Red-Light Gum Therapy
Approximately 3 million Americans receive dental implant procedures annually. Unlike natural teeth, implants do not form a seamless seal with the surrounding gum tissue, posing a potential risk of infection. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are working to develop a new implant that mitigates this concern via a twofold defense.
The first defense involves creating the crown to include antimicrobial compounds, currently barium titanate, to effectively combat bacterial growth.
The second line of defense entails embedding light-emitting diodes (LEDs) onto the base of the crown to deliver immune-boosting, red-light therapy to the surrounding gum area. To eliminate the need for a battery, the implant generates its own electricity via the crown’s specialized material, such as the barium titanate, which converts motion—such as chewing—to electrical energy. Although barium titanate is not as strong as the materials currently used for implants, the research team is working on enhancing its properties. The product will be tested in pigs in 2025, paving the way for human trials.
Aging in Bursts
Suddenly feeling old may not be our imagination. A recent study published in Nature Aging examined the molecular changes of 108 adults between the ages of 25 and 75. The participants were tracked for a median of 1.7 years, with a maximum of 6.8 years, during which biological samples were collected and evaluated every three to six months from a range of sources, including the blood, stool, skin, mouth and nasal passages.
The researchers compared the samples obtained from participants at different ages and observed that people seemed to age more rapidly at age 44 and again at age 60. The changes at age 44 were mostly related to fat and alcohol metabolism, as well as an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. The changes at age 60 related mostly to immune dysfunction and carbohydrate metabolism. According to Stanford Medicine Professor Michael Snyder, these findings might explain why people seem to have more trouble processing alcohol starting in their 40s and become more prone to illness in their 60s.
A New Definition of Obesity
To diagnose obesity, medical professionals primarily rely on body mass index (BMI), a calculation that estimates the percentage of body fat based on a ratio comparing height to weight. Seeking a more nuanced and precise approach, The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology assembled a commission comprised of 56 leading experts from various disciplines, including nutrition, endocrinology, internal medicine and public health, to reevaluate the definition and measurement of obesity.
The commission found that BMI tends to both underestimate and overestimate obesity. For instance, individuals that are stocky and muscular may be erroneously classified as obese due to the weight of muscle tissue, while those with low muscle mass but excess abdominal fat around their organs may not be considered obese.
The commission recommends a revised definition of obesity that emphasizes excess body fat accumulation around the waist, measuring waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio or waist-to-height ratio, in conjunction with BMI. Alternatively, a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan can be employed to directly measure body fat using low-radiation X-ray capabilities at a higher cost.
In an interview with NPR News, Dr. Robert Kushner, a member of the commission, explained the significance of abdominal fat, stating, “Fat in the belly causes systemic inflammation, which then goes on and causes other metabolic problems like elevated blood sugar, elevated blood pressure and increased fats in the blood.”
The commission also recommended making a distinction between preclinical and clinical obesity. Individuals with clinical obesity would exhibit diminished organ or tissue function due to obesity or substantial mobility limitations. Consequently, they would receive appropriate treatments for their condition. Individuals with preclinical obesity would undergo health counseling and monitoring to reduce the risk of developing clinical obesity.
Common Podiatrist Foot Health Conditions
by Dr. Roman E. Finn
Foot pain can greatly affect our quality of life, from minor discomfort to severe, debilitating conditions. When mobility is impaired or discomfort becomes chronic, it is essential to get professional assistance. A skilled podiatrist can help avoid, identify and treat a variety of foot and ankle problems regardless of age, level of activity or amount of time spent on our feet.
Plantar Fasciitis: One of the most common causes of heel pain is brought on by inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot. Symptoms include sharp heel pain, especially in the morning; swelling; and pain that worsens with activity. To lessen inflammation, a podiatrist may suggest physical therapy, corticosteroid injections or custom orthotics. Minimally invasive surgery may be recommended in extreme circumstances. Patients will obtain a customized care plan for long-term relief from a respectable podiatry treatment center.
Bunions: This bony lump that develops on the big toe’s base joint might run in families, or is frequently caused by wearing tight shoes. Symptoms include redness and swelling around the large toe joint; pain when walking; and visible deformity of the foot. A bunion’s severity can be assessed by a podiatrist that can also recommend non-surgical and surgical solutions. Orthotic devices, footwear changes and bunion pads are nonsurgical treatments.
Heel Spurs: The bony protrusions on the underside of the heel bone are caused by calcium deposits and are frequently associated with plantar fasciitis. Symptoms include
intermittent or chronic heel pain; inflammation; and difficulty walking or standing. Diagnostic imaging at a specialized podiatry treatment center verifies the existence of heel spurs. Stretching exercises, personalized orthotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and in extreme circumstances, surgery, are all possible forms of treatment.
Flat Feet: When the arches of the feet give way, the entire sole touches the ground, resulting in flat feet. Symptoms include foot fatigue; pain in the arch or heel; and ankle swelling. Podiatric services provide help using specialized orthotic devices and gait analysis. Early intervention can occasionally treat a child’s condition without the need for surgery.
Athlete’s Foot: Usually beginning between the toes, this fungal infection can spread if treatment is not received. Symptoms include itching; burning; and cracked or peeling skin.
After diagnosing the infection, a podiatrist will recommend oral or topical antifungal drugs, as well as hygiene advice to avoid repeat breakouts.
Ankle Sprains and Fractures: Injuries to the ankle’s ligaments or bones can be brought on by sports, falls or collisions. Symptoms include swelling and bruising; sharp pain; and an inability to bear weight. Following an imaging diagnosis, physical therapy, surgery or immobilization may be used as treatments. Along with a comprehensive treatment plan.

