s experiences unfold, they can become reference points for navigating our priorities and co-creating the reality to which we awaken every day. Unconventional ways are often the answer to forging new and higher ground in assimilating the past with the present and exploring how we assign meaning to the circumstances that have shaped our lives. Simply paying attention to memories and beliefs sharpJacqueline & Kendra ens our awareness into a masterful spiritual lens. Through excavating and deconstructing the details of our lives, we can discover personal treasures and build from the essentials of self-worth and wisdom to create miracles. Our stories heal us by honoring our inner landscapes and recovering and acknowledging the many layers. Akin to the body’s function of autophagy, where recycling inherently rich and life-giving nutrients enable cell components to be cleaned and restored, our psyche returns to recollect and integrate the fine points of our experiences. Expressing our “voice”, or authenticity, is directly linked to the intuitive and diligent process of homeostasis and repair. This issue’s theme, “rethinking cancer”, introduces alternative ways to address a widespread and deeply personal experience. Our feature, on page 20, is supported by a sidebar glimpse into the creative writing world of Melissa Greene, founder and director of Write From The Heart, and her collaboration and work in area hospitals’ programs and subsequent new research into the positive effects of this form of therapeutic sharing. Modern health care is beginning to recognize the benefits of offering formal and informal outlets through which patients can gently and professionally access the most basic element of healing, self-compassion. Narrative medicine is this dynamic approach that involves paying attention to much more than the physical dynamics of care. As patients, caregivers and healthcare providers explore individual stories and creative expression, a shared learning experience is created and the healing relationship can expand to integrate all that the journey holds. The approach is illuminated in esteemed educational institutions, including Columbia University, where Rita Charon, M.D., Ph.D., has become a leading voice in the movement, which she describes as providing a “commitment to understanding patients’ lives, caring for the caregivers, and giving voice to the suffering.” One of the oldest traditions, storytelling can access the deepest fiber of being and allow for release into original wholeness. Mark Nepo’s beautiful reflections in his bestselling Book of Awakening, portray the humility, strength and dignity required in his progression from patient to survivor. By recalling earlier life challenges, Nepo was able to sharpen his insight into the trauma of his illness and attain a profound gratitude for the experience. A raw truth shines through his stories of suffering; pain is transformed and perspective shifts as faith brings re-discovery of life, day after day.

Choice always reigns, be it in word, belief or attitude, and along with self-reflection, this August issue brings forth various natural options for attuning to a state of resilience. Partnering more intimately with being well becomes a rhythm for shifting the curative context into a higher realm.

newsbriefs KarmaFest Camping Weekend Comes to Pottstown

K

armaFest, a holistic, psychic and yoga festival weekend of camping and fun, returns to Pottstown for the Labor Day weekend, September 1 through 4, at Fellowship Farm. The festival will feature enlightening lectures, meditation, live music, swimming, vegan and vegetarian food, 50 to 75 interesting vendors and a full weekend of yoga. Also available will be special workshops and a children’s program. KarmaFest was founded by Patricia Hawse in 2005, after she experienced the effects of holistic health firsthand while serving for the Red Cross in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Witnessing the immediate effects of yoga and meditation to relieve tension and increase energy and balance, Hawse vowed to spread the word through a festival—KarmaFest. “This year, music is the thing!” says Hawse. Headlining is the neo-psychedelic rock band Flux Capacitor, which will perform Sunday night. Other groups include Stella’s Infirmary, Cosmic Jerry Band, Gypsy Funk Squad, Jug Funk Boys, Montaj and Mountainwolf. “Staying the full weekend is the best part of this festival,” Hawse adds. “Lots of camping out in tents and others in the dorms. The pool, the bonfire, the drum circles—that’s what brings us back for this special, annual celebration at this excellent venue.” Natural Awakenings of Bucks and Montgomery Counties, Lehigh Valley and Lancaster/Berks editions are proud to be supporting media sponsors of this year's Karmafest. Campers can arrive after 6 p.m. on September 1 and will check out by noon on September 4. Daytime-only participants are also welcome from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., September 2 and 3.

Cost: Full weekend pass, with three-night stay, starts at $111 for tent camping and $188 for dorm stay (children under 12 are free unless staying in dorm). Student tent rates and meal plans are available. Day passes: $20. Location: Fellowship Farm, 2488 Sanatoga Rd., Pottstown. For more information, call Diane at 610-220-7817, email Patti@KarmaFest.com or visit KarmaFest.com. See ad, page 9.

I ASSETS Presents The Great Social Enterprise Pitch

T

he Great Social Enterprise Pitch is an idea incubator and business plan competition for concepts that use a business model and revenues to have a positive social or environmental impact in Lancaster. There are 11 business ideas currently working through a business plan incubator process. They will all participate in a crowdfunding phase in September to raise funds for their ideas, and the top five will pitch their ideas in front of judges and an audience for cash and pro-bono prizes at the finale event. The crowdfunding launch event will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m., September 6, at ASSETS, in Lancaster. The finale event, Live Pitch, is an introduction to the businesses, and will take place at 7 p.m., October 6, at the Ware Center, in Lancaster. Community members are invited to attend. The Great Social Enterprise Pitch highlights different ways of doing business, and it will introduce the audience to some great local businesses in the community who are producing amazing products and creating social change through business. The team at ASSETS believes that business can transform a community. They train businesses to look at the triple bottom line––people, planet and profit. They want to encourage consumers to support the local businesses who are starting to look at environmental and social performance in the same way that they look at financial performance. Locations: ASSETS, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster; Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. For more information, call 717393-6089, email Info@AssetsPA.org or visit LancasterPitch.com. See ad, page 8.

Rossi combines knowledge, experience and intuitive guidance to offer clients a unique holistic approach with many options for a customized path to wellness. IMPROVE the Quality of YOUR LIFE!

Stress Can Be More Than a Pain in the Neck

aren Carnabucci, licensed clinical social worker and nationally boardcertified master trainer, educator and practitioner in psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy, continues to offer her groups, professional training classes and events during the summer, to ensure that people have every opportunity to address and heal family wounds so they can live fully and freely. Summer is the season of family vacations, reunions and other kinds of family time. For some people, these activities are joyful. For others, feelings arise of loss, disappointment, something missing or someone absent. Carnabucci’s groups are non-traditional and action-oriented, such as Make a Vision Board and Find Your Heart’s Desire, rather than traditional talk psychotherapy. The training programs demonstrate and teach mental health professionals, other health professionals, educators and others how to integrate action-oriented and ancestral methods into their work and their lives. “Sometimes the wounds we carry are fairly fresh, such as a family conflict, a divorce or other estrangement. At other times, the roots of the difficulty are hidden; it seems like the personal struggle or family disturbance has always been present and that there is no solution available,” explains Carnabucci. “My groups Unfolding Love take a gentle look at the dynamics behind the present-day situation, sometimes reaching many generations into the ancestry. Information is revealed that makes sense according to the family’s history, and we find a shift in consciousness that creates a feeling of healing.” For a schedule of events and more information, visit RealTrueKaren.com. On Sep. 9 Join the Walk for Suicide Awareness

