Message From the Editor he higher you climb, the more people you will have trying to drag you down. The better you get, the more critics you will attract… that’s life. Critics are drawn to Success, not because they are interested to learn from it, not because they want to know how to create some of their own…but because deep down they know they don’t have it. Don’t let their shade block your light. Don’t let their words, which are based around their own fears and limitations, stop YOU from going after what YOU want. Don’t ever let the opinions of others stop you from living the life you know you are capable of.”

business with one another but rather they do so willingly) that’s the only reason why they should buy from you…or from me…or from anybody. The good news is that the entrepreneur or salesperson who can genuinely move their focus off of themselves and onto their prospect – that’s the person who is most likely going to create the sale. Value is The Foundation In Law #1 of John David Mann’s and my book, The Go-Giver, we introduce The Law of Value, which says, “Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.” But, does that mean you don’t make a profit, or even that you lose money? Obviously that wouldn’t be a productive way to run a business. It would actually be a recipe for bankruptcy. And that wouldn’t benefit anyone. No, it doesn’t mean that. Shifting your focus from getting to giving (“giving” in this context meaning constantly and consistently providing immense value to others) is not only a more pleasant way of conducting business; it’s the most financially profitable way, as well. But isn’t that naïve? Not when you consider that your prospective customer or client is not going to buy from you because you have a quota to meet, because you need the money, or even because you’re a really nice person. No, they’re going to buy from you only because they believe they’ll be better off by doing so than by not doing so. And, in a free-market based economy (freemarket meaning that no one is forced to do Page 18 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

So, let’s dig a bit deeper and define the word, value. Actually, let’s first explore the difference between the words, “price” and “value.” Price is a dollar amount, it's a dollar figure. It’s finite. Value, on the other hand, is the relative worth or desirability of a thing, to the end user or beholder. In other words, what is it about this thing; this product, service, concept, idea that brings so much worth, or value to someone that’s they’ll exchange their money (or time, energy, etc.) for it and be very glad they did? This while you make a very healthy profit.

A Real-World Look Let’s say you eat at Ernesto’s Italian Café, a fairly high-priced and upscale restaurant. From the moment you walk in you’re made to feel like a VIP. You’re greeted with kindness and respect; you feel right at home. Your wait-team is professional, friendly, handles themselves with class and has that way of knowing when you need their attention and when to leave you free to enjoy your meal and your company in peace. The food is amazing and the presentation spectacular. The ambiance is wonderful, and the entire experience is absolutely superb. As you leave, the door is held open for you and you are thanked and bid farewell by everyone on the staff whom you pass. Your bill was certainly higher than at most restaurants. But you didn’t mind because the overall experience was worth much more to you in value than what you paid. Yes, while the price was $150 the value you received was ten times that.

And, the key is that shift in focus. It means that rather than being focused on the money you’re focused on providing massive value to your customer. Know that “money is an echo of value.” As such the value must come first. The money you receive is simply a natural result of the value you provide. ------------------------Bob Burg is a Hall of Fame Speaker and recognized authority in referral-based selling. He is coauthor of the international bestselling business parable, The Go-Giver (more than 955,000 copies sold in 28 languages) and the sales classic, Endless Referrals. All-told his books have sold close to 2 million copies. Bob’s website is www.burg.com where you can get a free chapter of all of his books. For information on his online video course, “Endless Referrals: The Go-Giver Way” visit https:// endlessreferrals.com/online-video-course

The restaurant owner, Ernesto, gave you significantly more in value than he took in payment. However, his costs for providing the meal, including staff, equipment, space, and food, were much less than what he paid so he made a very healthy profit. Giving more in value than you take in payment doesn’t mean you don’t make a profit. It means you and the buyer both make a large profit…because you both come away better off afterwards than you were before. This is actually the essence of a free-market based exchange. It’s up to you and your team to communicate that value through everything you say, do, and are. Page 19 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

