What is a Female Executive? I am the one that makes the bread, weaves the fabric, creates the peace, negotiates the smiles, shuts it down and wakes it all back up. I am the Swiss Army Knife of mankind. I am the one that gives birth and keeps life goingwhether I have to nudge it with my heart, my mind, my blood or my foot! I keep the bass rhythm of life moving. I am that female that executes the needed, the necessary and the fantastic. I am THAT female executive.

From the Editor and Chief Creative Officer

Welcome to the 24th issue of E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive. This month marks the end of our second year and we have exciting developments on the horizon. Before we get started with this issue, I wanted to share how we came up with this theme 20 Significant firsts. It all started with this a photo of Marin Alsop, the first woman to conduct an American Philharmonic Orchestra. That lead to listening to her story (included in the article) which lead to this topic. Marin’s passion jumps off the page, we should all pursue our passions with this much dedication! And obviously, on an even bigger front, there’s the exciting news of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presumed Nomination as the first women to represent a major political party for President of the United States. She’s the most qualified person to ever run male or female. Politics aside, this is a very exciting year for women. The 20 Significant first doesn’t include all the areas of accomplishments –it actually just skims the surface. But as you read through the names and accomplishments you will realize, there is no where women cannot go and nothing we cannot do. And one day this gender issue will all seem boring and redundant because we will stop qualifying the value of a person based on gender , color or anything else. We will see the talent, the person, the task and the gifts and not limit them with anything else. I hope you enjoy this issue. -Althea Ledford Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Women and Rights

“There are moments in Life when keeping silent becomes a fault, and speaking an obligation. A civic duty, a moral challenge, a categorical imperative from which we cannot escape.” Oriana Fallaci

We – women of the Western world – have been fighting for our rights for decades. We know how difficult it is to have them recognized because even after so many years of hard battles we are still forced to keep up our struggle today. There are countries in which the dreams of modernity, rights and freedom are shared not only between women but also - often secretly by a part of the male population. However, what we in the West consider to be freedomand rights does not always match the view of others on this issue. If you went to Saudi Arabia, that's what you may notice very quickly, but for now just start by taking note that for example the Kingdom of

Saudi Arabia has never signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Page 32 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

In the Western world there is much talk of Saudi Arabia and the situation of enormous inequality of rights between genders. Saudi people are very familiar with Western society. Many of them attend our universities in the USA or the EU, or go to these areas on holiday or business trips. Just like us, they use social media (only pornographic material is censored). Satellite television is forbidden by the government, but the Saudis often disobey this prohibition. Many among women and men have the desire for a more modern society, where the individual could enjoy more freedom. Still, this eagerness for more rights and social justice cannot be taken for granted. Suffice to say that the majority of Saudi women from the middle to wealthy class feel privileged compared Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

to us Westerners and they do not understand what motivates us to be independent. And as much as I would love to, unfortunately I have no information pertaining to women in less fortunate economic conditions.

The Absolute Monarchy Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy. The King is also the Prime Minister and ensures the implementation of the Islamic law. He also takes cared of his administration, general policy and defense. The political system is based on the application of Islamic law or shari’a. There is not a parliament, but a Shura Council, which is able to advise the king and the ministers, but Page 33 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

which has no effective veto power over legislation. Its members are appointed by the king, and it is he who decides whether to listen or ignore the Shura.

The Wahhabism Islam, unlike the Christian communities for example, does not have an institutionalized frame of reference to guide the faithful in the interpretation of the sacred books. The interpretation of the Koran is not the same for all Muslims. The fatwa issued by a mufti is not for all Muslims what a papal bull is for the Catholic community. It DOES NOT exist, for example, a supreme leader of Sunni Islam that all Sunni follow. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

The Saudis are Sunni as the 80% of Muslims worldwide. It is the state religion and their version is the ultra-conservative Wahhabism, which follows the Islam of the origins, the tradition uncontaminated by time and the changing of habits. The Wahhabism was born in the 18th century and established itself in the 20th century thanks to alliance between the West and Saudi Arabia. Al Qaeda was born within the Wahhabism and it is one of its most extreme wings. Since it has turned against the house of Saud, in the name of Bin Laden, Riyadh is trying with difficulty to find a way to a Wahhabism reform. The Wahhabis believe that all those who do not practice the Islam in the manner indicated by them are heathens and enemies of the Islam. In the kingdom, Saudis are all Muslims and they are the only ones to be considered citizen. Non-Muslims are Page 34 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

considered residents. Apostasy for the Saudis is punished with the death penalty. The Saudis follow the same rules that their prophet taught them in the 7th century. The five obligatory prayers mark the progression of a typical day of a Saudi. Everything stops for about 30 minutes: business meetings are interrupted, shops close, restaurants stop the service, people stop talking. There are those who go to the mosque, while others deploy a prayer rug wherever they are. It is considered inappropriate to stare at someone who is praying.

Rules For Foreigners Foreigners working in Saudi Arabia live in compounds surrounded by important security systems to protect them from attacks, since not everyone agrees with their presence in the country. Those areas are Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

entirely dedicated to them and there they can live in a Western manner, although within certain limits.

nature. All kinds of sex toys are not allowed. Of course, homosexuality is strictly not tolerated, even only simply coming out.

Foreign women outside the compounds must wear at least the abaja (long dress, black and wide that will not stick to the body) but in some cases they may be required to also cover their head. All foreigners who are found to be infected with HIV or to suffer from any severe medical condition are deported and sent to their country of origin.

Non-Muslims are allowed to practice their religion in the privacy of their own homes and on their own. It is absolutely forbidden to hold religious rituals outside of the Muslim ones. Proselytizing is not allowed. You cannot sport symbols of other religions such as the crucifix. Owning books such as the Bible or owning images of saints is not tolerated. Religious offenses can also be pursued with the arrest and crucifixion.

Haram

(Prohibited)

Strict prohibitions include: the consumption of pork meat, alcohol and drugs. Possession of pornographic material is forbidden as well. Beware that magazines and normal commercial catalogs in the West may be considered as pornographic in Page 35 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Trade unions and political organizations are prohibited and so are rallies. In a recent period there has been much talk of the death sentence against Ali Mohammed Al-Nimr. A twentyyear-old man sentenced to be crucifixed for illegal protests and illegal possession of firearms when he was 17. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Atheists Are Terrorists In 2014 Saudi Arabia introduced new laws including one that defines atheists as terrorists, according to a report published by Human Rights Watch. Atheism is simply inconceivable in the view of the Wahhabism.

Freedom Of Expression Or lack thereof. Writing articles denouncing a situation or informing foreign journalists of said situation, participating in rallies or signing petitions against the government are all considered crime. A few hours after the Saudi Kingdom officially condemned the attack against Charlie Hebdo, blogger Raif Badawi was sentenced to receive 1000 lashes, 10 years in Page 36 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

prison and a fine of about . $196,000, for creating and running the Free Saudi Liberals Forum and insulting Islam His crime? Being an atheist and having written in favor of liberalism. But there are many people in jail sentenced for simply voicing their opinions.

Most Oppressed Women On The Planet In recent years, due to the state of segregation of their women, Saudi Arabia has gained the dubious title of "the most oppressed women in the world". The lives of women are managed from birth to death by a male legal guardian who must be a member of their family. At the time of their marriage legal protection goes to the husband. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

WOMAN IN BURQA BANNED FROM THE MALL, THEY SHOUT AT HER: "YOU ARE INDECENT." A woman in Saudi Arabia was barred from the Barzan Mall in the city of Hail, after entering the building wearing the burqa, but without gloves, She was escorted out of the premises because her hands were "indecent". Watch the

VIDEO. According to Wahhabism women cannot under any circumstances touch a man who is not their husband, father, brother or son. When they go out they are forced to wear the abaja and the hejab (the veil in Saudi Arabia must cover the head and face) in order to "protect their modesty". All public places have rules to separate single men from women and their families. The mutawwiʿa, a sort of religious police, has the task of rigorously patrolling the streets to ensure conformity with the Sharia. Page 37 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Better Dead Than Dishonored In 2002, fifteen female students died in a fire at a girls' school in Mecca. The religious police prevented them from fleeing the building because they were not properly dressed, since that they had removed the abaja, being the school only for women, only and the fire made it impossible for them to put it back on. But for many parents in this country, both mothers and fathers, a dead daughter is better than family dishonor.

Women cannot go out unless accompanied by a male family member. It is allowed to make use of drivers, but the woman must sit in the back seat. The law actually states that a woman's guardian can issue a written authorization to enable her to go out alone. However, the majority of Saudi society links women's freedom of movement to immorality. This is why it is not common Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

that a guardian writes an authorization for one of the women in his family. Both studying and working require the approval of a guardian. It is forbidden for women to try on clothes in shops, they have to buy them and try them at home. In court the testimony of a woman is worth half that of a man. There is no minimum age for marriage and the woman must have the approval of her father to get married and cannot marry men who are not Muslims, unless they convert to Islam. If a foreigner wants to marry a Saudi woman, he must seek permission from the Interior Ministry. A Westerner is seldom granted that permission. Women, in the event of a death sentence, are given the “privilege” of being executed with a gunshot to the neck instead of stoned, crucified or beheaded by the sword. That is for not forcing them to discover the face or be touched by a man. In short, the modesty of the woman is protected until her death.

Page 38 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Are Women Human? Fahad Al-Ahmadi of the Saudi Academy for Training and Consulting caused a social media raging outburst when he put on Facebook a course titled “Are women human?” Because of the chaos that resulted from the title of his course, its creator justified himself by saying that he wanted to "provoke a debate." He added that Islam is the only religion Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

which holds women in high consideration, in contrast to Western countries that turn them into sexual objects.

Important Dates For Women's Rights - From 2004 women are allowed to attend law school. - In 2006 the law allows women to work in shops open to the public, but all the shops where both genders work must have walls erected to separate men from women. - In 2009 Riyadh gets its first education center where boys and girls are allowed to study shoulder to shoulder. - In 2009 Norah al-Faiz is appointed deputy minister of education. Under Saudi law, a female minister or woman working in the administration cannot talk to a Page 39 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

male or participate to meetings. - In 2012 after much international pressure, the Saudi authorities for the first time agreed to allow women to compete at the Olympics with the authorization of their father and accompanied all the time by a close male relative. It was a historical event that has not been repeated since. 

In 2013 women were given the right to exercise the legal profession.- \

In 2013, the now former Saudi leader threw the door open to the Shura Council by appointing 30 women out of a total of 150 members. BUT, they must wear the full Islamic veil; reach the seats of the Board through a separate entrance; seat separately from men.

- In 2014 a Royal Decree made physical education mandatory for schoolgirls for the first time. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

- In 2015 women obtained the right to vote and candidacy, but only in municipal elections. Municipalities are solely concerned with public services, parks and road conditions.

Woman To Drive Movement

There Can Be NO

Human Rights

WITHOUT Womens Rights

The news that the Kingdom women could not drive had been known for some time, but until recently what was not known was the reason for such a ban. A Saudi liberal journalist decided to ask a Saudi historic and she managed to obtain an incredible explanation.

