Peter was taken on as an apprentice welder for three years at J Thackray & son and then went on to Fred Scaling for a further two years.

trailers at a total of £1050.00 and he was up to his limit with his overdraft but still required a further £200.00 for some wheels for the trailer. Peter went to his bank manager to ask for a loan to cover the cost of the wheels. The bank managers comment was “Can you sell the trailers without the wheels” and this was the end of the relationship with that bank manager. Peter told the story to a different bank manager who gave him a £1000.00 overdraft, and Peter felt like a millionaire at the time. Still selling through Russellʼs and also now Ralph Yates at Malton plus other local dealers, Peter was now selling a lot more trailers direct to customers. At this stage the trailers were mainly kerowin hard wood, drop sided and lots of silage trailers.
Hard work Through sheer hard work the company was building and going well at Farndale. The Landlord came by one day and said “have you got planning permission” for a shed that had been put up, Peter replied “ whatʼs that?” Peter then decided to look for a premises that he could buy otherwise, that could have been the end of “Easterby Trailers.” Peterʼs cousin came over one day and said there an old station yard for sale at Burton Agnes near Driffield with a house that would just do you. So after a load of taking to the bank manager in 1979. Burton Agnes was purchases and Easterby Trailers moved over to East Yorkshire. A new purpose

built shed was erected creating a new workshop. Easterby Trailers from there went from strength to strength and grew out of that yard and a new site was found at Cottam in 1994. Cottam Grange was an old farm stead, with three times more shed space, which would create the idea workshop space. So yet another trip to the bank manager with more expansion plans.

Family business Today, and still situated at Cottam Grange, Cottam, Driffield amidst the rolling farmland of East Yorkshire Wolds. Easterby Trailers Limited is run by a small workforce team. Peterʼs wife, Liz and Sarah run the office on a day to day basis. Peterʼs eldest son Dean has followed in his fathersʼ foots steps and works with Peter, along with another eight members of staff in the work shop. Younger son Harry is still in full time education and also hopes to join the family business when old enough. “Built to perfection and built to last” was the motto the company adopted, when it started and one which it has continued to be observe through its progressive expansion. Popular The most popular trailer is the 12/14 tonne Monocoque Trailer. Larger trailers are all fitted with commercial axles and parabolic tandems. A lot of trailers go out on the larger floatation tyres which are ideal for the wetter seasons. Nearly 40% of the larger trailers are fitted with air & hydraulic brakes. All our trailers can be fitted with a hydraulic back door or sprung drawbar. Easterby Trailers aims to build a trailer to the customerʼs needs. As trailer specification change, we have update our trailers, LED lights are now fitted and easy sheets are also fitted on request. Easterby Trailers holds an annual open day each
year on the first Wednesday in December. The workshop doors are open to customers and the pubic to come and see our trailers on display and join with us for some refreshments. Easterby Trailers has also attended the LAMMA show ever since it started at the Newark Showground. This yearʼs show in January was a very cold two days, Despite the weather, the visitor numbers were still up and the show was very busy over the two day event. The LAMMA show is a vital show to attend for us and brings us a lot of trade for the coming harvest period. We deal direct to our customers and only have one main dealer these days; this is G & J Peck. Their main depot is at Spalding and they cover a large area of the south east.

Also some of our customers are not in the farming industry. The past few years have seen an increase in the horse muck trailers we make. This has led to Petersʼ other main passion, away from trailers, which is his horse stud business. Peter has three brood mares, which have bred some outstanding horses over the pass years at Cottam Grange. Naming all of the horses he has breed with a prefix of “Cottam”. Peter has had two of his own bred horses win at local race courses, Cottam Grange and Cottam Donny. Another old favourite who is now enjoying retirement

at Cottam Grange is Alpine Hideaway, who was purchased as a three year old and won many races and has given Peter and Liz some most enjoyable days out at the races.