The Power of Restorative Sleep for Men
General well-being has long been the focus of the sleep discussion, but it is time to focus on the benefits of restorative sleep specifically for males, ranging from raising testosterone levels to improving emotional fortitude. Good sleep is essential for the creation of testosterone, the healing of muscles, mental clarity and emotional equilibrium. These processes can break down in the absence of sufficient restorative sleep. Getting enough sleep promotes a healthy metabolism, healthier eating habits and increased stamina for physical activity.
Hormonal Balance and Testosterone Levels: Hormone modulation is one of the most important physiological effects of sleep on males. The main male sex hormone, testosterone, is mostly produced when we sleep, especially while deep in non-REM sleep. Research indicates that limiting sleep by just five hours a night for a week can reduce testosterone levels throughout the day by as much as 15 percent.
Men’s health is impacted by low testosterone in several ways, including reduced libido, increased body fat, decreased muscle mass, fatigue, mood swings and irritability. men need restorative sleep to maintain their manhood and hormonal balance, not only to feel refreshed.
Heart Health and Blood Pressure Regulation: Sleep is essential for preventing cardiovascular disease, one of the top causes of death for males. Blood pressure drops, the heart rate slows and the body goes through crucial repair processes while we sleep. These cycles are upset by inadequate or poorquality sleep, which results in Elevated blood pressure, Inflammation and Increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Less than six
hours of sleep every night increases the risk of hypertension and coronary artery disease in men, particularly if they also have chronic snoring or sleep apnea.
Mental Health and Emotional Regulation: Men are frequently taught by society to repress their feelings, yet the brain is not culturally compliant. REM sleep is crucial for psychological stability because it is when emotional processing takes place. Long-term sleep deprivation can cause heightened stress and anxiety, irritability and anger issues, increased risk of depression and impaired decision-making and impulse control. The body uses sleep as an emotional reset button for males who are balancing work-related stress, family responsibilities, and social expectations.
Cognitive Function and Memory: Sleep improves the ability to think, focus, be creative and solve problems. The brain purges toxins, solidifies memories and prepares for peak performance the following day during the deep and REM phases. Regularly sleep-deprived men frequently report brain fog and forgetfulness, slower reaction times, reduced productivity and focus, and impaired judgment. Investing in restorative sleep is just as
important for students, business owners and professionals men as staying on top of their responsibilities.
Immune Function and Disease Prevention: Certain illnesses such as respiratory infections, liver disease and heart disease are more common in men. The immune system is weakened by little sleep, leaving the body more vulnerable to disease. Less than six hours of sleep per night has been linked to a higher risk of colds, longer sickness duration and a slower rate of recovery from injuries or surgeries, according to studies. Men’s immunity is strengthened by restorative sleep due to enhancing the production of infectionfighting cytokines, allowing proper T-cell activity and reducing systemic inflammation.
Weight Regulation and Metabolic Health: Metabolism and sleep are closely related. Leptin and ghrelin, two hunger hormones, are frequently disrupted in men that lack sleep, which increases desires and causes overeating. The consequences include weight gain and obesity, insulin resistance and higher risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Work-Life Balance Tips for Men
It is not necessary to divide time equally between our personal and professional lives to achieve work-life balance. It means learning to manage our energy, set boundaries and prioritize values. Whether climbing the corporate ladder, providing for a family or staying competitive in a constantly evolving work environment, the pressure can lead to significant stress. Without conscious strategies to manage it, the result can be burnout and chronic fatigue. Be flexible; what works in one season of life may not work in another.
Set Clear Boundaries Between Work and Home: If we work from home, avoid blurring the lines between personal and professional life. Designate a specific room or area for work only. Do not let work emails or calls creep into evenings or weekends. Let an employer or team know when we are off the clock to prevent expectations of constant availability.
Prioritize Physical Health: Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep per night without
interruption. Avoid overdependence on fast food and processed snacks. Eat balanced meals that support energy levels. Even a 30-minute walk or a quick workout can dramatically reduce fatigue and stress.
Invest in Mental Health: Therapy is a resource, not a sign of weakness. Consulting with a mental health practitioner is beneficial for many men. Just 10 minutes a day of meditation can reset the nervous system and build emotional resilience. Engage in activities that stimulate us intellectually, but are not related to work. Consider chess, music, reading or creative writing.
Over-Commitment Equals Stress: Stop saying “yes” to tasks that drain our energy or do not align with our priorities. Use polite but firm language, such as, “I’d love to help, but I’m currently at capacity,” as a professional way to maintain boundaries.
Embrace Digital Detoxing: Avoid phones and laptops at least one hour before sleeping. Dedicate part of the day, perhaps during
meals or weekends, to being offline. Instead of receiving constant notifications, use technology to enhance, not control, our life.
Cultivate Relationships Outside of Work:
Make time for family dinners, game nights with friends or regular phone calls to loved ones. Find groups to openly share struggles and hear about other experiences. This promotes accountability and a feeling of community.
Take Breaks Without Guilt: Step away from screens every hour for five to 10 minutes to recharge. Do not hoard vacation days. Rest is not a reward; it is a requirement. Avoid overscheduling weekends and use at least part of it to unwind, reflect and reset. Use monthly self-check-ins to reflect upon what is working and what is not. Talk with a spouse, friends or mentors to gain perspective on whether we are stretching ourselves too thin.