O

n September 9, Walk for D.E.S. will be held at Manheim Township Park, in Neffsville. The name is an acronym that means Detect Early Signs, and the walk is intended to honor the life of someone who died by suicide, show support to survivors of suicide, forward the cause of suicide awareness and prevention across Lancaster County and provide resources and tools aimed at preventing suicide. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m, and the walk/run starts at 11 a.m. The event includes a raffle, silent auction and survivors’ memorial tribute. On June 6, 2011, Mark and Debbie Schantzer lost their 21-year-old son, Desmond, to suicide. There were no signs, no warnings and no answers. Nothing prepared them for this tragedy. Desmond’s death rocked the very core of their family’s existence, and the pain they have known is beyond comprehension. They have found that sitting in grief is debilitating, but working through grief is healing. For this reason, Mark, Debbie and their daughter, Danielle, joined with community partners to create the D.E.S. Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to raise awareness of, and prevent, suicide. The goal of Walk for D.E.S. is to raise much needed funding to support the work of dedicated partners that are committed to raising awareness about suicide, working to prevent these tragedies and providing grief counseling and support when heartbreak occurs. The foundation is working to fund activities supporting community-wide suicide awareness and

prevention activities and to provide monetary support for individuals and families impacted by suicide. Partnering organizations dedicated to the Walk for D.E.S., and also working to advance suicide awareness and prevention across Lancaster County, include: Pathways Center for Grief & Loss (Hospice and Community Care), Lancaster Regional Hospital, Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, Survivors of Suicide (Lancaster Chapter), One Less Thing Foundation, PerformCare, Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition and Mental Health America. “Every 12.8 minutes someone in the U.S. dies by suicide. Nearly 1 million people make a suicide attempt every year. In Lancaster County, approximately 50 individuals take their lives by suicide each year,” notes Mark. “Beyond the numbers, the ripple effect of suicide is staggering when viewed in the context of pain, loss and suffering for those who are left behind.” Community members are invited to become sponsors, walkers, or to make a donation. “Help us lift the stigma that surrounds suicide and mental illness,” requests Debbie. “Help us save lives and restore hope through awareness, prevention and intervention.” Location: Manheim Township Park, 209 Petersburg Rd., Neffsville. eventspotlight Hospice & Community Care Hosts 33rd Annual Labor Day Auction

T

he team at Hospice and Community Care is has announced the 33rd Annual Labor Day Auction, being held at the Solanco Fairgrounds, in Quarryville. The two-day event, presented by Turkey Hill Dairy since 2000, will take place beginning at 7:30 a.m. on September 2 and 4. “Last year was the first year we held it at the fairgrounds. It ended up being a wonderful location with more buildings and plenty of space,” says Ashley Peck, Communications Manager for Hospice & Community Care. “Each year, attendance continues to grow and more items are donated for the auctions, so this is the perfect space to grow with us.” Each year, this traditional auction, complete with Amish auctioneers and bid spotters, attracts thousands of attendees. “Not only is the event fun, but it’s a very worthwhile fundraiser as all proceeds go back to the patients and their families who use our hospice, palliative and grief support services,” says Peck. Last year’s Labor Day Auction raised more than $700,000. While, historically, Monday has been the biggest auction day, this year, the Art Auction has been moved to Saturday at 1 p.m. and features many amazing pieces, including a signed print of Remembering Nickel Mines by artist Glenn Blue, a former state trooper assigned to work the West Nickel Mines schoolhouse shooting in 2006. Also up for grabs on Saturday are gift certificates, gift baskets and various new and used items in addition to a Day of Care Auction and Plant Auction. “We wanted to spread everything out so that both days are jam-packed with amazing things,” says Peck. Monday attendees can look forward to the popular Sports Memorabilia Auction, with guest auctioneer Sports Talk host Eric May, along with other auctions featuring plants, new and used furniture, outdoor furniture, quilts, sheds and more. There will also be a raffle drawing for a 2017 Ford Mustang. One of the other highlights to this free, family-friendly event is the homemade Amish food. “Even if you don’t buy any auction items, come for the food,” invites Peck. “There will be fried donuts, sticky buns, breakfast logs, made-to-order omelets and all kinds of delicious Amish fare.” Several new menu items will also be available including a salad bar and pork barbecue dinner. Hospice & Community Care has enjoyed partnering with local businesses, individuals and volunteers to sponsor this event for over three decades. “We feel very blessed to play such an integral role in the community. It’s wonderful to see so many local businesses, community members and over 400 volunteers come together like this. Ask anybody who attends the auction and they somehow have a connection to Hospice & Community Care. The Auction truly brings the community together in such a fun way and for such a great cause.” Cost: Free parking and admission. Location: 101 Park Ave., Quarryville. Rosemary Gladstar Returns to MidAtlantic Women’s Herbal Conference by Sheila Julson

T

he MidAtlantic Women’s Herbal Conference (MAWHC), honoring the age-old wisdom of natural and herbal medicines, takes place September 30 through October 1, at the Kempton Community Center, in Kempton, Pennsylvania. MAWHC, now in its seventh year, welcomes the return of Rosemary Gladstar, an icon in the herbal medicine world and coRosemary Gladstar founder of Sage Mountain Herbs, in Vermont. Gladstar, author of several books about herbal health, also established United Plant Savers, an organization that raises awareness and secures the longevity of endangered plants. The weekend-long conference features many general introductory classes teaching attendees how to use plant medicine in their family lives. “The conference reaches the beginner—somebody that dabbles in plant medicine for their

own personal use—as well as health professionals that want to integrate it into their medical practices,” says Charis Lindrooth, chiropractor, herbalist and founder of MAWHC. Other featured workshop leaders include Susan Leopold, Ph.D. and executive director of United Plant Savers. Leopold will give the Saturday opening address focused on this year’s conference theme, “Plant Allies”. Donna Bryant Winston, a registered nurse and community herbalist, will lead a popular soap-making class. Clinical herbalist Kate Gilday offers pine needle basket making, and Lindrooth will teach Keeping Your Brain Brilliant, a session on natural care for the brain. The class is an introduction to her six-week online course for people who want to preserve their cognitive powers as they age. Attendees can also learn about natural skin care, building an herbal dispensary, aphrodisiac powers of plants, kitchen medicine, garden secrets, fermentation and more. Vendors will be on hand to offer natural products, an array of healthy and vegan foods and a kid’s camp promises a day of play and nature education for children ages 3 through 12. Saturday winds down with a drum circle. On-site camping options are available Friday and Saturday night. Lindrooth says the MAWHC has grown since its beginnings, nearly doubling in size. “Our conference is modeled after Rosemary Gladstar’s herbal conference, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year,” she says. “Ours is a smaller, more intimate version of that.” MAWHC is also starting a new event that will include men: “Allies for Plants and People” is scheduled for June 9, 2018, at the Circle of Seasons Waldorf Charter School, in Fogelsville, Pennsylvania. David Winston, internationally acclaimed herbalist, teacher and founder of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies and Herbalist & Alchemist Apothecary, will lead the symposium. Cost: varies; see website for details. Location: 83 Community Center Dr., Kempton. For more information, call 610-6839363, email MAWomensHerbalConference@gmail.com or visit WomensHerbal.com. study from the University of Washington, in Seattle, tested the relationship of immune system functioning to lack of adequate sleep. To rule out genetic factors, which experts say account for 31 to 55 percent of individual sleep patterns, researchers tested blood samples from 11 pairs of adult identical twins (genetic matches) with differing sleep habits. They found that the immune system was depressed in the twin that slept less. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans are sleeping 1.5 to two hours less than they did 100 years ago, and more than 30 percent of working people average fewer than six hours a night. Dr. Nathanial Watson, lead author and co-director of the university’s Sleep Medicine Center at Harborview Medical Center, observes, “Seven or more hours of sleep is recommended for optimal health.”

esearchers from Indiana University-Purdue University, in Indianapolis, set out to find out if massage therapy—typically an out-of-pocket expense not covered under most insurance plans—can provide effective treatment for individuals suffering with chronic back pain. The study followed 76 primary care patients with chronic back pain for 24 weeks. The researchers measured pain, disability and quality of life at the beginning of the study, after 12 weeks and again after 24 weeks of massage therapy. Each patient was referred to a licensed massage therapist for 10 no-cost sessions in a real-world environment during the initial 12 weeks. More than half of the patients that completed the core study reported clinically meaningful improvements for physical and mental measures. For bodily pain, 40 percent were clinically improved. Older adults and Baby Boomers reported the highest percentage of changes. Plus, the study found that sufferers that avoided taking painkillers were twice as likely to experience reduced pain than those using opioids.