Saudi Historian: Our Women Should Not Be Allowed to Drive Lest They Get Raped-video An article detailing the interview can also be retrieved from http:// www.terrafemina.com. According to the historian, there being great distance between one city and another in the country, if a woman drives alone and the car breaks down she could be raped. When the reporter replied that in all countries of the world women drive, he counters by stating that those women do not mind being raped. I recommend watching the last two minutes, it's worth it. If , after all this, you want to know more about the lives and conditions of Saudi women, I recommend a wonderful book published a few years ago Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa al-Sanea.

me

As a professional dancer in my early to late twenties, I am reminded of the transformation that took place as I went from a Showgirl fresh out of the shower in my robe, to this show stopping extravaganza in full stage make up, wig, head pieces and spectacular beaded costumes that fit my body in such perfection as it sparkled in the human eyes adoration and wonder. I became each costume that the French and Bulgarian wardrobe dressers put me in. I remember I was always walking swiftly, sometimes running toward the stage curtains, where the Showgirls would be lined up in the wings. Just as I could hear the number before mine coming to an end, I would get in line. I was rarely dressed early waiting, and typically arrived just in the nick of time. That was pretty much my ‘MO’. For me, as a performer, I tended to enjoy the experience by switching it up to keep things, well, fresh for me. When you are contracted out as a performer in a show, day in and day out, the same show with the same routines are done a few times a day, six days a week for the life of the contract which is usually a year. That was thirteen shows a week, not including cities with six packs. Aside from the obvious wear and tear on the body physically, this ‘same ole’ routine has the potential of getting tiresome emotionally and mentally as well. What I found was that the first time I truly experienced living in the present moment was when I was dancing or acting on stage. From the moment I begin the process of getting ready, to the moment I step on the stage, it is an entire experience for me. No matter what kind of morning I was experiencing, or what thoughts were in my head, or what body

Page 45 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

parts were physically hurting me prior, I could rest in present certainty that the moment the music cued me to enter the stage nothing was going on except for me the Showgirl, or the actress in character. I brought nothing else with me except the experience of a moment to moment performance. I later discovered it primed me for present living in real life real. In doing this, although the choreography or script may be the same, it very rarely feels the same when you are truly present. It will always be a fresh performance. How can the last show be exactly as the one prior? What if a prop didn’t work as usual? What if an actor went up on a line? If you are not present, how would you adjust without making the necessary changes? If you didn’t adjust, how ridiculous would that be? A funny story comes to mind when one of the showgirls, during the opening performance of a show got the ribbons that were connected to these totem poles we were dancing around with, stuck in the tall feathers of her head piece. She was a few girls ahead of me, and when I saw this, all my heart could do was laugh out loud. It was a real Lucille Ball moment and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to find the humor in it. Till this day, when we get together, we still laugh about that performance. If we had panicked, or ignored the pink elephant on the stage…we would have missed the moment to help her, and also a moment which was truly very funny. Some of the

Page 46 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

girls did ignore it. For me, I couldn’t help but see the laughter in it, as some of us tried to uncoil the ribbons from her head piece, while we successfully stayed in step as best we could with the choreography. It wasn’t a moment to make fun, but was a moment to recognize the fun in a situation. Things happen in live performances just as in life. And so being in acceptance of a situation, experiencing and embracing it, is a choice we can make. She was just as conscious as I was and we both laughed

bout it for weeks. I have many funny stoes that I will give you in this current new ries, and relate it to how these things apy in real life.

I would like to relate this to the human costume at we wear. If I continued to dance around and nore that scenario without eling, I would just become at showgirl dancer in cosme, without

Page 47 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

any sense of self. My sense of self would be essentially distracted by the glittering costume that has all of my attention. When we are at a young age, we are all given a costume that takes us out of the NOW, and places us in time and space. We are taught that we need these costumes for human survival. We wear these belief systems as human costumes all of our lives. As you get older, you alter it, and conform it to somewhat fit you, but not quite. Your loyalty to your costume is touching. Parts of the costume may even be becoming, but most of it does not serve you at all. Why wear the same clothing that you wore when you were an infant?

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Can you see where the supreme effort to fit into something that no longer fits you can be debilitating? Your costume has become your identity. Every mistake you have been taught you made, came from the illusion that you should be fitting into this glittering costume. The lesson here, is that YOU have never made a mistake. Every selection that you have made up until this point was perfect, regardless of how it may seem to you. Your life choices, your partners, your choice not to have partners, your work, every physical, emotional, mental and financial experience have all been, from the view point of the soul, a remarkable service to you. They are all choices that were made as you journey in this schoolroom of life. The fact that we are discussing the tight costume you are in now, is a Universal reminder that you are not comfort-

This belief system will keep you uncomfortable all of your life, restricting you to express and be who you truly are. Remove it. Explore different ways able. Your costume is not your safety.

of dressing. Experience every moment in life and know that every moment has a choice in it. Whether you choose to bless and embrace your world or deny it, is your choice. Instead of identifying yourself as this or that in the world, realize that you are your world. Never allow yourself to be identified with a name or label. Truth cannot be named. Know that you are beautiful in your selfhood. I am delighted in helping you recognize this truth in your own life, as I did. However, to accomplish that goal, one must be willing to create greater selfawareness and do some work. In 2013, Gallup created a report called, The State of the American Workplace. I love research and the validity of this report comes from over ten years of research and 25 thousand responses. Here’s what they found:  18 % of employees were disengaged.  52 % of employees were not engaged  30 % employees were engaged

As the years have passed since the original report, the percentages have changed very little. It is becoming more apparent every day that to have a competitive edge in business we must engage our workforce. The truth is, there is just not enough qualified workers out there. In Pittsburgh alone, my home town, a new study, Supply, Demand and the Future of Work in the Pittsburgh Region, shows that we will have a shortfall of almost 200,000 qualified workers in the next 10 years. Research continues to highlight the importance of a twofold approach to a quality workforce. This includes formal education and the emotional IQ to succeed. Page 54 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Let’s take a closer look at the numbers. The 18% of employees that are disengaged, I named TOXIC. You’ve experienced them. They walk around the office and look for allies to agree with their assessment that, “This place sucks!” If they don’t find solace and/or agreement in one colleague, they spend more time traveling around the office until they do. It’s the old adage, “Misery loves company.” One thing is for sure. They are not being productive and they are sabotaging other people’s work productivity and creativity as well. If you’re management, the sooner you identify these people the better for the entire working environment. Identify, communicate then create a change.

Sometimes these toxic folks are salvageable and sometimes not. It happens, sometimes a life crisis will be the issue, or perhaps they came into a position they are not a good fit for, or the company itself is not giving them the training and the skills necessary to do a good job. It’s not always that they have a bad attitude. Unfortunately, many businesses do not spend the resources on good training. This creates unhappy workers, poor work product, lost time and stress for all involved. If this toxic Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

individual is your colleague, there are specific skills to communicate in an empathetic way that allows you to continue the work you want to do well. Better yet, learn how to communicate the more positive side of life. Nothing repels toxic folk more than a happy person. I’ll examine this in more detail when we talk about the importance of communication in a future article.

Next we have the 52% of employees that are not engaged. I have named them DRONES.

They come

to work, they do what they need to and then they go home. They are not innovators. They don’t think outside the box very well. Their creativity is simple, not complex. They don’t have ideas for betterment in work processes or the company at large. They are also the biggest pool of employees to more easily move into the “engaged” category. Many of them are looking for the smallest change to get them excited about what they do and their sense of feeling valued. According to the most recent Tiny Pulse Employee Engagement & Organizational Culture Report, Page 55 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

only 31% of employees feel strongly valued at work, which leaves 69% who feel only marginally valued or not valued at all. I have a theory that there are two distinct important aspects of a human beings existence that crave to be bolstered. People want to be acknowledged and they want to know they have value. Without it, their enthusiasm for life, work and community are diminished. In future articles I’ll share specific actions and ideas you can take to create a culture where employees feel like they matter.

Almost a third of the workforce are fully engaged. They belong to the “I own it” community. They have a stake in the present and future of the company they work for. It doesn’t come from stock ownership, it comes from their own ability and the atmosphere in the workplace where they feel like they make a difference. They’re aware of their purpose at work, but more importantly, the purpose of their work. (More on that differentiation later.) These people believe their ideas are listened to. Not necessarily always agreed with, but not ignored or written off as preposterous. This group is important too because they are the major influencers of the unengaged and disengaged to join their “community”. They can be the best ambassadors to reveal the strengths of the company and the leaders that dwell in the C-Suite. Naturally, the culture of the organization has to be one that encourages engagement. The men and women in the C-Suite have to be shining examples and innovative leaders of what the company’s mission and vision is. Even the mission and vision statements have to be inclusionary and discerning. For it to be possible to have a third of your workforce fully engaged and growing, all aspects of the company must be in line with that mindset. It may sound impossible, but it’s not. It may sound difficult and complex, but it doesn’t have to be. I am a big believer in simple solutions create big results and you should be too. Consistency is more important than complexity and I will show you how. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

First, let me ask you a question. Are you sick and tired of hearing about the differences in the generations? Whenever I have posed this question at an event, nearly everyone raises their hand. Are you constantly reading articles about how millennials and boomers can never get along? Is this a topic of discussion in your workplace? I’m beginning to think this is a marketing ploy started by a group of men and women to sell you new products, books, trainings and software to track the differences and teach a different set of skills to different age groups. I have a different take on this challenge. The reason we have such a difference between generations is because of information. Eric Schmidt, ex CEO of Google and current Executive Chairman of Alphabet, Inc., stated that, “Every two days now we create as much information as we did from the dawn of civilization up until 2003.” That statement was made in 2010, who knows what means now. All this information makes for increased innovation and thought processes. That is not going to end. Each generation going forward is going to have increased information and innovation, at a faster pace than the previous generation. The next generation will surely have self-driving cars and make dinner before they ever get there. If we focus on their differences, we are forever creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of people in the workforce, and the world for that matter, not getting along. I have a different solution. What if we took a look at everyone’s commonalities? What if company leaders taught their working community skills that increased the success in a person’s whole life, no matter what age they were. The notion that people leave their personal lives at home is gone. Our lives are forever entwined personally and professionally. Therefore, if you influence change in behavior that affects a person at work with skills they can utilize in their personal life, you create a more engaged individual. When you are happier at work, you are happier at Page 56 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

home. When you have the skills to deal with a crisis at home, you are a more productive and creative person at work. I’ve created the Trifecta of Success. Three components to create more possibilities and success in a day. The skills in each component can be utilized in every aspect of your life. It’s not complicated or complex. It does take increased self-awareness and a willingness to make deliberate choices for effective change. However, if that sounds difficult, repetition and small baby steps help on that journey. I’ll show you how. In the coming months I will share with you the techniques necessary to create these changes, for you and your business. It will create greater engagement, loyalty and satisfaction among those who are willing and open to a more positive and productive life.

MAKING A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION There is an old adage that you cannot take back your first impression. Fair or not, this is true. So make it a great impression. When meeting someone new for the first time, whether it may be a friend, colleague, etc., keep this in mind. A smile always goes a long way.

Your body language is very important.  Don’t fold your arms or cross your legs. Just  

  

Being on time is also critical and a sign of respect. Allow enough time for parking, traffic or connections because a barrage of excuses doesn’t impress anybody. Page 68 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

stand up nice and straight. -Maintain great posture is really important. -A proper handshake is good to learn at a young age (no knuckle crunchers, wet noodles, or endless handshakes please). -If you go by a nickname say it up front (e.g. Lizzy short for Elizabeth or Ally for Allison). -You want to observe someone else’s personal space. Don’t stand too close to someone. Be about an arms length away. -Respect the personal bubble.

Keep in mind that this is how we do things in the United States. I always tell my clients that other cultures have their own practices and we should respect and learn from them. There is a wonderful book called Kiss, Bow, or Shake Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

The Power Lunch Etiquette By Rachel Isgar Hands: How to do Business in Sixty Countries by Terri Morrison and Wayne Conaway. They address what is appropriate greeting etiquette country by country. For instance, if you are meeting someone European, he/she may give you the two-cheek kiss if you are a female as is customary in their culture.

-If multiple people are involved and you are making introductions, it is far better to err on the formal side until someone corrects you. For example, you might say “Hello Mr. Jackson,” and he may correct you by saying, “Call me Dave.”

Spit out gum prior to any business meeting. Need I say more? -

You should also carefully monitor the tone of your voice (this is important on the phone as well). You don’t want to shout. If people tell you that your voice is too loud, please listen to them. If they ask you to speak up, please do. You also don’t want to sound like a know-it-all.

