July 24, 2018 Greetings Realtists, It is a great pleasure to welcome distinguished Realtists and guests from around the country to my hometown of Atlanta, GA for the 2018 Annual Convention of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Incorporated (NAREB). Atlanta was founded as a transportation hub at the intersection of two railroad lines in 1837. On September 2, 1864, Atlanta was mostly burned to the ground during the American Civil War. However, the city rose from its ashes to become a national center of commerce. It attained international prominence as a major air transportation hub, with Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport being the world's busiest airport. Atlanta also became a major organizing center of the civil rights movement, with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph David Abernathy, and many other locals such as NAREB Past President Q.V. Williamson playing major roles in the movement's leadership. In the decades following, Atlanta earned a reputation as “a city too busy to hate" for the relatively progressive views of its citizens and leaders compared to other cities in the "Deep South.” I cannot find the words to express what an honor it is to serve as the 30th President of the oldest real estate trade association established to advocate for fair housing in America. Although social segregation has evolved from the levels that existed as recently as the 1960s, Realtists recognize there are still systemic barriers to fair housing in this country. Even as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, Realtists strongly believe that fair housing is no longer only about having the right to choose the community where you live. This belief has expanded to forming communities of opportunity by investing in neighborhoods and the people who live there. Fair housing has a role in fostering healthy people and neighborhoods, creating and expanding educational opportunities, as well as building neighborhoods that are economically diverse. NAREB remains committed to its building Black Wealth through Home Ownership initiative – 2 Million New Black Homeowners in 5 Years (2Mn5). As President, I am committed to lead our collaboration with corporate entities, governmental agencies, colleges, universities, and especially with the most trusted institution in our community which are our faith-based organizations in achieving the American Dream. In closing, I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with this year’s planning committee for the hard work and dedication to ensure this event’s success. Again, welcome to Atlanta! Sincerely,

Jeffrey Hicks

July 24, 2018 Greetings:

support.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, I am pleased to offer greetings to our REALTIST family, friends and partners who are joining us at our 2018 Annual Convention being held in the “ATL”, the “New York City of the South”, the “A”. I hope that you will enjoy the fun and sites in this host City, as well as the opportunities and networking that we are offering. Our Convention planning team, Education Committee and the NAREB leadership have worked tirelessly to assure that you will be well greeted and well treated. I, especially, want to thank our partners for their continued and invaluable

Since our last meeting, NAREB has participated in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation – Legislative Conference and workshops. We have hosted two Midwinter Conferences; along with Community Days in Las Vegas and Memphis. Many of our local boards from across the country hosted Community Day events during April’s Fair Housing Month, with each one reaching and touching more members and communities; while raising the NAREB brand. The optimism and enthusiasm that started in 2016 regarding the direction of NAREB and our collective future, coupled with a resolve to do what we can to keep NAREB at the forefront of issues affecting “Black Wealth” through Homeownership continues to swell. Our voices about the assets and dreams lost during the recession through lost home ownership are being well received and reaching new heights. This year, the country commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. At NAREB, our commemorations go way beyond 50 years since our mission of “Democracy in Housing” started in 1947; almost 20 years before the Federal Government decided to acknowledge fair housing. Even then, we all, understand the true tragic event that permeated the signing of the Act. We will hear from some of our members and other leaders as they share their memories in and around these events and how they perceive the changes since the signing of Fair Housing into law. During the 2017 Congressional Black Caucus held in DC, NAREB presented the most updated information on the “State of Housing in Black America” (SHIBA) which proved to be an intriguing eye opener. A record number on Congressional Members spoke to the issues and voiced support of NAREB. We will once again present the 2018 SHIBA report at the upcoming Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. You will hear some aspects of the current State at this convention. In the absence of an overreaching political structure, NAREB is unique in bringing people and organizations together, serving as a convener and getting things done. While our 2Mn5 initiative may have been set in motion by NAREB, our many partners have been involved as we have rolled out the message to our members and the broader community. Collaboration is powerful! This is the first year for our President Jeffery Hick. I would like to commend him for taking the baton from President Cooper without losing any ground. He has continued to guide and direct NAREB in its efforts to increase Black Homeownership and bring opportunities to our members. Of course, President Hicks could not do anything without the rest of his team of Vice Presidents, other elected officers, working committees and our staff, led by our Executive Director, Antione Thompson. I take this opportunity to thank him for his leadership, his vision, his commitment and his energy. NAREB and this Board appreciates his addition to the legacy. Thank you for joining us, Robert L. Hughes Chairman of the Board of Directors