Ugly Produce Gains Status Due to customer requests and petitions, more stores are beginning to stock the one in five pieces of produce that never made the cut before due to quirky shapes or other blemishes. Often, these are displayed next to their better-looking, more expensive counterparts to give consumers an eco-friendly choice. The 133 billion pounds worth of misshapen or scarred fruits and vegetables annually plowed under, buried in a landfill or fed to livestock is sharply at odds with the reality that 48 million Americans face food insecurity. Whole Foods Market created a pilot program in some of its California stores, testing sales in April 2016 with Imperfect Produce (ImperfectProduce. com), a service that delivers to homes. Walmart brought weather-blemished apples to 300 of its Florida stores to kick off their imperfect role in the movement. Five Pittsburgh Giant Eagle stores call their program Produce with Personality, and focus on navel oranges, russet potatoes, peppers and apples. Fourteen Hannaford stores in Albany, New York, offer the Misfits line, while donating unsold produce to local nonprofits. Hy-Vee’s 242 stores, located in eight central states, rolled out the Misfits last December.

Tuna Turnaround

Lower Mercury Levels Tied to Drop in Coal Emissions Levels of highly toxic mercury contamination in Atlantic bluefin tuna are rapidly declining, a trend that has been linked to reduced mercury emissions in North America, according to a new study published in Environmental Science & Technology. Average mercury concentrations dropped by more than 2 percent per year, for a total decline of 19 percent between 2004 and 2012. Scientists believe that most of that reduction has occurred because of a shift away from coal, the major source of mercury emissions, to natural gas and renewable fuels. Pollution control requirements imposed by the federal government have also cut mercury emissions, but these have been rolled back or eliminated by President Trump’s commitment to “bring back coal.” Source: Scientific American

Orca Finale

Sea Mammals Freed from Showtime The California Orca Responsibility and Care Advancement Act, sponsored by Congressman Adam Schiff, is aimed to end the famous SeaWorld orca shows. “It means no more wild capture, no more breeding. We would essentially phase out the captive orcas that are currently in these water parks,” says Schiff. This means that SeaWorld must end their Shamu shows by the end of this year. However, the animals already at the San Diego park will continue to live there. Parks in Orlando and San Antonio will end their shows by 2019. Under pressure from activists and faced with declining ticket sales, SeaWorld is now moving to end its theatrical orca shows and breeding program. They announced the unveiling of a new attraction this summer, Orca Encounter, as an educational experience. Gabriela Cowperthwaite, director of the documentary film Blackfish, says that the new show is designed to make the audience feel better, not the animals. “The trainers aren’t safe, and the whales aren’t happy,” she states. “They’re still just doing manic circles around concrete swimming pools.” The company is developing its first SeaWorld park without orcas in the Middle-Eastern country of Abu Dhabi.

LIVE CANCER-FREE Natural Ways to Prevent and Heal Cancer by Linda Sechrist

V

ictorious warriors against cancer are speaking to other patients about their journeys of recovery and healing. Two who regularly speak to physicians, as well, are Glenn Sabin, author of n of 1: One Man’s Harvarddocumented Remission of Incurable Cancer Using Only Natural Methods, and Kathy Mydlach-Bero, author of EAT: An Unconventional Decade in the Life of a Cancer Patient. Their stories demonstrate the healing effectiveness of healthy lifestyle measures still widely categorized as prevention.

Whole Life Triumphs

Determined to become free of the chronic lymphocytic leukemia that had defined his life for 20 years, Sabin, who lives near Washington, D.C., appointed himself the subject of his own research experiment. He subsequently became a poster child for the remedial synergy of biological individuality, a whole systems approach to integrative oncology and self-induced healing through lifestyle and supplement interventions. 20

Lancaster-Berks

Sabin now dedicates his business development firm, FON Consulting, to advancing integrative medicine as the new standard of care. His mission is to open minds to the idea that knowledge, empowerment and self-efficacy are our best allies against a life-limiting diagnosis, and we can do much to help the healing process. Writing to Joe Biden regarding the vice president’s Cancer Moonshot initiative, he candidly describes America’s present cancer-friendly environment. “The public has become conditioned to existing in a broken food chain that remains in disrepair due to misguided farming subsidies [and] untested or otherwise questionable chemicals (many of which are banned in other countries) that are present in the water we drink, the air we breathe, food we consume and products we use. Current therapies or those in the drug pipeline won’t improve the 50/50 odds of developing cancer. What will have the greatest impact are consumer education toward powerful lifestyle changes and access to

she learned from research regarding Avastin, a pharmaceutical created to combat harmful growth of new blood cells, and the benefits of growing and eating foods containing angiogenesisinhibiting compounds that oppose such growth and so work to prevent, improve and avert recurrences of chronic disease. “Cancer hijacks the angiogenesis process triggered by inflammation and keeps it permanently activated to ensure that cancerous cells receive a dedicated, uninterrupted blood supply,” explains Mydlach-Bero. For three years, she largely consumed only items from the list of angiogenesis-inhibiting foods now posted at KathyMydlachBero.com/food-research. These include green tea, strawberries, blackberries, red tart cherries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, grapefruit, lemons, tomatoes, cinnamon, purple potatoes, kale, grape seed oil and pomegranate. In 2008, she completely replaced both the drugs to combat the side effects of chemo and radiation and a long-term medication for preventing recurrence with healthful foods. Her physicians were admittedly uncomfortable with her decision to

the building blocks of basic health.” Mydlach-Bero made her remarkable recovery from rare and unrelated aggressive Stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer and a high-grade tumor in her head and neck. To tell her story, the resident of Delafield, Wisconsin, relied on her 18 journals as a surrogate memory to chronicle a 10-year journey of courageous exploration, self-evolution, self-advocacy and self-transformation that connected her with her healing potential. Then the mother of two young daughters, Mydlach-Bero rejected a 21-month prognosis in 2005, along with the notion that disease and medicine would determine her fate. Defying the odds, she applied what

combine chemotherapy and radiation treatments with “food as medicine”, reiki, prayer, meditation, mindfulness and supplement intervention. But that didn’t deter her. To awaken others to the practicality of food as medicine, she founded NuGenesis Farm, in Pewaukee, a nonprofit modeled after her home practice.

Prevention is Paramount

Pioneering physicians and researchers agree with Sabin and Myldach-Bero that comprehensive prevention, the key to solving the cancer epidemic, is missing from conventional medicine. Leading voices include Dr. Andrew Weil, founder and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Arizona (AzCIM), in Tucson; Dr. Carlos M. Garcia, founder of Utopia Wellness, near Tampa, Florida; advocate Susan Silberstein, Ph.D., founder of BeatCancer.org, in Richboro, Pennsylvania; and Ajay Goel, Ph.D., director of the Center for Epigenetics, Cancer Prevention and Cancer Genomics at Baylor University Medical Center’s Research Institute, in Dallas. Weil pioneered the earliest efforts to develop a comprehensive curriculum in evidence-based integrative medicine and the field of integrative oncology. “We’ve known for nearly 15 years that inflammation is the root cause of many chronic diseases. Since 2012 scientific evidence has proven that a healthy life-