Exploring Dreams in Psychotherapy from a Gestalt Perspective
by Svetlana Kasyan
Dreams have long fascinated humanity, offering a glimpse into the inner workings of the mind. In psychotherapy, dreams are more than nighttime curiosities; they are valuable doorways into the unconscious, often revealing hidden emotions, unresolved conflicts and creative potential. While Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung laid the foundational framework for dream analysis in the early 20th century, contemporary approaches such as Gestalt psychotherapy bring a fresh and experiential lens to working with dreams.
Freud, often considered the father of psychoanalysis, viewed dreams as the “royal road to the unconscious.” He believed that they disguise repressed wishes, often of a sexual or aggressive nature, through symbolic imagery. The goal of Freud’s dream analysis was to uncover the latent content (hidden psychological meaning) masked behind the dreams’ manifest content, or surface narrative. Through interpretation, Freud sought to make the unconscious conscious, allowing repressed material to be processed and integrated.
Carl Jung, once Freud’s protégé, diverged in his understanding of dreams. Rather than seeing them as disguises of forbidden desires, Jung believed dreams were direct expressions of the unconscious, offering guidance and balance to the psyche. His concept of archetypes (universal symbols found across cultures and myths) played a central role
in his dream work. Jungian dream analysis often seeks to explore personal and collective symbolism, aiming for individuation, or the integration of the self.
While both Freud and Jung emphasized interpretation, Gestalt psychotherapy takes a different path. Developed by Fritz Perls, Gestalt therapy sees dreams not as puzzles to decode, but as existential messages arising from the dreamer’s present experience. Rather than analyzing dreams from a theoretical distance, Gestalt therapy engages the dreamer directly in an experiential process.
In Gestalt dream work, each element of the dream (a person, object, or even a landscape) is viewed as a projection of the self. The dream is brought into the present moment and the dreamer is invited to embody different parts of the dream through role play or dialogue. For example, a client might switch chairs and speak from the perspective of a storm, a tree or a stranger in the dream. This process helps uncover emotions, internal conflicts or unmet needs that are not easily accessible through waking awareness.
The power of Gestalt dream work lies in its immediacy and depth. Instead of interpreting from the outside, the therapist facilitates the client’s own exploration, allowing meanings to emerge organically. This method encourages self-awareness, emotional expression and integration, often leading to powerful insights and healing experiences.
Working with dreams in Gestalt therapy respects the unique and creative language of the unconscious. It treats the dream not as something to solve, but as something to live. In this way, Gestalt psychotherapy honors the mystery of dreams while grounding them in the tangible, transformative work of the here and now.

Your Vibrational Frequency is Key to Optimal Health
by Dr. Anne Deatly
What’s your vibrational frequency? This is a great question if you’re on a path to optimal health. You can monitor the level of your health by your vibrational frequency. The higher your frequency, the better your health and life. Disease doesn’t exist in a body vibrating at a high frequency. You can assess your vibrational frequency by how happy, peaceful, loving you are and how positive or negative your thoughts and feelings.
If you have 60,000 thoughts per day, the accepted number, what percentage are positive? What percentage are negative? The answers are critical because they relate to your vibrational frequency. Are you loving and inspiring to yourself or self-critical or self-deprecating? What you believe about yourself matters to your vibrational frequency and your health. Do you love what you do and are you inspired by it?
Do you spend more time focusing on the past or the present? Do you spend more time focusing on what you don’t want—your problems, or more time focusing on what you do want in your life?
Did you know we are living in a conscious universe which is a living dynamic field that is sentient and intelligent? Our mind-thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, integrate into the flow
of universal consciousness creating specific events, people, and opportunities. Everything is energy.
The vibrational frequency of energy we transmit is the same vibrational frequency we receive. This wisdom is the Universal Law of Energy and Vibration. The Law of Attraction is a subsidiary of this law. What you transmit energetically to the universe returns to you, the origin. When you understand this, you’ll understand a major physics principle of the universe. Scientifically, it couldn’t happen any other way. Who we are being is what we receive back from the universe. We create our own opportunities by what we think, feel,
believe and how we act. We really create our lives through the universal energy or consciousness.
In my new book, Journey to True Self: Discover Your Divine Magnificence, I explain that changing our perception of ourselves and the world around us will raise our vibrational frequency. If we change our thoughts by “seeing” through a loving lens and interacting in a more positive way with others, by forgiving and being in gratitude, it will raise our vibrational frequencies.
Here are five ways to raise your vibrational frequency:
• Start loving yourself and love others unconditionally. Everyone was created in unconditional love.
• Let go of past events and your problems. Understand they help you grow.
• Learn to identify yourself as a Soul rather than a physical body—your physical body is insignificant compared to your Soul.
• Learn to look for the good in others— their Soul, rather than focusing on their flaws or mistakes.
• Understand the universe is benevolent, kind, and compassionate and it works in your favor.
If you or someone you know wants to raise their vibrational frequency, please contact me at anne.deatly@ gmail.com or 201-925-1046. See ad, page 14.
Meal Planning for Men
Meal planning frequently takes a back seat when it comes to health and wellness, particularly for males balancing work, exercise objectives and family obligations. Age, degree of exercise and individual health objectives all affect nutritional requirements, but the fundamentals are always the same: for the body to operate at its best, it needs the proper balance of macronutrients (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), and water.
Heart disease, high blood pressure, excessive cholesterol and difficulties with the prostate are among the health concerns that men are more likely to have. In addition to lowering these risks, a balanced diet can increase mental clarity, promote weight reduction or muscular growth and increase vitality in general.
Lean protein is necessary for muscle growth, repair and metabolism. Generally speaking, men require more protein than women, particularly if they engage in physical activity. Best sources include
chicken breast, turkey, lean beef, fish (especially salmon and tuna for omega3s), eggs, Greek yogurt, lentils, chickpeas and tofu.
Healthy fats promote satiety, brain function and the synthesis of hormones, including testosterone. Best sources include avocados, olive oil, nuts (almonds, walnuts, pistachios), seeds (chia, flax,