Dear Realtists and Friends: Welcome to NAREB’s 71st Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. NAREB, the nation’s oldest, minority professional real estate trade association was founded in Tampa in 1947. In seven decades we have not wavered in our commitment to “Democracy In Housing,” diversity and inclusion in the real estate industry, and building generational wealth in the African-American community. The association is making great strides to advocate for Black real estate professionals and the communities that they serve. Congrats to Jeffrey Hicks and Chair Robert Hughes, Jr., for their leadership and service to NAREB, as well as First Vice President Donnell Williams and Chairman Hughes on the year-long work helping with NAREB’s efforts to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. We fully understand the battle for fair housing and fair lending is far from over. As we reflect on the 50th Anniversary of Fair Housing, let’s pause to recognize REALTISTS that were leaders inside and outside the association, such as W.D. Morrison, Nannie Black, Q.V. Williamson, and C. Delores Tucker. We also recognize all of the great men and women that sacrificed their time, businesses, and put their families at risk so that we could have the opportunity to sell and development real estate. We stand on the shoulders of giants that had a bold vision for our people and the United States. As such, we must continue to march onward and upward so that our children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren have a more prosperous future. In closing, I pray that you enjoy the convention. I want to thank Joan Chambers, Convention Chair, Sharon Henry, Convention Co-Chair, and the entire 2018 Convention Committee for their leadership, commitment, and dedication. You all have made this convention a memorable and historical moment for NAREB. I also want to thank the NAREB National Office team members Dianne Little, Rubye Wright, Joye Sistrunk, Erica Ford, C. Rene Wilson, Joanne Williams, Attorney Gerald Neal, Ricardo Pontes, Bishop Craig Worsham, and Roland Somerville. NAREB is on the Move! In Solidarity,

Antoine M. Thompson

Speakers Georgia Gubernatorial Candidate Stacy Abrams In May 2018, Stacey Abrams made history as the first African-American woman ever to win a major party nomination for governor when she beat Stacey Evans in Georgia’s primary election. In 2010, she became the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and the first African American to lead in the House of Representatives, working effectively across the aisle in Georgia’s Republican-dominated House. During her tenure, Ms. Abrams has halted legislation to raise taxes on the poor and middle class, and to roll back reproductive healthcare. She has successfully brokered compromises that led to progress on transportation, infrastructure, and education. Most recently, she passed legislation to improve the welfare of grandparents and other kin raising children and secured funding to support these families. Ms. Abrams has received the Friend of Labor award for her staunch support of working families and an A-rating from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in the same year. Ms. Abrams received degrees from Spelman College, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, and Yale Law School. She put her education to work to better the lives of Georgians through the government, nonprofit, and business sectors, and founded the New Georgia Project, which registered more than 200,000 voters of color between 2014 and 2016.

Former Mayor Bill Campbell Former Mayor Bill Campbell became the 57th Mayor of Atlanta and the city’s third AfricanAmerican mayor in a landslide victory in 1993. Under his leadership, the city leveraged the Olympic legacy into tangible benefits for the people of Atlanta. During his second term, Mayor Campbell’s vision of a New Atlanta for the 21st Century drove the city’s remarkable revitalization. He forged innovative partnerships with the private and public sectors to empower communities with new tools and hope for the future. For the first time in thirty years, people and businesses moved back into the city. Nearly every unit of public housing underwent renovation, and the city’s once troubled public housing system emerged as a model for other cities in the United States. The Campbell Administration, created with HUD and Fannie Mae, also created homeownership programs to attract homeowners into the city through affordable mortgages and down payment assistance. After taking office, the Mayor took Atlanta’s legendary commitment by providing equal opportunity for minorities and women. His leadership resulted in increased participation by minority and female firms at all levels. Looking toward the 21st century, Mayor Campbell set his sights on positioning Atlanta as one of America’s leading technology cities. He was the first African-American student to integrate the Raleigh school system in 1960. After several years of practicing law, he was elected to the Atlanta City Council in 1981.