We’ve known for nearly 15 years that inflammation is the root cause of many chronic diseases. ~Andrew Weil style and an anti-inflammatory diet can influence various cancers,” says Weil. His curriculum for health professionals and the general public was the first to cite the role of a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet in cancer prevention and treatment. “Health professionals graduate armed with a better understanding of the complex interactions between cancer, gut microbiome and nutrition,” advises Weil, whose paradigm inspires his chain of True Food Kitchen restaurants. It includes lots of fruits and vegetables, moderate amounts of whole or cracked grains, al dente pasta, healthy fats and plant-based proteins from legumes, nuts and seafood as well as poultry and lean, antibiotic-free grassfed meats, cheese and eggs. Plus, he likes white, green and oolong teas, fresh herbs and spices, up to two glasses of red wine a day (less for women; possibly none for those at high-risk for breast cancer), and dark chocolate for antioxidant polyphenols. Integrative Oncology, authored by Weil and Dr. Donald I. Abrams, an

integrative oncologist, is mandatory reading for AzCIM students that learn to use complementary interventions in prevention and conventional cancer care. Subjects such as antioxidants, cannabinoids, energy medicine, mindbody medicine, music and expressive art therapies are covered, as well as naturopathic oncology, plus the roles that community and spirituality play in prevention and treatment. Goel’s 20-year career in cancer prevention research has produced a wealth of related articles. Among his findings, he advises, “Curcumin, a yellow compound extracted from turmeric, has become a gold standard for prevention and the natural treatment of many chronic health conditions, including colon cancer. It targets cancer stem cells, disrupts cancer cell communication, triggers cancer cell death and helps to prevent cancerous mutations to cells. It’s also been shown to improve the efficacy of conventional treatments including fewer adverse effects.” He recommends only taking turmeric products with BCM-95 percent active curcuminoids.

Customized Protocols

Considering each individual’s biological individuality as a Petri dish, Garcia’s studies help achieve an anti-cancer life. He advises, “There is no ‘one size fits all’ medical protocol box for cancer treatment.

Customized modifications to lifestyle and diet are required because food nutrients directly impact the mechanisms by which cancer cells grow and spread. The right nutrition can reverse a compromised immune system, which research shows is a major contributor to the development of cancer.” Whether for improvement or prevention, Garcia’s patient protocols always begin with a comprehensive evaluation appointment to learn about the individual he is treating. For cancer patients, his two-phase, eight-week program involves immune-enhancing therapies followed by immunotherapy aimed to de-cloak the camouflaged protein coating of wily cancer cells so the body’s immune system can identify and destroy them.

Mind/Body Detox

To maintain good health, Judy Seeger, a doctor of naturopathy near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, recommends a regular detoxification regimen to cleanse environmental and product toxins and toxic emotions. Through experience, she has learned that individuals living with cancer need to substantially support their abnormally functioning elimination system to rid it of dead proteins from destroyed cancer cells and chemotherapy drugs that are overtaxing the immune system. “Clearing out toxic, stressful emotions that produce acid, weaken the

Barshinger Cancer Institute, The Penn State Cancer Institute at Hershey Medical Center, The Wellspan York Cancer Center, and Wellspan’s Gettysburg Hospital. Taught in an atmosphere of warmth, whimsy, compassion and trust, Greene’s cancer workshops are gentle, non-intimidating and full of life. There are no grades or tests. Grammar, spelling and punctuation don’t matter. Sharing is optional. Patients learn techniques to relax, stay in the moment and write without fear. They discover how playfulness and humor relieve self-consciousness, perfectionism and self-doubt, opening the door to the fun of creating. They gain the courage to explore the feelings surrounding their cancer experience, while transforming fears and revelations onto the page in an environment of sanctuary and safety. Greene recently spoke to 250 patients and their families at the Penn State Cancer Institute’s Survivorship Celebration on the healing benefits of writing. She also taught a month-long clinical study workshop at PSCI, led by oncologists researching the effects of creative writing on the mood of a study group of 15 terminal patients. The results will be published in a medical journal this October. A cancer patient from one of Greene’s workshops wrote: “In class, there’s a connection between us all––a difficult one––yet through writing, it becomes uplifting and fosters courage. Creating together is healing to the very soul; it reminds us that we’re not alone in this.” Greene teaches her year-round, private writing programs to adults, children and teens, both in groups and one-on-one. She also collaborates with Lancaster schools and therapists, inspiring all ages to love writing. “A little laughter smooths the way,” she enthuses. Silberstein categorizes cancer as epidemic. She speaks regularly regarding preventing cancer and its recurrence at medical and nursing schools, continuing oncology nursing education programs and universities. “What is needed more than new treatment research is public education regarding the true causes of cancer and continuing education credits in lifestyle training for medical professionals,” she says. r. Owen Allison and his team at Susquehanna Dental Arts, in Columbia, believe that health and well-being start in the mouth. As a holistic dentist, Allison works to advance wholeness to prevent health issues associated with poor dental health, such as mercury poisoning, fluoride poisoning, heart disease, diabetes and others. Part of his diagnostic protocol utilizes the VELscope Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System. This device comprises a handheld scope that can detect oral tissue abnormalities, including pre-cancer and cancer, using a harmless blue light that stimulates the natural fluorescence in the soft tissues of VELscope Vx the mouth. Its extreme sensitivity to tissue changes helps the team at Susquehanna Dental Arts to see problems not visible to the naked eye, thus discovering oral disease before it can be seen under ordinary light. “Since tissue abnormalities can be detected in earlier stages using the VELscope Vx, we are able to provide patients with a better outcome,” notes Allison. “Unlike other similar devices used for examinations, the VELscope Vx doesn’t require dyes or prolonged testing procedures, which means it can be performed at our office during a routine exam in just a few minutes.” Allison knows that dentistry is about two things: relationships and health. He advocates recommending the best and safest treatment possible, which includes refraining from the use of toxic dental products. He has raised the bar in dentistry to bring the very best care and service to clients of all ages. “We pledge to never confuse any temporary or partial fix with one that cares for a patient’s wholeness of health,” explains Allison. “We at Susquehanna Dental Arts advocate for holistic health, now and in the foreseeable future.” Susquehanna Dental Arts is located at 100 S. 18th St., in Columbia. Rodale Institute Launches Organic Industrial Hemp Research

R

odale Institute, the nation’s leading organic farming research institution, was granted one of 16 permits for research by the PA Department of Agriculture Industrial Hemp Pilot Project. They have started a new industrial hemp research project focused on examining the crop’s role in soil health and regenerative organic agriculture. It is the first time in 80 years that hemp will be grown legally in Pennsylvania. Rodale Institute’s multi-year hemp research project is being partially funded by a generous contribution of $100,000 from Dr. Bronner’s. “We have the utmost respect for the values and mission of the Rodale Institute, and the paramount work they are pursuing to scientifically demonstrate the efficacy of regenerative agriculture and organic farming,” says David Bronner, CEO of Dr. Bronner’s. “Their new foray into hemp cultivation will reveal important data about the crop’s role in the sustainable agriculture systems of the future, furthering the evidence that hemp farming should be legalized throughout the U.S., so that all farmers can benefit from hemp’s economic and environmental opportunities.” Overall cost of the project is projected to be $75,000 to 100,000 per year. An additional $5,000 pledge of support for Rodale Institute’s hemp research was made by Nutiva’s CEO and founder John Roulac. Industrial hemp, a versatile plant grown for its fiber, seed or oil, was a valuable cash crop and a major industry in Pennsylvania for more than 260 years. Due to its close relationship to the marijuana plant, hemp production became a casualty of a 1933 law banning marijuana, and was later named a Schedule 1 drug by the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. However, changes made to the 2014 Federal Farm Bill now allow for hemp to be grown for research purposes by departments of agriculture or institutions of higher education. “This is an exciting venture for Rodale Institute, as we explore the implications that industrial hemp could have for organic farmers,” says Jeff Moyer, Executive Director of Rodale Institute. “This could give us an opportunity to expand farmers’ crop rotation, while helping farmers combat weed pressure, improve soil health and sequester carbon. For us, it all comes back to healthy soil and regenerative organic agriculture. We know that healthy soil equals healthy food, equals healthy people and a healthy planet.” For more information and updates about the Rodale Institute Industrial Hemp Research, visit RodaleInstitute.org/industrialhemp. Is Your Mattress The Problem?

