PLAN TO PARTICIPATE IN FALL SWEEP - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4

The Parks & Recreation and Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful (KNBB) Committees are excited to invite the entire community to participate in the 5th Annual Fall Sweep for the City of Nassau Bay on Saturday, November 4th, from 8:30 AM to 12 PM. The event has two projects in mind. The first project is to paint house numbers on curbs to support the Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful initiative. The second project involves planting fall flowers at various gardens around the City. The plan is to assist the Nassau Bay Garden Club in refreshing the esplanades on Nassau Bay Drive, Point Lookout Drive, and Upper Bay Boulevard, along with the Swan Lagoon Park, Howard Ward Park, and Founder's Park flower beds with fall flowers. Volunteers can also sign up to help clean the Peninsula, and are advised to bring gloves and work shoes/boots. There will be pizza and popcorn available for volunteers, and a bounce house for kids. Students and all citizens are welcome to volunteer and receive service hours. If you would like to volunteer, please email Michelle.Weller@nassaubay.com.

SALUTE TO NASSAU BAY VETERANS

The City of Nassau Bay expresses its eternal gratitude to all the men and women who have served and fought for our country. On this Veterans Day, we extend our warm wishes for a happy, safe, and peaceful day to you and your families. We would like to give a special appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Nassau Bay's Veterans: Councilmember Chase Waterwall, and City staff Paul Lopez, Chani Honeycutt, Moses Velasco, Jerel Crowder, Dusty Wortman, and James Green. We are so thankful for each and every one of you and your selfless service to our country! City Hall will be closed on Thursday, November 9 at 11:30 AM through Friday, November 10 in honor of Veteran’s Day.

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION

The Nassau Bay Garden Club is celebrating Arbor Day on Friday, November 3, with a program at the David Braun Reflection Garden at 9:30 AM. This year, the club will honor the city for its efforts in celebrating and planting Moon Trees. In February 2023, four Moon Trees were planted in the city, namely, two at Reflection Garden and two more at City Hall. The history behind the Moon Trees goes back to Apollo 14, the NASA Mission launched on January 31, 1971. During the mission, Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell became the fifth and sixth men to walk on the Moon, while Astronaut Stuart Roosa orbited above. On his command module, Roosa carried hundreds of seeds that would eventually become Moon Trees. Arbor Day is a celebration of planting and nurturing trees, and it looks forward with promise for a future filled with trees. It celebrates all the ways trees enrich our lives and stabilize our environment. "Arbor Day is the celebration of a tree's value," said Cathy Johnson, club event chair. The club has celebrated Arbor Day for 59 years, and the community is invited to join in the ceremony. Mayor Phil Johnson will present a proclamation naming November 4 as Arbor Day in the City of Nassau Bay. The club members plan to participate in the Fall Sweep on Saturday, November 4, hosted by the Parks and Recreation Committee and Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful (KNBB) Committee from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers are encouraged to participate. Those who wish to help out with the organization’s gardens on that day can contact Diana Clark at 281-5073387. To encourage citizens of Nassau Bay with schedule conflicts for the morning to attend a meeting, the November 14 chapter meeting will be held in the evening. Stacey Phillips, a Galveston County Master Gardener and owner of Sunshine Designs landscaping, will discuss planting and growing perennials.

STORM WATER POLLUTION PREVENTION Stormwater pollution is a serious concern for the City of Nassau Bay. The storm drain system was designed to prevent flooding by carrying excess rainwater from city streets. However, the stormwater released into Clear Creek (Galveston Bay) is untreated as the system doesn't contain any filters.

NARCAN SUPPLY FOR NBPD

To ensure proper drainage, Public Works crews clear the stormwater catch basins of debris during and after rain events. Storm Water decals are placed on the catch basins, and more new inlets will be marked by the crews. Everyone can help protect Galveston Bay by avoiding pouring pollutants into the storm drains. Here are some tips to prevent stormwater pollution: - Don't pour hazardous waste materials down the drain, onto sidewalks, or into catch basins. - Use pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers according to their label instructions. Don't apply them before rain, and avoid overwatering your plants or lawn. - When walking your pets, pick up their waste and dispose of it in a trashcan. - Don't put motor oil in the trash or pour it on the ground or down a storm drain. If you need more information on stormwater pollution prevention or want to report illegal dumping, call the City of Nassau Bay Public Works Department at 281-333-2944.
