Who are these two little mermaids? They’re the granddaughters of Key residents Joe and Karen Iannello, of Bayview Drive. Ariana Carolina Iannello, right, born Feb. 10, is the newest addition to the family. She recently joined her older cousin, Ayla Blair Balfour, 1, for a photo-op on Longboat’s beach.

Longboat Key Fire Recue Chief Paul Dezzi recently issued an informal hiring notice for new firefighter/paramedics. He interviewed 24 candidates and narrowed the list down to 12. But of a dozen potential hires, just one was interested in becoming a Longboat Key firefighter/paraSEE FIREFIGHTERS PAGE 2A

Six firefighters must retire in 2016. Fire Chief Paul Dezzi worries lagging salaries and high pension costs for employees will make it difficult to fill the void when they leave.

Former NHL New York Islanders coach Al Arbour was honored in the team’s final regular-season game April 11. Arbour was unable to attend, so his wife, Claire, dropped the puck at the game in his honor. The couple’s four children were also in attendance. Arbour, a Longboat Key resident, served as the team’s coach from 1973 to 1986, one year after it formed in 1972. He coached the team to four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983. He led the team to a winning season every year from 1974 to 1986 and set the NHL record for 19 consecutive playoff series wins. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996. “He built that franchise, and that’s why they honored him,” Claire Arbour said.

medic. But Dezzi will need six new firefighter/paramedics to fill a void that the department faces next May, when six veteran firefighters who are enrolled in the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) must retire. Dezzi says the current defined benefit plan that firefighters agreed to two years ago as part of their current three-year contract, which expires Sept. 30, is inhibiting his ability to attract new hires. “If I lost those six guys tomorrow I couldn’t fill the positions,” Dezzi told 25 members of the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key at their April 23 meeting. Firefighters opted to enter the

Florida Retirement System after the town froze their pension as part of their current contract. FRS mandates employees contribute 3% of their salaries. On top of that, firefighters agreed to split the town’s required contribution 50/50. The current required contribution is 19.82%, which means the town pays 9.91% and firefighters pay 9.91%. With the 3% mandated contribution, that means firefighters currently pay 12.91% toward their defined benefit plan. That payment could rise: As part of that deal, firefighters agreed that the town would only match the defined benefit contribution up to 13%. So, if the FRS defined benefit plan contributions rise, for example, to 30%, the town would only pay 13%, and firefighters’ contribution would rise to 20%, with firefighters paying 17% as part of the split with the town plus their 3% mandated contribution. The firefighter union agreed to the cap in its quest to keep defined benefit plans because those types of plans don’t put the risk on the employee if the economy deteriorates, causing the value of the stock plan to decline. But in nearby municipalities and counties, firefighter paramedics pay the required 3% FRS contribution and the rest of the agreed upon contribution is paid for by the county or municipality, regardless of how high it climbs, Dezzi said. “It’s tough to compete with that when we convince new hires to come out to the Key,” Dezzi said. Complicating matters, Dezzi

said, is that new hires are aware the town hasn’t offered step increases for the past seven years as part of a new contract, meaning there’s not a big enough pay separation gap between new hires, veterans and management. “I have trouble getting firefighters to work into a management role because they know they can make more being on the line,” Dezzi said. “That’s a problem. Guys are losing money working here, and I have trouble grooming management positions.” The problem isn’t an unexpected one. “We knew we would struggle a bit with recruiting because of the pension issue,” said Lisa Silvertooth, the town’s human resources manager. “But it’s what was agreed upon and ratified by the union.” Silvertooth and Town Manager Dave Bullock point out that as part of the last negotiations, the town offered a defined contribution plan for all firefighters and agreed to pay for all of it. “But the risk was on the employee if the plan’s return went

down, and they didn’t want that,” Silvertooth said. Dezzi hopes union negotiations with the town this summer for a new three-year contract, which will take effect Oct. 1, will result in a more favorable pension contribution plan that will entice new hires. “I think it’s more important to fix the pension issue before we fix the wage issue,” Dezzi said. Dezzi is also concerned that when the six longtime firefighters retire, his department won’t be able to fill the institutional knowledge gap. Dezzi said new hires don’t have a long-term commitment like they did years ago. “What we’re seeing now is guys who agree to come from the East Coast of Florida because they want to live over here,” Dezzi said. “But as soon as a job opens up nearby with better benefits, they jump ship.” Silvertooth is compiling a comparison chart of firefighter salaries and pensions in area fire departments to discuss during upcoming negotiations.

Longboat Key Fire Recue Chief Paul Dezzi says he’s preparing for Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s upcoming certification as a trauma hospital, which could happen as soon as this week. On April 23, he told Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key members the move means that both ends of the island are served by a trauma hospital because trauma patients on the north end of the island are already served by Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, which also has trauma certification. “Nowhere else has a trauma hospital on both ends of their community,” Dezzi said. It also means that, in most instances, helicopter landings on the Key will be scarce. “We’ll still call for a helicopter if traffic is backed up in season,” Dezzi said. “But that’s the only time you’ll see helicopters on the island.” An assessment of the 30-year-old south fire station will also be performed in two weeks to determine whether the station can be renovated or needs to be torn down. Dezzi also reiterated his support for a 911 dispatch service from Sarasota County. “It’s the best decision in my opinion,” Dezzi said.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CASE OF

THE COLONY U.S. BANKRUPTCY JUDGE K. RODNEY MAY

KURT SCHULTHEIS SENIOR EDITOR

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge K. Rodney May announced at an April 14 hearing that he plans to file an order against Colony Lender LLC and Orlando-based Unicorp National Development Inc. for a list of sanctions. But the sanctions aren’t official until May enters a written order detailing the sanctions. May indicated during the

The once iconic resort at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive remains shuttered after nearly five years. The following players hold key roles in determining its future.

hearing that he will file the ruling within weeks. Colony Lender and Unicorp will appeal that ruling, according to Colony Lender principal David Siegal. May is the judge whose 2010 ruling ultimately gave owners possession of their units, leading the Colony to close.