How to get a good night's sleep, without harmful chemicals

T

ake this quiz:

1. Do you have back pain when you wake up? 2. Neck pain? Stiffness or soreness? 3. Does it take you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep? 4. Do you experience restless sleep? Toss and turn at night? If you answered “yes” two times or more, this may be the most important article you read all year. Here’s why… While you sleep, your immune system recovers and prepares for the day ahead. it replenishes every cell in your body. Low-quality, uncomfortable mattresses have been linked to discomfort and pain, which can prevent quality sleep. People who struggle with sleep deprivation may suffer from irritability, depression, over-eating— and even face a higher risk for Alzheimer’s. if your mattress is filled with chemical toxins, airborne allergens, or worse, your body is doing battle with those things rather than repairing itself. You’re losing valuable energy each night instead of healing your body and revitalizing your mind. And all of that can wreak havoc on your health and well being.

What’s In Your Mattress?

The following information may be disturbing to some. That’s because the environmental Protection Agency has identified at least four possibly dangerous chemicals commonly found in some synthetic mattresses— benzene, propane, naphthalene and styrene—especially bedding made in China and overseas, where such governing agencies do not exist. Consider these facts: ● Typical mattresses made from artificial materials are known to emit potentially harmful gases in your bedroom—a phenomenon known as off-gassing. ● Laboratory researchers in the U.S. and europe have identified up to 61 potentially harmful chemicals that off-gas from typical synthetic mattresses. ● exposure to these 61 chemicals has been associated with irritation of the skin, eyes and digestive systems. ● Additionally, the chemicals offgassed by synthetic mattresses have been associated with headache, fatigue, depression and even hearing loss. ● Your skin, the most porous entry point into your body, has contact with a mattress for 8 hours every night, on average.

● Children, who breathe faster than adults, are especially vulnerable to chemical exposure. every night, we lie down with minimal clothing for a seemingly good night’s sleep. But in reality, while lying on a conventional mattress, we are breathing in and absorbing through our skin a range of chemicals from synthetic materials—chemicals that can disrupt our sleep cycles and negatively impact our health. Our mattresses emit gases from a toxic brew of components used to create them. From the polyurethane foam used in the padding to fire retardants and other additives, conventional mattresses continue to release chemicals in gaseous form long after they roll out of the factory. even after they have finished off-gassing, the chemically based construction of a conventional mattress provides an ideal environment for dust and dust mites, whose excrement is the #1 trigger for asthma attacks. And get this. You know those white labels on a mattress that say, “Do Not Remove”? incredibly, the law actually allows manufacturers to include potentially hazardous chemicals in your mattress without disclosing the fact on any label. But if a true list of ingredients were available for conventional mattresses, it would likely include TDI (a common component), a known carcinogen, which can cause respiratory ailments such as bronchitis and asthma. in addition, liver damage and breathing problems have been linked to vinyl chloride monomers, another common mattress material. The list goes on. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that you would be given information about any of these chemicals from a manufacturer of conventional, synthetic mattresses.

The Natural Alternative

One of the most significant actions we can take to reduce our exposure to toxins and improve our overall health is to make changes to the one household item that is in direct contact with our bodies for one third of our lives—our mattresses. “There are more ways than ever to sleep better and wake up painfree on a natural, organic mattress,” says Ben McClure, president of

advertorial Gardner’s Mattress & More, in Lancaster, PA. “Many people, like me, are in search of a natural sleep system. I was shocked to learn that toxic emissions from mattresses are a major source of daily pollution in our lives,” says McClure. An all-natural, organic mattress is free of potentially harmful chemicals. Instead, natural materials like natural rubber are used. Rubber is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, making it ideal for allergy sufferers. Also, natural rubber is antimicrobial, inhibiting the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew, which can cause asthma and respiratory distress. No synthetic materials are added to provide these benefits. “All rubber used in our natural mattresses is from the sap of a rubber tree, which can yield rubber for up to 30 years. When a tree is done producing rubber, it is taken down and turned into furniture. A new tree is then planted in its place, thus making natural rubber a sustainable bedding component,” says McClure. What’s the difference between an organic mattress and a conventional one? “Organic mattresses are crafted from natural materials. Conventional mattresses are made mostly of artificial materials from nonrenewable sources, such as plastic and other petrochemicals,” says McClure. Do organic mattresses come in different firmness? “Yes, there are two main types of organic mattresses: Natural rubber and inner-spring. Both styles are available with varying firmness options to suit anyone’s sleep needs,” says McClure.

pillow to test out. “We offer the only Dream Room, where you can spend 15 minutes to 4 hours resting or even sleeping on a mattress, with 100% sanitary linens, blankets and pillows so people can truly ‘test drive” any natural bedding,” says McClure. 3. Protect yourself by insisting on a strong guarantee. “I know people are tired of sleeping on a worn-out, chemical-laden mattress. That’s why we give every customer a 120 night Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee to exchange if it doesn’t deliver the sleep you want,” says McClure. If you’re not sleeping well or you’re worried about toxic chemicals in your bedroom, consider this: The two things in life you spend the most time on are work and sleep. How much of your remaining hours on earth do you want to waste losing sleep on an uncomfortable, chemical-laden mattress? That’s a question that many are asking.

The nursing team participates in the Lancaster Red Rose Oncology Nursing Society Chapter, which enriches and supports educational opportunities for its members. “For a nurse, it is a privilege to enter a person’s life at their most vulnerable time and be able to provide loving assistance and treatment,” shares Gerhart. Recognizing the need to administer to the whole patient, LCC specializes in care beyond treatment. An array of support programs and other services are offered to help patients, families and friends cope with issues that often feel overwhelming. On-location services include a registered dietician, a licensed social worker, a physician-directed dispensary, a laboratory and clinical trials that are provided for the ease and convenience of the patients. The physician-directed dispensary provides patients with the option to fill their oral medication prescriptions onsite, saving time and effort. The onsite laboratory is accredited by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Laboratories, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and the American Association of Bioanalysts. Staffed by licensed Medical Technologists with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the lab offers a large test menu of studies––performed in-house for LCC patients as well as outside patients––taking as little as a few minutes or completion by the end of the same day. Studies not performed in house are directed to the appropriate hospital or reference laboratory for testing. State-of-the-art equipment is kept in excellent condition by daily maintenance and cleansing procedures, as mandated both by the manufacturers, as well as the Center’s licensing agencies. Her book, Food For Thought: Energizing the Busy Professional, is a guide to making high-quality choices for a long and vibrant life. With a direct focus on changing habits to create a lifestyle of well-being—rather than one of yo-yo dieting, binge eating and sporadic or nonexistent exercise—Jack proposes the consumption of power foods. “Power foods are groups of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds in a variety of colors, tastes and textures that can be combined in endless ways to make complete meals,” explains Jack. “Power foods contain substances that may be elixirs of long life and good health. They give the body sustained energy and benefit the mind with clear thinking.” She also teaches nutrition classes to local retirement community residents and provides nutrition classes for corporate wellness programs and women’s groups. Topics are varied, and include: promoting active lifestyles, healthy eating based on genetic predisposition to chronic illnesses, women’s reproductive health, fertility awareness classes and how to become pregnant naturally, shopping guidelines for the home pantry, sleep, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and inflammation. “Better health comes from eating the right kind of nutrients, getting adequate exercise and sleep, and spending time at leisurely pursuits. For a better tomorrow, live each day in harmony and balance,” enthuses Jack. Stephanie Jack provides consultations and classes by appointment. Re-Thinking the Signs of

