NYU STUDENT CENTER For my thesis project, I chose to create a Student Center for a fully rebranded New York University. The concept of the project centers around the principal of “activated circulation”. By considering circulation as an essential program element, expanding circulation size, and providing seating in and adjacent to the path, a space naturally creates opportunities for impromptu interaction which enhances learning. In addition to prominent horizontal circulation paths on each floor, the vertical circulation (stadium stair, ramps, and smaller stairs) was also a major consideration. The mezzanines and light shafts provide an opportunity for this connection to break the horizontal plane and span vertically as well. The zig zagging path (and zig zag forms seen on other planes throughout the design) are symbolic of the winding path life can take. A student may not be able to see where (s)he is going but can have confidence that through hard work and perseverance, everything will work out and come full circle. BRIGHTER FUTURE WELLNESS CENTER Brighter Future is a health and wellness center designed to aid young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their transition from living with their parents to living in a group home. The center provides holistic care for mental, physical, social, and financial health. In addition to general practitioners and a rotating schedule of specialists, the facility also provides opportunities for talk therapy, financial counseling, and health insurance advising. The center also contains several areas for Applied Behavior Therapy including teaching kitchens, laundry, and library facilities as well as a large social space for Social Skills Group Therapy. Many people with ASD are extremely gifted at math, problem solving, and pattern detection. To honor this gift, the design was inspired by the form of a cube, with consideration to the challenge of a rubik's cube. This can be seen both in the layout of the plan as well as in the many geometric patterns throughout the space. The design also incorporates a lot of natural elements as there is evidence to support that those with ASD can thrive in biophilic environments. Lastly, the materials selected have engaging textures because it is very common for people with ASD to run their hands along the nearest surface. CHAPPAQUA CHILDREN'S INFINITY CENTER The design for the Chappaqua Public Library Children's Infinity Center is inspired by infinity. With the equal access the public library provides, books and learning can take any child anywhere he or she wants to go. Individual custom built-in book nooks for quite reading, small tables for group work, and a spacious activity room for story time and arts and crafts provide children with the tools they need to learn and grow to infinity. The custom bookcases are designed to create the form of infinity throughout the space. The bookcases divide the space into age groups, providing greater privacy for progressively older age groups while built-in doorways ensure adult access for the safety of all children. This helps to give the oldest children a sense of autonomy and ownership over their library experience. The baffles on the ceiling help to reinforce the infinity shape and maintain a quiet library environment. Spring 2019 Software Used: AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, Photoshop
