Valerie Kravette is a lifelong artist whose journey weaves together theatre, performance, music, dance, writing and the visual arts. She has penned eight novels, earned recognition in fiction contests, and mesmerized audiences with her one-woman cabaret shows. A true creative explorer, she paints, joins jazz jams, and has danced in major burlesque festivals. Her philosophy is simple yet powerful—if she can do these things, so can you.

Kravette has professional training in NLP, hypnosis, SoulCollage, life coaching, and reiki. In 2015, she completed the Color of Woman training led by artist and activist Shiloh Sophia McCloud. She is an Animist Minister with the Web of Life Church in Tucson. As a SHIFT-IT visual coach, she is available both in Tucson and online, guiding others in unlocking their personal genius through transformational creativity.

“Lilith Eve” emerged from the Soul Fire teachings of the Color of Woman training, a profound practice blending painting with personal development through Intentional Creativity. While creating this piece, Kravette explored the idea that Lilith and Eve—traditionally presented as separate figures in the Garden of Eden—might actually represent different aspects of the same woman, embodying both dark and light.

Intentional Creativity work encourages embracing the sacred feminine, recognizing its presence and power in today’s world. “Lilith Eve” invites viewers to reflect on their own inner dualities and reclaim the divine feminine within.

The Women’s Wellness issue is here—one of my absolute favorites each year. I love celebrating what helps women feel healthy, happy and empowered. There’s something truly magical about shining a light on the sacred feminine and all the ways she expresses herself—through art, healing, movement, nourishment, creativity and courage.

Gracing our cover this month is the exquisite artwork of Valerie Kravette, titled Lilith Eve. This powerful piece invites us to reflect on our own inner dualities and reconnect with the divine feminine within. It’s a stunning reminder that we are made of both fire and softness—of shadows and shimmering light.

Speaking of art, I found Suzie Agrillo’s artist spotlight (page 16) featuring the work of Erinn Kennedy to be especially evocative. Her creative journey speaks to the transformative power of self-expression, and how honoring our inner world can ripple outward in the most inspiring ways.

The time has come for the divine feminine to take her rightful place in the world—bringing with her intuition, softness, strength, balance and bold truth. In this spirit, Deb Beroset’s uplifting article on page 10 reminds midlife women that we’re not in crisis—we’re in the midst of a creative awakening. If your heart is whispering (or shouting!) that you’re meant for something more, let this be your sign: it’s not too late. In fact, the best time to begin is right now.

For those navigating hormonal health, don’t miss our Therapy Spotlight on page 12 featuring Ron Zack of Innovative Wellness of Tucson. His integrative approach offers hope, healing and holistic support. And our Conscious Eating column on page 20 continues the conversation with nourishing insights that elevate the path to hormonal harmony.

One article I truly loved is Sylvia Boyd’s piece on page 14, which explores the sacred intelligence of a woman’s pelvis—our hearth, our root, our sacred center. After reading it, you may never look at your pelvis quite the same way again—in the best possible sense.

This issue is a celebration of our wholeness, our wellness, and our wisdom. There are many inspiring stories, thought-provoking briefs, and heart-centered community happenings in these pages—I can’t wait for you to experience it all.

Here’s to honoring your body and your brilliance, this month and every month!

Beyond Intuition: Dawn Rataczak on the Art of Channeling

In a world filled with noise, Dawn Rataczak offers a rare and sacred quiet—an open channel through which divine messages flow. With 16 years of experience as a professional channel and a lifetime of intuitive connection, Rataczak has become a trusted conduit for spiritual insight, healing and clarity.

So, what exactly is channeling? According to Rataczak, channeling is the process by which a person steps aside energetically to allow a spiritual being to come forward and communicate. “The spiritual being uses the channel’s physical body—most often the voice—to share messages and insights in response to a participant’s question,” she shares.

Some channels work with a single guide, while others, like Rataczak, connect with many. An intuitive since childhood, she works with several spiritual guides as well as the participant’s own spirit to bring through whatever is most needed in the moment. “Participants may wish to connect with a loved one who has passed or seek clarity and support with a current life situation,” explains Rataczak.

Through intuitive and sensory perception, the channel attunes to the energy of the person—whether in person or over the phone— and to the specific question or presence being called in. This creates a clear channel through which insight, guidance, and healing may flow.