Autism by Robert O. Lauver and Jessica Lauver

T

here are certain tell-tale signs of autism that most parents and professionals immediately assume are due to an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); for example: lack of eye contact, staring at spinning objects or light, side viewing and difficulty maintaining visual attention. While these are common signs among those with ASD, these behaviors are often due to correctable vision disorders. Many children with ASD and other developmental delays often have eye coordination and eye movement disorders contributing to their challenges— especially if they’ve had eye surgery. In some cases, the vision disorders are

severe enough to lead a practitioner to misdiagnose a child with ASD. In her book, Autism Solutions: How to Create a Healthy and Meaningful Life for Your Child, Dr. Ricki Robinson, M.D., MPH, states, “Precise, coordinated eye movements are needed for focusing, eye tracking and binocular vision (eyes working together). All are required for maintaining eye contact and spatial awareness, even hand-eye coordination. All are potential concerns for children with ASD. However, if these skills are delayed, they can be learned.” An autism expert, Robinson is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Keck School of Medicine and the co-director

of the Descanso Medical Center for Development and Learning in La Canada, California—a practice devoted to children and families affected by ASD. Most parents are unaware that vision is the dominant sense. This is why when a child has an underlying vision deficit, the proper vision treatment can speed up other therapies, like physical, occupational and even speech. For example: Rebecca, age 8, a second-grader, was non-verbal. She had been receiving occupational therapy for toe walking and speech therapy. After just two weeks of optometric vision therapy, her mom stopped into the office to tell the doctor that she had looked her mom in the eye and said, “I love you”. She had barely spoken prior to this point, and this is something her daughter had never said before. In addition, the toe walking had stopped. A developmental vision evaluation is vital for all children on the spectrum, especially non-verbal children. Neurodevelopmental vision evaluations should be part of every individual’s care who is on the spectrum or even suspected of being on the spectrum. To find a neuro-developmental optometrist near you, visit the Neuro-Optometric Vision Rehabilitation website at nora.cc. Robert O. Lauver, III, OD, FCOVD, F-NORA specializes in comprehensive eye care for infants to seniors, as well as vision therapy, and works with Jessica Lauver, Clinical Director of Vision Therapy, at their practice, Strasburg Family Eyecare, located at 20 Lancaster Ave., in Strasburg. Fresh Looks at Autism Focusing on a Child’s Optimal Potential

chekart /Shutterstock.com

by Linda Sechrist

A

new paradigm shift regarding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) centers on evolving beliefs about the possibilities for those living with autism, as well as the unimagined brilliance they possess and their need for supportive help. Everyone can benefit from the results of hands-on research and experience by parents and caregivers that are finding nontraditional ways to help special needs children deal with issues

related to emotional and cognitive detachment and isolation. Momentum for this major shift in perspective is fueled by young adults that are telling their encouraging stories online and in books such as Carly Fleishman’s Carly’s Voice. Parents of the one in 45 children diagnosed with ASD know that their lifetime commitment requires extraordinary courage, perseverance, patience, determination, emotional strength,

outside-the-box thinking and unconditional love. These parental characteristics are most cited by those that have mastered related developmental disorders, which they now regard as gifts, because they are thriving. Dr. Andrea Libutti, author of Awakened by Autism: Embracing Autism, Self, and Hope for a New World, offers her insights for understanding the multifaceted nature of autism and the need for a personalized plan for healing. Janice Vedrode, a special needs coach, consultant and child advocate in Saginaw, Michigan, founded Spectrum Speaks and writes at JaniceVedrode. com/blog to inform parents about numerous issues regarding ASD. “Because I live in a town that didn’t have an existing support group for parents with ASD children, I took it upon myself to get the ball rolling and advise parents that they need to build a dream team—doctors, therapists, special needs teachers, spiritual community, friends and family—that will make sure their child succeeds and lives a happy and successful life,” says Vedrode. Wanting to help both their own two sons with developmental disabilities and others, Boaz and Minerva Santiago, residents of Pembroke Pines, Florida, became early trail-

Their Picasso Einstein online educational platform at SelfEmploy.org has launched the #JobCreators Bootcamp Training for parents and professionals and the #JobCreators Integration Program that collaborates with organizations, financial institutions and government agencies. “If you focus on pursuing a business for your child for the sake of their independence, you won’t get caught up in only the business and money aspects. Self-employment allows even greatly impaired individuals the maximum opportunity to experience independence, not just in the present, but for the rest of their lives,” explains Boaz. He cites an example of a young boy with an avid interest in folding clothing. His parents learned how to create a meaningful job for him by creating a simple small laundry business from the family garage. Although at the beginning he was only asked to fold clothing (which he already expressed interest in), his father now accompanies him around the neighborhood to pass out business cards and promote his service. Being in business has helped him grow as a person. “Begin by assuming your child is competent and make it possible for them to follow their passion and create a future they can be proud of,” advises Boaz. Shining lights are leading the way. With her father’s help, Carly Fleishman, diagnosed at the age of 2 with nonverbal severe autism, wrote a book by striking one computer key at a time that described living in a mind and body afflicted with this condition. Still nonverbal, she hosts a YouTube radio show on which she interviews celebrities via a device that turns keystrokes into verbal language.

Can Chiropractic help with

Autism Spectrum Disorder? YES. Chiropractic CAN help the many facets of Autism. How? By tending to a “broken” nervous system. Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. When there is interference with those signals, caused by a subluxation or “misalignment,” parts of your body will not get the proper messages and CAN’T function at 100%.

A subluxation in your mid-back and your cranial nerves (brain stem) can affect your focus, attention span AND your gut! FACT: Many people with ASD also have trouble with constipation and leaky gut. CHIROPRACTIC can help by adjusting the spine to a correct position, returning proper nerve flow to the body and to that important piece of the puzzle – the BRAIN. Don’t wait, CALL US TODAY!!

Catching and Treating the Earliest Signs of Autism in Your Toddler by Dr. Mary Barbera

U

p to half of all kids with a diagnosis of autism can recover if they receive early and intensive behavioral intervention starting before the age of 3. The problem is that most kids with early signs of autism need to wait months, and sometimes years, to get a diagnosis and/ or treatment. This delay not only causes parents to worry, but also causes the gaps to widen. For children in a childcare situation, their teacher or guardian might be indicating that something isn’t quite right. He may be falling behind peers, not fitting in, playing alone too much—or worse yet, being aggressive toward others. Many parents might be on a long wait list for an evaluation by a Developmental Pediatrician, but now that wait is producing such stress that they

36

are lying awake most nights worrying. Even if a child does not have any severe symptoms, if anything has caused concern, it is important to trust your gut, stop worrying and take action today by following these three pieces of advice.

1

Compare typical milestones to your child’s abilities and keep track of these, even between wellchild visits. The CDC website (TinyURL.com/ CDCMilestones) has lists of typical milestones at

different ages.

2

Don’t freak out or stick your head in the sand. If your toddler is delayed, talk to your pediatrician or daycare/preschool teacher about getting a free early intervention evaluation and treatment.

3

Start investigating autism and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA),

NALancaster.com / NABerks.com

which is the most proven treatment for autism. Acting today might not stop the worrying, but worrying alone is not helping you or your child at all. Regardless of whether a child is eventually diagnosed with autism or whether he is just going through a difficult patch in his development, these three steps will help parents figure out what to do next, and help children reach their fullest potential. For more information, download the free e-book, Is It Autism, ADHD, or Typical Toddler Tantrums? at MaryBarbera.com/Toddler. Dr. Mary Barbera “fell” into the autism world in 1999 when her first-born son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism one day before he turned 3. In the past two decades, she became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, wrote a best-selling book (The Verbal Behavior Approach), earned a Ph.D., and created online training programs for parents and professionals. Her new mission is to teach parents how to detect and treat the earliest warning signs of autism and turn things around for 2 million children with autism by 2020, through online training and advocacy.