Complex carbohydrates are our source of energy, not our enemy. Selecting complex, slowly digesting carbohydrates that do not cause blood sugar spikes is crucial. Best sources include sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, oats, whole-grain bread or pasta and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables should comprise a significant portion of meals because they are rich in fiber, antioxidants and vital vitamins and minerals. Eat the rainbow. Different colors equal different nutrients.
Hydration is essential for all body processes. Men that live in hot regions or are physically active should strive to drink at least a gallon of water every day.
Building the foundation in our 20s: Focus on muscle development and metabolism, including high-protein, moderate
healthy fats and complex carbs. Avoid alcohol and late-night snacking.
Maintaining energy and focus in our 30s: Increase fiber for gut health. Prioritize heart-healthy fats. Begin watching sodium and sugar intake.
Preventing health issues in our 40s: Reduce red meat and processed foods. Focus on anti-inflammatory foods (berries, leafy greens). Monitor cholesterol and blood pressure.
Longevity and vitality in our 50s and Beyond: Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D. Eat lean proteins to preserve muscle mass, as well as smaller, more frequent meals for metabolism and digestion.

A Mom at 100 Years Old
Congratulations to Mommy, a first-time mother at 100 years old, and to her mate, Abrazzo, also estimated to be around 100. Mommy is a critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoise that has lived at the Philadelphia Zoo since 1932. In November 2024, she laid 16 eggs, with the first hatching on February 27. To date, four have climbed from their shells, with more still possible. This was Mommy’s fourth egg-laying attempt and the first to result in viable offspring.
Prior to the recent hatchlings, there were only 44 Western Santa Cruz giant tortoises in American zoos. The newly hatched tortoises will be housed at the Philadelphia Zoo for a minimum of five years before any potential relocation to another facility or release into the Galapagos Islands. Scientists estimate that these tortoises may live up to 200 years, with the oldest on record documented to have lived 175 years in captivity.
Seven of the Galapagos Islands are currently home to one or more of 13 native tortoise species. Historically, each of the 21 islands had its own species, with populations numbering in the hundreds of thousands. After being hunted to near extinction, their numbers have since rebounded to approximately 17,000 with the help of conservation and breeding programs, as reported by the London Zoo.
Becoming Man’s Best Friend
A study led by a University of Arizona researcher sheds light on the interactions between Indigenous peoples in the Americas and early dogs and wolves. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, indicates that close relationships between people and ancestral dogs began in Alaska as early as 12,000 years ago, about 2,000 years earlier than previously thought. Chemical analysis of unearthed canine bones revealed that the animals regularly ate fish, suggesting a level of interaction with humans.
Declining Butterfly Population
A recent study published in the journal Science provides the most comprehensive analysis of the current state of the U.S. butterfly population. The research team combined data from 35 citizen-scientist programs across the continental U.S. that counted butterflies. Their analysis was based on 12.6 million individual butterfly sightings.
The findings reveal a concerning decline of 22 percent of our 554 butterfly species over the past two decades, affecting almost every region of the country. For every species found to have increased in population, there were 13 species that declined in population, and some of those declines were significant. While tackling climate change and regulating pesticides are crucial policy interventions, people can actively contribute to reversing these declines by creating habitat refuges for butterflies and other insects. This can be achieved by planting native flowers, shrubs and trees.