WHEN FIRST MEETING NEW POTENTIAL CLIENTS OR COLLEAGUES: -Best

to address them as Mr. or Mrs., or even Dr. if applicable, until it becomes clear they have given you permission to use their first name. Page 69 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

-When out at a business meeting that involves alcohol it is better to abstain from drinking or if there is a lot of pressure have one drink maximum. Business deals can easily head south when alcohol gets involved. Behavior can change very quickly (and usually not for the better)!

THE ART OF CONVERSATION People are intrinsically fascinated by other cultures. I believe that it is appropriate to start a meeting by sharing a little bit about yourself or your culture. But take caution when doing so, it is important not to start off the conversation with anything too personal. -Being a good listener is important too. -It is acceptable, often times advised, to take notes, but is polite to ask for permission first (especially if the notes are going into your cell phone).  -Asking open-ended questions and taking notes demonstrates that you are interested in what the other person has to say.  -In a group setting, try to ask various questions to different people and “work” the table. (This is important because it shows that you care about what others near you have to say, even those who may not usually prefer to voice their opinions). 

Tip: always have some conversation starters or ice breakers in your back pocket for awkward silences. It can be about anything, sports, movies, etc., while you are trying to get to know someone. Small talk is better than no talk at all. At the time I am writing this article, the World Cup is taking place, and it seems that everyone I encounter can relate to the soccer games taking place in one way or another. Once the business talk begins, an easy lead-in to the conversation is to perhaps ask whomever you are speaking to about their personal experiences with the company.

NAVIGATING A BUSINESS MEAL WHICH MIGHT INCLUDE AN INTERVIEW  If possible, let the client order first. Follow their lead. Please do not get a 5-course meal if they are just ordering a salad. For example, if the client orders a cob salad, do not order the T-bone steak with 5 sides.

 -Be careful if you choose to order

spaghetti with marinara sauce (my favorite) or another food with a sauce.  -Avoid pizza, ribs, or other finger foods for lunch since these foods DO get messy and it is hard to look professional when eating with your hands.

Page 70 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

 -Avoid foods that stain, are difficult to eat,

or can get stuck in your teeth easily (broccoli, spinach or pineapple are the usual culprits for me  -If you are tired, please do order coffee or iced tea with your meal as a way to perk up, unless you have done so prior to the meeting.  - Preview a menu on a restaurant’s website prior to dining there. )This is beneficial if you are an indecisive person, picky eater or have a lot of dietary restrictions that may prevent you from ordering food in a timely manner or the person you are meeting has these issues).

 -When sitting down, the first thing to do after you have introduced yourself is to put your napkin on your lap.

 -The number one reason that a business lunch can turn sour is if the waiter or waitress is spoken to rudely.

 -Do not ask the person interviewing you how much money he or she earns.

 -Do not arrive starving to a business meal Don’t not hassle over the check. If you asked a client out to lunch, you always pay. -When selecting a restaurant, pick somewhere you have been before and can recommend.

 After you schedule a meeting to write it down or put in your electronic calendar immediately.  Confirm the meeting the day before.  On the day of the meeting, allow plenty of time in case of traffic or parking issues.  It is ALWAYS better to arrive early rather than late. Being late can cost you the job or even the business you were seeking. There are absolutely no excuses that a potential employer wants to hear.

 -Make sure once the meeting begins that you have put your cell phone and any other electronic devices away.

-Pick a place that is not too noisy and will have an atmosphere conducive to the progress you hope to make in your meeting.

ELECTRONICS AND SOCIAL MEDIA When is it acceptable to check your cell phone at the table? I get asked that question almost as often as my children asking me for rides or a raise in their allowance, which happens quite often. Always put the phone on vibrate or silent before the meal and give your client undivided attention. Keep your cell phone completely off the table.

Page 71 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

The ONLY exception to this rule is if you are expecting a call from your doctor or there is an emergency situation in your family. If this is the case, it is important to make your client aware beforehand that this call may come through. Cell phones are generally just detrimental to meetings. That is why some businesses are now collecting all cell phones before everyone sits down. Do not post information about your interview on Facebook or any other form of social media. Your potential employer can track this down and it definitely will not be for your benefit.

DRESSING APPROPRIATELY The number one reason a business lunch can go wrong is dressing too casually. Making a great first impression includes dressing appropriately for your meeting. Dress code does vary by career industry. For example, if you are meeting with a lawyer or someone in the financial industry, you probably want to wear a suit or a fancier dress and heels. However, if you are interviewing at Whole Foods, the dress

code will be much more laid back. It is still never acceptable to show up to an interview in shorts, jeans or a tee shirt (or short skirts or short dresses for ladies). The Internet has great examples of what constitutes dress code from formal, to business casual, and so forth. Do your research beforehand and dress appropriately. Please make sure not to wear a hat at the dining table, ever. If you are unsure of what type of dress is acceptable in the field you are meeting, it is always best to be overdressed rather than underdressed

Here’s a sampling of some of the big issues we’re tackling, but this is just EQUAL PAY

Today, the median wage of a woman working full-time in the United States is approximately $39,600—only 79 percent of a man’s median earnings of $50,400. While the pay gap has narrowed slightly over the past few years, a number of policies and practices, both formal and informal, continue to perpetuate inequality. Better policies that impact pay levels, like the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, signed into law by President Obama in 2009, as well as other factors, like hiring decisions, family leave policies, and pay secrecy rules, can help shrink the pay gap.Today, the median wage of a woman working full-time in the United States is apClick Here proximately $39,600—only 79 percent of a man’s median earnings of $50,400. Geopolitical tensions have risen to a level where another major war or even world war is no longer outside the realm of possibilities. There has been a military build-up by the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China in the South China Sea (SCS), and by Russia in the Baltic and Western European regions. China’s SCS Dispute with Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines over oil rich territory rich is most troubling. Both China and Russia have increased their military presence in the northern Pacific Ocean where they have been engaging in joint military exercises. An eruption of armed conflict involving China, may result in both responding. Newly constructed radar dome on Chinese-controlled Subi Reef Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague between China and the Philippines concerning lawful sovereignty over an area rich in natural gas deposits. The matter was brought by the Philippines as to the legality of China’s “ninedash line”. China has never clarified the parameters of the “nine-dash line”, which encompasses approximately 80% of the SCS. The Philippines claims that China violated the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); an agreement about territorial seas and exclusive economic zones (EEZ). China’s motivation is not the preservation of ancestral waters or historical fishing sites, protected by the UNCLOS; rather China seeks to complete a “strategic triangle” in the SCS to monitor and control regional maritime activities, to bolster its naval position, and to gain access to muchneeded natural resources. To further its interests, China has built man-made islands and artificial harbors on reefs creating more than 3,200 acres, and increasing its EEZs by 200 nautical miles or 370 km, and its territorial seas by 12 nautical Page 89 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

miles or 22 km, on which it has installed airfields and surveillance systems, and a radar tower. China now plans on installing an Air Defense Identification Zone, or ADIZ, covering the SCS. An ADIZ demarcates a zone outside a country’s national airspace where planes must identify themselves for security reasons and follow the country’s military instructions. The Pentagon has accused China of using “coercive tactics short of armed conflict.” The Philippines is expected to prevail in proceedings boycotted by China. China called the PCA arbitration illegal and stated that it would ignore the PCA’s decision, even though China is one of five permanent United Nations Security Council members. As the PCA has no enforcement authority, enforcement will fall upon other nations both in and outside of the SCS region. “Only when everyone plays by the same rules can we avoid the mistakes of the past, like when countries challenged one another in contests of strength and will, with disastrous consequences for the region,” stated U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html June 3, 2016.

The U.S. could also be drawn into this conflict based on 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty between the U.S. and the Philippines. The Treaty states, "Each Party recognizes that an armed attack in the Pacific Area on either of the Parties would be dangerous to its own peace and safety and declares that it would act to meet the common dangers in accordance with its constitutional processes." If the U.S. failed to respond, it could damper its relationship with other nations in Asia. Also relevant is the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) in the South China Sea, in which ASEAN and China agreed upon multilateral risk-reduction and confidencebuilding measures. DOC requires that territorial and jurisdictional disputes be resolved without resorting to the threat or use of force.

Chinese and Russian Joint Military Buildup In advance of the G7 Summit, China warned Japan not to involve the G7 in the SCS Dispute. Russian Prime Minister Sergei Lavrov, on April 14, also issued a statement that, while international law ought to be respected, Russia disapproved of internationalization of the dispute, stating, “Our position is determined by the wish, natural for any normal country, to see disputes resolved directly between the countries involved in a peaceful political and diplomatic manner, without any interference from third parties or any attempts to internationalize these disputes.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry reacted “by heralding the two countries’ converging position on the South China Sea”. A Fact Sheet released by the White House summarized the April 7, 2016 G7 Summit: “G-7 leaders reiterated their commitment to a rules-based order at sea, peaceful dispute settlement, and respect for freedom of navigation and overflight. G-7 leaders also reaffirmed the importance of states’ making and clarifying their claims based on international law [including the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea]; refraining from unilateral actions; not using force or coercion; and seeking to settle disputes by peaceful means including through juridical procedures.’”

On April 29, 2016 Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a joint press conference in Beijing declaring shared opposition to “interference from third parties” and “attempts to internationalize” the dispute. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that China and Russia should join together to oppose “internationalising” the disputes.

The purpose of the Bastion-P is to engage various surface ships, as well as carrier battle groups, convoys or landing craft. In some cases missiles fired from this system can strike surface targets. The Bastion-P launcher carries two P-800 Oniks/Yakhont and SS-N26 Strobile anti-ship cruise missiles, having a range of 300 km, with hi-low flight trajectory and 120 km with low-low flight trajectory. The warhead, weighing 200250 kg., can carry nuclear or conventional warheads.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated on May 23, 2015 that, “Russia would deploy top -of-the-line Bal and Bastion coastal defense systems — with ranges of up to 450 kilometers — as well as Russia's new Aeleron-3 drones. The apparent goal is to create an

Lavrov added that proposals for all directions of cooperation were being drawn up "with the goal to further deepen cooperation in politics, economy and humanitarian area." "Russia and China are priority diplomatic partners for each other within the framework of their strategic coordination. Our countries implement close interaction in the international arena. Russian-Chinese relations are an important factor in the world peace and stability. of the Kuril Islands involved in its dispute with Japan. The Matua Island base will hold 87 contract troops, 700 units of military equipment and weaponry, 60 new aircraft and helicopters, three vessels and over 20 drones. Based on a photograph released by Russian controlled state media, the warships were accompanied by nuclear-powered submarines. Days prior to the May 30-31, 2016 “Russia and China: Taking on New Quality of Bilateral Relations international Conference”, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated, “[W]e closely cooperate on the international arena, where our cooperation serves as a very important stabilizing factor. We will continue to jointly with the Chinese friends advance the necessary steps in order to ensure that our cooperation reaches new levels.” Page 93 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

At the conference, Western economic sanctions against Russia were deemed moot by Russia as it is looking to the East for economic growth and stability with China and Russia agreeing to increase trade from $90 billion in 2016 to $200 billion within four years. Calling the SCS Dispute a man-made problem “forged by the United States… both Chinese and Russian leadership understand that we are better together and we are not so worried about America and its attitude to this issue,” stated Boris Titov, cochairman of the Russian-Chinese Friendship committee and Russia’s ombudsman. Moreover, Russia and China have been engaging in joint naval exercises in SCS. According to the Russian press service, Russia and China commenced their first joint computer anti-missile defense exercises Aerospace-Security-2016. Russia and China will use the results to formulate proposals on Russian-Chinese military cooperation in the field of antimissile defense. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

The U.S. and France have bolstered their presence in the SCS. The Pentagon sent a guided-missile destroyer to maintain maritime rights. This was the third time in under a year that the U.S. has conducted freedom of navigation operations in the SCS. U.S. Freedom of Navigation (FON) Program, created in 1983 “…provides that the United States will exercise and assert its navigation and overflight rights and freedoms on a worldwide basis in a manner that is consistent with the balance of interests reflected in the Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention. The United States will not, however, acquiesce in unilateral acts of other states designed to restrict the rights and freedoms of the international community in navigation and overflight and other related high seas uses.” According to DoD spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Baldanza, on May 17, 2016, when the U.S. sent an unarmed U.S. military aircraft on routine patrol over the SCS, China responded with two fighter jets carrying out an interception at less than 50 feet forcing the U.S. plane to rapidly descent, which the Pentagon deemed unsafe. China insists that reconnaissance activities undertaken without prior notification and without permission of the coastal state violate Chinese domestic law and international law. The U.S. responded by stating that the UNCLOS does not negates the right of military forces of all nations to conduct military activities in EEZs without coastal state notice or consent. Days after Russia requested Vietnam permit it naval access, U.S. President Barack Obama visited Vietnam at which time a 50 year arms embargo was lifted, enabling Vietnam to obtain U.S. sourced radars and sensors, surveillance planes and drones to monitor and deter Chinese forces. The U.S. Navy has requested access to Cam Ranh Bay, the most coveted deep water harbor in the western SCS. If permitted, it would complement U.S. naval facilities in the Philippines on the SCS’ eastern edge.