Kerry Magro, with Autism Speaks, a research and advocacy organization, answered the question, “What Happens to Children with Autism When They Become Adults?” in his TEDx talk, one of his many media ventures. Chris Varney, an “I can” advocate for children’s rights, won rave reviews for his TEDx talk, “My Unstoppable Mother Proved the Experts Wrong.” Such powerful stories specifically relate how parents, grandparents and helpful friends forged networks that

freed them and their afflicted children of the inhibiting stigma of autism and enabled them to realize their fullest potential. A bedrock philosophy in supporting ASD and other special needs children is to assume they are competent and learn to see them through God’s lens, rather than the lens of the world. Jessica Lauver, Clinical Director of Vision Therapy Advanced Vision Therapy, LLC essica Lauver is a board-certified vision therapist from the College of Vision Development, where she completed 100 hours of neuro visual rehabilitation courses. At Advanced Vision Therapy, individualized therapy is provided to children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), visual problems with reading and learning and misdiagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Working with Dr. Robert Lauver, who is dual board-certified in Developmental Optometry and Neuro Rehabilitation, and an on-site occupational therapist, the team is able to deliver state-of-the-art care in the treatment of vision, vision-related learning disabilities, Sports Vision Training and neurological vision rehabilitation after trauma or injury, while communicating, every step of the way, with patients and/or their parents. ASD is characterized as a neurodevelopmental disorder that directly effects the neurological process of vision, the dominant sense. Treating visual delays can provide relief from such symptoms as toe walking/heel striking and staring at spinning objects. Vision therapy speeds up the progress of speech, occupational and physical therapies, helping with eye contact and motor development. Using neuroscience tests—like a Visual Evoked Potential to measure just how the brain is processing visual information—is especially helpful for nonverbal patients because the test does not require any verbal feedback. “Our duty is to our patients, young and old, and our pledge is to always work hand in hand with a patient’s physician/therapy team to ensure the best possible outcome,” says Jessica. ELLEN LANGER

How Changing Your Thinking Changes Everything by April Thompson

F

or 40 years, Social Psychologist Ellen Langer has conducted pioneering research on the power of our minds to shape health and well-being. Langer’s work demonstrates that changing what we think and believe can transform not only our experiences, but also our bodies— a once-radical idea now common among neuroscientists. Her unconventional experiments often involve mind tricks: taking elders’ subjective thoughts back 20 years to reverse objective metrics of aging; fostering weight loss in a group of hotel maids by simply suggesting that their jobs qualify as exercise; and even changing blood sugar

levels in diabetics by speeding up or slowing down perceived time during a video game session. Affectionately dubbed the “Mother of Mindfulness”, Langer was the first female professor to earn tenure in Harvard University’s psychology department. A prolific writer and scientist, she has authored more than 200 related articles and 11 books, including Mindfulness; The Power of Mindful Learning; On Becoming an Artist: Reinventing Yourself Through Mindful Creativity; and Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility. Langer lives, paints, works and observes the world

All learning is mindful; the only way to learn is by noticing new things. When we stop observing and get into our heads, wondering if that answer was right or if we responded quickly enough, we exit learning mode and enter mindlessness, where no learning can really take place. Part of what makes travel exciting, for example, is that we are primed to experience new things and pay attention to them, but actually, newness surrounds us at all times, no matter where we are. What makes us mindless is the mistaken notion of already knowing, when everything is always changing.

What techniques, with or without meditation, can we adopt to change our mindset and mental habits to reduce stress and increase health and happiness? Most mindlessness occurs by default, rather than design. If we all realized that through mindfulness we could look better, feel better, be better received and do better things—all claims that are supported by scientific research—it wouldn’t be hard to choose. Meditation is essentially a tool to lead you to the simple act of intentional

noticing, but many routes lead to that destination. One way to learn mindfully is to learn conditionally; to see the world as “it would seem that” and “could be”, which is very different than “it is.” If we recognized that evaluations occur in our heads rather than the external world, much of our stress would dissipate. Negativity and stress are typically a result of mindless ruminations about negative things we think are inevitable. If we simply ask ourselves why the dreaded event might not occur, we’d be less stressed. Next, if we ask ourselves how it may actually be a good thing if it does happen, again stress would diminish.

How do the mental constructs we attach to our experiences affect outcomes of health and well-being? Mental constructs are positions we consider as accepted certainties. When a physician makes a diagnosis, most people take it as a certainty and behave accordingly. Assuming that pain, decline or failure is inevitable can cause an individual to give up hope of complete recovery. But science only suggests probabilities, and if we understand this, we’ll go to work on a solution. We have a tremendous amount of control over our health that goes untapped. Placebos are today’s strongest medications demonstrating this fact.

TAKE A HIKE Escape into Nature with a Day Trip by Marlaina Donato

T

o many, hiking means long-distance treks through forests or backpacking remote terrain. “In reality, it’s more about getting out into green areas close to home,” says Wesley Trimble, of the American Hiking Society. “It’s about immersion in nature.” Day hiking can be easily tailored to personal preferences and interests. “Excellent apps and websites list and describe trails in your area or community. We have a database on our site that’s helpful,” says Trimble (AmericanHiking.org). He’s personally high on old rail lines that have been converted to wide, accessible paths (RailsToTrails.us).

Following a lovely trail, much like inspired cooking, is as intriguing and delightful as we wish it to be. From wildflower paths to wine country trails, the great outdoors invites exploration of woodlands, glens, forests, mountain valleys, coastal areas, bayous, deserts and other terrain. Experienced daytrippers recommend revisiting favorite trails in specific seasons. “I love being in the natural world, be it New Jersey, Florida or Alaska. Every trail offers surprises,” marvels distance hiker Craig Romano (CraigRomano.com). As the author of several day hike guidebooks, he’s seen firsthand how, “Every part of the country offers different perspectives and forms of beauty. The greatest biological diversity in our country is found in the Great Smoky Mountains, where the rhododendrons are breathtaking in spring.” The world’s largest mapped cave system is in Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park. Hiking to observe other subterranean wonders in Indiana or Virginia’s Natural Bridge Caverns is no less exhilarating than walking Alabama’s covered bridge trail or painter Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch country, in New Mexico. The Appalachian Trail, running between Maine and Georgia, attracts thousands of adventurous long-distance trekkers, but such trails also offer sections ideal for day hikes. Geomagnetic points in Arizona’s vortex region or America’s Stonehenge, in New Hampshire, afford unusual destinations. The wonders of California’s Sonoma County include Planet Walk, a scale model path that illustrates our solar system. what they find, although quartz diamond sites (semiprecious stones less hard than diamonds) can be accessed at other U.S. locales. Coastal walks lead to discovering sea glass and shells. Arboretums in urban areas offer trails flush with local flora. Joining or starting a hiking club based on common interests is one way to go. “One of our guidebook series encourages outdoor enthusiasts to explore the natural world in their immediate backyards. This approach especially appeals to families, first-time trail users and athletes looking for a quick nature fix after work,” offers Helen Cherullo, publisher of Mountaineers Books (MountaineersBooks.org), a nonprofit committed to conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Wherever we venture, take nothing but pictures and leave nature untouched. Cherullo reminds us, “Connecting people to treasured natural landscapes leads to active engagement to preserve these places for future generations. n estimated 18 million people in the U.S. suffer from some form of sleep apnea. From the Greek expression for “want of breath,” sleep apnea causes cessation of breathing during the night. Bouts usually last from 10 to 30 seconds and can occur from just a few times to several hundred. The main cause is the throat muscles becoming too relaxed during sleep and constricting the airway. Two out of four people with the condition do not even realize they are

Vitamins D and C Almost everyone is deficient in vitamin D, even many in sunny regions, reports Dr. Joseph Mercola in his report, The Amazing Wonder Nutrient. Wisely managed sun exposure supplies vitamin D—no more than 20 minutes a day, 10 minutes on each side—without suntan lotion. Alternatively, a high-dose of a quality vitamin D supplement measuring 5,000 international units is adequate, but always take it along with vitamin K2, which helps the body process calcium properly to avoid overdose problems.

