It takes time to make a good gumbo. The longer you let it simmer, the deeper and more developed the flavor So, too, the gumbo of cultures in Natchitoches - Louisiana's Oldest City, took time to simmer and evolve into the unique body of people who call this region home Established in 1714 and positioned at the edge of two colonial empires in the New World, Natchitoches and the Cane River region served as a cultural crossroads for much of its early years. It became a place where American Indians, French, Spanish, African, and later AngloAmericans came together to create a way of life dependent on the land, the river, and each other.

Our stories are brimming with the contrasts that comprise our nation's history conquest and colonialism, militarism and peace, wealth and poverty, slavery, and freedom Today, colonial forts like Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site and Los Adaes State Historic Site depict life on these early outposts Downriver the Cane River National Heritage Trail, a Louisiana Scenic Byway, follows the winding river roads lined with majestic oak trees and pecan orchards that provide glimpses into the past. Here one can find stately creole architecture mixed in with the traces of a thriving agricultural industry dominated by cotton, cattle, and pecans.

At the Cane River Creole National Historical Park, generations of the same families of owners and

workers, enslaved and tenant, lived on these lands for over 200 years The park tells their stories and preserves Oakland and Magnolia Plantations, two of the most intact Creole cotton plantations in the United States

A National Historic Landmark, Melrose Plantation contains nine historic buildings, including the African House, which houses a collection by worldfamous African American folk artist Clementine Hunter On the Isle Brevelle Trail, St Augustine Catholic Church is the spiritual center and heart of the Cane River Creole community, where the Creole traditions and practices extend beyond attending church services on Sunday to include fairs, trail rides, and candlelight vigils.

For over 300 years Natchitoches has been the destination of travelers, many of whom still find their way to this historic town that is known for its famous meat pie, Christmas Festival, Cane River, and as the film location of Steel Magnolias Natchitoches becomes the “City of Lights” from mid-November to January 6 each year during the Natchitoches Christmas season, now approaching its 100th anniversary Throughout the year we celebrate music, food, and culture with annual events such as Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival, Melrose Arts & Crafts Festival, Zydeco Festival, Jazz & R&B Festival, and the Classic Car Show

Visitors and locals experience “Where History Lives” right in our backyard. They follow the trails in Kisatchie National Forest and through the Cane River National Heritage Area to find centuries of history, culture, and natural landscapes that are ready to be explored by foot, car, or boat. The city of Natchitoches sits within the Cane River National Heritage Area, a region known for Creole

Music echoes throughout the courtyard of the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Building at Northwestern State University (NSU) and the quad outside of the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA), where students are pursuing their dreams. Brightly colored canvases line the windows of historic Front Street, where galleries and shops display local artists' original works. Live music can be found at several local restaurants most weekends Costumed folk dancers preserve tradition and delight crowds at seasonal festivals. Creative communities throughout Natchitoches share a passion for the rich history and natural beauty that inspires the creative mind Art and the celebration of artists are interwoven into every aspect of life in Natchitoches.

The orchestra program at NSU Middle Lab School begins cultivating an appreciation of musical ability in students at a young age. Known for its prestigious talent, these young performers have famously played at both Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney World At Natchitoches Central, students can become members of another award-winning orchestra, and Louisiana School students regularly qualify for all-state honor choirs and orchestra participation. College students perform in the “best sounding band in the land”, the Spirit of Northwestern, and the famous NSU Symphony Orchestra, preparing not only for careers in the arts, but also for leadership roles in any field

Students in the Spirit of Northwestern band frequently participate in campus leadership and traditionally have the highest grade point averages among campus organizations

NSU's CAPA and LSMSA act as a workforce pipeline generating internationally skilled creative talent, and are key contributors to the social capital of the Natchitoches community. Faculty and students produce several live performances, multimedia productions, and gallery events throughout the year, including NSU's acclaimed annual Christmas Gala A creative and performing arts education prepares students for careers in the arts as well as production, management, education, and any other fields requiring creativity and rigorous work habits.

Ask anyone why they love Louisiana, and you might hear “The food!” One prominent aspect of Louisiana culture is the unique food prepared by generations of families, cooks, and chefs The delicious fare ranges from boudin to beignets, po’boys to pralines, and crawfish étouffée to king cakes. Louisianians take their food culture seriously, and this pride is evident to every tourist who visits our state In 2022, culinary and dining experiences were ranked second in the top three leisure activities for Louisiana domestic travelers. Louisiana's 42 6 million domestic and international visitors brought $17 1 billion in spending during 2022, and would buy 106 pounds of crawfish for each Louisiana visitor.

Clearly, our food culture benefits our state by infusing tourism dollars. As hospitality and culinary educators, faculty recognize the importance of teaching Northwestern State University (NSU) Hospitality Management students about our unique food culture and how it draws tourists to our state, especially to Natchitoches.

In Natchitoches, visitors experience exceptional local cuisine worth writing home about – depths and flavor unique to the local culture. The food can only be rivaled by the dining experience in local Natchitoches restaurants Many local restaurants add live music to the menu on week-

ends, making both taste buds and feet dance! Cocktail connoisseurs enjoy a wide range of libations ranging from local and state-side microbrews and champagne on tap to our famous frozen daiquiris Foodies can enjoy waterfront dining at restaurants overlooking Cane River or Sibley Lake (shown above), and outdoor boating enthusiasts can even call in their favorite dishes to go and have it delivered right to their boat downriver at Shell Beach!

Natchitoches is an agriculturally diverse parish, producing almost every crop that can be grown in Louisiana. In 2022, the estimated value of agriculture in the parish was over $169 million, with forestry, cattle & calves, poultry, corn, and soybeans contributing over 70% of the total value. Additional commercial crops include rice, grain sorghum, and wheat. Our parish is home to some of the state’s leading cattle producers, as well as smaller operations that include goats, sheep, and pigs. The Natchitoches Pilgrims facility is one of the world's largest poultry producers. Our parish is also a key contributor to the largest agricultural commodity in the state: forestry. We are home to several major players within the global forestry industry, including Weyerhaeuser, International Paper, and RoyOMartin.

Agricultural activity in the parish tends to follow major waterways like the Red River and Cane River Lake. Row crop producers rely heavily on these waterways for crop irrigation. The droughts of 2022 and 2023 have highlighted the importance of irrigation, with many non-irrigated fields being total losses for producers, but critical and everevolving agricultural technology provides better information than ever before to assist producers in their production. These advancements include everything from GPS-driven equipment, yield monitoring, and variable rate inputs to scouting and spraying crops with drones. Using information gathered from past harvests and sampling, producers are able to identify problem areas within fields and determine the best management options for those areas

The LSU AgCenter is committed to agricultural research across the state that focuses on commodities and management practices. This information is distributed through local offices in each parish. In Natchitoches, variety trials of row crops show how new varieties of crops perform compared to other varieties, helping to make planting decisions for following years. 4-H is another service provided by the local LSU AgCenter. Natchitoches Parish has over 1,000 youth 4-H members who participate in community service projects, state contests, and attend many events across the state and nation. Natchitoches Parish Meat Judging won state and participated in the American Royal National Meats in 2023. A recent economic impact study revealed that NSU contributes $428.2 million to its 10-parish
