NORTHBROOKS SECONDARY SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2022 Staying Strong Staying True Staying Free
Orange, the colour of the rising dawn, never fails to remind the young and old alike, that every new day is a gift. Like the rising dawn, the plane in orange reminds Brooksians that each new day promises new beginnings. As you turn the pages of this yearbook to reflect on our collective Brooksian journey in 2022, let us also find hope nestled in its memories. It is with this hope that we move forward and build a brighter new day together.
With quick-thinking action, improvisation and innovation, our school stayed strong together through facing trials as one united body. In spite of the challenges, our school stayed true to our mission of empowering Brooksians through our programmes, to become passionate learners who are grounded in sound values and have a heart for others. We also celebrated together as a school, for it is in those moments of joy and gratitude that our school stayed free and aspired to soar to greater heights, as One Northbrooks, One Family

One Northbrooks
Northbrooks’ Story
The Beginning
Northbrooks Secondary School started at the dawn of a new millennium on 2 January 2000 with eight Secondary 1 classes. Built at a cost of over $23 million, the school is fully-equipped with IT facilities and is set amidst the beautiful natural surroundings of Yishun Park.
The school is united in its desire to do its very best for its students and to prepare them for the future knowledge-based workplace. Besides developing their capacity to learn, the school also focuses on building the character of its students and helping them to develop compassion for others.
The name Northbrooks is derived from the Yuan Dynasty proverb 饮水 思源. This is one of the core moral values inculcated in all Brooksians: to always remember their roots and to be grateful to their family, teachers, friends and country for the success they achieve in life.

The Brooksian Crest
Just as WATER
is the basis of life, the school will provide a nurturing and challenging environment to inspire all Brooksians to learn and grow.
Just as TREES
like Aspens and Giant Redwoods grow in groves supporting one another with their roots intertwined, people too are connected by a system of roots (our family and friends). When pounded by the storms of life, we need to hold one another up; like the Oak with their deep, penetrating roots, the School will build a strong foundation of moral values in all Brooksians so that they will have the moral courage to make the right choices in life; like the Oak spreading their branches to provide shelter and nesting place for birds, the school will provide opportunities for Brooksians to develop their talents and abilities to the fullest, so that they in turn can reach out to touch the lives of others.
GOLD Background
With a firm foundation in moral values to guide their thinking, Brooksians will have the confidence to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. They will be well- balanced individuals, anchored by strong roots and equipped with wings to soar to great heights to achieve their dreams with integrity; and they will become people with values, of value to their community and to the nation.

