Empowered by the guidance and care provided by the school, they stand ready to confront the challenges of the future. Rooted in strong values, our Brooksians are prepared to soar, fulfilling their fullest potentials and achieving their own definitions of success. To enrich the lives of our Brooksians, we collaborate as ‘One Team,’ comprising passionate school leaders, educators, and a broader network of partners, including parents, the SAC, and alumni. The school adopts ‘One Language’ as Brooksians dedicate themselves to learning, while the rest of the school community remains committed to putting Brooksians’ needs first, nurturing and developing them to the fullest. Lastly, we move forward as ‘One Family,’ sharing in the joys of celebrating and honouring the achievements of our Brooksians.

This publication would not have been possible without the hard work and creative collaboration of many. We sincerely thank all partners, students and staff who have contributed in one way or another. We are especially grateful to our school leaders, Mr David Lau, Ms Goh Peishi, Mr Daniel Yip and Mr Sahril Bin Yahya for their advice and support.

THE BROOKSIAN STORY

NORTHBROOKS’ STORY

THE BEGINNING Northbrooks Secondary School was founded on 2 January 2000 with eight Secondary One classes.

思源

The Chinese name of Northbrooks Secondary School is derived from the Yuan Dynasty proverb . The name reminds all Brooksians to always remember their roots and be grateful to their families, teachers, friends and countries for the successes they achieve.

饮⽔思源

The school is united in doing its best to prepare Brooksians for the future knowledge-based workplace. Besides honing their capacity to learn, the school also focuses on building the character of Brooksians, including being compassionate to others.

THE BROOKSIAN CREST

WATER

Just as water Is the basis of life, the school both nurtures and challenges Brooksians to learn and grow into Champions, impacting the community.

TREES Just like trees such as Aspens and Giant Redwoods that support one another with their strong roots intertwined, Brooksians are firmly connected with one another and their loved ones. Just as Oaks hold one another up with their deep roots during strong winds and violent storms, we seek to do the same by building strong foundation of moral values in our students so that they have the moral courage to make the right choices in life when they are pounded by the storms of life. The wide branches of the Oaks are good nesting places that provide shelter for birds. Likewise, Northbrooks provides a safe and nurturing environment for students to develop their talent and maximise their potential.

GOLD BACKGROUND Like gold, strong moral values provide Brooksians a solid foundation to stand firm against the challenges of a rapidly changing world. With good values, Brooksians become valuable individuals who impact the community and the nation positively

6

THE BROOKSIAN ANTHEM With Brooksian fervour Lift up our voices Each day a new beginning Let hearts be open With hopes arising Our promise don’t deny. We’re friends who offer compassion Whatever the circumstance With fortitude we will overcome Be strong, be true, be free! Reach for tomorrow Take hold our future Let’s build a brighter new day We’re soaring, yet rooted Take flight And see hopes and dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Volatilis tamen radicalis O see our dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Making champions of us all!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As we bid farewell to 2023, I am delighted to reflect on the incredible journey we have embarked upon together. This year has graced us with abundant blessings, and it fills me with immense pride and satisfaction to witness the remarkable progress we’ve made as a close-knit educational family, nurturing and enriching the lives entrusted to our care.

[L-R] Mr Daniel Yip Kok Hoong (Vice-Principal), Mr David Lau Yau Boon (Principal), Ms Goh Peishi (Vice-Principal) and Mr Sahril Bin Yahya (VicePrincipal (Admin))

While our students continue to excel academically, we firmly believe that the essence of school life transcends mere grades. It is our sincere hope that every Brooksian cherishes our distinctive holistic approach to education – one meticulously tailored to cater to their comprehensive needs. This approach empowers them to challenge themselves, shape their aspirations, and evolve into exceptional individuals firmly rooted in our school’s GIFTED values: Graciousness, Integrity, Fortitude, Teamwork, Empathy, and Discipline.

