowners were so open to our ideas, we were able to create an exceptional piece of architecture.” Proper attention was also paid to the lawns and gardens. “We carried the 1920s feel outdoors with salvaged pieces, a water feature and mature, old-fashioned plants like boxwoods and roses,” says Troy Shimp of Lifescape Colorado. “And we didn’t remove any existing trees, so that also gives the yard an established feel.” As in the interior, symmetry and formality prevail. The home’s craftsmanship and attention to period detail are exceptional. Columns, capitals and other architectural elements were salvaged from local dealers such as Black Tulip Antiques and Eron Johnson Antiques. New wood was meticulously hand-distressed or crackle-painted to look old. And although the home is large, the rooms are comfortably human-scaled. “It doesn’t feel ostentatious,” says Mandil. “It’s eclectic, with quirky, authentic spaces.” After the completion of this nearly three-year project, the family was able to move in just in time to enjoy the 2012 holidays. And there was rejoicing all around. “It will go down as one of my favorite projects,” says Mandil. “The owners are fun people with strong personalities, and the home reflects them. It was a treat to create this authentic, timeless home.”

A special thank you to all who contributed to the 2014 Home & Lifestyle Show living kitchen: William Ohs Miele Caesarstone Countertops by Artistic Fabrications Denver Glass Interiors Denver Hardware Galleria of Stone

when it comes to modern yet warm kitchens, this one sets the standard—a handcrafted, fully functional design by William Ohs, created to set the stage for CH&L’s 2014 Home & Lifestyle Show, presented by Coldwell Banker and held March 14 - 16, 2014. Led by veteran kitchen designer Nabeel Faizi, the team at William Ohs worked after hours, raising the kitchen piece by piece in the newlyrenovated Grand Court of Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Then the experts at Miele outfitted the kitchen with top-grade “smart” appliances. The results? Spectacular. CH&L would like to thank all who contributed: the suppliers who offered their expertise and products, the chefs and presenters who made the kitchen sing, and the Denver Hospice volunteers who graciously gave their time and enthusiasm.

A dramatic wall contains a Miele wine chiller, fridge/freezer; porcelain floor tile was installed by Guy’s Floor Service and Italian stone supports the island.

Kohler’s Karbon brushed bronze faucet is paired with a stainless copper sink from Rohl. The island’s countertop is Emperadoro Caesarstone.

Miele’s Whole Bean Coffee System, from the new Brilliant White Plus series, creates the perfect cup every time. The curved sconce is by William Ohs.

A sleek alternative to the classic china cabinet, this William Ohs’ display unit features steel-framed glass doors, illuminated glass shelves and lots of storage.

William Ohs’ deep drawers feature a new customizable pan storage system that puts an end to digging through stacks to find the matching lid.

This new pantry drawer storage keeps spices, oils and often-used ingredients neat, organized and close at hand. Glassfront cabinetry makes cleaning a snap.

Antolini’s Striato Olimpico marble, from Galleria of Stone (and cut to perfection by Artistic Fabrications), provides a stunning base for the Miele cooktop.

The display unit’s textured leatherwrapped cabinetry provides luxurious silver storage. The modern silver drawer pulls are from Denver Hardware.

THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS AWAIT YOU AND WORLD-CLASS DOUGLAS COUNTY SCHOOLS, Pines and Castle Pines Village a True FUELING UPTICK. Castle Colorado Gem Currently available for $3,650,000.00 | Photo credit: Rockin’ Media

coloradohomes.com

By Margaret Jackson Mountain topography, high elevations offering incredible views, great schools and the golf courses are big draws that have many buyers looking for homes in the Castle Pines area. The City Of Castle Pines and Castle Pines Village is located just 15 minutes south of the Denver Tech Center. These upscale residential communities have seen an uptick in the housing market since the end of the Great Recession with buyers relocating from across the nation.