With Brooksian fervour Lift up our voices

Principal’s Message
Be Strong. Be True. Be Free. These words hail from a line in our school song and are sung by every Brooksian who enters our gates. It sets out an aspiration that we hope every Brooksian will work towards as they progress through and beyond their time in Northbrooks Secondary School. It is also a timely reminder of what we needed to focus on in the uncertain landscape of 2022, with COVID-19 still looming in the background and disrupting the norm for staff and students. I am proud to say that in responding to the challenges of 2022, our Brooksian family has really lived and epitomised this line in our school song by Staying Strong, Staying True and Staying Free.
Staying Strong
“Alonewecandosolittle,togetherwecandosomuch.” – Helen Keller
Together with our passionate team of vice-principals, educators, executive and administrative staff as well as our partners, we charted the course and steered Team Northbrooks through 2022. Our school remained strong as one Team, one Family. Though we may have faced unpredictable winds at times, we adjusted our sails, and stayed focused on our common goal and destination: to create a strong culture of care and growth for our Brooksians to thrive in.
Staying True
“like the Oak spreading their branches to provide shelter and nesting place for birds, the school will provide opportunitiesforBrooksianstodeveloptheirtalentsand abilities to the fullest, so that they in turn can reach out to touch the lives of others.” – Northbrooks Secondary School Crest
We kept true to our mission of nurturing Champion Brooksians by creating this strong culture of care and growth. Through 2022, we expanded and refined our approaches to Blended Learning (BL), Full SubjectBased Banding (FSBB), Student-Initiated Learning (SIL) and student-led time (Brooksian Time), to impact our students at a deeper level.
In the area of BL, our educators leveraged technology to enhance and enrich the learning experiences of Brooksians. Our Art teachers, for example, created a virtual walk-through Art Exhibition in Term One, to celebrate and recognise works of art by the talented artists in our midst (Page 24). Meanwhile, our EdTech Champions used Brooksian Time to teach their classmates ways to make good use of their iPads (Page 42) for learning.
A tweak we made to this year’s SIL programme was to allow students to journey together with classmates who share similar passions. The result: stronger connections forged through a common love for cooking, video-editing and even the Korean culture (Page 49)!
Our social fabric continued to be knitted more strongly together with the second year of FSBB implementation. Our Brooksians had greater opportunities to know and interact with peers across different streams, subjects, backgrounds, and interests.
Staying Free
“Remember to celebrate milestones as you prepare for the road ahead.” – Nelson Mandela
Despite the physical restrictions put in place at the start of the year, the adoption of technology allowed the school community to stay free in our celebrations of various milestones throughout the year. Our Brooksians were able to participate in a Chinese New Year Tiger Head-Making Competition (Page 60) and Speech Day celebrations via live webcasts (Pages 58-59). Then as the year unfolded, more face-to-face interactions were allowed, and we progressively enjoyed being together as a whole-school community again.
My deepest appreciation goes to our vice-principals, key personnel, teachers, and support staff for their commitment and their untiring efforts at making Northbrooks Secondary School a good school. My special thanks also go to members of our School Advisory Committee, Parents’ Support Group, Alumni, partners as well as our coaches and instructors for their unstinting support for our school.
Finally, dear Brooksians, even as things return to normalcy, it is my fervent hope that you continue to push forward with the mental strength and resilience, the staying true to passion, and the freedom to dream which has been forged deeply during the pandemic years.
Soaring Yet Rooted, Mr David Lau

Chairman’s Message
Television host Oprah Winfrey once said, “For every one of us that succeeds, it’s because there’s somebody there to show you the way out. The light doesn’t have to be in your family, for me it was teachers and school.”
The same can be said for the students at Northbrooks Secondary School who are blessed to have a dedicated team of school leaders and nurturing teachers to help them navigate through the academic year of 2022.
While 2022 started off with many safe management measures still in place, we are fortunate that many of these measures have been lifted as Singapore is now doing much better in our fight against Covid-19.
Responding to these changes and implementing decisions required a group of flexible yet steady administrators and educators. To this end, the Northbrooks family certainly did commendably well under the leadership of Principal David Lau, to ensure that the school stayed strong, true and free in 2022 and that every Brooksian had an enriching educational experience.
I am impressed by the level of care shown to every Brooksian to ensure he or she reaches his utmost potential. Underpinning this is a strong network of programmes to ensure that Brooksians are grounded in sound moral values to guide them in their lives and to reach out to others.
The SAC will continue to partner the school in staying strong, true and free. I would like to thank all SAC members for their time, effort and resources invested towards the school.
Last but not least, I congratulate the Northbrooks family for another successful year of empowering the lives of Brookians to become champions who will in turn impact the community.

Bus rides are anything but mundane as our Elective Art students from 3F reimagine bus rides into surrealistic scenes straight out of a science fiction movie. Joanne Hoo Sian En [top R and bottom L], Ang Kay Lin [bottom R] and Mirrah Nisrina Binte Hairul Nazri create surreal scenes inspired by local artist Yeo Tze Yang, while Ang Kay Lin’s artwork [bottom L] was inspired by Edvard Munch’s famous artwork “The Scream”.
We have spotted quite a number of students doing sketches and drawings, be it at the canteen or study areas, and we find it a pity that the artwork will just remain in these students’ sketchbooks or visual journals. Hence, we started this virtual exhibition, to recognise these students for their passion, effort and dedication to art.