“There are no tricks, and no illusions—just a pure, energetic alignment that allows Absolute Truth, Pure Light and Unconditional Love to be shared,” affirms Rataczak.

For group or private sessions and energy workshop information, call Dawn Rataczak at 520-425-7286 for more information.

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. John Keifer

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. John Keifer—beloved chiropractor, healer and spiritual mentor—who peacefully merged with the light in the early hours of March 30. Affectionately known as “Dr. K” by his many devoted patients, he practiced chiropractic medicine and applied kinesiology for over 46 years in Tucson, offering healing infused with deep intuition, humor and compassion.

Dr. K’s practice was unlike any other. Appointments often included not just treatments, but puns, stories and contagious laughter. He remembered the names and life journeys of his patients’ families, and they, in turn, followed the lives of his own children. He held a rare blend of medical skill and heart-centered presence and was cherished as both doctor and friend by the Tucson community.

Longtime assistant Tracy Dunbar remembers her first interview with Dr. K on the porch of his “clinic on the hill”—a meeting that quickly evolved into a conversation about natural medicine, spirituality and even UFOs. She writes, “He became one of my most trusted teachers, a father figure, and my best friend. Working with Dr. K meant being part of a comedic and healing adventure filled with puns, jump scares and profound life lessons.”

Another longtime assistant, Christina Micek, recalls Dr. K’s spiritual devotion. He practiced qigong, Transcendental Meditation, and was a dedicated student of A Course in Miracles and non-dual teachings. “He taught me about true forgiveness and awareness,” she says. “He helped me experience peace in a way that changed how I see myself and the world.”

Dr. K’s legacy continues through his son, Justin Keifer, a local energy healer who worked alongside him at the Family Wellness Center. “My father helped me find my path and guided me to use my intuition to help others heal,” says Justin, who will now carry the torch, keeping the Keifer Wellness Center open and evolving.

A Celebration of Life for Dr. Keifer will be held soon. His laughter, wisdom and radiant spirit will be deeply missed—but the love he shared will continue to ripple through the community he so dearly served.

Location: 1001 N. Swan Rd., Tucson. For information about the clinic, call 520-577-1717 or visit KeiferWellnessCenter.com.

Spring Clean Your Liver

As the days get longer and the air fills with the scent of blooming flowers, many of us feel the urge to clean out closets, open the windows, and refresh our space. But spring cleaning doesn’t have to stop at your front door. Just like your home, your body benefits from a seasonal reset— especially your liver.

The liver is your body’s builtin detoxifier. Every day, it filters your blood, processes hormones, breaks down toxins, and supports your metabolism. It’s the ultimate multitasker, and yet it’s often overlooked until something goes wrong.

What’s more concerning is that liver issues are on the rise—even in people who don’t drink alcohol. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the most common liver condition in the United States, affecting nearly 1 in 3 adults. Even more shocking, it’s estimated that 1 in 10 children now have signs of fatty liver—largely driven by processed foods, sugary beverages, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Most people with early NAFLD don’t even know they have it. Symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, stubborn weight gain, or hormonal imbalance can all be early signals that the liver needs

support. Upper right quadrant pain or the sensation of fullness can be later signs. Often fatty liver is found on an ultrasound as an incidental finding. Normal liver enzymes do not exclude you from liver disease. Although the liver plays a vital role in health, it is often overlooked in the treatment of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is considered the season of the liver—a time of renewal, growth and upward movement. It’s the perfect time to support this vital organ and give your body the tools it needs to clear out the internal clutter that’s built up over the winter months.

Supporting your liver doesn’t mean doing harsh cleanses or restrictive diets. It starts with nourishing your body with liverloving foods—think leafy greens, beets, lemon water, cruciferous vegetables, and herbal teas like dandelion and milk thistle. Adequate fiber, hydration and movement all help the liver do its job more efficiently.

Just as we feel lighter and clearer after organizing our homes, many people report clearer skin, better digestion, more stable moods, and renewed energy after a focused liver reset. Hormones begin to rebalance. Sleep improves. The body lets go of what it’s been holding onto.

If you’ve been feeling sluggish, inflamed or out of sync with your body, consider making this season one of true renewal—from the inside out. Give yourself the spring cleaning your body has been craving.