From Breaching Doors to Breaching Limits

Get ready to man up. Today is the first column from Confidence Unchained and today you and I will be getting to know each other. The mission for you for today is this; you will come away understanding the type of men I work with, who I am and what exactly I do for you. Before we get into all that I’m going to address some questions I get quite often about confidence. How can I be more confident? How can I learn the skills of being confident? What can I do to show more confidence? I have bad news for you guys. Confidence is not skill, it's not something you can learn and it's not something that you can obtain. Here’s the secret... confidence is in the actions that you take, the things that you say , the actions you don't take and in the things that you don't say. Confidence is not something you can gain or grab ahold of. It's a way of being or how other people perceive you. Whether in the way you speak, the way you move or the way you hold yourself in a conversation. You can't gain confidence, you can't obtain it, you can't learn it. Through practicing different skill sets and different techniques and owning who you are authentically , you will exude confidence that most people never get a chance to show. Right here in this ongoing conversation that is what we are focusing on. These different skills and techniques that will take you, a successful man, to operating at your Peak Performance. That is the overall goal of this conversation. To share these tools and techniques with you. The type of men that gravitate towards working with me are business owners, executives and entrepreneurs. Men that are doing something with their life. I work with people that are already hauling ass down the Highway of Life. I don't work with someone that's broken down on the side of Page 42 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

the road with a flat tire and no idea how to change it. I don't take men from 0 to 60, I take men from 60 to 100. Those are the type of men that I work with. Men that are ready to learn, ready to fine-tune your skills. Some of you have put in work on yourself. If you own your own business, you're an executive or you're an entrepreneur you have reached a certain level of success. There are also areas in your life you need to fine tune. In your personal life, your emotional well-being or maybe your health is falling behind. You are going to understand all these different aspects as we move through the next several conversation pieces. When you can admit that you need help you are ahead of the curve. Whether in your personal life, business life or a combination of the two. Realizing when you have something that needs to be adjusted is key. We all have blind spots. If you are a successful man looking to fine-tune yourself. Stay tuned because this is for you. Who am I? My name is Justin and I'm going to be your guide on this mission to attain your Peak Performance and to sharpen your EDGE. I am the Peak Performance Consultant for Confidence Unchained; a personal consulting company that takes you from mediocrity to operating at your peak performance. I've spent 14 years in law enforcement and have achieved a wide variety of experience. Early on in my career working in gang intelligence, moving on into policing and becoming a training officer for new recruits. I quickly moved into investigations as a Detective and I spent several years as a member of the SWAT team. I held leadership positions such as Patrol Sergeant. Today I continue to teach classes to law enforcement on interview interrogation techniques and leadership skills. In every aspect throughout my career I've been a mentor. Page43 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

From that experience I created a specialized one-on-one training program for men that involves you learning these tools and techniques Law Enforcement Officers use, Detectives use, the SWAT teams use. You will learn to apply them to your life to take you to the next level of Peak Performance. I’ve taken my skills from breaching doors to breaching limits and those limits are what's holding you back. I'm upfront and blunt. I'm used to breaking in doors to let the rest of the SWAT team in. Being the first guy up there and saying “Knock-Knock.” I'm going to tell you how it is. I don't care if I hurt your feelings. It’s my job to hurt your feelings and point out some shit that you didn't know was there. That's what I do. That's what I bring to the table. You have these other coaches out there that are full of hot air and tell you nothing but fluff. Working on these tools and techniques is going to be uncomfortable at first. You're not used to this stuff. Some of this is brand new information that you’ve never heard before or new ways of looking at these techniques. I'm going to be that blunt instrument hitting you in the forehead. Saying, “Hey man do you want to fix this or do you want to continue down that dark road you’ve been traveling on?” Page 44 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

That's what I bring to the table with Peak Performance Consulting. Wherever you want your life to go you can get there. You have to be willing to put in the work. You will build that resilience and emotional fortitude. The ability to recover quickly from setbacks, disappointments and failures. Buckle up for it or if this of fends you, walk away . Go read a different article. For those of you that need that blunt instrument to get you in gear this is where it's at. It's my job to point out the issues that no one dares calls you out on. You can learn to destroy those limiting beliefs and break those things down. You create your own reality with the things that you say, the words that you use, the actions that you take. Some of these limiting beliefs you can carry around for years and decades. The men I work with operate under these 3 codes Integrity: Do what the hell you say you will do just because you said it. Read that again. Integrity is paramount and a lack of integrity is contagious. If you can't hold yourself accountable to the things that you say are you going to do, how can you hold anyone else accountable? You need to get to that point because if you can't hold yourself accountable, nobody can help you. Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