Japan and Russia’s Kuril Islands Dispute Japan has been embroiled in a long-standing dispute with Russia over a portion of the Kuril Islands, an archipelago stretching 1,300 km or 810 mi, from northern Japan to Russia's Kamchatka peninsula, separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the North Pacific Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Ocean. As part of its territory, Japan claims the four ancestral islands; two southernmost and large Kuril Islands, Iturup and Kunashir, as well as the Shikotan and the Habomai Islets. On February 7, 1855, Japan and Russia signed the Treaty of Commerce, Navigation and Delimitation, which established boundaries in the Northern Territories. Japan lost control of several of its islands at the end of World War II, when they were claimed by Russia. Japan has rejected Russian sovereignty over the islands in a dispute that has come to be known as the Northern Territories Dispute. Japan does not dispute Russian sovereignty over the other Kuril Islands. As recent as this past April, Japan has engaged Russia in frequent but, unsuccessful dialogue in an effort to diplomatically resolve the conflict, going so far as to state that it would not displace Russians occupying the islands as Joseph Stalin did to the Japanese people. The U.S. supports Japan’s claim in the Northern Territories Dispute.

Page 96 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

“A conflict involving China over the East and South Seas was more likely than a Russo-Japanese conflict over the Kuril Islands/Northern territories,” stated Steven Pifer, Senior Fellow Brookings Institute Fellow, and former U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Officer. The Kuril Islands are salient based on Russia’s military build-up there. While Russia and Japan are not predicted to engage in armed conflict over the Northern Territories Dispute, the military buildup is nonetheless significant as it relates to the SCS Dispute.

Insecurity in the European Union Russia’s Methodology "Russia's interest in breaking up Europe is clear and it uses a variety of means, anything it can possibly do, to achieve its breakup," stated Russian scholar and analyst Anne Applebaum. Russia’s toolbox of hybrid warfare i.e. that without physical aggression, includes weaponising information; intelligence gathering; and cyber, political, psychological, and energy warfare.

Russia has been accused of cyber warfare in Estonia, the German parliament and in Bulgaria. Russia has backed the far right front in France, the Hungarian Jobbik, and the German AFD, and has secured the support of Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

Ukraine and Crimea Recent geopolitical tensions between the West and Russian can be traced to Russia’s annexation of Crimean Peninsula, which the West deems illegal, and its military aggression in Ukraine, which the West stands firm in stating that in so doing Russia failed to implement the pre-existing Minsk Agreement. Statements have recently issued from both sides. "The path NATO has chosen is one of strong deterrence combined with meaningful dialogue. There cannot be any return to business as usual until Russia comes back into compliance with international law,” stated NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow. Mr. Vershbow noted that ‘the first step toward that end should be the full implementation of the Minsk agreements – ending the Russian-backed insurgency in Eastern Ukraine, implementing a real ceasefire, withdrawing Russian forces and heavy weapons, and creating conditions for free and fair elections under Ukrainian and OSCE supervision aimed at re-integrating the occupied portions of Donbas into Ukraine.’

Ay the May 2016 G7 Summit, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and the European Union condemned Russia's "illegal annexation" of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine. In a formal declaration the G7 threatened "further restrictive measures" but indicated sanctions could be scaled back if Russia implemented the Minsk Agreement to respecting Ukraine's sovereignty. Mr. Putin responded by stating that, "As far as Crimea is concerned, we consider this question is

closed forever. Russia will not conduct any discussions with anyone on this subject."

The Baltic States, Poland and Romania On April 1, 2014 following the annexation of Crimea, NATO member nations unanimously voted to suspend all cooperation with Russia save essential diplomatic dialogue. Since then, Russia has conducted military exercises involving 30,00080,000 troops in close proximity to the Baltic region. “To the east and north we face a resurgent and aggressive Russia, and as we have continued to witness these last two years, Russia continues to seek to extend its influence on its periphery and beyond. We are prepared to fight and win if we have to ... our focus will expand from assurance to deterrence, including measures that vastly improve our overall readiness,” stated NATO Supreme Commander General Phillip Breedlove on March 31, 2016, just days after the conclusion of the Munich Security Conference. NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow said NATO is strengthening its deterrence and defence posture by implementing the Readiness Action Plan (RAP), which includes a 5000-strong Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, in response to a more assertive and aggressive Russia. Russia’s interest in the Baltic States is multifaceted. First and foremost, Russian President has stated over and over again that it is his responsibility to protect Russians, regardless of where they now live in the European Union. Russia, having allowed its Baltic Sea port of Kaliningrad to deteriorate has, until recently, relied Page 99 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

upon Baltic States’ modern and ice-free ports to transport its oil throughout Europe. The deployment of Iskander-M missile complexes in Kaliningrad will “fundamentally change the balance of security in Europe,” stated NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. NATO responded by bolstering its position in many countries flanking the Russian border. NATO is deploying 4,000 additional troops to the Baltic countries and to Poland. Another 4,200 troops are set to be deployed in early 2017. NATO has also just committed to sending four rotating groups of combat battalions to Poland. Despite NATO having voted to suspend cooperation with Russia, NATO members are complying with the May 27, 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act on Mutual Relations, Cooperation and Security between NATO and the Russian Federation (Founding Act), even though some NATO members believe it to have been violated by Russia. Under the Founding Act, significant numbers of troops cannot be permanently stationed in Eastern Europe. The Founding Act does not define “significant”. By rotating troops in the Baltic States or the East, Russia is deprived of the pretext of a Founding Act violation to engage in armed conflict. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

The “Visegrad Four” - the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia - have proposed to NATO that they create a common “rotational” force to bolster defence in the Baltics starting in 2017. Also in 2017, the U.S. military plans on an increased rotational presence in the East of up to 5,000 troops, including in both Romania and Bulgaria. A number of other countries have committed to or are considering sending troops to the Baltic Region and Poland; with the issue to be discussed at the July NATO Summit in Warsaw, Poland. A 2015 Rand study suggested the need for seven brigades, including three heavy armored brigade, to have a chance of stopping a major Russian offensive. This exceeds NATO’s present capacity. Moreover, such a force would appear overly provocative to Moscow, posing a potent ground offensive less than 400 kilometers from St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city. Also bypassing the Founding Act, the air forces of 16 different NATO member states have been actively securing the Baltic air space. There have been many incidents of these peacekeeping flyovers being improperly threatened by Russian fighter jets. “There should be no gaps. Deterrence must be the new normal,” stated Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas. If the rotational troops and increased air surveillance caused Russian ire, the U.S.’s recent activation of a land-based SM-3 missile defence interceptor or shield at its base in southern Romania, with a second defence system to be operational by 2018 in Warsaw, has only amplified the situation. The radar, similar to that on U.S. Navy warships, detects and identifies incoming missiles, then Page 100 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

launches interceptor missiles destroying the incoming missile in space. "To put it simply, our new missile defense architecture in Europe will provide stronger, smarter, and swifter defenses of American forces and America's Allies. It is more comprehensive than the previous program; it deploys capabilities that are proven and cost-effective; and it sustains and builds upon our commitment to protect the U.S. homeland against long-range ballistic missile threats; and it ensures and enhances the protection of all our NATO Allies,” stated U.S. President Barack Obama. Mr. Putin stated that Russia will respond to the U.S. installation of missile defence shields in Romania and Poland as they directly threaten Russian security.  What do we seek to achieve, even if not

supported by any multilateral effort? These goals define the minimum objectives of the national strategy.  What do we seek to achieve, or pre-

vent, only if supported by an alliance? This defines the outer limits of the country’s strategic aspirations as part of a global system.  What should we not engage in, even if

urged by a multilateral group or an alliance? This defines the limiting condition [of a country’s] participation in world order.  Above all, what is the nature of the val-

ues that we seek to advance? What applications depend in part on circumstances?” The West seeks to prevent the denigration or disregard of Rule or Law. It has done so through NATO, it member nations and their alliances and partners. This is and has been the driving principle for all actions it has undertaken in the Baltic Region, Western Europe, Ukraine, Crimea and the SCS. With the exception of Crimea, the West has unequivocally indicated it will go to war if provoked by Russia. “We are convinced unconditionally that the deployment of an antimissile defense system does indeed pose a threat to the security of the Russian Federation,” stated Russian Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.

Analysis Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger advised that, “To play a responsible role in the evolution of twenty-first century world order [each country] must be prepared to answer a number of questions for itself:  What do we seek to prevent, no matter how it

happens, and if necessary alone? The answer defines the minimum condition of the survival of society. Page 101 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

As to what Russia seeks to achieve, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has stated, that Russia wants to be treated as an equal partner in foreign affairs, especially in Europe, but that the European Union has failed attribute to Russia the credence that it feels due and justified. The reality is that Russia will never gain the acceptance of the European Union or the U.S. until it demonstrates adherence to Rule of Law. This tests the outer limits of Russia’s foreign policy initiatives. Nonetheless, given the powerful statements from the Kremlin, the European Union may yet be able to positively engage Moscow. After all, a Cold War is nothing more than failed diplomacy. current state, is not equipped to engage in deterrence let alone defence. In addition to the ongoing fight against terrorism and the distressing presidential elections in the United States, there is a lack of cohesion among European Union members impeding cooperative efforts with NATO and its other partners and alliances. These are the limiting conditions that the West cannot ignore.

New Development Bank, known as The BRICS, to which many foreign powers, save the United States, have acceded to one or both. China’s limiting condition is jeopardizing the many trade relationships it has built, not only with Western countries, such as Great Britain and the U.S., but with countries around the world. The reality for China it that if SCS aggressions continue, especially in tandem with Russia, it may destroy positive relationships.

An alternate and more plausible explanation is that Russia, expert of psychological warfare and the use of propaganda, has used the ruse of an attack on the Baltic States, Poland or Romania to deflect public attention away from the South China Sea Dispute.

A second reality, based on Mr. Kissinger’s decision -making tree, is that China continues its military build-up in the SCS, with or without Russia, and that those countries adhering to Rule of Law are forced by treaty to respond.