Castle Pines Village, developed on approximately 3,000 acres, is one of the few truly gated communities in metropolitan Denver offering a luxurious lifestyle hard to match anywhere. The homes currently available in Castle Pines Village range from $525,000 to $10,000,000. Just outside the gates is a small retail area including boutique shops and Tony’s Market. The City of Castle Pines covers about 6,000 acres and the homes available in the city range from $262,000 to $2,500,000. It is here where the community’s restaurants, schools, banks and grocery stores are located. Regarding home options, “These are beautiful homes in beautiful settings,” Lee said. “It’s like being in the mountains, but I can be at my office in the Denver Tech Center in 15 minutes.”

Currently available for $2,350,000.00 | Photo credit: Rockin’ Media

“The market has improved tremendously since the downturn,” said Louie Lee, independent associate broker affiliated with Coldwell Banker Southeast, who specializes in the Castle Pines market. The Castle Pines area is made up of two communities in Douglas County that complement each other well; Castle Pines Village and The City of Castle Pines.

Currently available for $1,745,000.00 | Photo credit: Rockin’ Media

One of the most important choices families with children make is what school district to locate in, and Lee says that buyers who used to be interested in homes in the Cherry Creek School District are now looking more closely at the Douglas County Louie & Melanie Lee School District.

Located within the gates of Castle Pines Village is The Country Club at Castle Pines, one of the premier country clubs in the Denver metro area. With an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet on the edge of a cliff, there are unobstructed views of 150 miles of the Front Range. The 7,400-yard “WE HAVE WHAT’S CONSIDERED THE Jack Nicklaus Signature Championship golf TOP PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN THE course is woven into the natural contours of STATE,” LEE SAID. “PEOPLE ARE ASKING the land, through ponderosa pine forest and FOR ROCK CANYON HIGH SCHOOL rugged mountain terrain. “I think it’s one of the prettiest golf settings you can find in the WHEN STEPPING OFF THE PLANE.” region,” Lee said. There is also a wonderful public golf experience at The Ridge at Castle Pines For more information about these communities, please visit www.castlepinesrealestate.com. North and is located in the City Of Castle Pines.

A Grand Old Stage Leadville’s Tabor Opera House has a fabled history and an uncertain future

I

By Laura Beausire

t only took 100 days to build Leadville’s iconic Tabor Opera House, but its fame has now lasted well over 100 years. The history of this remarkable performance venue is tied up with the legacy of Horace and Baby Doe Tabor, two of Colorado’s most famous and fascinating historical characters—whose tangled and tragic boom-and-bust story has itself inspired a successful opera, “The Ballad of Baby Doe.” In the 1870s, Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a grocer, postmaster and the first mayor of Leadville, the highest incorporated town in America, at 10,152 feet elevation. Tabor’s silver mine investments coincided with the great Colorado Silver Boom and turned him into a multi-millionaire. In 1879 the civic-minded “Silver King” financed the building of the Tabor Opera House for the citizens of Leadville, whose population swelled to a high of 30,000 in its heyday. The magnificent three-story stone, brick and iron opera house was built to last, with 16-inch-thick, solid-brick walls. Because the required construction materials were not available in Leadville, Tabor directed workers to haul them up over Mosquito Pass by wagon. The first floor of the building was devoted

128

to retail spaces, the second floor housed the theater, and the third floor, supported by the theater’s 60-foot-long timber roof trusses, was divided into 25 rooms belonging to the adjacent Clarendon Hotel. The new Tabor Opera House was lauded as “the most perfect place of amusement between Chicago or St. Louis and San Francisco.” The interior of the theater was a marvel, with 72 jets of gaslight illuminating richly painted walls, a frescoed ceiling, carpets and curtains in dazzling colors. Audiences in the remote mountain community settled into plush red velvet seats to witness some of the era’s finest entertainers and speakers, including Oscar Wilde, Harry Houdini, John Philip Sousa and Sarah Bernhardt. Despite roof improvements made possible by State Historical Fund Grants, the Tabor Opera House is currently for sale and in need of rehabilitation. Until a savior steps onto the stage to purchase the fine old theater, the Tabor Opera House Preservation Foundation is gathering donations to further renovations and upkeep. And the show still goes on: 2014 events and information at taboroperahouse.net.