Take Action: Sounds simple right. You must do difficult things often. Be ready to be uncomfortable. That's where you learn things and sharpen your EDGE. Stay in that uncomfortable Zone learning new things, experiencing new things and doing difficult things often. Practice these techniques and skills when they don't matter . When it comes time to operating at Peak Performance, when it does matter , it will be second nature. Action kills fear. Be Authentic: Sounds like one of those fluffy terms. Do and say what you want because you choose it, not because it's what looks good or sounds good. I don't allow that shit. Get down to the bottom of it. Major League Baseball is set to return. The MLB Players Association (MLBPA) informed the league Tuesday that players will comply with commissioner Rob Manfred's imposed outline for a 60-game 2020 season. Players are set report for another version of "spring" training on July 1, and the regular season will start either July 23 or 24, the league announced. The two sides also finalized coronavirus health and safety protocols on Tuesday night. Here's part of the league's statement announcing MLB's return: The health and safety of players and employees will remain MLB's foremost priorities in its return to play. MLB is working with a variety of public health experts, infectious disease specialists and technology providers on a comprehensive approach that aims to facilitate a safe return. MLB has submitted a 60-game regular season schedule for review by the Players Association. The proposed schedule will largely feature divisional play, with the remaining portion of each Club's games against their opposite league's corresponding geographical division (i.e., East vs. East, Central vs. Central and West vs. West), in order to mitigate travel. The vast majority of Major League Clubs are expected to conduct training at the ballparks in their primary home cities. Commissioner Manfred said: "Major League Baseball is thrilled to announce that the 2020 season is on the horizon. We have provided the Players Association with a schedule to play 60 games and are excited to provide our great fans with Baseball again soon." MLB owners voted unanimously Monday night to have Manfred mandate a season. In a statement, Manfred had requested that the players respond by 5 p.m. ET so that the league could proceed with scheduling that imposed season. The league and players failed to reach a modified agreement for a Page 56 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

2020 season after weeks of negotiations and Manfred had the right to impose a schedule thanks to a deal the two sides struck in March. The negotiations about a return-to-play plan stalled when it came to the length of the season and the financial compensation players would receive. The union's ability to file a grievance against the league, which could result in a substantial cash windfall, also became a matter of importance later in the talks. Originally, the league had submitted a 67page proposal outlining all the safety and testing protocols that would be installed this season. Little else had been leaked about negotiations concerning those regulations, though the two sides were suggested to be closer than not, with the league bending to players' requests for greater access to medical and training equipment. It's worth noting that 40 MLB players and staff members reportedly tested positive for the novel coronavirus in recent days. MLB has also reportedly ordered all spring training sites to be closed and sanitized, and personnel must test negative for COVID-19 before being allowed to return. Here are seven other things to know about the 2020 MLB season.

1. Format of regional schedule finalized The exact schedule still needs to be made, but we know the structure of it. Every team will play 40 games against divisional foes (or 10 apiece) and 20 interleague games against the geographical equivalent. The Nationals, for example, will play all their games against NL and AL East teams. 2. Teams to submit 60-player rosters; will open with 30-player rosters Predictably, things are going to move at a rapid pace. That includes teams submitting 60-player rosters for big-league spring training, with that list due to the league office by Sunday at 3 p.m. ET, according to The Athletic's Jayson Stark. Stark added in a subsequent tweet that teams don't have to invite all 40 of their players on the 40-player roster to camp, but that those players must be paid regardless of their invite status. Once the season begins, teams will be allowed to carry 30 players on their active roster. That number will drop to 28 after two weeks, then 26 after four weeks, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

every half-inning in extras. You can read more about that here. 4. Transaction freeze to end this week On a related note, teams will be able to make transactions again beginning Friday at noon, per Stark. Between that and the subsequent 60-player submission deadline, it's possible that baseball sees its first trades in months before the end of the week. 5. Trade deadline will fall in August Speaking of trades, MLB will have a trade deadline this year after all. Instead of falling on July 31, it'll come a month later, on August 31. Unlike in most years, that will represent the midway point of the season. 6. COVID-specific inactive list According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, MLB will have a COVID-19-specific inactive list that players will be placed on if and when they test positive or show symptoms. There will be no set amount of time for the player to sit out, unlike the injured list, which requires hitters to miss at least 10 days. 7. Unsigned players head to Nashville? Here's perhaps the most surprising element of the details revealed so far. Per Stark, MLB has talked with the city of Nashville about hosting two teams of unsigned players who would be paid to remain in shape as potential replacement players, should the need arise during the season. Teams would then have to pay to add these players. It's unclear exactly who would be involved and how it would work, but it's worth knowing that it's a possibility being discussed.

3. Universal DH among rule changes MLB will have at least two rule changes this season: a universal DH (yes, that means pitchers will no longer hit in the NL) and a baserunner placed on second at the start of Page57 M The Magazine for Today’s Male Executive

crackers to steal classmate’s information. He quickly figured out how to use an electronic ham radio device to make free, long-distance calls, becoming an early phone “phreaker” before getting caught and earning a one-year probation for this early misdeed.

