Northbrooks Yearbook 2021: #NBrSS Safer & Stronger

Page 1

A comic book never fails to attract the attention of both the young and old for its eye-catching stylised visuals that unfold engaging narratives. Adopting a comic design for Yearbook 2021 is intentional as it is bound to bring a smile to the faces of Brooksians and our valued partners when they turn its pages and appreciate the rich Brooksian experience despite another year of living with Covid-19. By being proactive, and reactionary when the need arose, our school kept the Brooksian community together and safe. In spite of the pandemic, our school grew stronger together and stronger through innovation in curriculum, events and co-curricular activities as blended learning flourished with the harnessing of technology for teaching and learning. This is Northbrooks! This is our story of facing and overcoming challenges and celebrating successes in a year of many uncertainties. Enjoy!

THE NORTHBROOKS’ STORY

Northbrooks Secondary School started at the dawn of a new millennium on 2 January 2000 with eight Secondary 1 classes. Built at a cost of over $23 million, the school is fully-equipped with IT facilities and is set amidst the beautiful natural surroundings of Yishun Park. The school is united in its desire to do its very best for its students and to prepare them for the future knowledge-based workplace. Besides developing their capacity to learn, the school also focuses on building the character of its students and helping them to develop compassion for others. The name Northbrooks is derived from the Yuan Dynasty proverb 饮水思源. This is one of the core moral values inculcated in all Brooksians: to always remember their roots and to be grateful to their family, teachers, friends and country for the success they achieve in life.

THE CREST

s a t s u J WATER Just as Trees

is the basis of life, the school will provide a nurturing and challenging environment to inspire all Brooksians to learn and grow.

like Aspens and Giant Redwoods grow in groves supporting one another with their roots intert wined, people too are connected by a system of roots (our family and friends). When pounded by the storms of life, we need to hold one another up; like the Oak with their deep, penetrating roots, the School will build a strong foundation of moral values in all Brooksians so that they will have the moral courage to make the right choices in life; like the Oak spreading their branches to provide shelter and nesting place for birds, the school will provide opportunities for Brooksians to develop their talents and abilities to the fullest, so that they in turn can reach out to touch the lives of others.

Gold nd u o r g k Bac

With a firm foundation in moral values to guide their thinking, Brooksians will have the confidence to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. They will be well- balanced individuals, anchored by strong roots and equipped with wings to soar to great heights to achieve their dreams with integrity; and they will become people with values, of value to their community and to the nation.

6

THE ANTHEM With Brooksian fervour Lift up our voices Each day a new beginning Let hearts be open With hopes arising Our promise don’t deny. We’re friends who offer compassion Whatever the circumstance With fortitude we will overcome Be strong, be true, be free! Reach for tomorrow Take hold our future Let’s build a brighter new day We’re soaring, yet rooted Take flight And see our hopes and dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Volatilis tamen radicalis O see our dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Making champions of us all!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Though it has been a challenging t wo years, our amazing community in Northbrooks has not only enabled us to keep going but also thrive in these unprecedented times. Our Brooksians, teaching and non-teaching staff, School Advisory Committee (SAC) and Patron, Alumni, Parent Support Group (PSG), community partners and overseas partners, all play an integral part in ensuring that our Northbrooks ecosystem is a vibrant one. The pandemic has also amplified our Culture of Care and Grow in our school. Despite some early challenges, our Brooksians have managed to adapt well to the various safe management measures and the constraints caused by them. In addition, I am elated to see our peer support and student leaders play their part in supporting one another and leading in various activities. We recognise that students will need to wander, meander - even if it means getting some knocks along the way – in order to develop their interests as well as intellectual and social skills. Therefore, we will continue to create the space for them to articulate, try new things, lead and be empowered so that they can become confident and responsible individuals and team players. This is most evident, especially in our ser vice learning projects and the plethora of student-initiated and teacher-facilitated school programmes and events. For example, our new initiative this year, Brooksian Time, has resonated well with our students. Held once a week in the morning, Brooksian Time empowers students in leading and carrying out class activities on their own. Brooksians work together with their classmates to run programmes that run the gamut, from Aerospace, Student Leadership, Language, Peer Support to Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). We will continue to encourage student voice, student agency and ownership in our Brooksians to stretch their potential and encourage their passions. Our staff have also taken the lead and adapted very well during this difficult time while we tried to cope with the various demands and workload brought about by this new normal. Our affiliated partners, SAC/ Patron, Alumni and PSG, have also proactively come for ward to support the school in various ways. Supported by our SAC/ Patron, we held our inaugural Patron Challenge Shield, Northbrooks Glow Up. This challenge saw many Brooksians submitting their ideas and solutions to transform the Brooksian experience. To glow up means to transform mentally, physically and emotionally for the better and that is what the challenge shield aims to do - to give the students the voice and agency to make a difference. Arguably, we need to have an eye on the challenges and stand ready for future environmental changes as well as shifts in the education landscape, so that we can prevail against the odds. With the uncertainty that Covid-19 brings, our teamwork and learning agility will bring us through these challenging times. In recent years, the Ministry of Education (MOE) introduced three major initiatives - Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB), National Digital Literacy Programme (NDLP) and Blending Learning (BL) – all of which Northbrooks has embarked on. We believe that by embarking on these initiatives in a timely manner, there will be better coherence and synergy we can reap and create positive impact for more batches of Brooksians. This will prepare our students to be future-ready, providing them with multiple pathways, encouraging social mixing and uplifting the students. Indeed, it is now a common sight to see our Secondary 1 to 3 students using iPads for their learning in class and even outside of class. They can now learn on the go at their own pace, be curious, and discover and explore new knowledge on their own or work collaboratively. The power of technology has also been employed to support our educators in designing meaningful learning activities and experiences for our Brooksians to discover the joy in learning. They can now begin to imagine new possibilities, innovate new pedagogies and transform learning in a meaningful way with technology. To promote greater social mixing, we have embraced FSBB and re-organised our class structure to the current Secondary 1 Home Group and Learning Group concept. Such a concept has already promoted greater social compact in other pilot schools. With this FSBB effort, learning can be customised to develop each child to their fullest potential and mitigate the inadvertent labelling and stigmatisation due to streaming. To pace Brooksians’ learning across the four years, there will be more porosity in the 4-year secondary education to cater to students with different strengths and learning pace, while ensuring they can cope with the rigour of the curriculum. 8