Dr. DeeAnn Saber and Dr. Emily Takeuchi Miller are naturopathic doctors with TransFormational Medicine located at 2028 E. Prince Rd. in Tucson. They offer a doctor-guided, 3-month Metabolic Reset Program designed to support the liver, heal the gut, and rebalance hormones in a gentle and personalized way. For more information, call 520-2091755 or visit TFMND.co. See ad, page 11.

You’re Not Lost, You’re Just Growing Wild

Why midlife isn’t a crisis—it’s a creative awakening

Are you giving your time and energy to what truly lights you up?

Are your days aligned with your values, not just your obligations?

Are you creatively nourished, emotionally supported, spiritually awake?

In this chapter of life, wellness looks less like striving and more like remembering. Less like proving, and more like expressing. It’s about reclaiming your own rhythm, your own voice, your own way of being in the world.

The Power of Letting Go

Part of what makes this season powerful is that we’re invited to release what no longer serves. Roles we’ve outgrown. Expectations we never signed up for. Even outdated dreams we’ve outlived.

By

At some point, many women in midlife find themselves pausing mid-sentence, mid-job, mid-life and thinking: Wait…is this it?

It’s not that anything’s terribly wrong. But something feels off—like a flicker has gone out. The old rhythms don’t fit. The spark is harder to access. There’s a sense of quiet restlessness, of wanting more…without always knowing what more is.

In our culture, we’re taught to fear that moment. It’s labeled a “midlife crisis,” as if this stirring is something to be avoided, denied or medicated away. But what if it’s not a problem at all? What if it’s actually a threshold?

As the founder of Moxie, a reinvention community for women 45 and up, I’ve

worked with hundreds of women navigating this exact territory. And I can tell you this: That moment when you start to feel uncertain, uninspired or slightly out of step with your own life? That’s not a breakdown. That’s a breakthrough trying to happen.

It’s not a sign you’re lost. It’s a sign you’re about to grow wild.

The Myth of “Wellness”

We’re told that “wellness” is about discipline—what we eat, how we move, which supplements we take. And yes, our bodies matter. But at midlife and beyond, wellness starts to mean something deeper. Something wilder. Something much more personal.

Wellness is not just physical—it’s energetic.

I’ve seen it again and again: when a woman lets go of what’s no longer true, she creates space for something new to emerge. Sometimes it’s a creative project that’s been quietly calling her name for years. Sometimes it’s a new relationship—with herself, her body, or the sacred in the everyday. Sometimes it’s simply the courage to be still for a while and listen for what’s next.

That space—that fertile, uncertain, shimmering space—is where transformation lives.

Creativity as Medicine

You don’t have to be an artist to live a creative life. Creativity is simply how you access your aliveness. It might look like painting, sure—but it also might look like rearranging your living room so it actually feels like you. Taking long walks without a destination. Making a collage that captures how you want your days to feel. Wearing something that makes your spirit say hell yes.

At midlife, we don’t need more performance metrics. We need more play. More meaning. More beauty. More soul.

You’re Not Too Late

One of the most common things I hear is, “Isn’t it too late?”

Too late to start something new.

Too late to change directions.

Too late to be seen, heard and celebrated.

To that, I say: Nope. Not even close.

If anything, this is your prime. You’ve got wisdom, discernment, depth—and now you get to decide what to do with it. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to say yes to what’s next. Yes to beauty. Yes to boldness. Yes to your own becoming.

Want a Place to Begin?

If this resonates—if your soul is whispering yes—you’re not alone.

Club Moxie is a creative, soulful membership community designed for women 45 and up who are ready to step into their next chapter with intention, artistry and unapologetic joy. With monthly events, meditative collage parties, deep conversations, and a growth-friendly sisterhood, it’s where reinvention stops being a solo act and starts becoming a shared adventure.

This isn’t self-help. It’s self-remembrance.

You’re not too late. You’re right on time.

Let’s grow wild.

Deb Beroset is a midlife reinvention expert, creative catalyst, and founder of It’s Time For Moxie, an immersive ecosystem of programs, retreats and community for women 45 and up who are ready to live boldly and beautifully. Balancing Hormones, Restoring Vitality

The Power of Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

libido,” he says. “Conventional treatments often rely on pharmaceuticals, such as antidepressants, and synthetic hormones, which may not perfectly mimic the body’s natural substances.” Zack’s approach at Innovative Wellness emphasizes the use of bioidentical hormones, which are chemically identical to those naturally produced by the human body, providing a tailored solution that aligns more closely with the body’s own needs.

Innovative Wellness of Tucson is reshaping the way women approach hormonal health, offering a promising alternative to traditional treatments through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Led by Ron Zack, a board-certified family nurse practitioner with additional certification in BHRT, this pioneering practice is dedicated to helping women reclaim their vitality, balance and well-being by addressing hormonal imbalances with precision and care.

Zack explains that hormones play a critical role in regulating various bodily functions— from metabolism and energy levels to mood and reproductive health. “For many women, particularly as they approach midlife and beyond, natural fluctuations in hormones can result in challenging symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, mood swings and diminished

“At Innovative Wellness of Tucson, your symptoms will be taken seriously and will not be attributed to ‘getting older.’ Although age has a role, many environmental factors contribute to diminished hormones and treatment is available,” says Zack, who shares that patients undergo comprehensive evaluations, including detailed blood work and symptom assessments, ensuring that therapy is precisely aligned with their specific hormonal requirements. This personalized approach can make a significant difference in alleviating symptoms that have long disrupted the lives of many women. “It’s not just about replacing hormones—it’s about restoring balance and optimizing health,” assures Zack, whose philosophy reflects a commitment to empowering women through science-backed, natural treatments that promote overall wellness.

For women who have experienced the pitfalls of traditional hormone therapy—where one-size-fitsall treatments sometimes lead to substandard care or unintended side effects— bioidentical hormone replacement offers a refreshing alternative. “The body’s compatibility with these natural compounds often means fewer adverse reactions and a more harmonious balance. By fine-tuning hormone levels, patients not only experience relief from symptoms but also see improvements in energy levels, mental clarity and overall quality of life,” says Zack. “Moreover, this approach can support long-term health by potentially reducing the risks associated with chronic conditions that often accompany hormonal imbalances.”

In the dynamic field of women’s health, the work being done by Zack is both innovative and timely. With a strong foundation in research and clinical experience, he is dedicated to educating women about the benefits of BHRT. This empowerment through knowledge encourages women to take an active role in their health, making informed decisions that are aligned with their personal wellness goals.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy represents a paradigm shift—a move away from the generalized, often heavy-handed approaches of the past toward a more refined and patient-centric method. As more women seek natural alternatives to manage symptoms associated with aging and hormonal fluctuations, BHRT stands out as a beacon of hope. Zack’s leadership in this field has not only contributed to the advancement of women’s healthcare in Tucson but has also set a new standard for how hormone imbalances can be effectively managed.

Ultimately, BHRT’s promise lies in its ability to address the root causes of hormonal disturbances, providing lasting relief and a renewed sense of well-being. For any woman seeking a natural, customized approach to hormone health, Innovative Wellness of Tucson offers a path forward—a journey back to balance, vitality and a life lived to its fullest potential.

The Pelvis, the Emotional Center for Women

For women, the pelvis is more than just a physical structure—it is the hearth of their being, a sacred center that holds both strength and sensitivity. This core can easily become misaligned or imbalanced due to emotional or physical trauma. Anatomically, the pelvis is a complex region for both women and men, made up of an intricate network of muscles, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, and vital organs. It supports the spine and anchors the body to

the legs. While there are distinct structural differences between male and female pelvises—designed to accommodate unique anatomical functions—both men and women can face similar challenges when this foundational center is out of balance.

Falling on the tailbone (coccyx) or injuring it can throw off the alignment of the hips, creating imbalance and a lack of stability in both the hips and legs. The coccyx may be a small bone, but it’s mighty. If it becomes misaligned or adhered by scar tissue, it can compromise the lumbar and sacral regions of the spine, affecting not only the lower back and pelvis but also the viscera in the front (anterior) of the body.

Abdominal and pelvic surgeries—including pregnancy and childbirth—often generate significant scar tissue in the pelvic floor, which is a bowl-like diaphragmatic structure, as well as in the anterior body. This front-facing region can become overly dense due to excess tissue growth, while the back body, particularly the lumbar-sacral area, often tightens and stiffens in response.

This internal imbalance can displace primary organs. For example, the uterus may

tilt backward toward the spine (retroversion) or too far forward (anteversion). Male reproductive organs can also be affected by the overdevelopment of soft tissue, leading to pain and restriction due to internal adhesions.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can also present as bladder urgency or incontinence (slow or no flow). These soft tissue conditions— including certain stomach issues—often respond well to therapies like visceral manipulation and craniosacral techniques.

In cases of scoliosis, the body tends to favor one side, which compresses the spine more on that side. This uneven pressure often leads to discomfort in the corresponding side of the pelvis. Some individuals may also develop small, painful nodules in the perineum—the narrow region between the anus and genitals. These nodules are often embedded deep within the tissue and can’t be easily treated with topical methods. This area, especially in women, can be particularly vulnerable to irritation and chronic discomfort.

Thanks to the unique responsiveness of pelvic soft tissue—including the perineum and visceral organs—therapies tailored to these regions can be profoundly effective. They not only offer physical relief but also emotional healing.

Sylvia Boyed has been in practice as a visceral and craniosacral structural therapist for 20 years. Her office is located at Light Touch Healing Studio, 6979 E. Broadway Blvd., Ste. 109 in Tucson. To connect call 520-370-3689. See ad, page 18.

An Invitation From Mother Earth

Connections between women and the Earth’s natural rhythms ran deep in ancient civilizations and spiritual traditions worldwide. Women held important roles in agriculture, cultivating the soil and grinding grain. From the village herbalist that brewed roots for ailing townspeople to the Victorian ladies that used floriography (the language of flowers) to convey unspoken sentiments, women’s intimate connection with nature spans millennia. These cultural threads continue to influence our folklore and fairy tales, as well as our reverence for Mother Nature.

When environmental activist Julia “Butterfly” Hill climbed an ancient redwood tree in 1997 to protest the clear-cutting of oldgrowth forests, she had no intention of living in the forest canopy for two years. This harrowing act of activism not only forged a life-altering relationship with the elements and her inner wilderness, but also inspired a global mission to encourage others to care for the planet in small ways.

The rest of us don’t have to live in a tree to contribute to the environment, but we can begin by repairing our estrangement from Mother Earth. Despite efforts to live sustainably, that innate, energetic umbilical cord connecting us to the natural world has been severed for too many of us. We go days and weeks without sunlight on our skin or sand between our toes. Spending time outdoors has become a forgotten necessity, and we are paying the price for this alienation between Gaia and our physical bodies.

Taking time to walk the dog, plant a patio flower garden, play on the swings with the grandkids or enjoy a morning coffee on the deck are all simple ways to tap into Mother Nature’s restorative benefits. Planning a camping trip, attending a plant identification workshop or taking lunch breaks outside can have profound effects on our neurotransmitters, hormonal rhythms and morale. Reestablishing this connection enables us to remember our ancient roots, which, in turn, nourishes a brighter tomorrow.

A graduate of the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon, she drew early inspiration from the French Impressionists Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne, as well as the English painters Ben and Winifred Nicholson of St. Ives. Their bold shapes and combinations of landscape and intimate still life arrangements are visible in her joyful desertinspired paintings.

Kennedy works in her studio at the Steinfeld Warehouse Gallery and Studios in Downtown Tucson’s historic Warehouse Arts District. When not in her studio, Kennedy spends her time creating hand-made mosaic tiles for Tucson’s Santa Theresa Tileworks, sketching outdoors in her Dunbar Spring Neighborhood, and playing the button accordion and concertina in local Irish music sessions with her band, The Shanties. Keep reading for a look into her life, her creative spirit, and how her artistic talent contributes to our local community.

Q&A with Artist Erinn Kennedy

Where did you grow up? When did you move to Tucson?

Highland Park, Illinois. I moved to Tucson in 2010.

Have you always been artistic?

Yes, I remember making my first drawing at age three and thinking, “This is really fun.” I loved drawing as a child.

How did you get started as a professional artist?

A gallery owner saw my work in the thesis exhibition of my graduating class at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. He asked if he could represent me and show my work in his gallery in Portland. I started showing regularly with him right after I graduated from college in the summer of 1991, and have exhibited my work in galleries and other venues ever since.

Where else have you exhibited your art?

The Tohono Chul Galleries, The Steinfeld Warehouse Gallery and Studios, Raices Taller, The Drawing Studio and Bentley Gallery. I’ve also been featured in art exhibits in Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. Additionally, my work is in the permanent collection of the Portland Art Museum, the Microsoft Corporate Collection and numerous private collections.

How does Arizona inspire you?

Arizona inspires me with its vast landscape and its skies with their changing colors at different times of the day. I love the historic structures in and around Tucson, and the stories about them. I also love the unique and beautiful plant life here.

What medium(s) do you use for your work?

I use acrylic paint and pencil on birch wood panel.

How do people find you and your art?

They can find my work at ErinnKennedy.com and on Instagram at @erinnkennedy. I show periodically at the Tohono Chul Galleries. I also have an art studio at the Steinfeld Warehouse Gallery and Studios, which is a vibrant space with several talented working artists. It houses an exhibition space and holds performances.

I participate in the First Saturday Art Walks from 4 to 8 p.m. and subsequent Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. I also take part in art exhibitions and Open Studio Tours there along with other artists. These public events are really fun, and a great way for people to get out and see the variety of artists’ work that Tucson has to offer. Appointments can be scheduled to visit me there. You can learn more about the Steinfeld Warehouse Gallery and Studios at SteinfeldWarehouse.org.

What do you feel when you create?

When I create my art, I feel engaged, calm, peaceful, thoughtful and playful. I also have a sense of finding the inherent beauty of my subject.

When you create art, do you have a hope for how it impacts people?

I hope people can sense the beauty and happiness I find in my subjects.

What music do you listen to while you are painting?

Traditional Irish music, and folk music from all over the world. I also love jazz, especially Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan and just about anything from the Blue Note Label.

How would you describe yourself in ten words or less?

Curious, thoughtful, observant, engaged, grateful.

What does “purpose” mean to you?

Having a sense of your path in general. Having a sense of what you want to do and why it’s important for you and your community, and how to trust and respect that sense of direction.

What book are you currently reading?

Dust Tracks on a Road, an autobiography by Zora Neale Hurston.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Some of the best advice came to me recently. I also play music, and after performing in front of an audience, I felt I had played pretty

poorly that night—I thought about every mistake I made, every missed note and every fumble. Feeling disappointed in my performance, I turned to one of my bandmates and told him how I felt. He said this: “That always happens. You have to look at the big picture. Is the audience happy? Are you happy? If yes, then it went well.” He was right. The audience was happy, and I had a great time playing. So, remember to look at the big picture when you start to question yourself or feel discouraged.

What is your dream vacation?

To go to Nice, France, and see the views and scenes that Matisse so beautifully painted.

What are some of your favorite things to do/restaurants to eat at in Tucson?

The Cup Café at the Hotel Congress. Jojo’s lovely courtyard dining and Café a la C’art, both in the historic Presidio. Tohono Chul Park and the art galleries of Tohono Chul. The Tucson Botanical Gardens, walking through and sketching the buildings of Barrio Historico and Presidio Neighborhoods. The Steinfeld Galleries and Santa Theresa Tileworks.

Please tell us about your accordion and your Irish music concerts. I took piano lessons when I was young and come from a musical family. I first heard artist Caitlin Nic Gabahnn playing traditional Irish music on a concertina accordion and fell in love with the sound of the instrument and the music. I acquired a concertina and have been playing it just about every day for nine years. I started playing the button accordion about three years ago. The concertina is bright and high pitched, and the button accordion is lower pitched and richer, plus it has bass note chords for accompaniment. I enjoy playing both instruments for their range and sounds.

I play with a local Tucson Irish Session that meets informally every Tuesday at the Hotel McCoy from 6 to 8 p.m. There is also session at the Monterey Court every second and last Sunday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tucson has a great, welcoming and rich community of musicians who play Irish

music, and it’s very fun to play with and meet other musicians and to learn new tunes. There are so many tunes!

What is your role in making mosaic tiles at Santa Theresa tile works? Do you teach any classes/ workshops there?

I am employed at Santa Theresa Tileworks, which is a Tucson gem! It is a ceramic studio where I work with three other artists and make original mosaic tiles by hand that are sold through the showroom, where people can create beautiful, framed pieces with them that they can take home.

We also make a lot of public art and custom pieces for local businesses and nonprofits. We have benches in the Tucson

Botanical Garden and mosaics in Catalina State Park, The Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, Youth on Their Own, and the Women’s Plaza of Honor at the University of Arizona, to name a few. I design and work on awards and commemorative pieces for many Tucson businesses.

I’m currently working on a large custom donor recognition piece for Casa de Los Ninos which will be installed in the lobby of their new building. We also have workshops and teach classes on how to make hand cut mosaic tiles and how to assemble them to create a finished mosaic. Santa Theresa is unique because it is a nonprofit which is owned by Imago Dei Middle School, and the proceeds go to support their programming, so it’s a fun way for individuals to empower youth in our community.

I’ve worked at Santa Theresa for 12 years, and I’ve learned a lot about ceramics. I’m grateful to work with such a talented team. You can learn more by visiting SantaTheresaTileworks.com

How would you describe the essence of Tucson?

Tucson is a special city, and the Sonoran Desert is a unique and beautiful place. It’s endlessly inspiring and the community is welcoming. It has such a rich history. I find inspiration in and around this exceptional place and look forward to future discoveries within this region, and to share my inspired impressions of it.

Do you have a favorite quote or mantra on creativity?

Stay curious and open. Find beauty in things, large and small.

Healthy Cravings

Snacking for Hormonal Harmony

We have all experienced that irresistible craving for a crunchy, salty or sweet snack, propelling us to grab a bag of chips or dip into the cookie jar. While these treats might temporarily lift our mood and energy, they can wreak havoc on our hormones. Ultraprocessed food (UPF) has gained significant attention for hormonal disruptions, especially in women. A study published last year in Frontiers in Nutrition noted that adolescent girls were also particularly susceptible to hormonal imbalances when their diet was high in UPF.

Snack favorites such as potato chips or cupcakes are not the only culprits. A 2021 French study published in the Journal of Nutrition reported that UPF accounted for 37 percent or more of the energy intake for vegetarians and vegans, mainly due to meat and dairy substitutes. Individuals transitioning to a non-meat diet tended to consume more

ultra-processed meat substitutes and packaged foods compared to those that had long been vegetarian or vegan. Interestingly, the study also determined that non-meat eaters tended to consume more unprocessed foods and fewer fatty and sweet foods.

It is never too early or too late to make small, daily changes that can positively impact our well-being. “The real magic happens when we choose nourishment over numbness, when we eat in a way that sustains us, not just in the moment, but in the long run,” says Laura Peischl, a menopause health coach and hormone specialist with certifications in functional medicine and integrative nutrition.

Decoding Cravings

Understanding the reasons behind our cravings can empower us to make healthier choices for our bodies. “Cravings for salty foods can signal cortisol imbalances, adrenal fatigue or mineral deficiencies,” explains

Holly DeLong, a registered dietitian nutritionist specializing in functional medicine and founder of Food & Mood. “Cravings for sweets can stem from blood sugar imbalances, high cortisol levels and even low serotonin, our feel-good neurotransmitter. Cravings for crunchy foods can be associated with repressed anger, iron deficiency or insufficient fiber in the diet.”

Hormonal imbalances can have far-reaching effects beyond estrogen and progesterone. Mindy Pelz, a women’s health specialist and the author of Eat Like a Girl, sheds light on the bigger picture. “If your adrenals become burned out from constantly making cortisol, your body will also have trouble regulating estrogen and progesterone. That affects your sleep cycle and messes with melatonin, which changes your hunger levels through ghrelin and leptin. Basically, a single hormone imbalance can start a chain reaction that ends up sabotaging your overall well-being.”

Peischl, the author of Feel Good Menopause: The Essential Guide to Nutrition and Wellness, as well as the facilitator of a menopause support group on Facebook, reminds us that eating carb-heavy snacks without protein or fat can cause blood sugar spikes leading to a surge in insulin and cortisol, followed by a crash that leaves us feeling tired, irritable and craving more sugar. In times of stress, the synergy of protein, fiber and healthy fat is important for maintaining systemic balance. Opt for an unsweetened yogurt parfait topped with cacao nibs and berries, or an easy-to-make almond butter energy ball as mindful and delicious choices.

For women challenged by infertility, irregular periods, premenstrual syndrome and post birth control syndrome, seed cycling is a growing trend that involves consuming flax and pumpkin seeds during the first half of the menstrual cycle and sunflower and sesame seeds during the second half to promote a healthy balance of estrogen and progesterone levels. These seeds are rich in essential fatty acids and dietary zinc. Additional research is needed to substantiate the efficacy of this practice.

Picking Proteins, Ditching Sugar

Healthy proteins found in lean meats, organic soy, whey, unsalted nuts, nut butters, quinoa and nutritional yeast support a healthy gut microbiome, which plays a vital role in balanced hormones, insulin regulation and satiety. “Having protein alongside carbs also slows your absorption of carbohydrates, preventing craving-inducing blood sugar spikes,” explains Pelz. She also notes that protein contains the raw materials to build essential hormones, including tryptophan and tyrosine, the latter being a direct precursor to thyroid hormones. Pelz recommends grass-fed beef, wild salmon, tofu and quinoa as her preferred protein sources.

The sugar habit can incite higher insulin levels, causing insulin resistance, which increases the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome, Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. To overcome a sweet tooth, Pelz suggests taking a two-week sugar sabbatical (including maple syrup and honey) and replacing it with monk fruit, stevia or erythritol. For sweet treats, she prefers fiber-rich apples, kiwis and oranges.

According to Peischl, nuts, seeds, Greek yogurt and avocados can stabilize blood sugar and support neurotransmitter production. Sweet potatoes and lentils offer high-quality, complex carbohydrates and fiber. Noting that the liver plays a crucial role in processing and detoxifying excess hormones, she recommends a small smoothie with berries, flaxseeds and a teaspoon of spirulina for liver support.

DeLong proposes snacking on blood sugar-friendly chia seed pudding with berries, apples with yogurt and peanut butter dip, veggies and hummus, or whole grain crackers with guacamole. She also advises controlling portions. “Taking your time when eating anything and staying present and mindful can help prevent snacks from turning into meals,” she counsels.

2 Tbsp chia seeds

1 tsp vanilla extract

¼ cup pumpkin puree

1 Tbsp chopped pecans

In a bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, chia seeds and vanilla extract. Cover with a lid and refrigerate for at least two hours or overnight.

In a glass, layer the ingredients, starting with ½ cup of chia pudding, followed by ⅛ cup of pumpkin puree, ¼ cup chia pudding, ⅛ cup of pumpkin puree and ¼ cup of chia pudding. Top with chopped pecans.

CHIA PROTEIN BARS

YIELD: 12 BARS

1½ cup pitted dates, packed

½ cup almond butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

¼ tsp kosher salt

1 cup raw walnut pieces

½ cup chia seeds

½ cup hemp seeds

½ cup unsweetened, shredded coconut

½ cup non-dairy dark chocolate, chopped

⅓ cup raw cacao powder

Line a 9-by-9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

In a food processor, pulse the dates until a thick paste forms. Add the almond butter, vanilla and salt and pulse again until thoroughly combined. Add the walnuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds, coconut, chocolate and cacao powder and pulse until thoroughly incorporated.

Using a spatula, press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan and freeze overnight.

Remove the pan from the freezer and cut the mixture into 12 bars. Place the bars in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for up to three months.

Women’s Wellness And Dentistry...

The two are deeply interconnected, as hormonal fluctuations throughout a woman’s life can significantly influence her oral health

From Puberty to Menopause, changes in estrogen and progesterone levels can affect the gums, oral tissues, and even bone density in the jaw. During these times many women experience increased gum sensitivity, swelling, or bleeding.

Pregnancy brings another set of challenges - hormonal shifts can lead to pregnancy gingivitis,a higher risk of gum disease, and complications like oral infections that may impact both mother and baby. Morning sickness can also expose teeth to stomach acids, increasing the risk of enamel erosion.

Later in life, menopause may lead to dry mouth, burning sensations, altered taste, and even accelerated bone loss, which can affect teeth and jaw health.

Another important aspect of oral wellness is tooth alignment. Properly aligned, non-crowded teeth are easier to clean and less likely to harbor harmful bacteria that contribute to plaque buildup, gum disease, and decay. Crowded teeth create tight, hard-to-reach spaces where bacteria can accumulate, making effective brushing and flossing more difficult. This increases the risk of chronic inflammation and systemic effects linked to oral infections.

Dental professionals play a vital role in supporting women through these life stages by providing guidance, early detection, and tailored care. A preventive and holistic approach - including regular dental visits, good oral hygiene, orthodontic evaluations, a balanced diet rich in calciumand vitamin D, hydration, and open communication about medications or hormonal treatments can help women maintain optimal oral and systemic health. By understanding this connection, women are empowered to prioritize their dental care as a key part of their overall wellness journey. Dr. Elahe Wissinger
