Westerngrace

Twin M is a coincidental collaboration. Jill Moriarty had been creating her “Bell Mare” merino sweater designs for one year, and Matt Moran had ventured from making saddles to totes and belts. They found inspiration in one another’s designs and began creating a “New West” look, completely sourced and finished in the West.

After graduating from design school, Westerngrace founder Jesse Call designed for Cruel Girl and then interned with the “Rhinestone Rembrandt”, Manuel. Now, Call is now making her own mark in western apparel—apparel made of fine quality fabrics, handmade patterns and hand-stitching in every garment. Her clothing evokes the Western spirit and culture, from working cowboys to history-making cowgirls. And, as only the West would have it, Westerngrace is proudly made in Colorado, USA.

Her gold and silverwork is inspired by Wyoming pack trips. Versatility, skill, and meticulous attention to detail allow Susan to design and produce unique decorative objects, jewelry, hollowware, and commissioned projects, such as the cowgirl logo for The National Cowgirl Museum. Susan is a three-time award winner at the Western Design Conference.

Growing up as the son of antique dealers in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jack had the opportunity to examine early Pueblo and Navajo jewelry, and even earlier pieces from their Spanish mentors. He created his line of unique stamped ID bracelets combined with leather, and the rest is history. Will’s Dreams Unique Leather Art

Keith Seidel began his leatherworking career at the age of 12, working at the boot shop in his hometown of Cody, Wyoming. He has studied under dozens of saddle makers and built hundreds of saddles during his career. Colorado blacksmith Craig hails from Deming, New Mexico. He successfully shoed horses until a demonstration at a conference drove him to pursue the craft of blacksmithing with a new passion. Craig visualizes designs that he is then able to hammer and fire into 3-D works of functional art. He is inspired by nature, architecture, his fellow craftsmen and most of all, the clients who motivate him to create something beautiful, original and unique.

History is what inspires Garry’s work and he labors to preserve it through his metal sculptures. Garry, a retired rancher from the Sand Hills of Nebraska has always been an artist. He has worked with many mediums, but for the past 17 years life size metal sculptures have been his passion. This has given him a great deal of creative freedom and plenty of ideas to upgrade his style of furniture.

Old Roots

Railyard Studios Ryan Cole is a cancer diagnostician by day and a father of six daughters by night. His own private Idaho “man cave” allows escape into the rightbrained beauty of life. Expressed through original designs with exclusively local and reclaimed materials, the old becomes new. A steady flow of striking originality emanates from the “cave,” which settles the mind and brings lasting beauty to others.

We are artisans, but we are also hard working railroaders. We’ve sweat on the tracks with a shovel in our hands and the sound of a spiking hammer ringing in our ears. We take pride in our work. And it is with pride that we pass it from our hands to yours.

Sabi Woods

Jon Roberts retired from a 35year career as a high school biology and art teacher. He has always had a great appreciation for life and the beauty and design in nature. He made his first burl wood table some 45 years ago. Through the years, he has collected some great pieces; those for the WDC are the most exceptional in character, wood grain, and size that he has ever seen or produced.

Born in 1972, Vance is a sixthgeneration Coloradan. He began building rustic furniture in 1995, but was unsatisfied with the limitations of traditional techniques. Over the years, he has developed a new method of joining tree branches to create this new chair style, also adding hand-tooled leather upholstery.

Ron designs using native woods such as aspen and lodgepole pine married with ideas from traditional furniture styles. Elements such as burled logs for claw feet and curved limbs for Queen Anne legs are likely to show up in a WildeWood design. Further inspiration comes from nature, Ron says. “I may be driving along and see a tree with an interesting limb or shape, and I’ll design a creation around that particular piece of wood.”

Retired science teacher Walter Wogee started his one-man shop, WoodArt, in 2009, after enjoying a lifelong love of woodworking. He primarily creates Sam Maloof style rockers, and was inspired and mentored by his father, who could make or do just about anything. Wogee’s awards include 2009 Best Wood and Best in Show awards in Lake Arrowhead, California, and awards for two chairs at the prestigious 2011 Design in Wood Exhibition at the San Diego County Fair.

The 2014 WDC Exhibit + Sale debuts the inaugural Designer Show House STORY BY SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

The 2014 Western Design Conference Exhibit + Sale includes many new changes to the longstanding and esteemed show in Jackson Hole. This year the show will incorporate a stronger focus on home and fashion. One of the most significant additions this year includes the Designer Show House on the exhibit floor. Montana woodworker and builder Justin Palmer will create a timber-framed home including shingles made from cedar that was part of The Big Burn in 1910. “I’ve held onto this red cedar root for years waiting for the right project, and this is it,” says Palmer. Designers will display not only their own talents and wares in the rooms, but one-of-a-kind pieces by exhibiting artists will also be incorporated into the spaces. With a strong and diverse group of participants, the Designer Show House promises to add an exciting spark to the show.

the West and an unexpected mix of western, classic, and modern elements suffused with inviting colors, Stockton & Shirk create exceptional spaces reflecting each client’s personal style. Fighting Bear Antiques has been a fixture in Jackson since opening in 1981. With a focus on Thomas Molesworth furniture, the shop carries rustic and Western furniture. Owner Terry Winchell is the author of two books, including Molesworth: The Pioneer of Western Design. Run by Terry and his wife Claudia, the shop has expanded to carry Native American decorative arts as well as historical Western and wildlife art.

FIGHTING BEAR ANTIQUES

The New West Owner Kate Binger opened Dwelling in Jackson in 2011 to reflect her design style of “Transitional Eclectic.” Having lived in California, Binger quickly learned the value of researching all aspects of design. She travels throughout the year and finds inspiration in a myriad of styles. Clean lines, rich textures, and vibrant pops of color are Binger’s signature elements. Dwelling is a boutique gift, furniture and interior design studio specializing in new construction, remodels, furnishings, artwork and accessories. The featured artwork is provided by a local Jackson gallery, Astoria Fine Art.

BallouDawg’s design style and philosophy include organic elements, and range from modern rustic to the unexpected. Their creations include furniture, functional art and sculpture, many of which incorporate unique accents such as copper and antler. Linda Rumsey’s father was a blackjack dealer at The Wort Hotel, and today she and her husband Ryan continue the family’s long association with Jackson through their company, Wild West Designs. Specializing in custom lighting and antler chandeliers, Wild West Designs creates pieces for both corporate and residential installations. A free-flowing antler canopy with filtered lighting installed in a Santa Fe restaurant was featured in Architectural Digest. Wild West Designs carries custom furniture by Green Gables made of turn-of-the-century aged barn wood, and is able to ship internationally.

DWELLING

For over 35 years, Ballou Dawg American Furnishings has offered one-of-a-kind furniture made by New Mexico craftsman and owner Ray Renfroe. Signature pieces are handmade from wormy maple, a naturally-distressed wood with a beautiful grain.