U.S. MIDDLE DISTRICT OF FLORIDA JUDGE STEVEN MERRYDAY U.S. Middle District of Florida Judge Steven Merryday will hear the appeal. Merryday is the judge who reversed 2009 rulings by May in 2011 and ordered May to determine damages against the association. Until Merryday rules, U.S. bankruptcy trustees are unable to hold sales to distribute

money to bankruptcy creditors, which could eventually lead to a redeveloped resort on the Colony property at 1620 Gulf of Mexico Drive. May could approve bankruptcy sales pending Merryday’s decision, but appeals must be exhausted before a date for those sales can be set.

The only way the Colony site could be redeveloped sooner is if all parties agree to a settlement. The following parties would need to agree to the settlement:

WHAT ABOUT MURF? Longtime Colony Beach & Tennis Resort owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber may no longer be in control of the Colony, but he’s still got a stake in bankruptcy proceedings. Klauber is still a partial debtor of Colony Investors Inc., a corporation that could receive payment from a future bankruptcy sale. He has interests in three entities subject to bankruptcy proceedings and future sales. One of those entities, Resorts Management Inc., is a general partner of Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Ltd., which still has a claim against the association. The association is still appealing a judgment of approximately $23 million against it. Could Klauber be involved in a future resort? “Some participants have expressed an interest in completing the development and have indicated they would like Dr. Klauber to be involved,” said Klauber’s attorney, Charles Bartlett. “But his stake in a future development depends on how everything shakes out.” Past redevelopment proposals have included a Klauber tribute area at the resort, which the Klauber family turned into an iconic tennis resort hotel in the 1970s and 1980s.

THE ROLE OF THE TRUSTEES

DAVID SIEGAL AND RANDY LANGLEY David Siegal, an attorney, and Randy Langley, a real estate developer, are the principals of Colony Lender LLC, which is awaiting sanctions from May for violating a bankruptcy stay. Colony Lender LLC plans to appeal. Siegal and Langley purchased overdue bank loans on resort property controlled by longtime Colony owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber, including an 80% interest in the 2.3-acre recreational property from Bank of America in 2010 for $4.5 million, followed by a 15% interest in the property. It received a judgment of more than $14.3 million in a September 2013 foreclosure trial and placed the

winning bid in July 2014 to become 95% owner of the recreational property and 100% owner of the other properties. Colony Lender sued unit owners for more than $5 million in damages over the recreational facilities lease, but, as part of the sanctions, May will require Colony Lender to dismiss those claims and, with Unicorp, write a letter to unit owners stating that claims against them have been dismissed.

CHUCK WHITTALL Chuck Whittall is president of Orlandobased Unicorp National Development, which has an agreement to purchase Colony Lender’s resort assets. Like Colony Lender, Unicorp is awaiting sanctions from May for violating the bankruptcy stay.

JAY YABLON

Representing Colony unit owners Jay Yablon, a Schenectady, N.Y.-based patent trademark and copyright attorney, serves as the voice of most unit owners in his role as president of the Colony Beach & Tennis Association’s board of directors. Unit owners have had possession of their units since 2010, when May converted the Colony’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization with its unit owners to a Chapter 7 liquidation. The conversion dissolved the partnership that ran the Colony and converted the Colony from a hotel resort to a condominium association.

ANDY ADAMS Tennessee developer Andy Adams and his entities, including Colony Beach Investors Inc. and Breakpointe LLC, own 71 units, or approximately 30% of units, on the property. Because future development plans and/ or settlements could require approval of 75% of unit owners, Adams will play a key role in the resort’s future. Adams’ Breakpointe LLC also owns a 5% interest in the recreational property.

n U.S. Trustee Douglas Menchise is in control of everything relating to the recreational lease and damages for that lease. A rec lease damage claim judgment against the association for approximately $2.5 million has not been awarded. n U.S. Trustee William Maloney controls the former partnership and its assets between the hotel operator (Klauber) and the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association, which comes with the responsibility of settling a judgment of approximately $23 million against the association that Merryday issued in 2012. The association has appealed that judgment. Maloney’s main goal is to settle $23 million worth of claims from that judgment when he is ordered to set a bankruptcy sale.

“I think it will be under construction by the end of the year, and that’s exciting. I’m still working on getting the cost of the project down more. It’s down to $3.11 million right now. The goal is for Sarasota County to help pay for it.”

“I recommended going with Sarasota County, and that’s the direction I have to move forward with. But working with both counties on this showed me that both counties are looking out for our best interest.” TRAFFIC CONGESTION:

“For years, the Florida Department of Transportation has told the barrier islands to just wait until after season and the traffic will go away. That seemed like a reasonable answer when I worked on the other side of the bay, but it’s not a reasonable answer now that I’m on this side of the bay. We need FDOT to own the problem, and that’s why we’re trying to get them to do a traffic study that looks at and addresses all the issues.” — KURT SCHULTHEIS

Tennis Center supporters volley for respect SENIOR EDITOR

K urt Schultheis

Longboat Key Public Tennis Center member Andy Thoms serves the ball during a game Monday.