Sleep on Either Side Lying on the back encourages throat muscles to close up and the tongue to fall toward the back of the throat. Shifting onto one side reduces this discomfort and potential apnea episodes. Using one pillow beneath the head allows the neck to rest at a more natural angle, rather than pushing the chin toward the chest, which restricts the airway.

Our body does not store vitamin C, so we need at least 2,000 milligrams daily to maintain good health. A study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine found that vitamin C can reduce damage caused by sleep apnea. High-content foods include bell peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwi fruit, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peas and papayas.

Magnesium, the Master Mineral From 70 to 80 percent of mankind is deficient in magnesium, which has been connected with prevention of degenerative diseases and mental health and is often the missing mineral in an individual’s wellness equation, according to Enviromedica’s Ancient Minerals. It also regulates muscle function, including those in the upper throat involved with apnea. Organic foods and farmers’ market offerings may have higher levels of magnesium, especially those packed with green chlorophyll. Liquid chlorophyll is available in most health stores. Start by drinking one glass (250 milliliters) per day for a week, and then take two tablespoons daily. Spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, yogurt, kefir, almonds, black beans, avocados, figs, bananas and dark chocolate (avoid brands with white sugar) are good sources.

Helpful Natural Medicines n Just before bedtime, consume one teaspoon of olive oil (or organic honey) combined with three drops of lavender essential oil. n Supplement with serotonin precursor 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), which complements magnesium. n One of the best pure sources of omega-3—a top remedy for sleep apnea by protecting cells from stress— is krill oil (Alternative Medicine Review). Sleep apnea causes long-term oxidative stress and puts severe demands on the body, which is thought to deplete omega-3 levels. The Proper Pillow by Randy Kambic

T

he right natural pillow is a key component to restful sleep. In fact, pillow comfort and support are as critical to good sleep as the proper mattress. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) (SleepFoundation.org), 91 percent of Americans say that a good pillow is key to their sleep quality. Investing in a high-quality, supportive pillow can be transformative, both personally and professionally. The RAND Corporation calculates that poor sleep among U.S. workers annually costs the U.S. economy some $411 billion. Replace old, worn-out pillows. Pillows can harbor dust mites and their excrement, dead skin cells and bacteria that can exacerbate allergy symptoms. If a pillow is clumping, losing support or yellowing, replace it, says Michelle Fishberg, co-founder of sleep wellness company Slumbr (Slumbr.com). “Quality, properly sourced, down and feather pillows can be comfortable for those that like classic, soft pillows. Buckwheat and natural latex pillows each have unique qualities promoting better sleep. Buckwheat is therapeutic for back pain, all-natural and hypoallergenic, and reduces snoring for some,” advises Fishberg.

Pillow care. The NSF suggests using pillow as well as mattress protectors; PureCare mattress (PureCare.com) is their official source including a range of down pillows and its MiteTight protector. Organic cotton covers are kind to people and the planet. Slumbr.com likewise advises using a protective cover to extend pillow life. Don’t dry clean pillows, because chemicals and heat can do damage. A down pillow can be washed, but it’s best to have it professionally cleaned by a down specialist every three to four years. Or wash them at home no more than twice a year on the delicate cycle, alone in a large or commercial washing machine, to avoid breaking down the down’s natural oils and structure. Latex pillows can be occasionally hand-washed with mild detergent and air-dried flat. Don’t wash buckwheat pillows—if the hulls get wet, pour them into a fine mesh bag and air-dry them in the sun.

Sleep More Soundly

with an Adjustable Bed Base by Sheila Julson

F

or some people, the quest for a good night’s sleep can be never-ending. While there are plenty of tips and information available about preparing the body for sleep by drinking a cup of calming tea or keeping electronic devices out of the bedroom, the solution to restful sleep could be as simple as adjusting one’s bed to fit the body. Ben McClure, owner of Gardner’s Mattress & More, says that an adjustable bed base that allows the head or legs to be elevated to varying degrees can help with snoring, acid reflux, sleep apnea, lower back pain and more. Adjustable bed bases were at one time commonly associated just with hospital beds or for the elderly or infirmed, but anybody can use an adjustable bed base to sleep better, sleep deeper, fall asleep more quickly and wake up feeling rejuvenated. “The position that you sleep in can really make a difference,” McClure says. “Most of us sleep in a horizontal position and sleep on our backs or on our stomachs, and our bodies are constantly adjusting to that position. We might develop back pain because our mattresses are sagging and our bodies are collapsing into that sag. Or side sleepers, for example, have some pressure on their hips because the mattress is too hard or too firm. If somebody has circulation trouble, or they snore or they have acid reflux, adjustable bed bases are designed to solve those sleep issues.” Those with acid reflux may find relief with an adjustable bed base because, with one push of a button, the head is elevated and the torso is no longer in a flat position, so fluid can’t flow uphill into the esophagus. Those with snoring issues can use an adjustable bed base to slightly elevate the head in order to breathe easier. An adjustable bed base can also relieve pressure in the lower body, specifically in the arch of the back. “When the 44

legs are in a horizontal position, there’s tension in the base of the spine. The muscles attached to the base of the spine are working harder to support the spine in a flat position,” McClure explains. “When you bring your knees up, it immediately takes the pressure off those muscles. The vertebrae open up a bit in the base of the spine and those nerves aren’t pinched, and the circulation improves in the lower half of the body.” Some doctors recommend putting pillows beneath the knees in order to elevate the legs and loosen the tension at the base of the spine. “That’s exactly what an adjustable bed does, but the challenge with pillows is that you’re going to flip and flop during the night and the pillows will move around and fall off the bed, waking you up. An adjustable bed base won’t move unless you push the button on the control,” McClure notes. An adjustable bed base is essentially a movable box spring, controlled with the push of a button that moves the head and the legs oppositely. McClure says that since Gardner’s began carrying adjustable bed bases in 2001, the technology has greatly improved. The motors are whisperquiet, and the bases are stylish and fit room décor. Some adjustable bed bases even have vibration massage features and USB charging ports. Most mattresses in Gardner’s showroom, including the natural mattresses, can be used with an adjustable bed base, and they can be used with any bedding. “The queen and king sizes are true to standard bedding. Also, if someone has a nice sleigh bed or poster bed frame they really like, an adjustable bed base works with those bed frames, too,” McClure says.

Anybody can use an adjustable bed base to sleep better, sleep deeper, fall asleep more quickly and wake up feeling rejuvenated. Gardner’s knowledgeable staff walks customers through not just choosing the adjustable bed base that’s right for them, but also helping people choose the best mattress for comfort and sleep needs. The Try Before You Buy Dream Room allows people to experience the benefits of an adjustable bed base in a non-showroom environment, by appointment. Gardner’s Mattress & More is located at 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster (main location and premium showroom). Factory Direct Mattress and Sofas by Gardner’s has value offerings and is located at 2495 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. For more information, visit GardnersMattressAndMore.com.
