Lessons to live by A

May we always remember the strong foundation those before us have built.

INSIDE

s a kid, I spent some time during summers helping out on my grandparents’ farm in Nebraska. For a city girl, it was fun — there were always animals to care for, chores to do and fences to fix. One time, when I was helping my grandpa fix one of those fences, I bent a nail while hammering it into a board. So, I pulled the nail out, dropped it on the ground, and grabbed a new

nail out of the bucket. “Pick that up,” my grandpa said. “Don’t be wasteful. You never know when you’ll need it, and you won’t have it.” At that time, I had heard many lessons of the Great Depression and of how things were during World War II — but this stuck. This was solid advice to live by. And it’s never been more important than these days, when

so much in our lives is disposable. But this wisdom is not. Which is why, for our annual Spirit of America issue, we wanted to feature the faces and lessons of the Greatest Generation. This country is built on so many of the principles they have learned and espoused through the years. We are running out of time to celebrate these incredible

people, so to memorialize their words, to make sure their lessons and advice live on, we have dedicated this section to them. In this time of celebrating the founding and independence of our country, they embody the essence of what it means to be an American. Now it’s up to us not to waste it.

Generational Wisdom Perseverance, honor and duty are recurring themes for members of the Greatest Generation, who experienced both the Great Depression and World War II. We asked them to share lessons for future generations, so that their wisdom may live on. PHOTOS AND COPY BY JESSICA SALMOND

I always tried to do the very best at what I did. I love to see girls accomplish things. I would tell them, take advantage of every opportunity that is handed to them. So many things slip by you at that age.

Alma Geraldine Haller BORN 1919, NEW MEXICO

Haller was one of the first women who served during World War II in the Women’s Army Corps. During the war, she was assigned to a secret mission. She and her colleagues lived in underground bunkers in Washington, D.C., and tracked aircraft that entered the D.C. radius.

Winifred ‘Wendy’ Hobson BORN 1923, MASSACHUSETTS

Dobson was born third of a family of 10 children in the Great Depression. Her mother used to cut men’s coats to fit her children in the winter. At 25, Dobson went into the Navy WAVES, which allowed her to go to Pratt Institute in New York City and earn a degree in costume design.

Dobson designed and sewed her own wedding dress.

Going into the service was the best thing I ever did. It was fabulous. A man told me to marry him at 19 — I told him to get lost. Be adventurous. There’s a whole world out there. There are lots of things you can do.”

Robert Flint BORN 1924, NEW YORK

Flint was drafted into the Navy during World War II, and somehow always ended up working in the kitchens helping to feed his fellow servicemen. When he finished his service, he got a degree in art from the University of Illinois.

Despite his constant assignment to the kitchen in the Navy, Flint’s true passion is art. He drew this portrait using ink.

When we were finally ready to go to war, my mom said to them, ‘If you can’t find anything better for him than to be in the kitchen, send him home!’”

Brandstatter lived with her parents and four siblings on a farm, raising chickens, a cow and a garden. A CALL TO HONOR Local veterans tour D.C. war memorials

T

he Honor Flight of West Central Florida completed its fifth year of service and its 22nd mission, flying 80 veterans to Washington, D.C. Veterans and volunteers from Sarasota, Manatee and surrounding counties flew out of the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport Tuesday, June 23, to spend the day in D.C. and view the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War memorials.

Eleven recent graduates of Sarasota Military Academy were among those volunteers who were assigned to a veteran for the day. “It’s been an honor,” said Austin Moriarty, one of the graduates. “Getting to talk to all the veterans gave me a new perspective. I learned history from someone involved, not just a textbook. The insight the veterans provided was invaluable.”

Paul Hefflefinger, a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran, reads a letter from a family member during the Honor Flight mail call.

by Dee Wernick, age 72 I started 20 Minutes to Fitness in 2005 and I’m proud to say that I was one of their first customers in Florida. When I moved closer to downtown, I simply had my files transferred to the 20 Minutes to Fitness studio located right on Main Street and continued my training. I now live in South Sarasota, but I make the drive each week for the best workout and the only workout where I get the results that I want to stay healthy and active. I’m 72 years old and I love to play tennis and as a result of the unique training at 20 Minutes to Fitness, my tennis game has improved simply because I have more energy, more stamina and I am much stronger! I always brag to my doctor when I get a good report and tell him about the benefits of 20 Minutes. My tennis buddies have also noticed a difference, commenting on my stronger tennis game. I know that everyone should do weight training, especially as we get older. But when I went on my own to countless gyms, while I felt as if I was doing something “good” for myself, I didn’t see any real results. But, with 20 Minutes to Fitness I saw results almost immediately in my muscle tone and strength. I have always been rather strong for my size, but I am now much stronger than I was at age 60. I give all the credit to my training at 20 Minutes to Fitness. While from time to time I have had some back and elbow issues (tennis!), the coaches are always tuned in to how I feel and how to adjust the training to address any problems that I might have. They keep specific records – starting from my initial evaluation and after each and every training session. For me, age is just a number – not a reason to stop enjoying my life. And as long as I can get to 20 Minutes to Fitness – I’ll never stop!

