FLOOD PREPAREDNESS

All of Nassau Bay is prone to repetitive flooding so it's critical to be prepared at all times. Here are some ways to protect yourselves, your neighbors, and your property.

City staff can help you determine if you are located in a high risk flood zone. Staff can provide FEMA map information including flood zones and base flood elevations, as well as information on flood insurance, floodways, past flooding, and natural and beneficial functions

Buy flood insurance There is a 30-day waiting period before a policy takes effect, and homeowner's insurance does not cover flood damage Visit floodsmart.gov for more information on flood insurance.

Contact the City Building Department at (281) 336-6292 to see if a permit is needed before you make any repairs or improvements to your home

Protect your home's foundation from flooding by making sure your downspouts drain away from your house. City staff can provide advice on how to correct drainage issues, information on grant opportunities in order to elevate your home, and other flood protection assistance including sources for financial assistance. Call the Building Department for more information or to request one-on-one site visits.

Keep debris and trash out of the streams and ditches so water doesn't back up and increase the flood risk to nearby buildings Don't dump in the drains as they lead to Galveston Bay. Make a disaster preparedness kit, and have a plan for evacuation. Visit the City website for more information on flood preparedness

To close out the Nassau Bay Garden Club’s 60th year, the club celebrated in style at its biennial fashion show fundraising event, A Butterfly Garden Affair, on April 11 at Lakewood Yacht Club Cochairs, Royce Walker and Rhonda Rivas, with the help of the fundraiser committee, pulled off a record event for the philanthropic efforts of the club The sold out event paid tribute to the six decades of community service from the club. Guests were greeted by historical club photos and stories on display in the ballroom and entrance foyer The theme of the show highlighted the club’s gardens throughout the city, including a butterfly pollinator garden in Swan Lagoon On each guest table, floral arrangements donated by H-E-B Clear Lake City expertly captured the butterfly garden motif

This year, the models included club members and elected officials from the Nassau Bay City Council, wearing fashions curated by The Clotheshorse Boutique and A Unique Boutique by Jeanette Styles ranged from casual to elegant Model and recently joined garden club member, Peggy Lynn Booth, said, “she wanted to get involved with the community,” and that is what lead her to try new things, like modeling fashions for The Clotheshorse Boutique in the show While preparing to model colorful ensembles from The Clotheshorse Boutique, long-time members, Kelly Halbach and Jayne Samson, reminisced about their involvement in the club fashion shows, dating back to the mid-nineties

City Council Member, Haley Uhl, who modeled dresses from A Unique Boutique by Jeanette, said, “It was a pleasure to be a part of a gathering that not only honors tradition but fosters meaningful relationships and shared joy. I’m grateful for the experience and proud to support such a vibrant and welcoming group ”Established in 1964, the Nassau Bay Garden Club educates its members in conservation, preservation and all things gardening and plants. The money raised from the event provides for the beautification, design, and maintenance of six gardens within Nassau Bay The garden club sponsors junior gardeners at two local elementary schools, Robinson Elementary and Stewart Elementary Additionally, the club funds a scholarship for students studying horticulture.

The Nassau Bay Garden Club extends its heartfelt thanks to the underwriters, corporate sponsors, donors, stylists and makeup artists, whose generosity helped make this a successful fundraising event The club looks forward to “planting the seeds” for the next 60 years!