Can the town measure the success of the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center based on revenue streams? Past Longboat Key commissioners have believed it was an appropriate measurement, but members of the Friends of Tennis Inc., a nonprofit organization formed in 2001 to support future enhancements of the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center, think that’s ridiculous. Tennis Center members and Friends of Tennis officials are also becoming frustrated with what they perceive as poor financial support for basic operational upkeep of the facility. The town completed the tennis center in 2003. Although some past commissioners complained about its cost, the town never had a policy about how much it should bring in or cost. Now, current commissioners agree that although past policy was for the tennis center to reach at least a break-even status, the tennis center merits a different approach. Why? Friends of Tennis President David Gutridge argues that without his organization’s financial support of more than $300,000 since 2001, the tennis center

ments will only be made available if the tennis center earns them, meaning, only if it has income in excess of expenses sufficient to fund these items,” Gutridge said. “If this is true, we urge our town to approach this differently.” Commissioners agreed with a suggestion from Gutridge to formulate a three- to 10-year operational plan for the tennis center. “The tennis center is an asset to the town,” Commissioner Phill Younger said. “I’m inclined to agree with you that we treat it like a red-headed stepchild.” Commissioner Jack Daly said he was shocked that Friends of Tennis spent $16,000 on court resurfacing. “That’s a very expensive line item,” Daly said. “Resurfacing is one of many operational needs the town should be supporting, not Friends of Tennis.” Town Manager Dave Bullock told the commission “an unwillingness to invest in the maintenance of the tennis center would be foolish.” Bullock said he will work with staff to create a $15,000 to $20,000 capital improvement budget for the tennis center for commissioners to discuss further at budget workshops this summer. “There’s not a public tennis center in the country that has positive cash flow,” Gutridge said. “But I do know this facility adds value to the town and attracts visitors who become residents. I’m glad to hear things might be changing.”

IMPROVEMENTS The Longboat Key-based The Friends of Tennis Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center, announced in a letter to Mayor Jack Duncan three weeks ago it dedicated more than $19,000 in funds to pay for tennis center improvements over the last three years. wouldn’t be open for business. Within the last three years alone, the organization has spent more than $19,000 on tennis court resurfacing, a new golf cart and other equipment. Donations from members have funded everything from patio furniture to icemakers. And Friends of Tennis supporters don’t think their organization should bear the weight of these costs any longer. “Whether true or not, tennis center members have long felt that the previous town government viewed the tennis center as its red-headed step child, something to be tolerated but not truly loved and embraced, even though it had over 26,000 individual visits this past October through March time period,” Gutridge told commissioners at their March 16 regular workshop. Gutridge said more than 150 visitors per month in season are turned away because the courts are too busy. And Friends of Tennis’ annual Super Senior Category II tournament in December attracted 228 players from 31 states, including nationally ranked players. “Excluding the beaches, I imagine this far exceeds the usage of the Key’s other park and recreational facilities combined, even though those facilities cost the town far more (in annual upkeep) than the tennis center,” Gutridge said. The tennis center’s operational expenses in fiscal year 2013-14 were $173,313. “Friends of Tennis has been told that funds to make improve-

STATE OF THE

BEACH KURT SCHULTHEIS

PASS 1 LONGBOAT DREDGING/BEACH FILL

SENIOR EDITOR

$20 million.

Start date: Summer/fall Amount of sand: 239,000 cubic yards

In the next two years, that’s the amount of money the town is prepared to spend on three separate Longboat Key beach projects. This snapshot shows the state of the island’s beach and when you could see more sand on eroded portions of the shoreline.

GROINS

Longboat Key Public Works Director Juan Florensa said construction of two groins near the North Shore Road beach access is 90% complete. The popular beach access could reopen by Memorial Day weekend. Cleanup is starting in the construction area, and trucks are now bringing approximately 7,000 cubic yards of sand to the area in and around the two groins. The structures will keep sand on the shoreline that often washes away into Longboat Pass.

BEER CAN ISLAND

LONGBOAT PASS DREDGING PROJECT

The state of Beer Can Island erosion is severe. At high tide, there’s no northern shoreline for beachgoers who arrive by boat. The town agreed to nix a terminal rock groin that was supposed to be constructed near the western tip of Beer Can Island to combat erosion. The groin was part of a permit challenge settlement the town agreed to two years ago to allow the two North Shore Road groins to be built. Those groins will slow sand loss on Beer Can because when sand is swept into Longboat Pass, it essentially starves Beer Can Island of sand.

As soon as this summer, the town hopes to perform a $3.5 million dredging of Longboat Pass to fill in eroded areas of the north end with approximately 239,000 cubic yards of sand from Gulfside Road to the North Shore Road beach access. Good news came for the town April 22 when former Manatee County Commissioner Joe McClash announced he will withdraw his challenge of a state permit for the project.

KEY TRUCK 2 CENTRAL HAUL BEACH FILL

7A

Start date: Fall Amount of sand: 315,000 cubic yards

SOUTH END BEACH PROJECT Town staff is working as quickly as it can to address a severely eroded shoreline behind L’Ambiance and neighboring Islandside condominiums that include The Pierre, Longboat Key Towers, Sanctuary and the Privateer. So much sand has been lost that at high tide Gulf water laps at 7-foot beach escarpments that are kept in place by large areas of vegetated dunes. Florensa said he visits the south-end erosion hot spots weekly to stay apprised of the situation. He says that despite the look of the beach, there’s still a healthy vegetative dune system in place behind the condos that will keep the condos protected

MID-KEY BEACH PROJECT Longboat Pass and New Pass don’t have enough sand to fill in eroded areas of the shoreline in the center of the Key. That means the three-tiered beach project beach project will come with a $10,983,192 sand-haul project. Dump trucks will bring approximately 250,000 cubic yards of sand from a sand source in the middle of the state in the fall.

EMERGENCY SAND TRUCK HAUL PROJECT

until sand arrives from a $3 million New Pass dredging project that could begin this summer if permits are approved. The project will place 315,000 cubic yards of sand from New Pass to restore a recreational beach on the south end. The town is hopeful it can perform both the Longboat Pass and New Pass dredging projects back to back this summer to minimize mobilization costs.

