Swakop resident busted for drugs at Nonidas smallholdings Floris Steenkamp
A Swakopmund man fell victim to a scammer recently, moments after he has been arrested by the Namibian Police at the Nonidas smallholdings for drug possession. Giliam Swiegers was accosted by the police at 16:00 on 2 April at the Okakamba smallholding at Nonidas where 12 pieces of crack cocaine, mandrax tablets and three cannabis seeds were found in his posses-sion. Shortly after Swiegers' arrest he received a phone call by a male person claiming to be employed by namib times. The person explained he is a reporter of the newspaper and at a cash payment he would prevent the event of his [Swiegers'] drug arrest publicised. Relatives of Swiegers complained at namib times management. Regarding the matter as very high in importance namib times after a brief inquiry informed the relatives of Swiegers the claim he was phoned by any staff member of the newspaper was baseless. Swiegers had to concede he was victim to a scammer who used his arrest as a platform to extort money from him. The newspaper offers its full cooperation with any future investigation into the matter. That would include compulsory lie detector tests to all employees and also selected former employees if the need arises. Members of the public are warned never to react on phone calls. In almost all instances scammers are using cell phone conversations to lure their victims, as they are at risk of being identified if meeting their intended victims in person. Whether you are called by people claiming to be police officers who inform you there is a criminal case against you, but that it could be made to disappear if you pay a cash sum or whether it is people claiming to be corrupt reporter - don't be fooled. Insist to meet the person, insist to meet the police officers at the police station, as scammers have an endless supply of ideas how to try and part you with your hard earned cash.