It’s important to know who Kevin Mitnick is to understand the who, what, and why that took him down – and he needed to come down. His illegal cyber activities had potential to do more harm than anyone could imagine. He belongs in the annals of computer security history, but not for good reasons one would hope to aspire. His story is fascinating. He wasn’t the best, or the worst, but he’s become the most well known. And he’s made a lucrative career of it. It is a story that has, and will, continue to be repeated by innovative cyber cowboys, and girls, in unexpected places in the world. It’s a lesson for all - in ways no one could have imagined even fifty years ago. No one could have portended the implications of his actions, nor was the computer world ready for his digital destruction. There’s a villain to the story, and a hero. First, we’ll look at the villain. Kevin Mitnick was a 12-year old shy and overweight teenager living in California’s San Fernando Valley. He was a brilliant, but shocking bored adolescent. He figured out how to reverse-engineer the Los Angeles public transportation transfer system so he could ride the buses for free. The next year, in 1981, the 13-year old juvenile prodigy Mitnick used early forms of password Page 62 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Mitnick shared his perspective on the early days of hacking to Kill Screen publication dated August 25, 2011: “The funny thing is, when I started hacking, it was a different era. In 1980 I was a senior in high school, and I tried to get into computer-science class. One of the first assignments was to write a program to find the first 100 Fibonacci numbers. I thought it would be cooler to get people’s passwords, so I wrote a program that simulated the computer system at school — when students would sign into the computer, they would actually be talking to my program, pretending to be the computer.” [1] In short course, his escalating cyber deeds would lead Mitnick to hack into the North American Defense Command (NORAD), a feat that inspired the 1983 American Cold War science fiction film, “War Games.” The three-time nominated Academy Awards film chronicled the nuclear emergency created by character of David Lightman, a young hacker, like Mitnick, who unwittingly accesses a United States military supercomputer programmed to predict possible outcomes of nuclear war. [2] Art does imitate life.

Once is Never Enough Once wasn’t enough for Mitnick, not even a few. Mitnick hacked in to MCI, Digital Equipment Corp, Motorola, Sun Microsystems, Netcom, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Security Pacific, Pierce College, Great American Merchandising, and likely many yet unnamed others. Mitnick became a fugitive on the run as the hacking and communications-related criminal evidence against continued piling up against him. His rap sheet grew. During the two years preceding his arrest, Mitnick spent one year in a low-security prison, and three years of supervised release, but served one year, most of it at a halfway house for people with compulsive disorders. It would be in 1995 that a 25-count indictment against Mitnick would include charges ranging from computer fraud, illegal possession of unauthorized access devices for hacking into personal, corporate, and government computers, possession of unauthorized access devices, and wire fraud. He was finally arrested after a national hacking spree that earned him the merciless spot on the FBI’s most wanted list. It would be until 1999, however, that Mitnick would be sent to prison where he spent 46 months.

and murderers out there who have suffered less than Kevin.” [3] CNN Interactive covered the trials of Kevin Mitnick in March 1999. Reporter John Christensen quoted Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Painter saying, “He's a danger to the community,” said Painter. “We're talking about someone who has consistently and without self-control hacked into systems everywhere. He also was a fugitive and used multiple identities. We think there's a firm basis for holding him, and the courts have agreed.” The deeper and more compelling part of the story is the story behind it - about the innocent man who would unwittingly become the unexpected hunter hacker who finally had the intellectual power to bring down Mitnick. Once thought to be impervious to capture, it would be on Christmas Day, 1994 at 2:09 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) that Mitnick anonymously IP spoofed a computer security researcher working at the University of California at San Diego Supercomputer Center. His name: Tsutomu Shimomura. His email address: tsutomu@ariel.sdsc.edu.

Although Mitnick had become a cult hero to many, especially those wanna-be hackers and cyber trolls, Steve Gold, a news editor of Secure Computing Magazine and a former hacker himself, told The Independent of London on March 18, 1999, “For all that he's done, there are despots

Shimomura, a 30-year-old computational physicist and renown security guru, explained the TCP dump packet logs at a presentation given at the Computer Misuse and Anomaly Detection on January 11, 1995 in Sonoma, California. He was able to show the actual logs, and explained, “...that two different attack mechanisms were used. IP source address spoofing and TCP sequence number prediction were used to gain initial access to a diskless workstation being used mostly as an X terminal. After root access had been obtained, an existing connection to another system was hijacked by means of a loadable kernel STREAMS module.” [4] Two different attack mechanisms were used to gain access to an xterminal workstation: IP source address spoofing and TCP sequence number prediction. Mitnick got root access and hijacked an existing connection. That got him access to the rest of the system. The detail was explained this way: The first IP spoofing probes came from toad.com to determine if the system could be exploited with an IP spoofing attack. Shimomura explained that about six minutes later a flurry of TCP SYNs from 130.92.6.97 to port 513, also a privileged port, filled the connection queue with half-open connections. Then came 20 connection attempts from apollo.it.luc.edu to determine the behavior of x-terminal's TCP sequence number generator. Within 16 seconds the first spoofed packet shut down. What followed, however, was that, “...root access had been gained via IP address spoofing, a kernel STREAMS module named tap-2.01 was compiled and installed on x-terminal...

