Nestled between the walls of Francesco di Giorgio’s 15th-century stables built for Duke Federico da Montefeltro, Giancarlo De Carlo’s steel super structure has remained still and silent, waiting to support a variety of uses for the Comune di Urbino. Finished in 2007, the three-level structure and the light wells (patios) carved from the interior space stand in contrast to, and detached from, the massive brick wall that is all that remains of Francesco di Giorgio’s original construction. Designed as a flexible armature to support several functions, including Library, Exposition Space, Café/bar, and Urban/Territorial Center, the structure occupies three levels while preserving the expansive sense of space within this 135-meter-long building. How to insert and define a set of discrete functions while preserving the majesty and mystery of this uniquely-proportioned volume presents a design challenge of a high order.
