Introduction

Claudio Macor About twenty-five years ago an acquaintance gave me a copy of Kenneth Anger’s historical book, ‘Hollywood Babylon II’ as a gift. Browsing through outrageous stories of Hollywood stars and scandal, I came across a curiously named chapter ‘The White Legion and the Purple Poodle’. Intrigued I read on, and it was within these few pages that I discovered William ‘Billy’ Haines, and his remarkable love story with Jimmy Shields. The two resonated with me. I knew then that I needed to tell the world about these wonderful characters. I was keen, almost impatient to write, but my research led me nowhere. There was no official account of Billy, only brief mentions in other biographies, and his films were still locked away in the vaults of MGM. I was able to fashion a play with the snippets I had learnt, and my existing knowledge of old Hollywood. After much hard work it was ready to show to the public. I signed up for a number of credit cards and staged the first performance at the Hen and Chicken in Islington to great acclaim. It was 1992 and “The Tailor-Made Man” was born. Following this initial run we transferred to the Battersea Arts Centre, where one night an elderly English actor, by the name of Geoffrey Toone, came to watch. Clearly emotional after what he had seen, he told me that he had been friends with the real Billy and Jimmy, and had lived in their guesthouse for some five years whilst working in Hollywood. He was very complimentary about the show, and even said that ‘Billy and Jimmy were alive on stage’ that night. I was overwhelmed.

William ‘Billy’ Haines

Geoffrey told me stories of the two, things that only great friends would know. I remained in touch with him until he passed away at the age of ninety-four. Thank you Geoffrey, for the stories, friendship, and for Billy and Jimmy. You are greatly missed. Following Ted Turner’s purchase of MGM and the creation of Turner Classic Movies the vaults were opened. Long lost films were seen again. Thames Television restored and screened a Silent film every year at the London Film Festival, complete with a full orchestra. In 1998 ‘Show People’ was screened and it was the first time I saw a magnificent Billy Haines on screen. At last Louis B Mayer’s edict had been lifted. Some years later I was asked ‘why don’t you turn The Tailor-Made Man into a musical?’ What has happened since has been a whirlwind. The combinations of Adam and Duncan’s music, and the lyrics by Adam, have taken my breath away. Amy and I have worked with one another to create a superbly written book, keeping the play but moulding it into a musical. The production and creative team are of the highest order. Now the young, vibrant, brilliant cast are poised to take it to the next level. Old Hollywood has thousands of stories. We all know something of that time and we have an image of how it should be. But this story, this true story, has inspired, motivated, and thrilled everyone who has come across it. This is the story that I needed to tell.

The birth and success of

Louis B. Mayer and MGM Studios Film producer and executive Louis B. Mayer was born to an Eastern European Jewish family in 1884. Ambitious and driven, he was unsatisfied labouring in the family scrap metal business and so in 1918, Mayer moved to Los Angeles to form Louis B. Mayer Pictures Corporation. The producer’s watershed moment would come when Marcus Loew came knocking on his door. Recently having merged his company with Samuel Goldwyn’s studios to give birth to Metro-Goldwyn, Loew found himself without a head executive for the company. Louis B Mayer was enrolled and the three merging companies took on the now globally recognisable name of MGM Studios. With the visionary Louis B. Mayer and production genius of Irving Thalberg at the helm, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was a powerhouse of prolific artistry and film making expertise that the studio famously said attracted “more stars than are in the heavens.”

MGM productions were characterized by elaborate sets, gorgeous costuming and pretty girls. The MGM lot itself was legendary. Over 150 acres and as self-sufficient as a town, complete with its own opium den, barbershop and 24-hour dining establishment. Also housed on the property was none other than the iconic MGM lion, whose digs amounted to an onsite zoo. MGM boasts more than 175 Academy Awards® in its vast library. Among those are 14 Best Pictures. These films include; Rebecca (1940), Hamlet (1948), Marty (1955), The Apartment (1960), West Side Story (1961), Tom Jones (1963), In the Heat of the Night (1967), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Rocky (1976), Annie Hall (1977), Platoon (1986), Rain Man (1988), Dances With Wolves (1990), The Silence of the Lambs (1991). One of Hollywood’s first true moguls, there is no denying his influence on the early years of the film industry’s boom, but as Mayer himself once said, “The sign of a clever auteur is to achieve the illusion that there is a sole individual responsible for magnificent creations that require thousands of people to accomplish.”
