uttridge Ltd is a leading UK manufacturer of bulk materials handling equipment, with a history of supplying efficient and reliable solutions that extends over five decades. Headquartered in Spalding, Lincolnshire, in a purpose built facility that incorporates a 43000ft2 state-of-the-art manufacturing workshop, the company designs and manufactures well-engineered, reliable handling solutions for a growing global customer base. Control over every aspect of each project underpins the company’s established reputation for excellence and makes Guttridge a strong and trusted partner for materials handling projects, big and small, from grain and animal feeds, through to biomass and recycling/waste streams.

A company with agricultural roots Guttridge is a company growing from strong agricultural roots in the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside. Founded in 1962 by the late Dr. David Guttridge, it began by manufacturing mobile animal feed mills, a business that grew rapidly over the subsequent decade. In the mid 1970s, the economics of mobile feed milling were undermined by the Common Agricultural Policy and Guttridge responded by developing a straw processing plant and concentrating more intensively on the design and manufacture of bulk materials handling machinery. In 1975, a new range of bucket elevators, screw conveyors and dischargers was launched, products that have been refined over decades by numerous engineers, to form the foundation of the current company product range.

Company Profile

Modernisation Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Guttridge worked hard to establish its place at the forefront of the UK bulk materials handling industry. Embracing and exploiting the potential benefits of advances in computing power, the company invested in computer numerical control (CNC) machines and computer aided design (CAD) systems, which together enhanced the company’s ability to efficiently make equipment to exacting tolerances, at competitive cost. In 1994, a subcontract sheet metal work service was launched, the forerunner of today’s Laserfab, to maximise application of the new laser cutter, which proved similarly critical for efficient manufacture. Today, a continued strategy of investment and improvement allows Guttridge to be both responsive and cost-efficient. The very latest 3D design systems in combination with state-of-theart manufacturing facilities, enable the design and manufacture of elevators, conveyors, dischargers, hoppers, bins and all the associated ancillary equipment needed to engineer robust, customised, cost-effective handling systems, for even the most demanding applications. Individual machines for local farmers through to integrated systems for grain storage cooperatives and household names such as Lafarge cement and Wagg’s pet food all benefit from the same attention to detail.

Introducing the Guttridge range Guttridge designs and builds conveying and elevating equipment for a truly diverse range of materials, innovating from the following core ranges for animal feed and grain applications: • Carier range Tried and trusted for grain handling for many decades, the Carier range is especially suitable for light industrial and harvest duty grain storage applications. As the only supplier of genuine Carier spares, and with extensive experience of these machines, Guttridge is also the ‘go to’ partner for long term maintenance and the best operating advice.

Guttridge continues to innovate to maintain and extend its position within the market. Recent collaboration with a specialist university department has developed the company’s knowledge in the science of materials and their flow properties. Guttridge now run analytical tests to quantify the flow characteristics of novel and/or tricky to handle powders such as food ingredients and specialist chemicals. These provide the raw data they need to evaluate and optimise right first time engineering designs for exacting applications. For larger scale pellets, grains and flakes, Guttridge continues to advance the science applied in machinery design, in collaboration with academic partners. In 2013, Guttridge Ltd was chosen to work alongside main contractor Chief Industries UK Ltd, a subsidiary of Chief industries, (Nebraska, USA), to supply and install new plant at Kneesall Lodge Farm, part of the Thoresby Farming Estate. Chief supplied a 75t/h dryer and 100t/h aspirator while Guttridge manufactured a range of Carier 100t/h conveyors and elevators. Commenting on his decision to source all the materials handling equipment from Guttridge, Mark Temple said, “This installation was particularly environmentally sensitive and we had to fulfil certain criteria with respect to noise emissions. We were confident that the Carier range of equipment would fulfil our requirements and complement our own high standards.” Within the specified plant, material is fed into one of two wet grain pits. Chain and flight conveyors take grain from these pits at a rate of 100tph, delivering it onto an inclined conveyor that feeds the aspirator pre-cleaner which removes dust, chaff, husks, awns and other unwanted material. Vertical transport via belt and bucket elevators takes the grain through a diverter valve and into the dryer with any overflow returned to the wet grain pit by a horizontal conveyor. Dry grain is transported on a further series of inclined chain and flight conveyors and lifted with a second bucket and belt elevator to reach its final destination – a 6000te grain store. The Carier equipment, which is all controlled via a PLC system installed by Chief, was successfully installed and commissioned and is proving both cost-effective and efficient.

Centralised grain storage at Woldgrain

Working with Guttridge: Case study – Woldgrain Storage/ GAME Engineering Ltd Woldgrain Storage Ltd, based at Hemswell Airfield in Lincolnshire, was established in 1980 to store grain on behalf of its members. As a farmers' cooperative it works on a non-profit basis and the storage space is owned by the membership of shareholders. A board of eight farmer members oversee the store management and the primary objective of the business is to provide a cost effective storage option for farmers. Following expansion over 25 years to a capacity of 30,000 tonnes of ventilated storage, Woldgrain Storage embarked on a major expansion programme in 2010 to further increase capacity, ultimately to 57,000 tonnes, supported by a grant from the Rural Development Programme for England. Guttridge supplied materials handling equipment to GAME Engineering Ltd who was awarded the contract to design, supply and install all the handling and processing systems for Phase I of this project, for Clugston Construction Ltd. Working to a tight time scale of just three months, Guttridge supplied a bespoke solution of thirteen chain and flight conveyors in three widths, ranging from 7 - 95 metres in overall length, and two 300mm wide soft flight chain conveyors, all with a rated capacity of 250tph. Seven HiLoad belt and bucket elevators ranging from 12 - 24 metres in length were also delivered. Screw feeders and eighteen associated inline electro-pneumatic slides to fit the chain conveyors completed the order. Tony Kirk, Business Development Director, GAME Engineering Ltd, commented, “For many years GAME Engineering Ltd has sourced a large quantity of their materials handling equipment from Guttridge, for use in projects in not only the grain handling sector but animal feed, pet food production plants and the waste recycling industry. When we were approached by the principle contractor in charge of this major expansion for WoldGrain Storage to put together the process scheme, it only seemed natural to use Guttridge equipment. Not only because they are a local company but also because of their commitment to delivering quality machines on time and on budget. Both of which they achieved.”

Company Profile Students from Boston Grammar School worked with Guttridge on an EES project to investigate the properties of grain and seeds

Working with Guttridge: Boston Grammar School Guttridge and Boston Grammar School have been collaborating to offer students the opportunity to take part in the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) – an EDT programme which links engineering companies with students from local schools. The scheme enables students to work on live engineering projects relevant to the company, developing skills that will stand them in good stead for university and future employment. Recently, four students from the Grammar School designed and constructed a unique device that could measure the wall friction angle of a variety of material for Guttridge, ranging from grain to rice and bird seed, against mild steel, stainless steel, galvanised steel and plastic. Wall friction angle is a parameter used to quantify the ease with which material flows across a specific material. The 6-month project yielded useful and relevant information and was a very worthwhile experience for all involved.