I am heartened to observe that our dedicated Northbrooks staff not only serve our students’ needs but also tirelessly inspire and guide each student towards achieving their personal best. We are truly blessed to have such a committed team within our school. As we look ahead, we will delve deeper into the heart of our school vision – “Every Brooksian A Champion, Impacting the Community.” Our aim is to explore innovative avenues that empower Brooksians to cultivate a passion for learning, nurture strong moral values, and embrace their profound sense of responsibility towards their community. Congratulations to each and every member of our Northbrooks family for their outstanding contributions throughout 2023. It has undeniably been another year filled with blessings for Northbrooks. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our School Advisory Committee, Parent Support Group, Alumni, and not to forget our incredibly hardworking coaches and instructors, whose unwavering support continues to fortify Northbrooks Secondary School. “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” – Henry Ford With gratitude and optimism for the journey ahead, David Lau Principal 8

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE This year, Northbrooks Secondary School marks her 23rd year of establishment since the first intake of students on January 3, 2000. I recalled when I set foot for the first time into this heartland school in early 2017 as a School Advisory Committee (SAC) member, I felt the positive energy flowing through it. It came from each smile and greeting I received from both teachers and students. It was not the usual school that I had expected. This place is driven by passion and purpose which in turn laid the foundation for positive learning and growth. Academic pursuit and results are important but there is more at Northbrooks Secondary School. Fast forward to 2023 and the school has earned many outstanding achievements, be it in academic, co-curricular activities or lifelong learning. The passion and selfless dedication of the teachers and staff members, led by a highly competent principal, inspire students to soar to new heights. Student enrolment has improved, the number of classes has increased, numerous awards have been earned at the school, interschool and national levels, and more parents are choosing Northbrooks Secondary School as their school of choice. The SAC is a group of like-minded professionals coming from a cross-sectional mix of business leaders, grassroots leaders and alumni. The SAC provides a realistic perspective of the working world, and helps students to see the connections between the knowledge and skills they acquire in school with how they are applied in the world of work. We interact with the school leaders, share ideas, challenge conventions and contribute in deed and time with one core objective – to work with the school to bring out the best in Brooksians. In 2021, the SAC, with the support of the school, launched the Patron’s Challenge. It was the first of its kind in the school. We were honoured to have Patron Dr T Chandroo, prominent entrepreneur, community leader and philanthropist, as the judge for the challenge. The objective of the Patron’s Challenge is to develop students to apply what they have learnt in school creatively and be futureready. Held biennially, Patron’s Challenge 2023 was held in conjunction with the school’s Student-Initiated Learning (SIL) programme, nine finalist teams, comprising three teams per level (Secondary One to Three) competed to win the Patron’s Trophy and prizes. The students were judged based on four criteria - Growth Mindset (the ability of students to demonstrate the spirit of learning through being resilient and overcoming any challenges in the pursuit of their SIL), Teamwork (the ability of students to work effectively as a team), Confidence (the ability of students to present confidently) and Critical Thinking (the potential of their proposal to feed their learning forward). The objective was to add a new dimension to the school’s teaching and to develop students to be future-ready. With the successful completion of Patron’s Challenge 2023, it has been decided that this challenge will continue as an annual competition from 2024 onwards. The emphasis on developing students to be future-ready is paramount in an increasingly interconnected and uncertain world. Events happening in one part of the world may also affect us in Singapore. The Covid-19 pandemic is a good example and more events such as wars, climate change, cyber frauds, food and energy supply disruptions are happening. It is therefore important for Brooksians to think beyond what they learnt from their textbooks and in their classrooms, to stay relevant and resilient during changing times. They need to create greater value by contributing new knowledge to and making new connections with the borderless world. This is a new order and a new normal for schools and their students. As we welcome a new year, let us unite in our thoughts and aspirations for a more enriching learning journey in 2024 for Brooksians and for many more good years to come for Northbrooks Secondary School! Mr Lawrence Yip SAC Chairman