What on Earth Is “Chelation Therapy”?
by Robin Ellen Leder, M.D.
In a world filled with environmental toxins and poor behavioral and dietary habits, wouldn’t it be ideal if there were some simple and safe way to undo the accumulated impact of these negative health influences? Fortunately, there is such an approach, and it is called “chelation” (pronounced key-LAYshun.) It offers a way to reverse environmental and lifestyle damage with little downside, and considering the benefits of this therapy, it is not excessively costly. How could this antidote to the “dark side of modern civilization” be so relatively unavailable and so little known?
“Chelation” is a process by which one of several non-toxic chemical substances is introduced into the body to remove harmful minerals. One subtype of chelation introduces the substance called EDTA, often used as a preservative in food, to remove calcified plaque from blocked blood vessels. It is introduced intravenously following a very specific protocol, and carefully monitored during each session and from week to week. Each molecule of the “chelating agent” (i.e., the EDTA) has the ability to “attract” the calcium embedded into the arterial plaque, and pull it off its home on the plaque; the calcium binds to the EDTA , and is then moved through the circulatory system, proceeding through the kidneys, and is ultimately passed out of the body in the urine.
With repeated treatments, the total amount of calcific plaque is reduced, and formerly blocked vessels are opened up. Pulses that were absent or distant may return or become stronger; the circulation in such vital organs as the heart, kidneys, and brain is improved. Leg circulation, often impeded in diabetics or others with leg neuropathy, is enhanced. This type of chelation is also quite useful in maintaining flow through stents that have been surgically placed to bypass occluded (blocked) arteries, which might otherwise collect plaque over time and fail. Since the chelating IV flows through all of the circulation, it can help to reduce not only the plaque content in the larger vessels, but also the microcirculation throughout the
body where stents are too cumbersome to consider. Two different scenarios where chelation is called for: first is to reverse the presence of atherosclerotic deposits that are in present and advancing. The other is to proactively do EDTA chelation on a regular, low frequency schedule to prevent the accumulation of such plaque over the course of a lifetime. This might be especially relevant if one has a significant family history of heart disease.
The other major type of chelation therapy is the removal of toxic, so-called “heavy” metals from the body’s tissues. These metals tend to reside in the nervous system and to some extent in the gut and skin, and can lead to very serious complications in those systems. The heavy metals most often chelated include lead, mercury, arsenic, antimony, and cadmium, and well as many of the industrial toxins such as gadolinium (used in CT contrast material.) It is quite common for these metals to pervade our water supplies and other aspects of our lives, and rarely do we know that we are being intoxicated. Treatment for these metallic toxins may be oral or IV, and sometimes entails a combination of different routes. Again, treatment can be done in the setting of clear-cut, symptomatic intoxication, or can be done proactively to avoid accumulation of such metals. In the case of symptomatic patients, profound, even dramatic clinical improvement can be seen over time.
With such a powerful therapeutic tool, why is chelation therapy relatively hard to find, and not constantly used?
1It is not well known to the public or even to many physicians.
2Materials needed for the treatments have become increasingly difficult to find and purchase, and their cost has escalated greatly over the past years.
3The treatments are a bit inconvenient, often requiring a period of several patient hours in-office on at least a semi-regular basis.
4The cost of these treatments is rarely covered by insurance, and though each individual treatment is not enormously expensive, the multiple treatments needed to “make a difference” can add up. This cost, as always, must be evaluated in the context of the enormous health value of a course of treatment.
Should a course of chelation therapy of one or both of these types be incorporated into your overall health plan, or that of a friend or family member? That decision is always yours to make. A consultation with a chelating physician could provide the specific details to help you make an informed decision. But at the very least, it is important to be aware that such a therapy does in fact EXIST, and deserves a place on the list of healthcare considerations/ options in the creation of your own lifelong health plan, or in the choosing of treatment for any symptoms that might potentially be improved by chelation therapy. The more you know….
After taking extensive coursework and passing exams in this field, Robin Ellen Leder, M.D. was certified to do chelation in the safest, most effective way, a protocol established after many years of physicians delivering thousands of courses of this therapy. It is essential that these established practices be followed carefully by those who deliver this therapy. Dr. Leder has successfully provided this therapy to hundreds of patients in her own Hackensack functional medical office. Since her mentorship with Dr. Robert Atkins, the diet and health pioneer, Dr. Leder has treated thousands of patients using the innovative “root -cause-seeking” approach for such conditions as fatigue, gut issues, thyroid/ adrenal dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, auto-immune disease, psychological issues, autism and any complex concerns for which answers have not been immediately apparent in the world of traditional medicine. See ad, page 3.
Expanding Our Healthspan
Holistic Strategies for Long-Term Well-Being
by Carrie Jackson
While many people seek to prolong life, those extra years will not be fulfilling without good health. “The United States has one of the worst healthspans in the world. We have the highest rate of chronic disease and spend too much time suffering and deteriorating,” declares Dr. Eric Plasker, a chiropractor and creator of The 100 Year Lifestyle, an instructional manual and wellness system for making the most of an extended lifespan.
According to Plasker, “How you take care of yourself every day has a direct effect on your long-term quality of life. Unfortunate-
ly, the current healthcare system has focused mostly on symptoms and disease treatment. We need to have more of a lifestyle-care approach to help you function at your highest level for a lifetime, instead of constantly trying to get your health back.”

Diamandis asserts that people possess greater control over their healthspan than they may think. “We’re at a turning point in health care—shifting from a reactive, one-size-fits-all model to a proactive, personalized and data-driven approach,” he remarks. “While many people assume their longevity is mostly genetic, the data tells a different story. Studies involving tens of millions of people show that your genes account for only 7 to 30 percent of how long you live. That means the rest is up to you—your lifestyle, your environment and what you eat.”
The Food Paradox
The impact of food on our well-being cannot be underestimated, and Diamandis points out that food can be either the slowest form of poison or the most powerful medicine. In a nutshell, our daily meal choices put us in control of how we age. He recommends anti-inflammatory foods such as broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts, blueberries, walnuts, chia seeds and avocado.
“I eat the rainbow every day, because flavonoids, carotenoids and polyphenols act as molecular defenders, protecting your DNA, supporting your mitochondria and reducing your risk of conditions like heart disease, cancer and neurodegeneration,” he states. “I also use extra-virgin olive oil and turmeric liberally, which have both been shown to reduce inflammation at the cellular level. And I keep snacks like frozen blueberries and raw walnuts within arm’s reach, because what you actually eat is what you have close by.”
Avoiding harmful foods is just as important. “Sugar is incredibly inflammatory. It shrinks the hippocampus, disrupts metabolism and fuels conditions like diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Most people don’t realize how addictive it is or how much damage it causes until they cut it out and feel the difference,” says Diamandis.
Complementary Modalities
Integrating modalities such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, yoga and meditation into a wellness plan can help our bodies function at an optimum level. Plasker notes that the number, intensity and duration of chiropractic treatments vary based on a patient’s baseline health. “If you are meditating five times a day and have no underlying decay, you will need a lot less lifestyle care than if you are a weekend warrior or a marathoner who might have more decay," he explains.
While chiropractic care is well known for success with back and nerve pain, its hidden specialty is in functional and performance-based care. “Physical therapy, functional medicine and nutrition therapy work better with the addition of chiropractic care,” asserts Plasker. “It helps to align the spine so the nervous system can communicate between the brain and body the way it is supposed to.”
As we age, we may encounter ongoing consequences from the wear and tear that occurred in our younger days. “The pounding and collisions from youth sports can have a lasting effect on the body and can accelerate osteoarthritis,” Plasker points out. “Regular chiropractic adjustments help to restore alignment, balance, motion and function, so the body doesn’t continue to deterio-
rate. Anti-inflammatory supplements such as turmeric, glucosamine and chondroitin can help with acute inflammation, but if the alignment of the spine isn’t right, they’ll be facing a constant battle.”
Reframing fitness routines to prioritize longterm sustainability can help the body repair previous damage. “If you were an athlete, you can still be an athlete, but you might have to change your approach,” suggests Plasker. “Align the care you receive with the lifestyle you are choosing to live. If you’re going to train for triathlons, you need to eat healthy and stretch more. You need to increase your supplementation and the frequency of your chiropractic adjustments. But if you’re just going for hikes and power walks, you’ll need less lifestyle care. It depends on you and what you want.”
Managing Mind and Spirit
Holistic stress management is essential for longevity and overall wellness. “A nervous system that is always in fight-or-flight mode can lead to inflammation, burnout and elevated blood pressure, putting undue stress on the heart,” explains Plasker. “Chiropractic intervention, coupled with tools such as aromatherapy and meditation, can create peace for the nervous system so you can use your energy for other things.”
Lisa Faremouth Weber, the owner of Heaven Meets Earth Family Yoga Studio, in Evanston, Illinois, notes that practices such as crystal bowl sound healing, yoga and mindfulness can help calm the body and contribute to overall wellness and longevity. She also points out that there is considerable scientific evidence that supports the health benefits of practicing yoga, meditation, tai chi and qigong.
“Yoga and other complementary mind/body approaches integrate an individual’s physical, mental and spiritual components to improve cardiorespiratory health, physical and mental health and stress-related illnesses,” she explains. “Dr. Dean Ornish introduced millions to yoga’s health benefits through his published studies, which demonstrated that heart disease can be reversed through diet, meditation, group support and yoga. Additionally, ancient texts such as the Upanishads or Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras teach that the body follows the mind, and the mind follows the breath. Breath awareness and breathwork cultivate a balanced, harmonious and equanimous mind, enabling clarity and focus.”
Longevity Escape Velocity
Being mindful of daily habits and wellness routines in the present moment can lead to an extended healthspan down the road. “The goal isn’t just to live longer; it’s to stay healthy long enough to ride the wave of breakthroughs coming over the next decade and reach what we call ‘longevity escape velocity’. That’s the moment when, for every year you live, science can extend your life by more than a year,” explains Diamandis. “We’re not far off. And the choices you make today—using data-driven diagnostics, embracing functional medicine and sticking to lifestyle habits that work—are what will get you there.”