Edward Graham BORN 1929, ALABAMA

Graham said he initially wanted to live in the country and own cattle, but when the Korean War began, he changed his mind. He decided to be a pilot because he already had his license. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and flew an AU Corsair fighter plane. In the Vietnam War, Graham became a squadron commander and flew about 380 missions.

174983

The best part of Vietnam was I met my wife over there. … My (relationship) advice is you love her as hard as you can and pay attention to what you do with her. Don’t mess around. She’s the best thing … as far as I’m concerned, I’m still on my honeymoon.”

You have to keep busy. You have to have a goal. It keeps your mind and body going, or else you’re going to rust.”

Florence Katz BORN 1915, OHIO

Katz’s family was the only Jewish family in the town on Coshocton, Ohio. Her parents had immigrated to the U.S. from Russia and Latvia — her father as a stowaway. Although she grew up during the Great Depression, her parents always found enough money for her and her two sisters’ music lessons and books.

Richard Kanner BORN 1923, MICHIGAN

Kanner’s grandparents immigrated to the U.S. and worked their way up until they owned the biggest furniture store in Dayton, Ohio. They lost everything in the Great Depression. He started working after school when he was 10. He would wait outside the grocery store and offer to carry people’s groceries home. He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II to get out of Ohio.

It was a bad time, but I didn’t feel badly that I was that poor and had to work. I never felt poor because my friends were all poor. The life we had, you learned how to work hard and value education.” very

“I have purchased 8 homes and sold 6 homes over the last 38 years. My experience with Susan was absolutely the best experience I ever had in the sale of a home. Susan did a fantastic job of marketing our home, Everything from the professional photographer she used to the glossy pamphlet produced to the virtual tour of our home was excellent. She held several open houses in a very short period of time. She was very responsive to our needs and was considerate of our time. Due to her efforts our home sold in three weeks. I would highly recommend her to anyone in the market to either purchase a home or sell their home. She is the only realtor I will use in Florida to sell my home should that time come again. I have every confidence that she would be equally committed to the purchase of a home. A BIG special thank you to Susan.“ Martin & Adrianne H.

WAC TIMELINE MAY 1941 Congresswoman Edith Nourse Rogers proposes a bill to establish an Army women’s corps. DEC. 7, 1941 The attack on Pearl Harbor forces Congress to see the need for women in the Army.

Three Longboat Key women who met at last year’s Veterans Day parade have become fast friends.

Kristen Herhold

Evelyn Fresch, Francey O’Brien and Shirley Beachum catch up at their monthly lunch May 21.

KRISTEN HERHOLD STAFF WRITER

Francey O’Brien in Paris following its liberation in 1944.

Three Longboat Key women show you’re never too old to make new friends. Shirley Beachum, Evelyn Fresch and Francey O’Brien, all 93, met last November at the Rotary Club of Longboat Key’s Veterans Day parade. “When the parade was over, we all sat at the same table and found out we were the same age,” Beachum said. The women had all served in the Women’s Army Corps, or WAC, during World War II. The Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, or WAAC, was founded in 1942 and renamed the WAC in 1943 when it became a branch of the U.S. Army. WAC members were the first women allowed to wear officer insignia. Nearly 150,000 women

served in the WAC during World War II. “We were the originals,” O’Brien said. “Nobody thought we could do it, and we did. The soldiers weren’t excited we were there, but we proved to them we could do it.” The three women were born within two months of each other, enlisted in the WAC the same year and lived on the same small island, yet they never knew each other until last year. “It’s been a short friendship, but it’s fun,” Fresch said. “We have a good time. It’s wonderful how we met. It blew my mind. It’s very nice that we found one another.” The women have lunch on the last Thursday of every month at a local restaurant — they toast to each other with bloody marys. Most of their lunches are spent laughing, talking about their families and sharing anecdotes.

“I have a cell phone,” Fresch shared with the others at lunch. “I didn’t want one, but my family thought I should have one. Where is it now? Not with me.” They also talk about aging and laugh about the process. “My kid suggested I get one of those Life Alerts, but I said no,” Beachum said. “I also just got cleared to drive, and I’m set for another six years, and that’s a scary thought.” Although they are spending their summers apart, they plan to celebrate their 94th birthdays together in the fall. “We’ll wait to celebrate, of course,” Fresch said. “We wouldn’t celebrate our birthdays without each other.” The women may have only known each other for seven months, but they consider each other best friends. “We’re a couple of triplets,” Beachum said.

MAY 14, 1942 The Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps proposal passes with a 249-86 vote in the House of Representatives and a 38-27 vote in the Senate. JULY 20, 1942 Four hundred and forty women attend the first six-week officer candidate training in Fort Des Moines, Iowa. JAN. 27, 1943 The first WAAC unit to go overseas goes to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s headquarters in Algeria. JULY 3, 1943 The WAAC is officially incorporated into the Army and becomes the WAC. NOV. 8, 1967 Congress removes restrictions on women officers, allowing them to achieve general officer rank. OCT. 29, 1978 The WAC is disbanded, and members are integrated into the Army.

Francey O’Brien

Shirley Beachum

O’Brien, a Windward Bay resident, was born Sept. 21, 1921, in western North Carolina. She enlisted in the WAAC in April 1943. She received 13 weeks of training in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., before going to Kentucky for Army administration school. She was then assigned to Fort Gordon, Ga. In spring 1944, O’Brien was sent to Cheltenham, England, and assigned to the ordinance department, where preparations for D-Day were being planned. She was sent to Paris after it was liberated, where she dealt with records. She was honorably discharged Sept. 14, 1945, at Fort Bragg, N.C. “I liked how I got to move around,” O’Brien said. “I saw a lot of the world and experienced a lot.”

Beachum, a Longbeach Village resident, was born Aug. 7, 1921 and also enlisted in the WAAC in 1943. She worked as a dispatcher and link instructor at the Pueblo Army Air Base in Pueblo, Colo. On June 6,1944, D-Day, Beachum was sent overseas to London on the Queen Mary. She was assigned to the fifth wing headquarters in London, working for the Army Airway Communications System (AACS). In 1945, when Germany surrendered, the AACS headquarters were moved to Wiesbaden, Germany. She was then honorably discharged. “I loved the camaraderie with all the other girls, especially with me being an only child,” Beachum said.

— Francey O’Brien

Born Sept. 22, 1921, Fresch, a Gulfshore resident, enlisted as a volunteer in the WAC Sept. 1, 1943, as a legal secretary in Des Moines, Iowa. She spent two years in the U.S. and was transferred to Hickham Airfield, Hawaii. Fresch was one of the first two WAC women to set foot on the then-foreign soil of Hawaii. She spent two years in Hawaii and returned to the U.S. at the completion of the war. She was discharged March 1, 1946. “I made some very, very good friends in service,” Fresch said. “But time passes, and when I got out of the service, I left it. I got married less than a month after.”

I feel very strongly about America. To young people, I would say, ‘Appreciate what we have and try to make it better. There’s no place in the world that can touch America, and try to make things even better than they are.’”

Abner Swartz BORN 1924, RHODE ISLAND

Swartz enlisted in the 10th Mountain Division in the Army during World War II. The troop was sent to Italy to fight Germans in the Apennine Mountains. In February 1945, the division took Riva Ridge during a nighttime operation and prevented the Germans from surveying American movement below. They spent three months in the mountains.

Lee Auslander BORN 1914, NEW YORK

Auslander grew up during the Great Depression. His father lost all of their money during the stock market crash, but he kept his job. Auslander was drafted into World War II in 1943 and became a radar operator, and also relayed secret codes to officers. During the war, when he moved through Europe, he always kept his camera with him, and documented the scenes around him, including the concentration camp in Dachau, Germany.

I was 9 and living in London with my family when the war ended. London was bombed out, and we lived in an underground railroad station for a month before the war ended. I still don’t know how my dad got to work and back home to us in the station every day. We were in there with a lot of other families. Everyone just struggled to survive. On VE Day I celebrated with hundreds of others as we walked across the London Bridge and hundreds of fireworks were shot off into the sky. I entered the Royal Air Force years later in 1955.

Yes, I am part of the World War II generation, having begun my college years in 1942. At that time, my oldest brother, Gerry, was in the intelligence sector of the U.S. Army, and my middle brother, Cliff, was training as a bombardier in the USAF. Both were about to go into overseas service, as my sister and I were concentrating on academic knowledge in collegiate institutions. Come 1944, and the war was raging in Europe and Asia. I was now a college junior; my brothers were serving in the military in Europe. The college dean wished to see me in his office that particular day. What had or hadn’t I done? Well, the world fell apart many times over with her message: “Your parents want you to come immediately home. Take the next train. You will be met at the railroad station. I knew! I knew the terrible, horrifying news. Which brother? Harrowing hours later, the driver and I pulled up to our family home, where countless numbers of cars were parked. I jumped out of the car and into