As for China, “There are a number of political and economic factors which militate against a military conflict, though the probability is not zero,” stated Mr. Pifer. China seeks to achieve a leadership role in global financial stability. It has strengthened its global financial position through the creation of the Page 102 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

As to joint Chinese and Russian military cooperation, while China and Russia have been bound to some degree by a shared ideology, it has thus far never extended to joint military cooperation or to an expansionist philosophy based on the use of force. In this scenario, diplomatic relations with China might produce a positive result, not just in the SCS, but China may influence Russian interactions elsewhere in the world. “The United States will make it clear that we are looking for a peaceful resolution to … the disputes of the South China Sea. Let’s not resolve this by unilateral action; let’s resolve this through rule of law, through diplomacy, through negotiation. And we urge all nations to find a diplomatic solution, rooted in international standards and rule of law,” stated U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during Sangri-La talks held on June 7, 2016 in Beijing. (Photo credit SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images) French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian urging other European Union members to undertake “regular and visible” SCS patrols, stated, “If we want to contain the risk of conflict, we must defend this right, and defend it ourselves.” Previously, the G7 members signed on G7 statements on maritime security and freedom of navigation. The necessary diplomacy might transpire at the G20 Summit - comprised of 19 individual countries—Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States—along with the European Union (EU) – to be hosted by September 4 to 6. While less than 100 days away, it provides ample time for all parties to re-evaluate the current diplomatic posture. India’s Prime Minister Narenda, following a visit to the White House, stated that it had no comment on the SCS Dispute. India struggles to meet the energy demands of its citizens.

Mentoring is the same. Missing small details or learning moments can have a negative impact on the ability for personal or professional development goals to be achieved. Mentoring is not a race. It is not a sprint to see how fast results can be achieved and a Return on Investment (ROI) acknowledged. It aligns more with being a marathon; the finish line or goal is set in the distance that you move forward to at a comfortable, but challenging, pace. Making pit stops along the way to check in and monitor your performance against the plan or roadmap at designated check points along your journey. Regardless of the timeline assigned for the dyad to work together, the journey to the goals and ROI’s should use the time from beginning to end effectively. quarter, semester or calendar year to put a checkmark beside the boxes that would signify that the pair successfully completed what they set out to do. With busy schedules at work, home, or in the classroom, finding the time to devote to mentoring can be difficult. Time may be limited due to geographical differences, re -prioritization of involvement in projects or a flux in seasonal demands of the workplace, classroom or lifestyle. As a result, the ability for mentors and mentees to flex their communication styles and schedules in order to make the best situation out of limited time is critical. for deep, reflective dialogue that is supported by the trust between the dyad so that discussions can be focused and each person is held accountable for their outcomes. Time is needed for a mentoring relationship to become established and familiar with each other, to implement change and provide learning opportunities, to create and grow the sense of trust and engagement. Time is also was appropriated to the activity to be completed? Mentoring is the same. Missing small details or learning moments can have a negative impact on the ability for personal or professional development goals to be achieved. Decreased engagement can result in the dyad’s desire to help and be helped dwindle if their time spent together is not providing value to each one of them. needed to work through barriers, learn, complete action plans and analyze current results against goals. Regardless if there is ample or limited time for the dyad to be engaged in development conversations, developing a process that maximizes the quality and quantity of information that is exchanged between the dyad can provide considerable value to the relationship.

I propose to solve this problem by highlighting the importance of quality time spent between the dyad. Time that allows Page 109 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Incorporation of six steps can provide mentors and mentees with a process that can keep a dyad focused on what their dialogues need to include. I utilized these steps in my own professional practice in order to keep myself, and others I was leading, accountable to ourselves and to each other.

6-Steps to Help Manage Your Mentoring Time In my previous columns, I discussed the importance of the dyad to include a frequency for meeting up with each other at define intervals. The preference is faceto-face dialogues, either in person or virtually if possible, as the probability that each individual is more engaged in the conversation versus being distracted is greater. Mentors and mentees may already communicate very well with each other; have open dialogues and use their time together to discuss their results, needs and next steps extensively. However, communication skills are stretched and tested when time is limited. Utilizing the six-step process below focuses mentoring time on exchanging quality dialogue.

effective and efficient allows them to model positive leadership and time management behaviors. This also reinforces the provision that the mentee is valued and are not a burden taking up a mentors time.

As Mentors traditionally lead meetings, following a process that is both

completed since the last meeting. Actions may range from acquiring knowledge or a particular skill, performing an activity that shows the growing breadth of the mentees skills, or the mentor providing answers to questions the mentee had asked. Action plans are created so that the dyad is continually moving forward towards their agreed upon goal or ROI. However, if actions are not being completed nor followed up on, goal attainment may be slow to impossible or leaning gaps may persist. Frustration, boredom or lack of desire may grow when there is no momentum is sense that the dyad is achieving success. By beginning a dialogue reviewing the status of action plans, it provides a sense that there is a focus on the shared accountability of the dyad to each other. Updates on open actions may require little to in-depth discussions based on timelines to complete or identification of barriers, but all open actions should be discussed. As actions are completed they are removed from the list. Actions that are open and outstanding (e.g. timelines missed) become visible. Lagging actions that are difficult to complete will be highlighted, making it easier for the dyad to identify if additional resources are needed or have a deeper dialogue into why there is a struggle to complete the actions. Page 111 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

2 Assess Current Status Against the Roadmap Assessment of the status of the dyad against the roadmap cannot be adequately completed if designated checkpoints are not included in mentoring discussions. Review of where the dyad has come from, how their results compare to their desired outcomes, and what is needed to continue to move forward against the roadmap provides a sense of whether or not the dyad is on track to achieving results. If barriers or roadblocks have appeared, these focused dialogues are the time for the dyad to identify them, discuss solutions and agree upon what actions are needed for them to detour around problems and get them back on track. 3 Self-Reflection Activity This activity is an opportunity for the Mentor to ask the Mentee questions for the Mentee to selfassess their actions, behavior and results since the last meeting. Selfreflection is a powerful learning tool as it allows for connections to be made between thoughts and ideas, feelings and behaviors. It becomes a critical skill so that mistakes are not repeated, they are learned from, and positive outcomes and behaviors are reinforced. Questions that can be asked include:  What activity learned/applied since the last meeting was most beneficial and why?  What was the biggest challenge or opportunity and why?  What result has made the biggest impact on personal or professional development and why?

4 Look Forward By looking forward into the future, the dyad can discuss plans or actions that are proactive, not reactive. Planning for vacation, company shutdowns, requirement to reserve external resources, and school or season holidays, can result in the absence of or minimal disruptions in results or actions when planned for. Page 112 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

5 Discuss and Record New Actions Based on the information exchanged during the dialogue, agree on what new actions are needed, if necessary, to remain on track to the roadmap. Confirm and agree upon the action plan, specifically who is responsible for completing what activities. Action plans may have multiple activities to them completed by one or both members of the dyad. What is important is that it is crystal-clear as to which member of the dyad is responsible for an action. Depending on the frequency of meetings, make due dates for action plans to be completed that are attainable. Rushing to meet unrealistic timelines puts pressure on the dyad, making results a race, and the potential for mistakes or gap to be created. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Time is a Luxury As communication within a dyad is multidirectional, time should be provided for both the mentor and mentee to provide feedback to each other. When I used this six step process, I received feedback that it was helpful in building confidence on how to give and receive feedback within a safe environment and I learned how I could better support my team. When time is a luxury and not always available, a dyad needs to be able to communicate effectively and use their time together wisely so that as much value is obtained from the dialogue. Moving forward towards achieving personal and professional development goals and ROI’s can only occur if there is a process for ensuring that actions to take are being identified and results are continuously achieved.

6 Provide Feedback As a dyad grows, the trust in the relationship should be providing the foundation for deep discussions to take place. Feedback is an effective development tool when it is centered on the desire to help the development of another and relayed in a manner that the receiver finds encouraging, not discouraging. Feedback should be specific and based on data or facts. Tangible facts make it easier to connect actions and results to knowledge and behavior, like the time when a mentee was confident during a presentation in front of senior leaders or missed timelines associated with a specific action plan.

The effectiveness of how communication occurs between a dyad is as important as what information is shared. When a structured process is used which allows for the right information to flow between a dyad and makes actions, follow-ups and accountability crystal-clear, a dyad is setting themselves up to remain on track for success. Utilizing time in the most effective manner possible, helps the dyad to remain consistent in their actions and achieving results. There is no point sprinting to the finish to get there and realize that you were running the wrong way. Mentoring success is a marathon event and comes from taking the time that a dyad has together and making it value-added for each individual. The growth and development of the relationship, and the results achieved along the way are not worth diminishing by not using time effectively to nurture development when opportunities exist. What's in a Word? We have all heard the saying that “a picture is worth a thousand words,” but what are the words themselves? What are their true meanings and are we really conveying the message we want to deliver through the them?

As an Online Presence and Social Media Strategist, one of the biggest oversights I see business owners make is not taking the time to understand keywords and how to use them to be found online. It may even be that they don’t know what a keyword is

If you were them, what words would you put into Google, Bing or any search engine for that matter, that would help you find what you are looking for? This is an important step in identifying your keywords.

What is a Keyword? Let’s start with a definition of what a keyword actually is. A keyword is a single word, or a grouping of words (also known as longtail keywords) which are used to describe or identify a topic or piece of content. Keywords are really search terms that help us find information on what we are looking for online. These words, or combination of words, have been identified as being used by our potential customers when they are seeking more information about a particular topic. We use keywords daily, without even

realizing it, when searching for something on Google, for instance. How the right word or combination of words can make a difference. Once you have determined what words (keywords) your prospects may be using to search for what you offer, you can begin to incorporate them within your online presence. By taking the time to understand your prospects needs, and how they would search online, you will begin to appear more often in the search engines. Just remember, while it is wonderful to show up on the first page of Google, if no one is searching for those terms, you are missing the boat...

People with the ability to influence are seen as leaders. They have developed skills that have turned their dreams into the dreams of others. Martin Luther King didn’t speak of his desire to execute a strategic plan in his speech in front of the Reflecting Pool in Washington DC that warm August day in 1963. He shared his passion for moving people toward a common goal that united a nation in a way few had dared hope. Dr. King’s passion was unquenchable. Not just because he wanted to see his dream become a reality but because he intimately understood the need for leaders to understand the responsibility of their role was to bring healing and awareness into the process. Healing and knowledge that allow the leader to grow as they lead- and to embrace failure and change so they can understand the needs of those around them. This becomes leadership that turns an idea into a vision that changes the world.

Passion is Contagious If you have ever been around someone who is on fire about their vision, you can’t help but catch the spark yourself. They become, without a doubt, the heartbeat of any cause or change or idea that moves people into action. The people that change the world and get things done

Page 128 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

aren’t individuals who hold themselves apart from the experiences of others around them. They don’t “look down from on-high” hoping to get credit or applause. Real leaders give their passion away to the people around them- they make that power contagious. When I first started to get involved in human rights cases and advocacy I was ready to respond to the “Bat Signal.” I’d put on my boots and cape and swoop in for the rescue. I misunderstood that leadership wasn’t about rescuing. I thought that change could Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

expected me to be. It took a major burn-out for me to realize it’s just not good enough for leaders to view their role as rescuers or conquerors.

only happen if I forced it- if I fought hard enough and long enough AGAINST others. I armed myself to lead others into battle I found that I was very short sighted in how these conversations were going to impact the relationships I had with people long term; and how it would affect my relationship with myself. To rescue I had to shoulder the burden and keep all that passion inside of me because without it I didn’t have the energy to keep going- to be the hero others (and honestly myself included) away. Page 129 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

I had forgotten to be contagious. I failed to give my power to others and to believe that I had enough- for me- for them- for the situation. I had cast myself in the one-dimensional role of superhero instead of understanding that those sticky situations that I was in were an opportunity to share a dream and make change a shared experience. What if I asked the questions that would lead to deeper relationships and build bridges between me and others around the table? Its wasn’t until I watched Dr. King’s speech from the beginning to the end that understood how I needed to include healing and awareness in what I was trying to do. To make change, I had to give my power

Power Is Service You see, power is about leading from behind-it’s not the cape and boots person who does this. Power that changes the world is much more humble. It sees itself as lifting others from underneath. Servanthood is sometimes thought of as a weakness. It isn’t – it’s the foundation for Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

reaching dreams that seem impossible because serving others lets us do the remarkable- to heal and to be healed. When Dr. King spoke of his dream, he was talking about healing a nation torn in two. His vision was about healing within his community and uniting people far beyond any law or dictate had proposed to date. He listened to his followers and heard their stories. He shared their story- he told his. And in doing that he created a bond that didn’t just define the issue- it made it seem as if every man woman and child were finally being heard. Making others your priority requires a confidence and a surety that inspires people to action. In my past, I know I failed to see the opportunity to do this with the people I was engaging. I looked across the table at the lawyers or managers that were fighting not to support my clients, and I missed the point entirely. You see, when I saw them as an obstacle instead of partners it meant that I could not serve them. I could not reach them- I could only defeat them. I couldn’t find how their experience and mine might be the same and where my role might show them a different way of doing things not just that they had done it wrong up until now. Making change and gaining a victory are not always in line with one another.