Benefits of Creatine Supplementation
Reasons To Add It to Your Regimen
by Zak Logan
Creatine has been a popular supplement for athletes looking to enhance performance and increase muscle mass, but more recently other proactive groups have taken notice. Biohackers, for example, see it as an aid in their quest to optimize well-being and extend their healthspan, while geroscientists that study the mechanisms of aging have identified creatine as a possible intervention to delay, treat or prevent age-related diseases.
A naturally occurring compound, creatine helps provide a steady energy sup-
ply to skeletal muscles, enabling them to contract and flex. It is also a vital contributor to numerous processes in the body. According to Jon Nakasone, owner of Aloha Personal Training, in Honolulu, three amino acids—arginine, glycine and methionine—collaborate to facilitate the body’s production of creatine, which in turn plays a pivotal role in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy-carrying molecule in cells.
Most of the body’s biological processes rely on ATP for the conversion of glucose with-
in cells. Nakasone also notes that creatine’s arginine is a precursor for the synthesis of nitric oxide, a molecule that can improve blood flow, which is especially important for men’s sexual function, as well as nutrient delivery to muscles.
Physical Benefits
Approximately 95 percent of the body’s creatine is found in skeletal muscle as phosphocreatine, where it serves as a rapid energy source during high-intensity activities. While naturally produced by the body, creatine is also consumed as a dietary supplement to enhance athletic performance. Since the 1990s, some individuals have reported positive fitness gains when using creatine supplements.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Nutrients indicates that creatine supplementation combined with resistance training can significantly improve upper and lower-body muscle strength in healthy, middle-aged adults, compared with resistance training alone. Nakasone and his team propose a holistic approach to fitness, emphasizing exercise, a healthy diet and quality sleep. However, they assert that creatine can provide additional benefits, especially for men seeking to enhance muscle size, power output and recovery.
According to an article by Dr. Howard E. LeWine, chief medical editor at Harvard Health, there is evidence that creatine supplementation, when combined with a DGM007, makaule from Getty Images/CanvaPro
proper diet that includes adequate protein intake, can accelerate muscle recovery after strenuous exercise.
Other Benefits
Creatine is one of the most widely researched supplements, and findings suggest that it may help to protect against oxidative stress and balance cellular energy in other parts of the body, including the heart and brain. Research published last year in the journal Nutrients underscores the benefits of creatine monohydrate in mitigating neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Huntington’s, as well as sarcopenia, a muscle-wasting condition prevalent in older individuals. Creatine also shows promise in addressing chronic fatigue syn-
drome, mild traumatic brain injury, cardiovascular disease and long COVID.
A systematic study published last year in Frontiers in Nutrition shows that creatine monohydrate supplementation can enhance memory, information processing speed and attention span in adults. Cases of osteoporosis and frailty have also shown improvement, especially when creatine intake is combined with resistance training.
Tips and Precautions
For optimal fitness outcomes, creatine powder is preferred due to its notable stability compared with other forms such as liquid and ethyl ester, which tend to be less effective and prone to breakdown be-

fore adequate utilization. Regarding dosage, Nakasone recommends starting with three grams a day, and, if it is tolerated well, gradually increasing it to five grams for a greater effect, if desired. However, he cautions against exceeding this dosage limit.
The Mayo Clinic endorses the safety of creatine when used as prescribed and suggests its use for up to five years by healthy individuals, noting that it does not appear to cause kidney damage in individuals with healthy kidney function. Potential interactions include a reduction in creatine’s efficacy when combined with caffeine. Creatine supplementation with 300 milligrams of caffeine or greater may hasten the progression of Parkinson’s disease. The Cleveland Clinic advises anyone with chronic kidney disease and other kidney-related problems to avoid taking creatine.
Research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2021 dispels common misconceptions regarding the side effects of creatine, including testosterone increase and hair loss. Nevertheless, some people report mild water retention for the first week when the supplement is first introduced into their regimen.

