Foreword
Welcome to the 31st annual Western Visions®. Throughout the ten days of programs and events, beginning with the emerald anniversary of the Jewelry and Artisan Luncheon and ending with the Farewell to Fall Arts Brunch, you will have the chance to experience superlative wildlife art, engage with extraordinary contemporary artists, and support the incomparable National Museum of Wildlife Art of the United States. The paintings, prints, sculptures, and sketches featured in our annual Show & Sale reflect the pinnacle of wildlife and landscape art. The passion our participating artists feel for the Museum and our mission to “enrich and inspire appreciation and knowledge of humanity’s relationship with nature” is evident in the beautiful works of art that will be on sale this year. Our gratitude for their work is boundless. This year we return to the popular Fixed Price/Random Draw auction. Winning names for the sketch portion of the show will be drawn on Thursday night, during the festive Artist Party. Names for the world class painting and sculpture that make up the main portion of the Show & Sale will be drawn on Friday evening.
Jeff Lestitian, Programs & Events Assistant and Amy Goicoechea, Director of Programs & Events

John Nieto Memorial
Introduction
Where does the time go? It is not a very original question but one we find ourselves asking more and more. For 31 years now we have gathered to celebrate, collect and learn at the Western Visions Show and Sale. We come to support the National Museum of Wildlife Art but also to support one another – artists, patrons, dealers and educators. We look at art, we share ideas and opinions and we commune over our commonalities and our differences. The 20th anniversary of our Jewelry and Artisan Luncheon is a cause for celebration. The event has proven to be a much anticipated gathering enjoyed by a wonderful group of friends and patrons. The Western Visions Show and Sale is the cornerstone of the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival and over the years it has seen many changes. We have tried varied approaches regarding sales technique, exhibition design and display, educational components and artist selection. This year we move from electronic bidding to the traditional intent to purchase. As with any change there will be people happy and people disappointed. The random nature of the draw means that you might not win the piece you want but hopefully there will be enough pieces that catch your eye that you will not leave empty handed!
John Nieto, Taos Buffalo
This time of year is one of our favorites. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. We love to see the art and the breadth and depth of the show pieces. We enjoy the events. We celebrate our successes. We challenge ourselves to see things from diverse perspectives. It is our pleasure to be a part of Western Visions. We are committed to its success as an exemplary art exhibition and sale and as the museum’s primary fundraiser.
“We lost a pinnacle of the wildlife and western art world with the passing of John Nieto. However, his spirit lives on in the artwork he shared with the world during his long and fruitful life.”
This year we saw the loss of cherished Western Visions participant and world-renowned artist John Nieto. Nieto’s works communicate a powerful connection to the people, traditions, and wildlife that made up a critical part of his life. The Museum is proud to hold nine works by Nieto, including paintings, sketches, and even a rare sculpture. His work has been a part of the collection for twenty-five of the Museum’s thirty-one years. His paintings, in particular, engage visitors with their powerful images, bold colors, and abstract passages. Adam Harris, Joffa Kerr Chief Curator of Art, said, “We lost a pinnacle of the wildlife and western art world with the passing of John Nieto. However, his spirit lives on in the artwork he shared with the world during his long and fruitful life.” Nieto will be greatly missed not only by members of the Museum community, but also by the art world in general.

The National Museum of Wildlife Art started out as a dream of a handful of people who were hoping to bring wildlife art into the public’s recognition of fine art. Paintings and sculpture of North American Big Game animals gave way to wildlife art of the United States and the influences of European masters. We now are not only the National Museum of Wildlife Art of the United States, we are the repository of the finest and most comprehensive collection of wildlife art in the world. We are also setting an example and building a vision of how this work contributes to our knowledge and awareness of wildlife, it’s place in our world today and the care and conservation of the earth on which it lives. We are proud of the legacy the museum has built. We are honored to be a part of something so wonderful. We happily welcome you to the 31st annual Westerns Vision Show and Sale. We hope that it is a weekend of fun, wonder and communion with art, nature and friends! Kavar Kerr Sue Simpson Gallagher Co-chairs

National Museum of Wildlife Art Trustees vote for the Purchase Award and the winning art is accessioned into the acclaimed permanent collection. 2017 Trustee Purchase Award recipient: Kathryn Mapes Turner
The 2018 Western Visions® Show & Sale opens Friday, September 7 at 3 p.m. at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Each person purchasing a ticket for the sale will receive a ballot book containing one ballot for each work in the exhibit. Each ballot book will have a unique number registered solely to the purchaser. Purchasers have until 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 13 for sketches and 7 p.m. on Friday, September 14 for paintings and sculptures to place their signed and numbered ballot into the boxes by the art they wish to purchase. At 8 p.m. on the 13th and 7 p.m. on the 14th, a salesperson will draw three names and post them on a large card near each work. The printed art number must match the number of the art, and the name on the ballot must match the name registered to that ballot book number. The person whose name is posted first will have 30 minutes to decline the purchase. If the first individual declines the work, the second name becomes eligible to purchase the art for the next 20 minutes. Finally, when those 20 minutes expire, the third name also becomes eligible to purchase the art for the next 10 minutes. For sculpture and prints with multiple castings and editions available, the first name drawn will receive the work on display. Additional names will be drawn for remaining editions available. Once the sale is confirmed, the seller will write SOLD on the large card.
Payment 1. All art purchases require payment in full the night of the sale. 2. Patrons are encouraged to remain at the Museum. until all sales are final. Unsold works will be available for purchase on Saturday, September 15 at 9 a.m. 3. Buyers choosing to pay by credit card will incur a 3% fee on total invoice. 4. State and local sales tax will be added to the purchase price.
The Robert Kuhn Award is named for a great friend of the Museum, the late Bob Kuhn. This award is given to the best submission in the category of artists’ sketches as determined by a panel of judges.
5. The Western Visions® Show & Sale will remain on exhibit through Sunday, October 7, 2018. Artwork will be released after October 8. Purchasers must make arrangements for either pick-up or shipping prior to that date.