I was an Army Air Corps radio operator and mechanic. I was on the flying crew and a member of the 1503 Air Transport and was based at Hamilton Field in California. I flew into Kwajalien from Guam the day before the end of the war. I landed on Kwajalien, and we were heading back to Hawaii. It’s an eight-hour flight from Guam, and the next stop is Johnston Atoll, a small place you can walk around in fewer than 30 minutes. From there, it was another seven hours into Hickam Field in Hawaii. I was in service for 35 months, from April 1943 to March 1946. I was discharged before I was 21. I probably could not have afforded to go to college without the GI Bill. I attended Michigan State University and graduated in three years and one summer after attending the school for four months while in service. At the end of the war, I was surprised a little bit. I didn’t listen to news very much, and Yank magazine was probably the only thing I read. I didn’t have much time. We flew sometimes 12 hours a day, sometimes eight hours. I knew at the end of the war I was very lucky. I’m still riding my bike six miles a day. Many others can’t say that. I’m very fortunate to have made it through the war. I was — and still am — very lucky.

Chuck Fuller, Longboat Key I was in a B-29 bomber high over the north end of Japan at the beginning of the day World War II ended. General McArthur was scheduled to steam into Tokyo Harbor to sign the peace treaty papers that day. Because of the many years of friendship that have developed since then between Americans and the Japanese, most Americans today have no idea of how distrustful and suspicious we were of the Japanese due to their deceitful and evil ways in beginning and conducting the war. We thought that they might be setting a trap for our theater commander and the elements of our fleet accom-

Verle Christensen, Sarasota I was on Iwo Jima at the end of the war, and I was there when they dropped the atomic bombs. Our group, the communications group, was on the communications between the ground and the aircraft that day. I was on Iwo for eight months. The B29s would go over at 5 to 6 in the morning, and we had all the night fighters there. We thought it was great when the war ended, but we didn’t celebrate much because we were on Iwo Jima. Outside, you could hear some gunfire going off from Army celebrations.

panying him. Therefore, we decided on a “Show of Strength Mission,” which involved putting every B-29 bomber we could over Japan as a deterrent. We were based on Tinian, an island in the Pacific. We left in the dark so as to arrive at dawn at the IP (initial point where the bombers met to form their formation). All night long I kept telling the flight engineer that sparks were coming out of No. 4 engine. He would check his instruments and report that all seemed well. However, as we neared the IP and the visibility improved, we could see smoke coming out of the engine. So we went back to Iwo Jima, about halfway back to Tinian,

for repairs. So, you ask where I was on the day the war ended. It started over Japan and finished on Iwo Jima. Anyway, we did get to climb Mount Suribachi and explore the caves where the Japanese had held out so fiercely.

At the end of the war, I was in rest camp in the Hawaiian Islands after participating in the battles for the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The bomb was dropped and the war ended suddenly. I was the cook on a Landing Craft Infantry, LCI 1012. There were two cooks on the ship. At war’s end, they cut the crew by 50%. One cook went home; I stayed aboard as the only remaining “cookie.” We thought we were going home. Think again. We got orders to become part of the occupation force, specifically to repatriate Japanese troops that had been fighting in China and elsewhere. We took them to Kyushu, in effect becoming a ferry service. We were close to Nagasaki where the bomb was dropped. The Japanese soldiers we were relocating were a weary, dispirited and frightened bunch. They expected that we would treat them the way they treated their prisoners of war. Nobody aboard our ship spoke Japanese and we assumed, incorrectly, that they did not speak English. When I tried to pantomime giving them turkey for a Thanksgiving dinner, one of our passengers informed me in perfect English that he did not eat American food ... but that he was a 1940 graduate of Stanford University. Live and learn ... I was on this duty for about a year, after which we set sail for San Diego — a journey of 53 days in our slug of a ship, which had only half her engines working. They weren’t about to fix any-

thing at that point in time. Immediately after we disembarked, finally, in San Diego, we ran into our captain on land. He told us, “I didn’t see you guys. We just got orders to take 1012 to Florida for decommissioning but, as I said, I didn’t see you. Now get out of here, get on a train, go home and have a good life.” That’s what I did.

Safeguarding water resources is

Devin Lawrence, Environmental Associate South Pasture Mine, Hardee County

Being good stewards of local water sources is an important part of what we do at Mosaic. As a fifth-generation Floridian and an environmental associate for our phosphate operations, I’m part of a team that monitors water to ensure it meets Florida’s water quality standards. In fact, we monitor and report on more than 30 water outfalls on our property as well as nearby creeks and streams. We take these responsibilities seriously — for our families as well as yours. We help the world grow the food it needs.