Dr. C.T . Vivian Words spoken by President Obama on Nov 20, 2013 at the White House when Rev. Vivian was awarded the National Medal of Freedom: “A Baptist minister, C. T. Vivian was one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s closest advisors. Martin taught us, he says, that it’s in the action that we find out who we really are. Time and again, Rev. Vivian was one of the first to be in the action - one of the first freedom riders. In Selma on the courthouse steps to register Blacks to vote, for which he was beaten, bloodied and jailed. Rosa Parks said of him, even after things had supposedly been taken care of, and we had our rights, he was still out there, inspiring the next generation, including me, helping kids go to college with programs that would become Upward Bound. And at 89 years old, Rev. Vivian is still out there, still in the action, pushing us closer to our founding idea.” Words written on Rev. Vivian’s Medal of Freedom Certificate: Equipped only with courage and an overwhelming commitment to social justice, the Rev C. T. Vivian was a stalwart activist on a march toward racial equality. Whether at a lunch counter, on a Freedom Ride or behind the bars of a prison cell, he was unafraid to take bold action in the face of fierce resistance. By pushing change through nonviolent demonstration and advocacy, C. T. Vivian established and led numerous organizations to support under-served individuals and communities. His legacy of combating injustice will shine as an example for generations to come.

With God’s blessing, Pastor Williams, Jr. has made Salem one of the key churches in the growing Baptist network. Pastor Williams, Jr. has involved Salem in several notable social action ministries: a free psychological counseling program, a children’s day care center, the acquisition of property on which an additional edifice was constructed, and the development of a dual-structured, senior citizen high-rise. Grants were received totaling 5.6 million dollars for Phase I and Phase II of the Alice Williams Towers, in honor of his late mother. He gained notoriety when he relinquished this title to become the “voice of the people”. He spoke about the relationship of Christian consciousness to social evils, which is how he became known as “a man with a heart for the people.” In keeping with his mission to be the voice of the people, Pastor Williams’ most recent endeavor is as the founder of African American Churches Transforming Society (A.A.C.T.S.), a community based organization envisioned to be help revitalize churches, strengthen families and rebuild communities through churches working in concert with social and governmental agencies. Frank J. Williams, REALTOR® Chicago, IL

“There weren’t any people

that looked like me.” Frank Williams has witnessed a lot in nearly 80 years. After growing up in Flint Michigan — and being expelled from high school for dating the white girl he later married — he moved to Chicago in 1962. Despite having never considered real estate as a career because, “as a young black man, we didn’t see many people in our community in positions of power,” he received his real estate license in 1966 and opened his own firm in 1969. His practice faced immediate resistance for helping African Americans find homes in historically white neighborhoods. In 1971 demonstrators entered his office to demand who he could sell to, and in 1975, his home was firebombed. Overcoming these obstacles, he ascended to president of the Chicago chapter of the NAACP, president of the Chicago Association of REALTORS®, and was voted REALTOR® of the Year. “As a black American, a REALTOR®, and a parent, I am determined to help erase discrimination from the housing landscape.” April 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. We recognize that progress made stands on the broad shoulders of people like Frank Williams. We’re grateful for the work he’s done and sacrifices he’s made, and understand there’s more progress to be made. Visit www.FairHousing.realtor to read more about Frank and to join the commemoration.

“We are very pleased to now offer access to FICO® Scores for free as part of our financial literacy programs, this is an important addition to our services. Our financial literacy programs are a central part of our mission to support and help implement urban affordable housing and community development programs, and the ability to share FICO® Scores and financial education materials will be an added value for those we serve since it’s the most widely used credit score in lending decisions.” The NAREB Investment Division (NID)