Page 64 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

and used to take control of an already authenticated login session...” Shimomura mistakenly thought that firewalls were too restrictive so he did not use one. Although he used encryption and a set of log files to track activity on his machines, the technology had become obsolete. Security was breached. Shimomura emailed the logs to a research assistant to check for intrusions, and an automated process mathematically compared all log files with one another. An inconsistency was found and the assistant contacted Shimomura. However, Mitnick deleted the log file to cover his tracks. Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

defeated. Your technique is no good.” The next message, left on January 5, 1995 at 12:28 p.m., was simply eerie music. A third message came on February 4, 1995, after which a Newsweek article mentioned the attack. “Ahh... Tsutomu, my learned disciple. I see you, you put my voice for Newsweek, you put it on Newsweek and you put it on the net. Don't you know that my kung fu is the best? My kung fu is great! Why you put my voice on the net? This is not good! Have I not taught you, grasshopper? You must learn from the master. I know, I know all the techniques and styles. I know tiger claw style. I know trane, I know crane technique. I know, crazy monkey technique. and I also know rdist and send mail. And you put my voice on the net? I'm very disappointed, my son.”

Three days later, on December 27th at 4:33 p.m., Mitnick escalated his behavior by leaving a threatening message on Shimomuraʻs voice mail, mysteriously speaking in a faux-British accent saying, “Damn you. My technique is the best. My boss is the best. Damn you. I know the best technique. I know send mail technique, and my style is much better. Damn you. Don't you know who I am? Me, and my friends, will kill you. (second voice) Hey boss, your kung fu’s really good! (first voice) That's right, my style is the best.” On December 30th at 2:35 p.m., another call came in to Shimomuraʻs voice mail. Mitnick said, “Your security technique will be Page 65 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

Disturbingly, of the six messages Mitnick left, this one on February 15, 1995 was delivered after he was arrested: “Hi, it is I again, Tsutomu, my son. I just want to tell you, very important, very important, all these phone calls you received with uh, making reference to kung fu movies? Nothing to do with any computer thing whatsoever. Just a little, uh, interesting call. I see now that this is getting too big, way too big. I want to tell you, my son, that these have nothing to do with any computer, activities whatsoever. Just, making fun of kung fu movies. That's it, that's it. And making reference to, uh, you know trying to make a reference to, putting kung fu movies into, the, into a computer, reference. That's it. Nothing to do with any, Mitnick, hacking, anything. Nothing. I tell you, it was just an interesting call. That's it. All coincidence. This is getting too big, and nothing wrong Subscription Link ETMMedia.net

has been done by anybody who left any messages on your voice mail. Just to let you know. OK? It's getting way too big.” The last message was on February 15, 1995: “Tsutomu, my friend. I just want to say, want to reiterate, it is big joke. It is big, make fun of kung fu movies. Have nothing to do computer hacking, Mitnick, nothing. You tell me, do not send them, to come and get me. No do not fly out to come and get me. I'm not worth it. Just make fun of kung fu movies. That is it. Thank you.” [5] Mitnick was already the center of attention by the FBI. Since 1992 he had been wanted for a probation violation on a computer theft charge, yet, he continued to copy Shimomuraʻs electronic files.

Communications Inc. to companies that housed thousands of credit card numbers. The potential for theft was enormous as the security of credit card transactions was evaporating. Further, Shimomura knew that material on his system also included computer software controlling cellular phone operations. Shimomura said that material found also included computer software controlling the operations of cellular phones, “One of the reasons I think he broke into my machine is I work with companies that do work for cellular companies,” he said. Shimomura's files also included “some of the tools we have used to track these guys. I believe he was after those tools.” [6]

Shimomuraʻs system contained two Internet service providers, the Sausalito-based WELL and the San Jose- based Netcom Page 66 E The Magazine for Today’s Female Executive

White Fragility - Robin Diangelo The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality. In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people' (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.
