ABOUT THE NAFC:
The National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC) is a network of over 100 Friendship Centres and Provincial/Territorial Associations, which make up part of the Friendship Centre Movement (FCM) – Canada’s most significant national network of self-determined Indigenous-owned and operated civil society community hubs offering programs, services and supports to urban Indigenous people.
ABOUT THE URBAN INDIGENOUS SUMMIT:
The vision of the Urban Indigenous Summit began as an opportunity for the Friendship Centre Movement and our partners to foster relationships, share best practices, and plan action on issues important to Friendship Centres It is also an opportunity to share in strength the ways in which Friendship Centres provide critical support for Indigenous people living in urban, remote and rural communities The Urban Indigenous Summit features presentations as well as workshops, keynote speakers and entertainment by Indigenous performers
SUMMIT HIGHLIGHTS:
In 2023, the Action for the Next Generation: Urban Indigenous Summit exceeded expectations and brought together Friendship Centres (FCs) and Provincial and Territorial Associations (PTAs) from coast-to-coast-to-coast. This 4-day knowledge exchange event consisted of 18 workshops and 5 plenary presentations and panels. As part of the Urban Indigenous Summit, the NAFC held an Advocacy Day which provided an opportunity for FCs and PTAs to speak directly to their federal representatives in the House of Commons and Senate.
The 2025 Urban Indigenous Summit will take place on the traditional and unceded territories of the Algonquin Nation in Ottawa, ON. The gathering will be held at the Westin, and we are expecting over 300 attendees. The theme is “Paths Forward: Strengthening Urban Indigenous Futures”, since a key responsibility within Indigenous cultures is the intergenerational sharing and transfer of knowledge between Youth and Elders