Town Manager Dave Bullock said he will bring back an emergency dump truck project again if judicial challenges by individuals or environmental organizations delay the dredging projects by challenging the permits. “The commission told us if there’s a delay in the (south end) project, to bring back the $1.5 million truck haul project,” Bullock said. The town is currently working on revising permits for emergency dump truck sand haul projects for the south end of the Key and portions of the middle of the island.

EMS DISPATCH: TAKE THE RISK It’s a common dilemma: the devil you know versus the one you don’t. In spite of the angst, Longboat should stay the course: Make the switch. If it doesn’t work, change again. Businesses constantly face this decision: the devil you know versus the devil you don’t. For years, let’s say, a business purchases services from a reliable, trusted vendor. And then, suddenly, there is change. The vendor changes course, and it changes the relationship. Or, another vendor comes along and offers an attractive alternative — a service that is billed to save money and still be as adequate or better than the existing vendor’s service. What do you do? Pay the additional cost with your trusted existing vendor to stay up with technology, or go with the untested vendor who assures adequate service at a more affordable cost? The devil you know versus the one you don’t. This is the dilemma the town of Longboat Key faces with its police, fire and emergency dispatch services. For more than two years, Town Manager Dave Bullock, Police Chief Pete Cummings, Fire Chief Paul Dezzi and other town staff members have been researching the best option for the town: • Stay with the town’s current provider, Manatee County, which is investing in a new digital dispatch technology, one that would cost the town an estimated $250,000 more a year over 10 years than its present service. • Or go with Sarasota County’s less expensive dispatch services. Either way, there are tradeoffs. In March, after much debate over the pros and cons of the choices, a majority of town commissioners opted for Sarasota County’s dispatch services. Last week, the issue bubbled up again, with Commissioners Pat Zunz and Irwin Pastor wanting to reopen discussions. But the majority opted to proceed with signing on to Sarasota County’s services. One of the curious aspects in this saga is that after signing on to Sarasota County’s less expensive system, commissioners agreed to eliminate about

SEND IN YOUR VOTE

By now, all Longboat Key registered voters should have received in the mail their mail-in ballots for the May 12 special election. The ballot question is whether to allow up to 300 new tourism units with tourism and accessory uses on the southernmost tip of the Longboat Key Club and Resort’s property along Longboat Club Road. This would not expand the already approved density on Longboat Key. It would convert those units from residential to tourism use. We recommend: Vote yes

$290,000 of the savings to be gained with Sarasota County. They did so by agreeing to allow the police department to hire five employees to man the police station 24/7, essentially refilling the five positions that were to be eliminated. To be sure, dispatch services are a touchy subject. They affect emergency response times — crucial to the Key’s residents. And it makes commissioners nervous about the unknown: whether changing to Sarasota’s dispatch will result in the same service, better or worse. This can be debated ad infinitum. But rather than prolong the debate and angst, commissioners should proceed as they voted. Go with it. Don’t squelch change for fear of the unknown. We’d never get anywhere. Take the risk. Devil be damned. If it doesn’t work, change. Surely there’s an “out clause.”

GOOD CALL ON TOWN CENTER Last week provided good news on the development front. The city of Sara-

sota appears to be heading toward constructing a parking garage on St. Armands Circle. And the town of Longboat Key has pulled back — at least temporarily — on its efforts to lead the creation of a town center near Publix. The parking garage is long overdue. Financing, as always, will be the challenge. But now that there is the will, there will be a way. Thinking ahead, you can expect there will be some type of bond issue. And if you are realistic, you also can predict the city of Sarasota will have to resurrect parking meters and paid-parking garages to create revenue — not just for St. Armands Circle, but also for Southside Village, Burns Court and downtown. Nothing is free. Meantime, Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock made a smart call when he recommended the Town Commission cancel a public workshop on a town center. Bullock said he would like to have two months to work with surrounding property owners. We have always been skeptical of the town serving as the developer and land broker on the town center concept. That’s never a government’s forte. In this case, whoever is doing the brokering and developing would need to confer and negotiate with as many as eight property owners and leaseholders. No easy feat. And certainly timeconsuming. At some point, commissioners will realize they will need third-party experts to aggregate all of the property and search for an experienced developer who can deliver what commissioners envision. But first things first: No developer of any smarts will consider taking on a town-center concept until he knows 1) whether the Longboat Key Club and Resort has the town’s approval to expand; 2) what’s in store for the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort; and 3) whether the empty storefronts at the Shoppes at Bay Isles will fill up and the businesses will succeed.

man, Labor member, read a report from the Jewish National Committee operating somewhere in Poland, saying: “‘Last month, we still reckoned the number of Jews in the whole territory of Poland as from 250,000 to 300,000. In a few weeks, no more than 50,000 of us will remain. “‘In our last moment before death, the remnants of Polish Jewry appeal for help to the whole world. May this, perhaps our last voice from the abyss, reach the ears of the whole world.’ “Without skipping a beat, the story continued: ‘The Commons also approved an installment of 3,863 pounds to help the International Red Cross open an office in Shanghai … ’ There it was: Buried in the third paragraph of a fiveparagraph story on page 4 — a quarter-million people about to be exterminated. This, after 3 million had already been slaughtered. And yet, the ears of the whole world did not hear the last voices from the abyss. As Leff wrote: “From the start of the war in Europe, to its end nearly six years later, the New York Times and other mass media treated the persecution and the annihilation of the Jews of Europe as a secondary story.”