Once I realized that my real power in those rooms was the chance to make changes far bigger than winning a case -it shifted everything inside of me. I could see the hurt, the frustration, the defensiveness and the fear behind the actions of those around me. I could hear what they weren’t saying- and I could respond to that.

even though they needed to change their actions- we did not have to be enemies to see that done.

Power Is Humble Looking inside of why we do things the way we do them is frequently something we would rather avoid. If we look too hard we might see our failings and our belief in ourselves might take a hitwe might not be that great. The ability to reflect on who we are and what we believe is a significant part of distinguishing strong leadership. It’s what keep us from filling the room with ourselves versus filling the room with the potential for change. Strong leaders see change as a part of who they are and what is supposed to happen while they are influencing others. They know that in many ways the steps they take will affect their growth as much as it will roll out change for their team or organization. They know that their ability to listen and hear the stories of others has to build out who they are and what they believe. So they are careful and thoughtful about their approaches. Being that in tune with who you are can make the changes you want to see in your reality become possible. The outcomes became much more sustainable and meaningful because I was impacting the way they thought instead of fixing one situation at a time. That meant that the power I wielded made a difference beyond that room or conversation. It meant that Page 131 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The characteristics of listening and empathy are the first two pieces of the leadership puzzle in making change possible. leadership goals and style. What I’ve been talking about here are two parts of leadership that you may not have thought of as passion and power…let me show you. 3. Healing This might feel like a big jump here. How can healing be the goal of leadership? Isn’t that an individual responsibility? How can I be responsible in any way for you and your hurt? Yes, it is…you and I each have to seek to heal our failings and relationships. However, leadership that has the insight not just to take advantage of opportunities to heal but makes it a priority - can change everything. Once I saw that swooping in with my superhero mindset was shutting down my ability to reach into people’s lives beyond Page 133 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

that moment of rescue I

began to see that the more effort I made to focus on the quality of the relationship I had with them the more healing was possible. This doesn’t mean I required disclosure of their pain or even confirmation that there was any rift in the interacts they had with others in their organization or teams. I simply took my eyes off the goal of winning and put it instead onto the goal of impacting personal change for every person I encountered. Suddenly the idea that I was winning, and they were losing wasn’t appealing at all. Conflict morphed from stressful and adversarial to conversational and shared perspective. The rules didn’t go away, and the realities of some of the ugly that I was Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

there to address were still there- but my personal approach was much more about the people than the outcome. In a corporate setting or as an entrepreneur, you might think healing isn’t going to cut it. It’s too competitive or demanding of a background to make this kind of people-focused idea possible. Especially for women. To show compassion might put you at odds with others who value results; but what if it doesn’t? What if your ability to make people whole and to focus on that affects your team and your business in a way that motivates your team and keeps them close to you? What if being their leader helps them become whole? When we make it known that this is who we are and what we value we draw people to us. What’s the impact? Our teams and our organizations flourish..

4. Awareness I used to avoid mirrors. I didn’t want to look at that lumpy belly or the way my pants fit. It is very hard to look at ourselves when we are bracing for the failures we think we have or are. But knowing who we are is necessary if we are going to step into places that put us in charge of other people. This doesn’t just apply to the board room or office- it applies to every place we are with people including our personal lives and families. Self- awareness is critical to being effective change agents in the world. I was recently given the role of mentoring a young woman who came into our organization as Page 134 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

showed me that she had a lot of vulnerabilities, and it was communicated to me that it was my responsibility to support her growth. At first blush that might seem to you that clearly I had a lot to offer her, and it was my strengths, that identified me as her leader to others. Apparently they must have put me with her because of my more developed skill set. Here is where humbleness showed up for me. It was true that I had far more experience and ability than she did- my role was much bigger. It wasn’t so much that part of me Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Perhaps he would want someone new. Perhaps I wasn’t the right person. The issue was- he just didn’t have a “perfect” supervisor to offer this intern. It was me, and that was it- warts and all.

that was most valuable as her mentor. I had to stop and think every step of the way about what kind of impact I could have on her career development and if I was capable of leading her into growing her skills. To do that I had to be brutally honest about the places I needed to develop myself. I didn’t just need to look in that mirror I was avoiding- I had to admit that I had some lumps and some not so great parts. Admission that wasn’t necessarily private.

As it turned out my ability to look in that mirror and acknowledge that I wasn’t all put together became my greatest asset. I didn’t just put my skills in the room I put my gaps in the room too. I saw her in me and me in her. It built up our relationship in such a way that I grew as much (if not more) than she did. In the end, being her mentor put me in a place of self-awareness beyond what I would have willingly agreed to otherwise. I was forced to be vulnerable and honest with who I was. To be frank- I craved that growth in other places and I deliberately shared with people openly where I felt I might need support and where I was concerned I would not be able to succeed. Both awareness and healing are the results of a passion to lead and the power to change lives. In our offices and our businesses, our leadership is critical to our success but more than that it is a vehicle through which we are felt in the world. It is an expression of our values and our desires to be better people.

I shared my failing with the Chair of the organization since he was who I reported to. Page 135 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Reflection Questions: 1. Where in your career or life have you defined success as “winning”? How has that served you? How has “winning” impacted the relationships with people around you? Where might healing have produced a better outcome? 2. Is your leadership position dependent on other’s perception of you as accomplished and more skilled? How would being honest about your failings and potential shortfalls be perceived by those around you? 3. What would others say about your ability to “make them whole”? Would this approach fit into your organization’s culture? How would this change your point of view about success and teamwork? Start your journey and put your best self into your work and life. In the last article, Cirò Marina and Strongoli in Calabria were very much in focus. This will also be the case here, where Sergio Arcuri winery in Cirò Marina and Birrificio Blandino, a small brewery in Strongoli, are the local realities I will talk about in this article. Last summer I visited Sergio Arcuri together with my friend Gianfranco Blandino, the owner of the above-mentioned brewery. It was a very interesting and fun visit after a scorching hot day at the beach. This will be the first in a series of three articles about wineries and other interesting Page 140 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

places in Calabria. The idea was to write a series of three articles about wineries in this area of Calabria, but the third and last article I will only publish at the end of the summer after, hopefully, having visited there again.

About Gaglioppo The red grape with a big G in Calabria is, of course, Gaglioppo. It is a grape variety, which is considered to have its origin in Ancient Greece. Nowadays it is grown in the provinces of Crotone, Cosenza, and Catanzaro and it is one of the most commonly Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

used grapes in red wines in Calabria. Some say that it genetically is very similar to the Nerello Mascalese and Sangiovese while others claim that it has similarities to the Frappato. According to the regulations, Cirò DOC has to contain at least 80% Gaglioppo (until recently it was 100%). The rest can be max 20% of other regional red grapes or a mix of regional red grapes and max 10% of grape varieties such as Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Merlot.

Sergio Arcuri… …only produces wines based on Gaglioppo and he really turns the cultivation of this grape into an expression of terroir and tradition. When I visited Sergio last summer, and also when we spoke on the phone last week, he told me that the Gaglioppo is a difficult grape to cultivate because it is a bit wild to its character and it is very resistant to drought. It is a grape, which has a great need of sun and heat in order to ripen, thus it grows well in the quite dry and harsh soil of Calabria. Furthermore, it is a grape with a thin skin, which makes it very sensitive to rain. In general, it has Page 141 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

an intense ruby red color, a high alcohol volume (often over 14‰), and a rather “biting” tannin level and is suitable for aging.

Sergio Arcuri – A True Wine Artisan Wine production runs in the family since many generations in the Arcuri family, all the way back to the end of the 19th century when Sergio’s and Francesco’s great grandfather started out working the land and producing wine. Their own father Giuseppe (Peppe) started working with his father in the vineyard already at the age of 9 in the years around Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

World War II, thus learning the ropes and the techniques of a traditional wine grower. Even though Sergio’s and Francesco’s grandfather sold all the land he had inherited, their father Giuseppe wanted to continue the work as a wine grower and started buying up smaller plots of land. He bought one vineyard planted in 1948, another one planted in 1980 and the last parcel of 1,75 hectares they added in 2005. In 1973, Giuseppe opened his own small winery where he continued producing and selling the final product as cask wine. It is only since 2009, after a renovation and innovation of the winery, that Sergio and his brother Francesco run the small winery and now bottle the wine instead of selling it only from the cask. I believe they still sell cask wine to a smaller circle of clients, at least, I saw a guy pass by to buy some wine while I was there.

Love and passion... When you read the story of the winery, you can really feel that the different generations of Arcuri men have one thing in common, i.e. the love for the land and their vineyards where they grow Gaglioppo. This love and passion also shone through when Sergio Arcuri brought us to one of his vineyards, the Page 142 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

one dating back to 1948, a bit outside of Cirò Marina. We stepped right in among the vines where he showed us the grapes while he was talking vividly about the soil and vineyard, how they have an organic production, still use a hoe to work the soil, pick the grapes by hand, etc. While he was talking and gesticulating, I was tagging along behind him in between the vines, trying to catch everything he was telling me. Every now and then he got a bit too into the Calabrian dialect for me, so I had to turn with a bit lost look towards my friend to ask for clarifications or confirmations. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

It was amazing, though, to stand in his vineyard with the hills in the background and the sea in front of you. Calabria is such a beautiful region with its mix of wild and softer landscapes. Sometimes, if the weather is a bit gloomier, it feels like being in the middle of what a Mediterranean version of a Sturm und Drang picture might have looked like. At the winery When you enter the winery, you really feel like at home and like being in an artisan's small workshop where the products are crafted with great care. This winery could indeed be called the wine workshop of Sergio Arcuri, where the cement and steel vats each have their own place. When Sergio starts talking about the winemaking processes, the love for his wine and the craftsmanship he really puts into it clearly makes his eyes light up. He produces two wines: the rosé (rosato) wine Il Marinetto and the red wine Ciró Rosso Classico Superiore Aris.

Il Marinetto When making this rosato wine, the pulp only remains in contact with the grape skins in the open cement vat for a few hours. The skins are not pressed, he says he only extracts the best part of the wine must, which probably make the tannins much softer. Il Marinetto has a weak cherry pink Page 143 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

color and is somewhat limpid. It is a very fresh wine, with a taste of cherry as well as a tart taste, which evens out the heavy structure of the Gaglioppo grape.

Rosso Classico Superiore Aris We tasted a Cirò DOC Rosso Classico Superiore Aris 2012 in the bottle when we visited Sergio. He also let us taste the vintages 2013 and 2014 directly from the vats, as well as a bottled blend of 100% Gaglioppo 2013. The Cirò wine generally has aromas of plums, cherries, herbs, violet, spices, tobacco, and licorice. It has a warm and fruity taste, which is also fresh, savory, and structured. The tannins get softer with the aging of the wine. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Birrificio Blandino – An Artisan Brewery in Calabria In this article, I am using the word ‘artisan’ a lot. It is indeed a bit of a trendy term for the moment in Italy in order to describe, above all, small independent wineries that are organic and attentive to details. However, it also fits Gianfranco Blandino and his small-scale brewery that he started only 3 years ago together with his wife Erica in the center of Marina di Strongoli. In addition, Gianfranco has his small brewery workshop with modern machinery where he produces his beers without additives, preservatives, pasteurization, or filtrations. This makes the aromas and flavors much fresher and easier to perceive. Gianfranco produces 6 different beers, namely Denis, Janet, Amedeus, Eros, Fraden, and the recently launched Futura.