Staying Active With Dad
Three Fathers Share Their Stories
by Megy Karydes
Movement serves as a universal language, and one of the most powerful ways fathers can connect with their children. According to a study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, when parents model active lifestyles, they not only boost their own fitness but also lay the foundation for their children’s lifelong physical, social and cognitive development.
Regular physical engagement builds habits that can lead to healthier, happier lives. When a family engages in such activities to-
gether, what may have started out as exercise becomes a memory-making, relationshipenhancing and mood-boosting occasion.
Whether tossing a ball, hiking a trail or simply dancing in the living room, physical activity provides dads and kids a shared experience that strengthens their bond. There are many easy ways to spend quality time together, away from the distractions of screens and daily routines.
Making Movement Fun
“The goal, at least from my parenting
perspective, is to raise healthy, happy and resilient kids. A lot of people take for granted how powerful play can be,” says Brian Comly, an occupational therapist and father of two who founded Mind BodyDad.com to help families enjoy movement, play and togetherness. “It’s important for adults to model curiosity, creativity and connection, and instill these skills early. Oftentimes, the substitute is a phone, tablet or TV, which actually inhibits or atrophies these skills.”
W. Zach Smith, a Seattle-based physical therapist and founder of HIDEF Physical Therapy, believes that modeling healthy behavior and starting early is paramount, and it doesn’t have to be overly complicated. “Starting from a young age, I would bring my kids to the garage when I worked out. Now, both of them will copy me and grab small, oneto-three-pound dumbbells and do a lot of the exercises that I do,” Smith shares, adding that when the kids were younger, they would help him with the yard work, pulling the garden cart and picking up after him.
Rucking, a practice where a child is strapped to the back of a parent or caregiver for a walk, has been a favorite activity for both Comly and Smith. Smith notes that rucking not only enhances the physical challenge for the parent but also provides immense enjoyment for their children. As his daughter has matured, she has developed the ability to jump out of her stroller and run alongside it for extended periods, alternating between running and resting.
Prioritizing Connection
Physical activities foster a deeper connection between individuals, extending beyond simple muscle development. Andres Ochoa, a project manager in Chicago and a father of two daughters aged 10 and 12, has observed that engaging in shared physical activities strengthens their family bond. After meeting their respective sports commitments during the week, Ochoa makes sure to dedicate the weekends to family time.
Ochoa finds that shared physical activities enable him to remain fully present and focused, while minimizing distractions. “Being together and active creates moments of true connection, where kids feel seen and valued,” he says, noting that such moments can lead to meaningful conversations, stronger emotional ties and improved communication.
Depending on the season, Ochoa may take his daughters to their local YMCA to practice basketball or ride bikes on a nearby trail. Occasionally, they will set a family goal such as completing a 5K run. Ochoa’s primary objective is not to introduce additional stress into their lives. They participate in the Turkey Trot every year, and in the absence of scheduled races, engage in runs as a family, challenging each other. He often allows his daughters to take the lead in selecting their activities.
Small Habits, Big Impact
Even with today’s digital distractions, dads that prioritize physical activity find creative ways to incorporate movement into their daily routines. For instance, Ochoa walks his daughters to school every Friday whenever possible. If the weather is bad or they are headed somewhere after school, he strategically parks several blocks away, allowing them to walk for a portion of the journey.
• Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal and Immune System Disorders
• Treatment Evaluation of Endocrine and Skin Disorders
While structured sports offer numerous benefits, Comly reminds parents not to forget about unstructured play. “Kids, for hundreds of thousands of years, evolved to explore the environment, not plastic toys,” he quips. “That’s literally how they learn and how they grow. They are meant to engage with each other, and in a natural environment, and the parent’s role is to help facilitate that, not interfere with it.”

A Holistic Approach to Men's Physical & Sexual Well-Being
by Olga Ribble
As June rolls around, it’s time to shine a spotlight on men’s health and well-being. In a world where stereotypes often dictate that men should be tough, stoic, and resilient, it’s crucial to remember that men’s health encompasses far more than physical fitness alone. From mental well-being to sexual health, the spectrum of men’s health is wide and varied, deserving of attention, care, and understanding.
As a sex and intimacy coach for men, I encounter men grappling with a range of issues, including but not limited to premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, lack of intimacy, and relationship

challenges. It is essential to approach men’s health with a holistic perspective, acknowledging that sexual health is just one component of overall well-being. Let’s delve into some key aspects that contribute to men’s health and how they intersect with sexual issues.
Physical Fitness and Nutrition: Regular exercise and a balanced diet are foundational pillars of good health for everyone, regardless of gender. Engaging in physical activity not only promotes cardiovascular health and muscle strength but also enhances mood and reduces stress. Moreover, maintaining a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains supports overall vitality and energy levels, which can positively impact sexual function.
Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being: Men often face societal pressures to uphold an image of strength and invulnerability, which can inhibit open discussions about mental health. However, prioritizing mental well-being is paramount for holistic health. Stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues can profoundly affect sexual desire and performance. Seeking support from mental health professionals, practicing mindfulness and stress-reduction techniques, and nurturing emotional connections with loved ones are all vital steps toward fostering robust mental health.

Preventive Healthcare and Regular Check-Ups: Regular medical check-ups are essential for monitoring and maintaining men’s health. Routine screenings for conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes, and prostate health can help detect potential issues early on, allowing for timely intervention and treatment. Addressing underlying health concerns can mitigate the risk
of developing complications that may impact sexual function.
Communication and Relationships: Effective communication skills are fundamental for maintaining healthy relationships, including intimate partnerships. Many sexual issues stem from miscommunication, unrealistic expectations, or unresolved conflicts within relationships. Encouraging open dialogue, active listening, and empathy can strengthen emotional bonds and enhance sexual intimacy. Couples who feel safe expressing their needs and desires are more likely to navigate sexual challenges together with compassion and understanding.
Harnessing Tantric Wisdom and Elevating Intimacy: Tantra, an ancient Eastern practice with roots dating back thousands of years, provides a comprehensive framework for sexuality and personal development that continues to resonate in contemporary society that extends beyond mere sexual techniques. Tantra provides a holistic framework for understanding the interconnectedness of mind, body and spirit. By integrating breath work, meditation, and mindful touch, Tantra offers a unique path to enhancing sexual experiences and overall life satisfaction.
In conclusion, men’s health encompasses a broad spectrum of physical, mental, and emotional well-being, with sexual health being just one aspect of the whole. By adopting a holistic approach that prioritizes physical fitness, mental health, communication skills, stress management, intimacy, and Tantric practices, men can nurture their overall health and enhance their quality of life.
Let’s use Men’s Health Month as an opportunity to raise awareness, break down stigmas, reduce shame, and encourage men to prioritize their well-being in every facet of life, physical, mental, relational, and sexual. Remember, seeking support and guidance is a sign of strength, not weakness, and every step taken toward better health is a step in the right direction.

Men’s Grooming Goes Green
Over the last 20 years, men’s daily use of personal care products has nearly doubled, according to the Environmental Working Group. Men apply shaving cream to their face, splash on cologne, shower with body wash, style their hair with wax and use strong antiperspirants without realizing that they might be exposing themselves to a host of toxins.
The most prevalent health culprits are hormone-disrupting phthalates and fragrance extenders that have been shown to inhibit testosterone levels and reduce sperm count. Preservatives such as formaldehyde, known to cause cancer, are also commonly used.
The effects of grooming routines extend beyond the individual because fossil fuels are expended to transport these products and discarded plastic containers accumulate in landfills, eventually degrading into microplastics that pollute waterways and contaminate the human food supply.
To mitigate these adverse effects on human and planetary health, consider using the following eco-friendly, organic and cruelty-free products.
• Reusable safety razors crafted from bamboo or metal and fitted with recyclable metal blades provide a close shave without contributing to the 2 billion disposable razors that end up in landfills every year and take more than a century to biodegrade.
• Electric shavers are reusable, reduce water use and have a lower carbon footprint than disposable razors.
• Sustainably sourced beard-softening oils such as jojoba, argon or meadowfoam are infused with organic and vegan botanics by companies such as Copper Johns.
• Aluminumfree deodorants maintain freshness throughout
the day using bacteria-fighting activated charcoal, natural clays and botanical additions like coriander. Antiperspirants that inhibit perspiration by blocking pores with aluminum-based ingredients should be avoided.
• Natural body washes and soaps with ingredients such as Jimmy Red corn, coconut oil and kaolin clay gently clean pores and smooth the skin without employing drying agents. Choose products packaged in natural materials.
• Chemical-free colognes with natural fragrances derived from essential oils, herbs and spices can be alluring without being overpowering. Some use organic sugarcane alcohol. Noteworthy brands are Dr. Squatch, Henry Rose and unisex fragrances by Heretic.
• Natural shaving creams formulated with skin-nourishing ingredients such as coconut-derived surfactants, vegetable glycerin, aloe, vitamin E and botanicals provide a close shave, even for sensitive skin.
• Chemical-free shampoos employ sulfate-free cleaning agents and natural botanicals to nourish the hair. Additionally, zinc and botanical additions like sage and tea tree oil are incorporated to address scalp and dandruff concerns.
• Hair waxes and pomades should not contain petroleum. Look for ingredients like strong-hold beeswax, or simply choose a water-based product.

HEALING
ROCK COLLAGE HEALING GALLERY
Judith P Dazle
441 B Cedar Lane, Teaneck NJ 07666 www.rockcollage.com
How you do Anything is How you do Everything" is my favorite quote and way of life. “Healing is not a one-size-fits-all all,” This is a saying that I have coined since beginning my spiritual journey. I realize that one healing modality may not work for everybody, and that’s ok. This is why I made Rock Collage (Founded in 2015) a one-stop healing shop. Not only am I a Grandmaster Reiki healer, but I am an experienced nutritionist, crystal practitioner, astrologer, herbalist, jeweler, yogi, artist, musician, life coach, and intuitive reader. Most importantly, I, Myself, invite you to do the same. I have made it so that Rock Collage is a place where individuality thrives, self-love is the norm, and everyone has a second chance at life. Becoming a mother in 2020 not only shifted my outlook on life but also helped me understand another level of healing and how to serve better the majority of my client base, who are also women with children. From assisting women to regulate their menstrual cycles to being able to pinpoint illness in the body by holding space of understanding for those who are working on their mental wellness and hand-making jewelry that serves a purpose, I am genuinely making space for the individual soul while making a collective impact.