The parallels today, of course, are not completely the same — at least not because of the Internet and social media. Most of us have seen and heard the stories: • The burning of the Jordanian pilot; • The beheadings of American, British and Japanese journalists; • The beheadings of the 21 Coptic Christians; • The slaying of the editor of Charlie Hebdo and the Jews at the kosher deli in Paris; • The young Jewish man gunned down outside of a Copenhagen synagogue; • The crucifixions and mass executions by ISIS in Iraq; • We saw news reports of the 140 Nigerian college students who were executed because they were Christians; • And it has been almost a year since First Lady Michelle Obama participated in a Twitter campaign to bring back the 200 teenage Nigerian girls kidnapped by Boko Haram. But the voices from the abyss are far greater than that — just as they were with the Jews in World War II. • In Syria, since 2011, 76,000 civilians have died at the hands of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad; 130,000 combatants have died — more than 206,000 people in all. • More than 3 million Syrians

have fled their homeland, left the country as refugees. • An estimated 6.5 million Syrians are “internally displaced.” • In Iraq, the Think Progress website reported in mid-March, since ISIS warned Christians in August that they could convert, pay extra taxes or be killed, ISIS has massacred and enslaved thousands of Yazidi faithful and razed their villages and killed hundreds who belong to the Shabak religious minority. • At one time, there were 1.5 million Christians in Iraq; today, most have fled. • In Nigeria, Boko Haram in 2014 murdered 6,350 civilians. • In January, it massacred 2,000 people in just one day. • As many as 1.5 million Nigerians have been displaced. And then there are these smaller, individual, but telling stories from the abyss: • Last month, I heard the American Jewish Committee’s Brussels bureau chief talk about how her grandfather will no longer go to synagogue in Copenhagen because he believes walking to its front door makes him a marked man. AJC’s representative in Paris told an interviewer: For many Jews in Paris “everyday life has become a nightmare. Tiny decisions every day are an act of

courage — taking the children to school, going to temple, going to the kosher supermarket. These are all acts of courage.” • A few Sundays ago, in Stamford Hill, London, a drunken mob of 20 thugs shouted “Kill the Jews” as they stormed a synagogue, smashing windows and attacking worshippers inside. • In Sarasota, a Jewish philanthropist told a group attending an American Jewish Committee dinner last month how his granddaughter recently was part of a group of Jewish Americans visiting Holocaust sites in Poland. He said she and her group were subjected to being spat upon — because they were Jews. And a month or so ago, a No one heeded the Jewish voices from the abyss. imam and a mob of male thugs. They had their rifles slung over their shoulders and many of them were taking videos of the whole scene with their smartphones. For two minutes, the imam ranted to the mob of the woman’s sins. And then they ordered her to her knees. Suddenly, a man standing next to the imam pulled out his pistol, held the barrel on top of the woman’s head and pulled the trigger. She was executed on the spot in front of the mob. No one reacted in horror. These were the scenes 75 years ago in Nazi Germany. No one heeded the Jewish voices from the abyss. Today, it appears, almost no one is heeding the Jewish, Christian and Muslim voices from the abyss. The parallels of history are remarkable.

Q +A WITH SUSAN PHILLIPS nah, Ga., and Jacksonville. Everybody in town thought he was nuts. When he paid the boat off , he built another one and built another successful business. He built a seafood dock and a processing facility and started Phillips Seafood. Then he opened an 800-seat Pelican Seafood Restaurant years later, and I spent 12 years managing it.

Kurt Schultheis

Susan Phillips has been a Longboat Key resident since 1998.

A

ssistant to the Town Manager Susan Phillips has sat through more Longboat Key Town Commission meetings (17 years’ worth and counting) than any commissioner and has handled agendas and itineraries of two town managers (not including the 15 days she spent in the role). A Key resident since 1998, Phillips has immersed herself in the town’s two largest civic groups on the island — the Longboat Key Garden Club as its new president and the Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key as its second vice president. She organized the first Dinner and a Movie event held April 24, at the Longboat Key Club, which raised $8,000 for both groups’ scholarships for area students.

Q: How did you end up on Longboat Key? A: I married a guy who brought me to the Key to live in January 1998. We lived on a boat near the Buccaneer Inn, and I had my first meal on the island at that inn. Q: What would people be surprised to know about your upbringing? A: I grew up in the middle of nowhere in Jessup, Ga., where my daddy, Mike Phillips, had a lucrative feed mill company. One day, he decided he wanted to build a shrimping boat, and we moved to a 4-acre area on the coast that sits between Savan-

Q: How did you become assistant to the town manager? A: I applied for a temp job at Town Hall and started off working half my time as a receptionist and half my time as (former town manager) Bruce St. Denis’ second assistant in his office. When he consolidated to one assistant, I applied. I told Bruce I ran an 800-seat restaurant, and if you can run that, you can help run a town because in the end it’s all about customer service and treating people right. Q: You served as acting town manager for 15 days in October 2011. What was that period like? A: Surreal. We were also without a planning director at the time, and that department is not my background. We also had a new Publix project going on and the Key Club project issues. And I had to start an investigation into what happened with (former planning director) Monica Simpson. I appreciated the commission trusted me with their town. Q: What’s the longest commission meeting you ever sat through? A: Probably a seven-hour work-

shop. But the longest I was ever at Town Hall was past midnight with Bruce St. Denis and (former finance director) Tom Kelley to get an agenda out for a revised $16 million beach referendum. We were all so tired Bruce started playing his ukulele in the hallway. And he was terrible. Q: Do you have a favorite commissioner with whom you’ve worked? A: No. I love them all. But Jim Patterson, the two-star general, stands out as amazing and funny. John Redgrave reminded me of my daddy. He was kind and sweet. Everybody knows former mayor Jim Brown is my best friend and officiated my wedding. And how can you leave out Hal Lenobel? He made me laugh. Q: What’s the key to keeping a town manager happy? A: Managing his time and schedule so he’s spending his time wisely and can address the most pressing issues. Q: What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen at Town Hall? A: After a referendum failed that would have given commissioners a $4,800 annual salary to help pay for their expenses, Bruce and I came up with this idea to make T-shirts that read, “I’m a LBK commissioner and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.” They were good sports and took a picture with their shirts on. — KURT SCHULTHEIS

Town of Longboat Key ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS The Town of Longboat Key is accepting applications for appointment to the following:

PLANNING & ZONING BOARD All applications must be submitted to the Office of the Town Clerk by noon (12:00 p.m.) on May 11, 2015. Late applications may not be accepted.