Denis, Janet, and Fradengolden hue and a delicate head. It is a light beer with notes of flowers and herbs as well as a These three beers are made with water, barley malt, hops, and yeast. Denis has a bitter aftertaste. Janet is a beer with an amber hue and fluffy head, which is similar to an American Pale Ale. Initially, you feel the flavor of citrus fruits, which is soon replaced by a more bitter taste. This beer pairs well with cold cuts and other snacks as well as barbecues and similar. Fraden is an aromatic and sweet beer with a copper-yellow hue. It can be paired with cheese and spicy food as well as with traditional desserts without chocolate.

Amedeus and Eros The ingredients in Amedeus are water, barley malt, hops, yeast, and chestnut Page 144 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

honey. It is a full-bodied and smooth beer thanks to the chestnut honey with fruity flavors and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Eros, on the other hand, is a bit more spicy beer thanks to ingredients such as orange peels, coriander, and cardamom. It is thus a very aromatic beer with a fluffy head.

Futura This is Gianfranco Blandino’s newest beer in his selection, and it is a bit particular because it is produced with hemp (cannabis sativa), which is normally cultivated for a more industrial use. There is a Calabrian association working towards a shorter supply chain for hemp and Birrificio Blandino is a part of their work. A couple of months ago, the local sommelier association in Cosenza had organized an evening event around the theme of products produced from hemp. Gianfranco’s Futura beer was a central part of this event and it was described as a beer with a golden hue, a fruity flavor, and an interesting and enjoyable bitter aftertaste by the sommelier Giuseppe Grosso Ciponte in the online journal Il Quotidiano del Sud.

Visit to Sergio Arcuri and Birrificio Blandino Sergio Arcuri is a small winery and I do not believe he has any wine shop, but you can just phone him and arrange for a visit and buy his wines directly on the spot. Gianfranco Blandino has a small shop next to his brewery, which in the summer months is open every day. Would you take a trip to Calabria I am sure they would be happy if you stop by to pay them a visit. Regarding Sergio Arcuri’s wines, he Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

My Wine Story

told me that he, apart from Europe, now exports to New York, Oregon and Los Angeles in the US, as well as to Japan. Language revision by Susie Holman.

From Sweden to Chianti From a small town in southern Sweden to the heart of Chianti and Florence in Italy, my journey started in Ystad, which used to be known as a smugglers nest during the Hanseatic Era, while today it is the place where the police inspector Wallander solves crimes. It is an idyllic small town by the seaside. My journey thus started in Sweden, bringing me to Florence a bit more than 15 years ago to do a Ph.D in history at the research institute of the European Union. After receiving my Ph.D. and teaching Modern History at the university for a couple of years, I decided to stay in Florence, Page 145 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

My interest in wine has always been there throughout my years in Italy, however it was only roughly 5 years ago that I decided to try out a sommelier course. I had seen an advertisement on Facebook about the local Fisar course in the center of Florence, and I thought it sounded very exciting. (Fisar is one of the Italian sommelier associations and they organize courses where you get accredited as a sommelier.) Therefore, I convinced a friend to come with me, even though she actually didn’t drink much and still does not. This turned out to be one of the best ideas I have had in recent years, as it brought us to discover a new and fascinating world of oenology, wine history, wine tastings, and much more. It all lead us to continue the course, attending all three levels in one sweep. For about three years now, I have been a sommelier and it is a genuinely fulfilling passion where you learn something new and meet interesting people in the Italian wine world almost every day.Fresh as a sommelier, I started elaborating my idea about combining wine and translation. Together with some fellow sommeliers from Fisar and a British translator colleague, we developed the concept Words & Wine. This one-day seminar on wine terminology in Italian and English was held in Florence nearly 3 years ago. I continued to develop this wine and terminology concept to better fit a translator-

dominated audience together with a couple of translator colleagues, changing the course name to Words at the Winery. The first of these seminars was held at the wine estate Il Borro (near Arezzo) in June 2014. In the autumn of 2014, we organized another Words at the Winery seminar at the winery Feudi di San Gregorio, near Avellino. During last year, I held smaller informal minicourses about wine in Tuscany and a wine tasting every now and then together with my fellow sommelier, Nadia Padrin, and for Fisar Firenze. At the moment, I am working on putting together a new seminar on wine terminology in English for translators and people in the wine and tourism sector. What it Means to be “House Poor”? Overcoming the Influence of HGTV and the Model Home Syndrome Feel Good Spaces A new series by Sherry Burton Ways, Author and Design Psychology Coach Page 153 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The late nineties early to late 2000’s had a huge influence on Model Homes Syndrome or to some known as the “house lust syndrome.” The consumer real estate need for bigger and better homes. Consumers wanted new appliances, new architecture, the shiny new objects! During this time, we as consumers began to get wrapped up in our homes and what people thought about them. When home prices go up and we start to use the equity to buy more homes and acquire more things. People purchased and lived in homes that they didn’t like just because they could. The rise of the HGTV decorating shows became very popular during this period. Unknown design stars became famous and we began this love affair with redesigning and decorating our homes just like “HGTV.” During the high economic times of the 90’s and early 2000’s, we emphasized style and trends and lost ourselves to our homes and home identity. We did not get to know our neighbors. We purchased homes in certain neighborhoods just because we could. Page 155 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

We bought homes that did not speak to us. I recalled one client asking me to design a dining room “just like the model home.” As a decorator I found myself retrofitting interiors into something that created a feeling that was manufactured by society. Through the years, I worked with a range of clients at different stages in their lives, budget constraints and socio economic statuses. However, I began to realize all of their concerns were the same. Everyone in my opinion was “house poor”- not economically but spiritually. They wanted homes that lacked emotional value and therefore, lacked monetary value. Page 156 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Recessions and financial setbacks are blessings in disguise. After 2008, we saw how the economy affected people and made us think about what we have. Financially upside down, many of us woke up in big homes with no personality. So we began to downsize and emphasize our basic wants and needs again. Now we see trends of consumers wanting small or tiny homes. Many are home-

owners are interested in purchasing smaller condos and apartments. Micro apartments are popular now in our urban centers.

Page 157 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

This phenomenon gave rise for me to write my first book in 2012, Feel Good SpacesDecorating Your Home for the Body, Mind and Spirit. In my book, I emphasized why creating a personal space is important. Never mind what the neighbors or family think. Your living space is about you not perfectly crafted model homes or HGTV approved interiors.

In my work I love helping people create homes of their dreams through creating a foundation for their spaces as a foundation, not an afterthought. I see an increase in the last 5-7 years in emphasizing spaces and interiors that flow and feel right. Successful environments that reflect who we are makes us house rich and not house poor.

Page 158 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

HGTV has since changed their programming and now produce shows that feature home renovations that emphasize lifestyle needs instead of aesthetics. What you see on TV is a story that has no end it. It is perfect only after embracing the imperfections. Your home is your personal space and you have every right to décorate it the way you want and in the best possible way you can. The way I see it… is to appreciate your home the way it is and make it better by adopting little changes to it. For example, play with your furniture, move around to see the best possible setting. Hang a picture of your cherished memory and so forth. Appreciate the little changes. Stop looking and start making your home YOUR mark of comfort. See what suits you or what makes you happy. Start from there. Page 159 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

From Sickcare to Healthcare: Your Most Powerful Ownership

There is so much talk about healthcare nowadays. But actually, it’s a bunch of politically charged arguments about sickcare and who will pay for it. Stop the circus.

confidence, movement, relationships, awareness, ambition, and everything that makes you who you are. Your powerful ownership of complete healthcare involves all tangibles and intangibles.

Let’s go back to the literal definition of healthcare, taking care of your health. Own it. It is the most powerful ownership you have.

We often hear about short term success in losing weight, quitting smoking, and running the first 5K. But the truth is, your new healthy habits last only until your next catastrophe hits – life has a way of doing that to us occasionally, right? With the overwhelming stress of stuff that happens in life, you will go back to your old unhealthy habits to mask the pain. Back to donuts, nicotine, shopping spree, or whatever else you use to fill the void somehow.

Your healthcare encompasses all that you are, do, and feel. It’s not just about your weight, blood pressure, and calories. It’s about you as a whole person – your emotions, nutrition, passion, creativity, fulfilment, stress, sleep, energy, Page 162 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

The modern culture of food, communication, transportation, and career pursuits are extremely hard on the mind and body. Many suffer with damaged health and do not know how to recover. Many others would like to prevent such damage but do not know how to make that happen. So much confusion and so many questions. There ARE answers! No matter where you are in your healthcare stewardship, you CAN and DESERVE to improve. Most conditions and diseases (I mean, 99.9% of them!) are preventable AND reversible! 27 BEST BANKS

N AMERICA And Why You Should Care Few have heard of the semi-secret bank headquartered in the 16-story glass and steel tower that soars into the ice blue sky above Basel, Switzerland. But the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), a former financial facilitator for Hitler’s Third Reich, stands today as the most powerful bank in the world. The bank for International Settlements is the central banker’s central bank and as such sets the agenda and dictates to the 60 major central banks of the world - this includes the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, the People’s Bank of China, the European Central Bank, the National Bank of Russia and the 56 other central banks on the planet. Exposing the BIS and its current “Bail in” agenda, which enables failing banks to confiscate their depositor’s money and convert it to bank stock, has served as the basis for recent books by former banker and Hollywood money manager to the stars, John Truman Wolfe. Page 167 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Documenting the fact that the U.S. banking Goliaths, B of A, Citibank, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, are contaminated with hundreds of trillions of dollars of derivatives - what Wolfe refers to as “fiscal anthrax” - he felt it important to provide readers with choices and information about alternative banks in which they could place their money – banks that are safer, more secure and better managed. Bail in policy was implemented for all European banks on January 1, 2016. Canadian banks became subject to bail ins on March 22, 2016. In December of 2012, the FDIC and the Bank of England quietly issued a joint memo on how Bail ins would work in their respective countries. Wolfe sees a banking crisis on the horizon, a crisis that will bring Bail ins with it. The material in Wolfe’s new book gives readers ways to protect themselves by placing their funds in one of the 27 Best Banks in America. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Were You Told it Was Bad to

Blab? By Tracy Repchuk I don’t know if you remember as a kid you were told to NEVER blab. The definition of blab is to reveal secrets by indiscreet talk. Well there’s a new social media service in town now and it’s making it essential to blab your business. Blab.im is taking the social media and marketing industry by storm, and it’s a tool that has warranted the high praise it’s receiving. If you haven’t tried it - it’s time you did. The good news - it is so easy to get started your mom could do it. (I was going to say child and realized they were born to blab.) Blab connects to your Twitter account and is a video streaming conference calling system on steroids. If you combined the power of a conference call, with the interest of a webinar, and the interaction of a radio interview making it easy to connect with your audience - you would have blab. Page 174 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

It’s a desktop based platform where you sit at your computer and join in on the fun. You need to create a blab.im account which is free and is connected to your Twitter. For anyone who hasn’t adopted Google Hangouts because of the steep learning curve, this is for you. To get started you simply go to the website and pick a blab program to listen to. And if you are brave, click to join in the conversation and if the host is accepting guests - boom you have just received exposure to their audience. It’s one of the greatest ways to leverage an audience out there, and demonstrate your skills by answering questions or giving feedback. Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

And putting on your own blab event is also simple - and it allows you to open the forum and have people ask you questions. I would highly recommend you experiment on your own first though, playing with each of the features before you start inviting a live audience. An audience may find you - just label it - Testing the System and most people know to stay away or they will jump in to help and guide you. It’s a great community. It’s incredibly engaging, and so superior to the normal webinar or interview structures. It’s like a 4 panel TV screen with multiple people talking, or you can lock those windows and have it just be you if you want. One of my favorite things with Blab is the ability to send some social media love to the person who is chatting. Kind of a virtual ‘props’ system by clicking on the hands and conveying your appreciation.