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our structured fortnightly home-based learning helps to enhance the schooling experience and further develop our Brooksians into self-directed learners who integrate offline and online learning together seamlessly and have opportunities for studentinitiated learning. Underscoring these new education initiatives is CCE, with its key focuses - National Education, Cyber Wellness, Sexuality Education, Education Career Guidance, Family Education and Mental Health – remaining vital for student development. The MOE refreshed the CCE experience this year with CCE 2021, to help students navigate the complexities of today’s fast-changing social paradigm. In particular, mental health education has been strengthened to enable students to be better equipped to ensure their well-being, understand mental health problems and know when to seek support. Here at Northbrooks, we have also progressively integrated Positive Education (PosEd) concepts into our student development experiences over the last four years, focusing on well-being, self-care and caring for one another. Once again, this demonstrates our commitment to foster a strong Culture of Care and Grow in the many things we do. PosEd includes showing gratitude or appreciation, making time to listen or to lend a helping hand to someone, or practising mindfulness and other PosEd practices to clear the mind or to energise oneself. One other aspect of PosEd relates to Meaning and Purpose, and getting our students to set larger goals, even beyond themselves. This also includes environmental sustainability, which is an area that we have been focusing on through our Environmental Education programme since 2018. The theme for our 2021 Yearbook is #northbrooksstrongerandsafer as it illustrates how we have emerged stronger from this crisis and built a safer environment for our Brooksians to flourish in. This yearbook is testament to our determination and commitment to do well and thrive together. I have seen many positive instances of us stepping up and caring for issues or someone within the Northbrooks community. This caring and enabling culture will certainly ser ve to build our Northbrooks identity as we emerge stronger from this Covid-19 situation.

Mr Adam Ahmad vice-Prin cipal

Mdm Poh Shi Hui v ic e - P r in c ip a l

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners-in-education, our local community and overseas partners for believing in us and working closely with us to deliver meaningful experiences for our Northbrooks community. Lastly, I would like to show my deepest appreciation to our dedicated publication team for working tirelessly on yet another distinctive and memorable Yearbook. Finally, due to the rotational posting of principals, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure from the Northbrooks family after 5 fulfilling years. I would like to thank the entire Northbrooks community for your support over the years and I wish the school all the very best for the future ahead under the leadership of Mr David Lau. Let’s warmly welcome him into our Brooksian family. Soaring Yet Rooted, Nick Chan Principal

IC T @ NORTHBROOKS 1D students smile in excitement as [L-R] Vice-Principal Mdm Poh Shi Hui and their form teacher Ms Joanna Ho present an iPad to their class representative Audri Quraisha Bte Muhammad Firoz. The handingover ceremony made the occasion more meaningful and memorable for the students and the school.

2T1 students pose proudly with their brand new iPads as they get ready to unbox their learning devices for the first time. All Secondary 1 to 3 Brooksians received their very own iPads in Semester 1, as part of the National Digital Literacy Programme. Many students shared that they did not think they would have the chance to own an iPad of their own.

2F students demonstrate self-directed and collaborative learning using their iPads during a lesson. Over the course of the year, teachers found that the iPad greatly enhanced their students’ ability to learn at a suitable pace. Teachers were also able to customise their lessons to suit the needs of individual learners, allowing for personalised learning to take place.

Cranston Poh Yi Jun (1T2) and his classmates enjoy an interactive game of Active Arcade on their iPads during a Physical Education lesson conducted by Mdm Au Lai Fei. Active Arcade is an app that offers a variety of engaging motion-based games to get students moving.

Students explore features on their iPads as part of a training session conducted by Apple Singapore. Training sessions were conducted to ensure that students are equipped with basic competencies needed for them to maximise the potential of their iPads for learning.

“During the training session, I saw many students explore features on their iPads that were not taught by the instructor. This highlights the potential of a learning device in enhancing students’ competencies in self-directed learning.” - Mr William Chan Ying Chung (HOD / ICT)