Vote ‘yes’ on Key Club referendum Dear Editor: Two letters in your paper last week urged residents to vote “no” on the Longboat Key Club referendum. According to the letter-writers, approval of the referendum would permit 300 additional units to be built on Longboat Key – 300 units more than what is already allowed. This is totally incorrect. The owners of the Longboat Key Club already have the right to build 300 residential units on their property. The choice is not between 300 new, additional units and no units. The choice is between 300 residential units and 300 tourism units. If the referendum is defeated, it is inconceivable that Ocean Properties, the owners of the Key Club, will not build the 300 units they already have the right to build. So which type of unit is better for Longboat Key and for someone like me, a permanent resident? It makes sense to me, as Ocean Properties points out, that tourists in a full-service resort tend to spend less time in their cars than local residents do: Tourists who come to a beach resort like the Key Club, with its extensive tennis, golf and dining facilities, are spending a lot of money for their experience and do not want to, or need to, spend their time on the road. But even aside from this consideration, tourism units are of major value to Longboat Key. They bring in visitors who may decide to buy here, and that helps all of us who own property. I understand that people are upset over the traffic situation, and I agree that traffic this past winter was the worst I have seen. I, too, want something done to deal with this problem. However, it makes no sense to vote on the Key Club referendum on the basis of fury over the traffic situation. The traffic problems are regionwide and must be dealt with on a regionwide basis. Gulf of Mexico Drive is a state highway, as are most major highways in Sarasota County, and officials at the state, regional and local levels need to act together to solve our traffic problems. I have no stake in the Long-

Dear Editor: My congratulations on a fine and very insightful editorial, “The Parallels of History.” A strong defense of our American freedoms and all that we hold dear can only come from a stronger offense. In that, the current occupant of the White House is seriously lacking to the great peril not only of our way of life, but that of our only true ally and only true democracy in the Middle East, Israel. Capitulating to Iran, our avowed enemy and scourge of the earth, makes him lethal to the free world. Welcome to the new world of nuclear proliferation. We are dealing with a world situation that we have not seen since the 1930s. Evil unchecked only emboldens even more evil and aggression. We see this coming not only from the Middle East and Africa but from our red button “reset friend,” Comrade Putin. We see China’s aggressive tactics in the East and South China seas threatening territories claimed by Japan, Vietnam and others and in its support for Syria and Iran. We see saber rattling by North Korea against South Korea and eventually other nations as it continues to build more nuclear weapons and better delivery systems. By not holding our ground as the free world’s protectorate since World War II we have encouraged evil to proliferate around the world and are facing exploding nuclear proliferation in the Middle East and perhaps in Japan as countries that can no longer count on the United States for protection must tend to their own protection and form new alliances. Regrettably, America has elected a multidecade sympathizer and member of Jeremiah Wright’s church of “God Damn America.” Therein lies his hatred and downplay of Christianity and Judaism. Hope and change has turned into hate and hostility, if there was indeed any hint of hope and change to begin with in any understandable form for the America most people love. MILAN V. Sea turtles enter nesting mode on Longboat KRISTEN HERHOLD STAFF WRITER

As the snowbirds of Longboat flock home, new island residents will swim in to take their place: turtles. Turtle nesting season begins May 1 and continues through October. Each year turtles lay more than 2,000 nests from Longboat Key to Venice. Last year’s season was especially active with 2,461 nests — just eight nests fewer than the recordhigh nesting season of 2012. Nesting season, however, wouldn’t be successful without the help of volunteers with Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium and Longboat Key Turtle Watch. Currently, 324 volunteers work with Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program, and 30 work with Longboat Key Turtle Watch. Every morning, volunteers patrol beaches to look for turtle tracks and nests. “We usually have two to four people walking about a mile and a half,” Turtle Watch Vice President Cyndi Seamon said. “It’s camaraderie. People get to know people with like-minded interests. Everyone has to go through a training process.”

FIRST LBK NEST Nesting season came a few days early for three turtles. Although nesting season doesn’t officially begin until May 1, the first local sea turtle nests of 2015 were found along the 35 miles from Longboat Key to Venice. The first nest was found April 25 on Siesta Key, and the second nest was found April 27 in Venice. The first nest on Longboat Key was documented on the morning of April 28 on the beaches outside Sand Cay Beach Resort.

Residents and visitors must do their parts as well. “People need to know to turn out the lights on the beach and to close their drapes,” Seamon said. “If you’re a little turtle coming out of the nest and see the building with the lights on, which way will you go? You’d go toward the light. Our disorientation rates are pretty high, and that’s not something to be proud of.” On Longboat Key, 30% of

hatchlings experienced disorientation last year. Disorientation rates were 32% on Lido Key, 20% on Siesta Key, 15% in Venice and 3% on Casey Key. “Disorientations are caused by artificial lighting,” said Hayley Rutger, public relations manager at Mote. “Sea turtles normally head toward the brightest horizon to reach the sea, and on a natural beach, the ocean horizon is brightest, but the turtles can head in the wrong direction and potentially into harm’s way if artificial lights are visible from the beach or if inland artificial lights are creating sky glow.” Seamon said the people who don’t follow protocol are typically those who aren’t familiar with it. “Property managers are really, really good and understand it,” Seamon said. “Some of the new homeowners or hotel guests have never been exposed to it, so if there’s a new house the developer or builder will educate them a little bit.” Hatchlings aren’t the only turtles affected by bright lights. False crawls among nesting turtles are also common. “A false crawl happens when an adult female sea turtle crawls up the beach to nest but returns to the ocean without leaving a nest,” Rutger said. “A turtle may false crawl if she is disturbed by people, lights or obstacles on the beach, such as furniture. That means it’s very important to give turtles their space and keep beaches clear of obstacles.” The majority of nests in the area

are laid by loggerhead turtles, but occasionally green sea turtles and Kemp’s ridley sea turtles nest on local beaches. Hatchlings reach sexual maturity at approximately 25 years and will return to the same beach on which they hatched to nest themselves. Mature female loggerhead turtles return to nest every two to three years. “Most people I talk to are fascinated by sea turtles, and Florida has 90% of the world’s population of loggerheads,” Seamon said. “The cool thing is that we get to share the beach with this amazing sea turtle that’s been around for millions of years and has been doing this thing for millions of years.”

DO: n If you encounter a nesting turtle, observe from a distance and remain quiet. n Shield or turn off all outdoor lights that are visible from the beach. n Close the drapes after dark and stack beach furniture at the dune line or, ideally, remove it from the beach. n Fill in holes that may trap hatchlings on their way to the water. n Put trash in its proper place. DON’T: n Approach nesting turtles or hatchlings, make noise or shine lights at the turtles. n Use flashlights or fishing lamps on the beach. n Pick up hatchlings that have emerged and are heading for the water. n Encourage a turtle to move while nesting. n Use fireworks on the beach. — Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

Larry Cohen reigned as Sleep King

Fedder cultivated passion for the environment KRISTEN HERHOLD STAFF WRITER

KRISTEN HERHOLD STAFF WRITER

In his famous Sleep King ad from 1983, Larry Cohen offered free two-hour naps and proclaimed he would get you your mattress on the same day, even if he had to deliver it on his back. He never changed the ad. “It’s the same ad that has run for years and years,” his brother, Eliot Cohen, said. “A lot of people think it’s his son. People would go into a restaurant and say, ‘Are you the guy on television?’ and they would be excited they just met the guy from television.” His dedication to the business continued more than three decades later. In recent years, Cohen had been vision-impaired, but he remained devoted to his shop and showed up to work — even when someone had to pick him up and drive him there. “He was very involved with Sleep King, no matter what,” Sleep King Office Manager Del Coyle said. “He loved to work. He loved to be here.” Cohen, of Longboat Key, who founded Sleep King, died April 16. He was 78. Cohen’s retail experience went back to his childhood, when his family owned a children’s toy and furniture store. Beginning in 1972, Cohen operated a chain of retail mattress stores in Boston, named Sleep King.

Larry Cohen

He moved to the area from Boston in 1980 while vacationing on the Key. He visited the Columbia Restaurant the day before he was set to leave. There, he laid eyes on Judy Dear and never returned to Boston. When he moved down to the area, he opened a Sarasota store on South Tamiami Trail. “He was a real hands-on boss,” Eliot Cohen said. “The name Larry Cohen and Sleep King became synonymous.” In addition to his devotion to his mattress store, Cohen also had a passion for charitable work. Cohen supported the Cat Depot, Salvation Army, Jewish Family and Children’s Services and Sarasota youth sports. He also donated Sleep King trucks to the All Faiths Food Bank to carry donated food, and he donated mattresses to the Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC). “He was the type to take a homeless person and give them food and shelter and a job,” Eliot

Cohen said. “That’s just the person he was.” Cohen’s friends, family and loved ones won’t just remember him for his corporate and philanthropic legacy. Rather, they will remember his kind personality and sunny disposition. “He was just a very outgoing person,” Coyle said. “He was very well-liked.” One of Cohen’s final wishes was for Sleep King to continue to thrive for years to come. “The business is continuing with his loyal, loyal employees,” Eliot Cohen said. “He didn’t want the business to close, and he didn’t want Sleep King and the Sleep King name to end with his demise. He was getting young people whose grandparents bought from him. He didn’t want that to go down the drain.” Cohen was preceded in death by his partner, Judy Dear, who died in September. He is survived by his brothers, Eliot, of Fort Lauderdale, and Burton, of Los Angeles; and two nieces.

to provide more funding for the Fedder Scholars Program and the Fedder Environmental Law Lecture and Dinner. “Instead of giving parts of a fund, we decided we wanted to do something that really made a difference, so we set up the endowment,” Ellen Fedder said. At the couple’s Baltimore home, Fedder tended to a greenhouse; his love for botany continued on the Key. He was especially passionate about the garden at their home, which was inspired by the serene Japanese and Balinese gardens, complete with Buddha statues and bonsai trees. “He wanted this from the time we moved in, and it was only finished about four to five months ago. Every time I walk outside, it brings tears to my eyes because he got to see it before he passed away,” Ellen Fedder said. Fedder also served on the board of the Sarasota Opera. “The official definition of a Renaissance Man, I believe, was my husband,” Ellen Fedder said. Fedder is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ellen; children Michael, of Bedford, N.H., and Amy, of Baltimore; sister, Sue; and four grandchildren.

Joel Fedder spent his career in Baltimore as an estate, trust and real estate lawyer and, later, a real estate developer, but his true passion was the environment. “He didn’t just know common names of the plant, but he knew the botanical names of every plant well too,” Fedder’s wife, Ellen, said. Fedder, a philanthropist and avid supporter of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, died April 18. He was 83. Fedder began work with Selby in 1995, after moving to the Key, and served on its board of trustees from 1998 to 2003. “He was certainly very generous to Selby Gardens,” Selby President and CEO Jennifer Rominiecki said. “He made repeated gifts to support science lectures at the garden, and he had a personal interest in the garden and delivered a lecture about global warming in 2014.” Born in Baltimore, Fedder graduated in 1950 from the Friends School in Baltimore and received his bachelor’s degree in 1954 from Goddard College. He began his law career in 1958 after graduating from the University of Maryland School of Law. He practiced law until 1985, when he decided to become a real estate developer. “He kept reinventing himself,” said Lenny Landau, Fedder’s neighbor and friend. “He was a lawyer and then got into real estate and became very successful at that. He became an advocate for the arts and a climatechange scholar.” Fedder supported the University of Maryland School of Law and founded the Fedder Environmental Fund. Last year, the Fedders donated $1 million to the school

Above: A rendering of the proposed development area.

1. What is the purpose of the referendum? The referendum is not asking for any new density. It would simply allow 300 tourism units to replace 300 units of existing residential density. 2. What will be the impact on traffic? Studies show that resort hotel guests use fewer vehicles and make fewer trips per day than permanent residents. 3. Why would the tourist units be good for our community? Most residents of Longboat Key were visitors to Longboat Key prior to purchasing real estate. Tourism has been an essential key to increasing real estate values and a strong year-round economy on Longboat Key. 4. How would tourism units benefit our community?

A STRONGER COMMUNITY Proposed improvements to the Longboat Key Club will ensure that the property remains a first-class destination for discerning visitors for years to come. This will create a sustainable year-round balance of residential and tourism units for a stronger community with property values reflecting this strength. A STRONGER TAX BASE A strong tax base in the non-residential sector allows lower millage rates, lower taxes for residents, and quality public services like fire, ambulance, parks and public safety. FEWER VEHICLES Studies show that resort hotel guests use fewer vehicles and make fewer trips per day than permanent residents.

The hotel complex and development will help provide a strong tax base in the non-residential sector which allows lower millage rates, lower taxes for residents, and quality public services like fire, ambulance, parks and public safety.

But they weren’t playing golf; they were enjoying a dinner and a movie. After a gourmet dinner prepared by Key Club chefs and a putting competition, guests received a golf cart to use for the drive-in movie experience. The movie was “Tin Cup,” which

stars Kevin Costner and Renee Russo. In addition to dinner and the movie, there was also a raffle and silent auction. The grand raffle prize was a VIP trip for two to the U.S. Open Golf Championship in University Park, Wash. The silent auction included memorabilia signed by golfers Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer and a portrait session with Mary Lou Johnson. This was the first joint fundraiser held by the Garden Club and Kiwanis Club, and the $8,000 raised from the event will go toward the clubs’ scholarship and grant funds, which help local students and nonprofit organizations. “The weather is great; we’ve had a great turnout, and people are having fun. What more could you ask for?” said event coordinator Susan Phillips, who is Garden Club president and Kiwanis Club scholarship chairwoman.

Summer stretch a first for Bayfront Park yoga classes

Peter Acker

MOLLY SCHECHTER CONTRBUTING WRITER

I

t was more than a little bit of good luck for year-round residents of Longboat Key and the surrounding area when the former Debby Debile married Michael McClung in 2014 and moved here, because Debby McClung is a Yoga Alliance E-RYT 200 certified yoga teacher who will teach at the town’s Bayfront Park Recreation Center this summer. I have been teaching yoga there for pushing 20 years but never in the summer, when I want to be free to travel and many, if not most, of my students retreat northward. So this is a genuine fitness first for the Key. McClung may be new to Longboat, but she has a long history in fitness and education. Her exercise roots go back to the 1980s and what she calls “my pink leotard and leg warmer days.” She studied and sweated with Jane Fonda in San Francisco, then taught high-impact aerobics and other classes in 10 karate studios that she managed for her then-boyfriend in

Jacksonville. Next came 20 years of management and teaching at Sports Plex in Neptune Beach. Along the way, she started her own personal training business called “Girls Just Wanna Workout.” She saw clients in the homes of hardworking businesswomen (only) after she finished her day job of managing other fitness instructors and teaching her own classes. And she traveled as a choreography presenter for other aerobic instructors. “Sixteen cities in 16 days — big fun!” she says. Her son was born in 1990, and when he was in second grade, she had an epiphany that she was meant to work with young kids. That sent her back to college, where she completed her degree and became an elementary school teacher for kindergarten through second grade. McClung was teaching yoga part-time the entire time. And she was studying, as evidenced by her E-RYT credential. RYT is an abbreviation for Registered Yoga Teacher established by the Yoga Alliance, the largest nonprofit association representing the yoga community. The 200 represents the number of class hours and the “E” indicates significant teaching experience — in McClung’s case, 13 years. McClung has done not one but two 200-hour RYT courses. The first was in 2011 in Jacksonville Beach with Joyce Savitz, who has been teaching for 35 years and is

BRUCE MYER

also a licensed massage therapist. That program took a year to complete. McClung’s second 200-hour program was a onemonth intensive in Nicaragua with teacher-trainer Kimberly Waugh. “We lived and breathed yoga for 30 days; I loved it,” McClung says. Both her teachers practiced Anusara yoga, a gentle, modern, anatomically up-to-date method created in the 1990s. McClung has evolved and branded her own method as “Feel Good Yoga.” She describes it as a gentle, softer approach that encourages her students to reach a calm, relaxing space and experience their kinder, gentler aspects. Her classes have a classic flow. They typically start seated with two to three minutes of getting quiet and centered, eyes closed, ears softened to “listen not just to the outside sounds but what’s going on inside the head,” McClung says. A joint warmup follows, in which participants move their wrists, elbows, shoulders and lower body joints. The body of the class includes forward bends, the warrior series and other postures to help students find space and freedom of movement. She finishes with 10 to 15 minutes of savasana, or final relaxation. McClung’s Bayfront Park Rec Center classes will be at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning May 19. Cost is $10 for Recreation Center members; $15

Molly Schechter is an ACEcertified personal trainer with a specialty in older-adult fitness plus YogaFit Instructor Training, SCF Yoga Fundamentals I and II and Power Pilates™ Mat Certifications. She teaches classes at the Bayfront Park Recreation Center.