Page 175 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

You can see it when you are the host and it’s as much fun to give them as it is to receive them. One of my favorite things with Blab is the ability to send some social media love to the person who is chatting. Kind of a virtual ‘props’ system by clicking on the hands and conveying your appreciation. You can see it when you are the host and it’s as much fun to give them as it is to receive them. Some of the key things to remember when you are going to do your own blab are; 1. Optimize your headline with the use of a popular #hashtag. Many people may share your tweet so maximize your exposure effectively. 2. Blab allows you to record several hours of video which you can upload to Youtube in Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

just one click, or upload as a Podcast - creating more reach instantly. 3. Whether you are an individual, personal brand, or company there are ways you can use blab. Here’s what I recommend to my clients. For individuals - it’s a great tool for quick, scheduled or informal video chats that you can use for a variety of reasons, including: Profiling and discussing a subject you are an expert on Adding to your normal marketing efforts such as blogging and making it way more interesting with live interaction Q&A, and ability to apply SEO strategies Demonstrating your skills live 4. Creating a series to keep people engaged week after week 5. To tease an upcoming segment or event 6. Covering a breaking news story or something relevant in your niche 7. interviewing and profiling other experts or complementary people in your field 8. Educating and training on your programs and services Blab is especially great for authors and speakers to offer themselves as an expert on the topic of their book or niche to other blabbers 9. Podcasters can use it for engaging with listeners and rebroadcasting later on itunes Industry thought leaders and coaches can host an Ask Me Anything session and highlight their skills in a live scenario Page 176 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Companies and Brands can use Blab too. Many of the same options can be leveraged as the individual, such as interviewing, breaking news, teasing, demonstrating skills, education, and adding to blogging for additional SEO strategies, however company based activities are usually more scheduled. Some of the best ways to leverage blab are; 1. Do live coverage of brand based events or conferences you are putting on or are a part of 2. To provide behind-the-scenes footage for - Product launches - Promoting job openings and attracting talent - Media appearances - Virtual press events - Employee volunteer activities and featuring - Major announcements - Fun promotions - Meet the CEO Just use your imagination and simply understand this is an easy to use broadcasting communication tool for you and your business. So if you’re ready - connect with me on blab and start your own conversation today. http://www.blab.im/tracyrepchuk Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

She knew full well if she faltered, Frankie would happily step in to take her place and, in a moment, she would lose all control and command of the team she had worked so hard to build and protect. Her team had come to trust her implicitly. She held full sway over all important decisions made and almost minute to minute kept herself on high alert in order to continuously move her team into the best strategic positions for forward progress. When a windfall opportunity presented itself to consolidate and secure a position for the group in the relative safety of a wildlife preserve run by Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

world-renowned conservationist, Lawrence Anthony, she seized it. Footnote: (The full story can be found in an engaging book entitled: The Elephant Whisper. ) The elephant herd over which Nana was matriarch was finally in relative safety and could thrive Conversely, Qumquat and her family did not fare as well. While internationally renowned fine art photographer Nick Brandt memorialized her in a stunning photographic portrait, this magnificent elephant and two of her children were killed by a fierce enemy -– a poacher. We all need to be competent executives managing our day-to-day lives, whether you are leading a herd of elephants, or running a family, a job, a department or a company. And survival is what it is fundamentally about. Not the crude definition of survival – barely eking out an existence – but rather, how to obtain real survival, which includes thriving with abundance in all areas of your life and for all that are connected with you – from your mate, to your children, your extended family, friends, business associates, other life forms and every aspect of the world around you. This is a Life Assisting Life approach to living – a method for better survival taught by the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization (LAEO). “Whether we are working with industry leaders or children, indigenous tribes or government regulators, LAEO helps people understand that no life survives alone. This better connects everyone with the natural world, resulting in more constructive decision-making and workable solutions. We take an educational approach that brings about life assisting life instead of life clashing with life. Page 179 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

We named this field of environmental science, Cooperative Ecology , and it guides every choice, decision, and strategic plan we make,” said LAEO’s Senior VP & Science and Tech Committee Coordinator Diane Wagenbrenner. Some of LAEO’s “Co Eco” lessons prompt selfexamination: How does each of us survive better? The answer? Start by simply looking! Look around yourself and decide to be more aware of the condition of people and things around you. Then find something you can do to make it a little better; to bring things into a little better harmony with the rest of the world; to help life co-operate a bit better with the rest of life. “Co Ecoing” some area of a person’s existence, whether that part of their life is relatively insignificant to them or is vitally important to their survival, is a fulfilling endeavor. A truly stellar example of this on a grand scale is Nick Brandt's extraordinary undertaking to stop the poaching of elephants in the Amboseli eco system in Kenya and Tanzania, and to bring the local villagers into better harmony with the natural world around them. Since 2001, Brandt has been documenting the vanishing natural world and animals of East Africa through his haunting, majestic photographic portraits of elephants, giraffes, lions, gorillas, rhinos, and other large mammals. Returning to Africa to continue his work, he repeatedly found that magnificent wildlife he had photographed in earlier trips had since been poached or needlessly killed. He became painfully aware of the urgent crisis facing wildlife conservation in East Africa.

View INHERIT THE DUST Subscription link www.female-exec.com/s.html

Deciding to do something about it, he joined forces with world-renowned conservationist Richard Bonham. Together, they formed Big Life Foundation, raising the necessary funds to hire and train rangers and provide the needed outfitting for stable outposts including buildings, uniforms, tents, food, Jeeps, and weapons. Big Life has empowered over 350 Masaai rangers from nearby villages. As a result, poaching has been dramatically reduced to almost zero in an area covering over 2 million acres.

But the story does not end there. Three years after the conclusion of his African photographic book trilogy, On This Earth (2005), A Shadow Falls (2009), and Across the Ravaged Land (2013), Brandt returned to East Africa to photograph the escalating devastation to the continent’s natural world. In a series of epic panoramas, he recorded the impact of mankind in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do. In each location, Brandt erected a life size panel of one of his animal portrait photographs, setting the panels within a world of explosive urban development and toxic wasteland. The arduous months of production to create each work resulted in stunning panoramas published in an oversized volume entitled Inherit The Dust in March 2016 that includes two incisive essays by the artist. Accompanying exhibitions featuring large-scale prints are being held at prestigious galleries in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Berlin, among other cities. Page 180 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

On April 20th of this year, the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization (LAEO) held a celebratory Earth Day event at the Fahey/Klein Gallery showing of the Inherit the Dust Exhibit in Los Angeles. Brandt was presented LAEO’s Elephant Whisperer Award for his extraordinary accomplishments as an artist, humanitarian and conservationist. Local LAEO members were able to meet Brandt, view his exhibition, and participate in a Q & A about his work to discuss solutions for bringing better cooperation between all life. Brandt’s Big Life Foundation story is worth connecting to at BigLife.org. Co-founded in 2010, this nonprofit has proven to be one of the most successful conservation programs in the world, dealing with conflict issues between man and elephant. While Earth Day seems to bring mostly bad news pushing negative messages about the many things wrong with our planet, we encourage people to focus on what is working, what is going right, and what can be done to make it better. Female Executives like Nana serve to set an elephant example for Cooperative Ecology Living. It is time more people Co Eco-ed their lives! Author’s note: In 2012, Qumquat fell to a poacher’s bullet. Nana still lives in peace with her herd at Thula Thula private wildlife reserve and can be seen there on the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s extraordinary Eco Safaris to South Africa. In 2009, she got a cataract, and Frankie promoted herself to Matriarch of the herd. Barbara Wiseman is the Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s International President. We are going to utilize this wonderful opportunity to present interesting educational information so that you can play an even bigger part in preserving and protecting Earth’s waters and all life through the daily choices you make. We want to bring practical information to you. We are not about spreading bad or scary news, but about spreading constructive news and information. Yes, we talk about the problems, but, also, about technologically sound and easy-to-implement remedies and answers. We want to actively engage with you, and other like-minded groups and organizations, to multiply those who are beneficially influencing the direction of our society’s culture, and to promote practical and realistic environmental solutions. When I co-founded The Earth Organization with Dr. Lawrence Anthony, we wanted to bring a new brand of environmentalism to the world described under a term we coined: Cooperative Ecology ™ .

GRACE PERIOD

My Ordination to the Ordinary

uthor of Skywater elinda Worth Popham

Author Melinda Worth Popham left home for Yale Divinity School at age fiftysix after a barrage of painful life events-above all, the nightmare of her teenage daughter's lifethreatening depression. These events brought her to her knees, and a monastic method of meditation became her mainstay as well as her portal to the holy.

This memoir, Grace Period, tells the story of one mother's experience of a daughter's intractable illness and the discovery that pain is the Miracle Gro of spiritual growth. The radical, mystical

Page 191 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

experience that ultimately propelled Popham to Yale Divinity School at a pivotal juncture in her life did not lead to the pursuit of latecall ordination to the ministry, but quite simply to her study of God. What she discovered, though, in the course of her two years there, was that, for her, encountering God happened beyond the study of theology at an Ivy League seminary. It came from her extracurricular encounters with offleash dogs, a shining meadow, bad neighbors, and fierce loneliness. Grace Period is not only about Popham's study of God, but about God's education of her.

Get Back Up

From the Streets to Microsoft Suites

GEORGE A. SANTINO with M.J. Beaufraud

An Inspiring and Often Humorous Rags-to-Riches Story With rare humor and the instincts of a born storyteller, George A. Santino describes his rise from rags to riches through a series of adventures that begin in Philadelphia's violent Tasker Street projects where he dodges his alcoholic father's fits of temper, fishes for rats, and sells tomatoes from the back of a truck. His escapades continue as he opens a sports bar with no walls in North Tampa, curses out a drill sergeant in Fort Jackson, and battles a hiring manager to get a job in Menlo Park that he fully intends to turn down. Page 193 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Santino's adventures culminate when he enjoys a long, successful career with Microsoft, builds a family, loses (and regains) a small fortune along the way, and triumphs over a freak spinal injury that doctors predicted would prevent him from ever working again before his thirtieth birthday. Throughout, Santino shares his perspectives on business and mentorship and stresses, by example, his central lesson: No matter what life throws at you, get back up.

What Does NAFE Mean to Me By Joan E Wakeland, Riverside Nafe Director This is an organization of Female Executives, Women Business Owners that dedicated for the advancement of women. We believe that this can be done through Education, Mentoring, Training Skills, personal development and public advocacy. I enjoy being a NAFE Member! Although not a Social Club the organization can be described as a Sisterhood or Sorority! You are able to help & support others by providing needed resources. I am able to associate with women who are caring individuals, women who are committed to serving rather than being served!

These coaches are dynamic individuals who make an impact on the lives of others! I have had the pleasure of seeing metamorphosis occurring in people who exhibited fear, lack of confidence, lack of knowledge make a big change! I have also been taught many lessons ! I was taught how to be a social Butterfly because of NAFE,I created the hashtag "free to fly" after encouraged to tell my story. I have become more bold yet not ever wanting to hurt or abuse anyone. I have met some individuals that are influential that I don't think our paths have crossed if it were not for NAFE! I earned awards for Volunteering, NAFE gave me exposure! Humans like to belong, NAFE is the Community that provides that environment of a Tribe doing teamwork so that everyone wins!

NAFE Think Outside the Box!

Click and Watch the Video

We need business women and professionals to get involved with helping each other to grow, I have seen this happening in NAFE! It is great to see the transformation that occurs in individuals because of exchanging ideas, the sharing of best practices and mentoring. Individuals are empowered by the lessons they learn from Life Coaches. Page 199 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive
